Student Athletes Excel in the Classroom in Fall Semester
by Adam Pitterman
Sports Information Director

Eastern's student athletes showed in the fall 2007 semester that they could not only excel on the field, but in the classroom as well. Many of the Greyhound and Zia teams found themselves ranked at some point either regionally or nationally, while 206 of the 398 student athletes qualified for the athletic honor roll.

To qualify for the ENMU athletic honor roll, a student athlete must finish with a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. While 206 individual athletes qualified, eight teams finished with combined GPA’s over the 3.0 mark.

Teams with a combined 3.0 or better GPA in the fall semester were: baseball, spirit squad, men’s cross country, men’s track and field, softball, volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s soccer and women’s track and field.

You May Be the Main Cause of Co-Workers' Stress
Photos and story by Roma Vivas

Liberate Your Monkeys(right photo, L-R) Kris Kuhlmann receives some "monkeys" at Tuesday's stress reduction workshop. The monkeys symbolize people's worries and burdens.

Eastern New Mexico faculty and staff took an unusual lunch break on Tuesday to stress together.  It was part of a workshop titled “Lunch and Learn” that addressed the causes of work-related stress and how to fight it.

Stress can be defined as the wear and tear our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing environment.  Unlike common belief, stress can actually be positive because it adds anticipation and
excitement to the everyday routine.  An individual’s goal should be not to eliminate stress but to learn how to manage and use it to their advantage.

stress

One of the main causes of stress in the workplace is other people, but, “You can’t control people around you,” said Susan Larsen, director of Counseling and Career Services and workshop director.

One unique concept introduced was the concept of “monkeys,” which, according to Ms. Larsen, is one's worries and burdens.  She recommended that we should not carry other people’s problems or “monkeys.”

“Liberate your monkeys,” a smiling Ms. Larsen said.

According to a handout, relaxation at work is a necessity, not a luxury.  Simple things like avoiding clutter in the work area, accepting things you cannot change, simplifying your life and using soft lighting may help you relax at work.

Cynthia Irwin-Williams Lecture Set for February 7
by Barbara Senn
Special Contributor
cynthia irwin-williams The Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology and Mu Alpha Nu Anthropology Club will host the 9th annual Cynthia Irwin-Williams lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, in Room 112 of the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building.  It is free and open to the public.

The guest speaker is Dr. Douglas Schwartz, President Emeritus and Senior Scholar at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe. He will speak on “Researching at the Edge of Splendor:  Discovering Grand Canyon Prehistory.”
guest speaker

Dr. Schwartz writes about his work:

The prehistory of the Grand Canyon was essentially unknown when I was first introduced to it as a young undergraduate in 1949. Over the next twenty years, beginning with my doctoral research there as a graduate student at Yale, I conducted a number of pioneering archaeological surveys throughout the Canyon.

Building on this work, in the 1960's I directed a series of excavations, the first major work of its kind in the Grand Canyon area. My work in the Canyon combined back-country exploration, river running, archaeological excavating, ecological research, climatology and ethnographic studies and it uncovered an unexpected and fascinating picture of prehistoric life in this unique environment.

For more information, contact Dr. David Batten at 562.2750.

Staff Members Beginning 'Greyhound Amateur Radio Club'
by Erin Griffith
Communication Services

Eastern New Mexico University has started a club that is not only educational and fun, but may also provide public service in times of emergency.  The Greyhound Amateur Radio Club (KE5RUE), which started on Dec. 10, 2007, is still under construction but hoping to become a strong presence on campus and in the community.

Jeff Burmeister, the club’s trustee, has been a driving force behind the creation of the club.  He took the initiative to get the Federal

Communications Commission (FCC) license for the club, and is working on becoming part of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL).

“Most universities around the country have amateur radio clubs from general interest and I was surprised to find we didn’t have one when I came here,” said Mr. Burmeister, who has been part of amateur radio since he was 14.

The club currently has eight members, mostly Eastern staff, but they are hoping that more students and members of the community will join.

Amateur radio uses Ham radios to transmit messages to other Ham radios around the world and even in space. (For more information about Ham radio, go to http://www.hello-radio.org/whatis.html).

“Amateur radio is a community, transmitting to one another through short wave.  I personally have talked with people in Germany, Australia and England. Wherever radio waves transmit, it is possible.  You often talk about local weather conditions, economic conditions, but mostly you talk on a technical level,” Mr. Burmeister said.

The club has space in the old KENW building to set up a “Ham Shack,” but is still working on getting it running.  The club is also trying to establish regular meetings on Saturday mornings.

“Once we start having regular meetings we can establish the Ham station. We are accepting equipment donations and have received some donations already.  We hope once people get a taste of the hobby they will get more involved and buy their own gear, but we want to provide an opportunity for everyone to try it,” Mr. Burmeister said.

Along with letting people try out Ham radio, one of the club’s other goals is to assist people in acquiring their amateur radio licenses, and, according to the club website, http://wwwstd.enmu.edu/enmuarc/, the club plans to schedule regular amateur radio license exam sessions at ENMU.

One of the most beneficial parts of the club to the community is the part amateur radio can play in emergencies.  For instance, hurricanes Rita and Katrina ravished the communication systems and amateur radio volunteers supplied most of the communication during the crisis because many of them own equipment.

“Amateur radio is a good alternative support system to the local TV station.  It is a good resource to provide communication to the Eastern side of the state about public safely and service information,” Mr. Burmeister said.

Amateur radio has been used during crises in this area as well.  Mr. Burmeister said when the tornado hit Clovis, the state emergency operations center could not get through on the phone lines to find out whether help was needed, so local amateur radio operators were used for communication.

“It is a fun hobby experiment in technology and is also a very valuable public service.  We want to provide an outlet for people to have fun with amateur radio and to use new technology,” Mr. Burmeister said.

For more information, call Mr. Burmeister or Rick Taylor at 562.2112.

Updated: Help Needed for Smithsonian Exhibit – A Smithsonian Exhibit "Key Ingredients: America by Food" will occur in the Golden Librrary and Pecos Room Feb. 23 through April 4. To supplement and enrich this event, a wide variety of local programs, activities, lectures, displays are being planned; however, help is needed.

A huge thank you to many who have already been helping and have promised to help with the local programming for this Smithsonian Event.

However, Merlene Olmsted still needs help and am hoping you will rise to the challenge. Where she has the greatest need for help is that of docents (guides) to be available to guide and explain to Exhibit goers what they can expect as they travel through the main Exhibit, “Key Ingredients: America by Food.” She will provide a pamphlet that explains each portion of the Exhibit, and she will also have a one-hour training (for those who wish) on Feb. 19 beginning at 2 p.m.

Organizers are hoping faculty and staff will be able to help in a variety of ways. To see how you can help

General Comments, Compliments, Apologies and Reviews

(Apology)

"I apologize to everyone I've offended so far in the first four weeks of 2008." Please be patient; my New Year's resolution hasn't yet taken root.." – Wendel Sloan

(Review)

"I ate at four restaurants in Lubbock this weekend. There is a new deli on 19th St. just past University called McAlister's Deli that is very good. The vegeterian chili is awesome. The only drawback was having to put up with a bunch of cocky, Daddy's-rich Texas Tech kids there for some free food promotion. There is also a new steakhouse on Slide called Lisa West's Double Nickle, mentioned in Texas Monthly, that has great food with an upscale atmosphere. It's a bit pricey, but you can get a New York Strip for two for about $40. I'm not much of a drinker, but for the rest of you, they have an extensive wine list, with bottles running up to $325. The other restaurants were Cotton Patch on Slide, and Orlando's (Italian) on Indiana. At Orlando's, I indugled in a slice of birthday Kentucky Pie with ice cream that was so scrumptious it will require at least five days of basketball to work off." – Wendel Sloan

Help the Hartley House with their Silent Auction!

The Hartley House Extravaganza is scheduled for Feb. 23 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Clovis Civic Center.  Each year, the Hartley House has two fund-raisers.  The summer fund-raiser is more for community awareness than it is to raise money, but the Extravaganza is what sustains the Domestic Violence Shelter with funds for items that build up during the year.  The Shelter has been very busy this year and at one time during the fall season, the shelter had several women with a total of 22 children!

The Silent Auction is the biggest part of the Extravaganza event.  Organizers are looking for new items - art pieces, new quilts, or gift certificates to area business - anything fun that would interest anyone to start a bidding war.  Organizers do at least 5-6 items in a live auction.  Last year, Hamilton Ford donated a cute, used convertible that really brought in some competitive high bids.  They’ve also auctioned off trips.  The live auction is where quilts that local women have made and donated are auctioned off

If you have items you’d like to donate for the silent auction or live auction, please contact board member Terri Marney at tmarney@phs.org.
