Eastern Offers Basic American Sign Language Course
by Marc Schoder
Communication Services

Eastern New Mexico University will once again offer CDIS 293 Intro to American Sign Language, according to instructor Dwayne Wilkerson.

“(CDIS 293) was taught at Eastern several years ago,” said Wilkerson. He added that the department felt it necessary to bring the course back now because of considerable interest.

The speech and language pathologist, with 25 years of experience, said that his background in sign came from an interest in working with deaf children.

“I have my master's in speech pathology and my associate's in sign interpreting,” he said.

He notes that this class is meant for those who are going into a career as a speech pathologist.

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, American Sign Language is a complete, complex language that employs signs made with the hands and other movements, including facial expressions and postures of the body. It is the first language of many deaf North Americans, and one of several communication options available to deaf people. ASL is said to be the fourth most commonly used language in the United States.

For more information on the course, contact Dwayne Wilkerson at 575.693.8865 or at dwilkerson@portaleschools.com.

General Comments, Compliments and Apologies

Dear Cast and Crew of 'And the Winner Is...',

I hope you all know how much I appreciated you considerable efforts in making "And the Winner Is..." happen. Additionally, I believe that our efforts may have played a role in the recent decision by the Portales City Council to expand the Yam Theatre project. In late-December, the City Council voted to expand the Yam renovation project from a 120-seat theatre to a 350-seat theatre/special events complex."

Dr. Vartabedian,

I am sure that I speak for everyone when I say that it was an honor to be associated with such a great cause. Thank you for having the vision to see the possibility of putting on the play. I’m sure you will bring that same idea of a university-wide production to your new school; they will probably be better actors, but I know they won’t have any more fun doing a play than we did!
