Spring Cleaning for DeBaca Hall Set for April 21-26

Hello, DeBaca Hall Room-Holders:

Here’s a friendly reminder that it’s time to check out your “storage area” in DeBaca Hall.   Anything to toss?  Anything you need to shred? Anything you need to consolidate?

Timeframe: The week of April 21-26 (Monday-Saturday) is set for “clean up” of DeBaca storage areas and rooms.  This clean up focuses on the rooms assigned to departments, student organizations, and other offices (see list below).  If it’s more convenient for you to start your clean up earlier, that’s fine!

Helpful hints:  Dumpsters and recycling bins will be placed in DeBaca and emptied the evenings of that week (only).  A dumpster outside the building for larger items will also be provided.

Final check:  Monday, April 28 Core Staff members will walk through DeBaca to check rooms. If rooms do not meet a reasonable code of fire safety, neatness, and “need,” the rooms may be consolidated, reclaimed, or whatever is needed.

If you have any questions, heartburn, anxiety, or good ideas to help with DeBaca clean-up, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  Thanks.

“Food Poisoning”: Regional Juried Student Show Through April 4

The Department of Art is presenting “Food Poisoning,” an art exhibit sponsored by Family and Consumer Sciences and the Golden Library. The exhibit is available for viewing in The Runnels Gallery during library hours through April 4.

The Runnels Gallery is located in the Golden Library on the ENMU campus in Portales. Gallery hours are Sunday, noon-8 p.m., Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m..
Admission is free.

"Food Poisoning" is a dynamic look into the edible world. This exhibition explores our vastly diverse relationships with food. Pieces demonstrate how consumables influence the world in different ways, posing both personal and social questions.  Students show their various perspectives relating to the theme of food through sculpture, photography, painting, digital images, and drawings.

At the reception, experience edible art, and the visual excitement that occurs in delicious paintings.  Awards will be announced, and viewers will have the opportunity to speak with artists featured in the show.

The show, which is a part of the upcoming Smithsonian food exhibit, received entries from 24 artists competing for their spot in the exhibit. Christopher Calderon, ENMU Gallery Manager, says the show is a “creative tie into Key Ingredients and the hope was that it would bring about a more creative response to the traditional still-life.”  Key Ingredients is a Smithsonian food exhibit coming to ENMU.

Special thanks go out to juror Caroline Brooks, Assistant Director of the Roswell Museum and Art Center.  For further information, call 562.2624 or e-mail albert.calderon@enmu.edu.

Former Williamson Chair Offers Prequel to April 11 Williamson Lectureship – The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is sponsoring a presentation by Dr. Alberto Rojo, recent Jack Williamson Endowed Chair, immediately preceding the Jack Williamson Lectureship on Friday, April 11. The associate professor of physics at Oakland University will speak on teleportation in “Jumper,” the book and movie, at 10 a.m. in the Sandia Room of the CUB.

Dr. Rojo will discuss the scientific concepts behind the recent film that was based on the novel by author Steven Gould, this year’s Lectureship Guest of Honor. In the soon-to-be-released article on teleportation, Dr. Rojo focuses on the scientific concepts behind the premise of the film: among them, quantum mechanics, entanglement, elementary particles, and the conversion of matter into energy.  As Dr. Rojo observes, because of the incredibly small scales of quantum teleportation experiments conducted since 1997, “With teleportation the situation is different: it is an improbability rather than an impossibility, insinuating a communicating pathway below the divide that separates science and fiction.”

In addition to being a segue to author Steven Gould’s  presentations throughout the day, Dr. Rojo's talk is a timely opportunity to link popular culture to current scientific topics.  It gives participants the chance to explore both literature and science, as Gould’s protagonist does in his novel.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Dear Drs. Varela, Lutnesky, Ayala, and Wright,

I want you to be among the first to know that Megan (Brown) has been accepted by UNM medical school!  I believe my daughter will not mind my "scooping" her on this, and no doubt you will be hearing the news directly from her when she makes her next trip into Loja.   Thank you for all that you have done to make this possible!

I am under the impression the mudslides in Ecuador are abating a bit.  Megan's latest phone call, about a week ago, gave us some peace of mind that she is doing better after being landlocked and without food.  (A nurse shared some fruit and vegetables, and that's how Megan made it through yet another crisis.)   Provisions are available again, Megan and all the other villagers should be fine now.

My very best wishes to you all.

Cathrynn Novich Brown

Note from ENMU Graduate:

Teaching 8th grade science in New Mexico is tough. Finding funding to bring new and exciting things to my students is even more tough. I teach students not only subject matter, but how to learn. This requires much diversity in how I approach things.

I need your help to expand this diversity. The link below is the proposal I have on donorschoose.org [http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?action=view&id=167369]. The website is a place where you can find projects in classrooms that you think are worthwhile. You can donate as little or as much as you like. You can choose my project, or even others. I simply ask that you do choose.

I also ask that you share this e-mail with your friends, co-workers, and family and let them know that they can directly help a classroom teacher in need.

My thanks to you.-

This and all other proposals at DonorsChoose.org have been submitted by public school teachers who seek resources that will help their students learn.  The New York Times has profiled DonorsChoose.org as "the future of philanthropy."  Please help students in need by clicking on the link above!

Contributions are tax-deductible, and the donors receive photographs, student thank-you notes, and a teacher letter for the project they choose to sponsor.
