Nursing Receives $691,000 Grant: ENMU Scores Highest

The New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) recently awarded a $691,000 grant to the nursing program at Eastern New Mexico University.

Dr. Leslie Paternoster, director of the nursing program who applied for the grant, along with ENMU grants director Jo Laney, was pleased. She said Eastern scored highest and was given more than the other 16 schools who applied.

The NMHED specified that the grant money should be used to increase retention, to recruit, to bring in new faculty, and increase more nurses with their bachelor’s of science in nursing or BSNs in New Mexico.

Eastern’s program, which is designed to take registered nurses (RNs) and help them get their bachelor’s degree, has had a 224 percent increase in enrollment since fall of last year. The program is now completely online.

“We’re the little jewel in the eastern part of the state and the word is spreading throughout New Mexico,” Dr. Paternoster said.

According to Dr. Paternoster, ENMU grads are serving as nurses in 42 communities – 22 of them in New Mexico.

Along with scholarships for students, the money will be used to hire another full-time faculty, help to pay the recruitment specialist and to hire a retention specialist.

The department hopes to, in the next 3-5 years, offer a master’s program and develop a nurse practitioners program.

A study conducted by the University of New Mexico says that New Mexico is expected to have a 52 percent nursing shortage by 2020.

Professors Receive Grant for Need-based Scholarships

Dr. Tom Brown, chair of mathematical sciences, and Dr. Mohamad Ahmadian, professor of computer science

Dr. Mohamad Ahmadian, professor of computer science, and Dr. Tom Brown, chair of mathematical sciences, at Eastern New Mexico University recently received a $575,552 grant from the National Science Foundation to use for need-based scholarships.

The professors spent approximately four months putting together the proposal for the S-STEM grant that will give scholarships to students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dr. Brown said that the timing for the grant is particularly good because the CSEMS Scholarship (Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship) expired in 2007.

The creators of the grant hope that it will support the bridge program between the community colleges in the region and Eastern.  Students attending Clovis Community College, the New Mexico Junior College and ENMU-Roswell will be able to receive this scholarship, and could continue receiving it if they choose to finish their degrees at ENMU.

An advisory committee made up by the different departments will choose the recipients, however, they are not sure yet how many students the grant will help. The grant will go into effect September 2009, and must be spent within the next four years.

“We are looking forward to working with our colleagues in the physical sciences, biology and math to make the grant program a success,” Dr. Ahmadian said.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation in Washington D.C.
Story and photos by Erin Griffith

This summer I was the press intern for Senator Jeff Bingaman in Washington D.C. for five weeks.  I had never been to D.C. before, but after going, I cannot wait to go back.

I have always been interested in politics, and am majoring in political science.  However, being in the heart of our country’s political world made me care about my country and how it operates even more.

erin griffith
My favorite memory is probably the first vote I watched on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Sitting in the gallery and seeing all of the senators, including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Pete Domenici, John Kerry and every other senator (except for Ted Kennedy, Jeff Sessions and John McCain), come in and cast their decision is so much more fun and meaningful than watching the vote on CSPAN.

My favorite thing about living in D.C. was the public transportation.  Being able to hop on the metro and go almost anywhere you want to without driving is great.  I also loved the museums.  I did most of the Smithsonians as well as the recently opened National Museum of Crime & Punishment and Newseum.

I learned a great deal in my time there as an intern about how policies are made and how much influence people have with their congressmen. I also never had to get anyone his or her coffee. The program that Jeff and his staff have in place is exceptional.
d.c.
Every person should spend time in our nation’s capital, to appreciate its history and realize the importance of the decisions made there for the future.
