Professor Uses Middle Initial to Avoid Confusion with 'Adult Star'
by Erin Griffith
Communication Services

Dr. Julie C. Abril, new assistant professor of criminal justice and sociology at Eastern New Mexico University, always uses her middle initial.

“I Googled my name once and found out there is someone on the Internet who is a porn star that has my name, so now I always use my middle initial,” she said.

Dr. Abril, who loves to write and is working on publishing her new book, Survival and Resilience of the Cultural and Spiritual Identity of a Modern Native American Indian Tribal Nation, did not always have the luxury of reading and writing.

“When I was 16 I left home; it was a bad environment. I didn’t know how to read or write; I was fundamentally illiterate,” said Dr. Abril, who was in special education classes through most of school. “I taught myself to read and took the GED when I was 17.  Weeping in the Playtime of Others was the first book I ever read through and through.  I could relate to it.”

She moved to San Francisco and took classes from six community colleges, and eventually got her Ph.D. from the University of California at Irvine.

One thing Dr. Abril finds ironic is that she initially wanted to join the Air Force, but they would not accept her without a high school diploma, and later on, when she tried again, they would not accept her because she had a Ph.D.

As a criminology and legal scholar and teacher, Dr. Abril knows well how the criminal justice system works, and even worked with the Emeryville Police in California as a dispatcher for two-and-half years. She also does consulting for the Department of Justice on matters involving Indians.

For the last year-and-a-half, Dr. Abril decided to take a hiatus from teaching (she had been teaching at Fresno State in California) and moved to Las Cruces to do some writing.

“In Texas while I was visiting a friend, I had an occasion to go to Las Cruces and I thought, ‘Wow, this is nice’.  It was a comfortable place I could write so I stayed,” said the Yaqui Indian.

Dr. Abril decided that she wanted to stay in the area, and thought she could be as productive in Portales as she had been in Las Cruces. She primarily researches crimes on Indian reservations and the Southern Ute Tribe is nearby.

“I love this university.  It is a cute little campus and I can walk everywhere.  It’s safer here. My last school had robberies and shootings across campus and was gang- infested.  I never felt safe,” Dr. Abril said. “After I met the faculty in my department, I didn’t care that Portales wasn’t desert like Las Cruces; they are really good people to hang out with,” she said.

Hispanic Heritage Month Continues – ENMU will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month through Oct. 15.

The first formal recognition of Hispanic Heritage was made by Congress in 1968. Originally designated as the week of Sept. 15, the celebration was centered around the Independence Days of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, which are celebrated on Sept. 15, and Mexico, which is celebrated on Sept. 16.

In 1988, the celebration was extended to 31 days, beginning on Sept. 15 and ending on Oct. 15. It now includes Chile’s Independence Day (Sept. 18) and el Dia de la Raza, or the Hispanic celebration of Columbus Day (Oct. 12).

Cynthia Irwin-Williams Lecture Set for October 2 – The Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology and Mu Alpha Nu, the anthropology club at Eastern New Mexico University, will present the Tenth Annual Cynthia Irwin-Williams Lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, in Room 112 of the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building.

The speaker is Dr. Stanley Rhine, emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico, Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology, and retired forensic anthropologist for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.

He will speak on “The Real CSI: Forensic Anthropology and the Investigation of Death.”

The lecture is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact David Batten at 562.2750.

The lecture series honors the late Dr. Cynthia Irwin-Williams, prominent archaeologist and former ENMU professor.

Dr. Irwin-Williams was born and grew up in Denver, Colo. As early as the age of 12 she developed a passion for archaeology when she got a job with her brother working part-time in the archaeology department in the Denver Museum of Natural History.

When Dr. Irwin-Williams decided to attend college, it was during a time when it was not seen as necessary or appropriate for women to attend school; society felt they were more suited to take care of the home. She did not agree with these views, and attended Radcliff College where she received bachelor's and master's degrees in archaeology. She then went to Harvard and received a Ph.D.

In 1964, after a variety of academic jobs, Dr. Irwin-Williams came to teach at Eastern New Mexico University where she was awarded the Llano Estacada Center for Advanced Professional Studies and Distinguished Research Professorship.

In 1977 Dr. Irwin-Williams became the second woman president for the Society for American Archaeology. She then became executive director of the Social Science Center in Reno, Nev., and then Research Professor for the Quaternary Science Center.

Dr. Irwin-Williams paved the way for many women, especially those in archaeology. That is why ENMU decided to name their annual lectureship after her.
