Professional Development Schools Network Conference Meets in Taos
by Dr. Kathleen Pittman
College of Education and Technology

The New Mexico Professional Development Schools Network Conference met in Taos on Sept. 26-27.

Sponsored by the New Mexico Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the New Mexico Center for Teaching Excellence and ENMU, the Network was founded to revitalize and enhance teacher preparation programs across New Mexico.   Highlights of the conference were keynote speeches by Dr. Richard Howell, Interim Dean of the College of Education at UNM and our own dean, Dr. Jerry Harmon.  Using a workshop format, participants closely examined the Nine Essentials of PDS Work (National PDS Conference) as ways to build healthy Professional Development Schools throughout New Mexico.

ENMU has provided the leadership to establish and support the Professional Development Schools movement in our state. The participants at the conference represented every teacher preparation program in New Mexico.  A founding board was formed to organize the network into a statewide organization.

Attending the conference from ENMU were:  Dr. Mary Arth, Stephanie Foster (Monterrey Elementary PDS), Dr. Gail Gruber, Dr. Jerry Harmon, Dr. Amy Hazelrigg, Dr. Mary Kallus, Christy Moorhead (Monterrey Elementary PDS), Sherie Montoya, Dr. Kathleen Pittman, Caron Powers (James Elementary PDS), and Dr. Cheri Quinn.

ENMU students attending were:  Lorenza Alonso, Kirk De Soto, Sean Fletcher, Jamie Furney, Katie Hatch, Brian Hurst, Amy Newton, and Heather O’Bryant.

Dr. Pittman heads the organization and presided at the meeting.  Dr. Arth and Ms. Powers made a presentation about Math Mates, one of the activities ENMU students carry out at James Elementary. Drs. Hazelrigg, Kallus, Gruber, Mrs. Montoya and Ms. Moorhead facilitated small groups.  Mrs. Foster, Ms. Moorhead and Drs. Pittman and Gruber made a presentation about how the PDS at Monterrey works.

The students presented “The PDS from the Teacher Candidates’ Perspective”.  Our students “stole the show.”  Articulate and informative, the student presentation helped all conference attendees understand at a deeper level what teacher candidates seek and value concerning teacher preparation programs.

Emergency Test Set for September 30 – A test of the ENMU Emergency Communications System will take place between 3-3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

Members of the campus community will receive an e-mail message of this test.  An announcement of the test will also be posted on the Web. For those faculty, staff, and students who have signed up for SS Alert text messaging, a text message will be sent.  Faculty are asked to please consider allowing students to leave their phones on during this time for purposes of verifying this alert.

The purpose of this test is to evaluate how quickly the ENMU Emergency Communications System delivers an alert.  Building safety representatives are asked to confirm by e-mail to Betsy Chavez the time they received the e-mail, text message, or any other message indicating a test is underway.

Faculty, staff, and students who have Sprint cell phone service are asked to notify betsy.chavez@enmu.edu about the time that their alert message arrived.

We apologize for this interruption to the instructional and work day; however, our ability to reach members of the campus community through multiple communication systems is exactly what must be tested.  A reminder e-mail message will be sent early Tuesday morning, Sept. 30, about this test.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

‘Real CSI’ Speaker at ENMU on October 2 – The Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology and Mu Alpha Nu, the anthropology club at Eastern New Mexico University, will present the Tenth Annual Cynthia Irwin-Williams Lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, in Room 112 of the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building.

The speaker is Dr. Stanley Rhine, emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico, Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology, and retired forensic anthropologist for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.

He will speak on “The Real CSI: Forensic Anthropology and the Investigation of Death.”

The lecture is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact David Batten at 562.2750.

The lecture series honors the late Dr. Cynthia Irwin-Williams, prominent archaeologist and former ENMU professor.

Dr. Irwin-Williams was born and grew up in Denver, Colo. As early as the age of 12 she developed a passion for archaeology when she got a job with her brother working part-time in the archaeology department in the Denver Museum of Natural History.

When Dr. Irwin-Williams decided to attend college, it was during a time when it was not seen as necessary or appropriate for women to attend school; society felt they were more suited to take care of the home. She did not agree with these views, and attended Radcliff College where she received bachelor's and master's degrees in archaeology. She then went to Harvard and received a Ph.D.

In 1964, after a variety of academic jobs, Dr. Irwin-Williams came to teach at Eastern New Mexico University where she was awarded the Llano Estacada Center for Advanced Professional Studies and Distinguished Research Professorship.

In 1977 Dr. Irwin-Williams became the second woman president for the Society for American Archaeology. She then became executive director of the Social Science Center in Reno, Nev., and then Research Professor for the Quaternary Science Center.

Dr. Irwin-Williams paved the way for many women, especially those in archaeology. That is why ENMU decided to name their annual lectureship after her.

I am: 10 years old
I am in: 3rd grade

John is a very shy and quiet boy.  He receives specialized educational help in school and has worked hard to participate and do well in school.  He is very determined to learn and tries hard in school to meet his educational goals.  John is a very sensitive boy but he does enjoy joking around a lot.  He is somewhat shy and is generally anxious around new people.  As for friends, John very much values his friends and their friendships.  He continues to learn how to socialize with other children in a positive way and has made many strong bonds between his friends due to those efforts.  Over all he does well with younger children and adults and tends to interact with them via jokes or playing the big brother role with the children.  John very much wants to do his best and wants to be the “good boy.”  He enjoys helping out around the house and outside and tends to stay around his foster parents at all times.  He enjoys eating burgers, pizza, hot dogs, and Mexican food in general.  John would do well as an only child due to his need for a lot of attention.  John does have a neurological disability, which could require some form of care for him for the rest of his life.  Having a family for John that is very committed to him, willing to love him, support him, and give him the attention he needs will be the winning combination as a forever family.
