Human Rights Film Series Presents THE TAKE on April 14Tuesday, April 14, 7:30 p.m. Room 120, College of Education.

A film highly relevant to the current state of economic crises in the US.  In the wake of Argentina's spectacular economic collapse, Latin America's most prosperous middle class finds itself in a ghost town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. Thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory in Buenos Aires, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to leave. All they want is to re-start the silent machines. But this simple act has the power to turn the globalization debate on its head.

Filmmakers Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein take viewers inside the lives of the workers and their families, who must fight for jobs and their dignity by confronting factory owners, politicians and judges. The result is a real-life political thriller that pits ordinary workers against the local ruling elite and the powerful forces of global capitalism.

ENMU Students Conducting Fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities

This fundraiser is being hosted by Dr. LaChrystal Ricke’s COMM 202 class.  There are 17 students in the class; part of the semester involves a community service project.

The Casino Night, to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities, is set for April 24 at Greyhound Arena.  The event starts at 6 p.m.  The purpose of the Casino Night is to generate funds for the charity.  Also, the group is collecting pop tabs (off the top of pop cans).  Coke donates money per pound of tabs collected to benefit RMDH.

Along with the Casino Night and pop tabs, the class is actively looking for household type items that the house is desperately in need of at this time.  Here’s the house’s “wish list” – also, any toys, games, videos (entertainment type items) are being collected as well – these can be new or gently used. Terryl Bell, compete in the Environmental Science category, worked with Dr. Newt Hilliard investigating the microbial flora of sulfur springs in the Carlsbad area. The following is an update from him:

"Thought you might like to know that the switch to Environmental Science did prove to be a good decision. 1st Place, several water awards, and a small trip to Anchorage, Alaska in June to compete for a position to represent the United States in Stockholm, Sweden. The judges had excellent suggestions as well as pointed out some areas that I need to work on to better communicate the project. Congratulations Dr. Hilliard, we did it again. – Terryl Bell

All students advancing to the International Fair from the Southeast Region are from Carlsbad High School.

As a general note, I would like to thank all the people from ENMU who worked so hard to ensure that our Regional Fair was such a success. Thank You – Dr. Ken Cradock

General Comments and Compliments

Congratulations on the ENMU website.  Not only is the content easy to find and helpful, the design and presentation are fantastic!  I enjoyed my three years at ENMU and will always consider the campus, community and people important in my life.  I appreciated the opportunity to serve as director of athletics from 1993-96 under Dr. Frost and would welcome the opportunity to return to the campus that provides quality education by dedicated faculty and staff.

Keep up the good work.
