New Basketball Coach to be Introduced on Tuesday

President Gamble has announced the selection of Andrew Helton [photo] as the new Greyhound men’s basketball coach. With his selection, he becomes the 11th coach in the 73-year history of the program.

Mr. Helton will be introduced at a press conference at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, in Greyhound Arena. It is open to everyone.

“Eastern is fortunate to employ a coach the caliber of Andrew Helton,” said Dr. Gamble.  “In addition to a very strong basketball background, he had enthusiastic references.  He emerged as our top choice from a strong pool of candidates, and I am certain he will be successful.”

For the past two seasons, Mr. Helton has served under University of South Alabama head coach Ronnie Arrow. In their first season with the Jaguars, the team posted a school record 26 victories and won the Sun Belt Conference Eastern Division title and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. One year before going to USA, Mr. Helton and Mr. Arrow collaborated to guide the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men’s basketball team to the Southland Conference title, before falling in a tightly contested game to second-seeded University of Wisconsin after holding a 29-17 halftime lead over the Badgers.

At TAMU-Corpus Christi, he was in charge of recruiting, scouting, academic services and tutoring the post players. The Islanders achieved a record of 107-64 during Mr. Helton’s six seasons, which included four as the associate head coach. The program’s SLC tournament championship came during the team’s first season in the conference. Other landmark wins came against Florida State, Baylor, Texas A&M and South Florida.

Prior to his stints at USA and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Mr. Helton has served at University of Miami, St. Francis (Pa.) and Pittsburgh-Johnstown. He earned a master’s degree in sports administration in 2001 at Miami of Ohio, after earning his bachelor’s degree in 1992 at the institution in secondary math education.

Mr. Helton, a native of Marion, Ohio, near Columbus, joins a strong Greyhound basketball tradition, which includes back-to-back Lone Star Conference South Division titles in the 2002 and 2003 seasons, a LSC Tournament crown following the 1992 season and a NAIA National Championship following a 23-7 season after the 1968-69 season.

Greyhound Baseball Makes LSC Post-Season Tournament – After winning three out of four games again West Texas A&M University this weekend, the Greyhound baseball team has made the Lone Star Conference Post-Season Tournament for the first time since 1994. The fifth-seeded Greyhounds (28-26 overall and 23-21 in the LSC) will play at 2 p.m. (MT) on Saturday against second-seeded Angelo State University at the six-team tournament hosted by Abilene Christian University. Doc Elder will broadcast the game on one of the Rooney-Moon Stations.

Students Will Produce Next Week's Monday Memo – Communication Services students Robin Haislett, Erin Griffith, Roma Vivas and Crystal Parra will be responsible for the traditional end-of-semester, student-produced Monday Memo next week. Items sent to Wendel's personal inbox will not get in, so please send items directly to monday.memo@enmu.edu, or use Web submission forms on the side bar of the Monday Memo. Thank you.

ADJOURNMENT

Human Rights Film Series Presents Ace in the Hole on Tuesday – HUMAN RIGHTS FILM SERIES presents: ACE IN THE HOLE on Tuesday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m., Room 128, College of Education

One of the most scathing indictments of American culture ever produced by a Hollywood filmmaker, Academy Award-winner Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole is legendary for both its cutting social critique and its status as a hard-to-find cult classic. Kirk Douglas gives the fiercest performance of his career as Chuck Tatum, an amoral newspaper reporter caught in dead-end Albuquerque, NM who happens upon the story of a lifetime-and will do anything to ensure he gets the scoop. Wilder's follow-up to Sunset Boulevard is an even darker and more penetrating vision, a no-holds-barred expose that anticipated the rise of the American media circus and the society of the spectacle.  The opportunities for displaying greed and venality are fully drawn out by Wilder; indeed, the film looks unbelievably prescient from a modern perspective of media overload and human exploitation in the pursuit of money, power and markets.

The film is roughly 1 hr and 45 min.

Graduating Students Present Art Exhibit Through April 30 Three graduating art students, Heather Hancock, Kyra Ann Burch and Melissa Cavaliere, will present an exhibit titled State of Felicity from April 27-30 in Runnels Gallery in Golden Library.

A closing reception with the artists will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday April 30.

"Encompassing the disciplines of painting, sculpture, and photography, Heather Hancock, Kyra Ann Burch, and Melissa Cavaliere pull you into their euphoric worlds," says Albert Calderon, Runnels Gallery manager.

Heather Hancock grew up in Portales. Prior to attending ENMU, she received an associates degree in art from Clovis Community College. "Heather's work beckons for the inner child in all to be awakened. To evoke a state of nostalgia in her viewers, she employs saturated colors and eclectic mix of toys and objects in her artwork," says Calderon.

Kyra Ann Burch unearthed her love for photography while growing up in Rio Rancho. "Her goal is to create a photographic narrative by capturing images which are often overlooked," according to Calderon.

Melissa Cavaliere grew up in the Texas countryside. "The organic characters and tones of her paintings reflect the simplicity of nature; striving to find a balance between industrialization and the unrefined flow of the natural world," says Calderon.

Runnels Gallery is open during normal library hours.

For more information, call 562.2607.

Update from the New Mexico Higher Education Department – [update]

The City of Portales is working on a variety of activities to celebrate its incorporation centennial this year. One of the planned activities is to host a City Flag Design Contest with the goal of creating and flying the first Portales City Flag during June 2009.

Preserving the culture and heritage of the City of Portales is an important mission in maintaining the legacy of the Portales community. The City of Portales is reaching out to all community citizens with the goal of creating a City of Portales flag design. The design should embody the specific attributes of the Portales community. Ideally, the artwork should represent the culture, history and fabric of the community as well as its bright future. The winner(s) will be given full recognition of their artwork on the City of Portales website, in a press release, and during the Portales City Council meeting on May 19, 2009 and during the flag raising on June 16, 2009.

Each artist or groups are allowed to submit (1) entry no later than Friday, May 1, 2009 at:
City of Portales
ATTN: Nicole Wilkening, Community Affairs Coordinator
100 West 1st Street
Portales, NM 88130

Entries will be judged on appropriateness of design, narrative, and artistic quality. For the submission requirements, please visit www.portalesnm.org or the Portales City Hall at 100 West 1st Street, Portales, 356.6662 ext. 24.

If you would like more information about this topic, or you would like to schedule an interview with Orlando Ortega, Jr., please call Nicole Wilkening at 575.356.6662 ext. 24 or e-mail Nicole at nwilkening@portalesnm.org.
