In Memoriam

Former Eastern employee Virginia Pettigrew passed away on Aug. 18.  Services were held on Aug. 21 at the Broadview Church of Christ in Broadview, N.M.

Professor Emeritus of English Dr. Paul Coggins passed away Sunday, Aug. 16.  Dr. Coggins retired in 1989 after a long career at Eastern teaching grammar and Victorian literature.

Gail D. Hinderliter

Bachelor of Social Work grad Gail D. Hinderliter, diagnosed with brain cancer on the Monday before graduation, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 20. She is pictured with her mother as she received her diploma at ENMU's May commencement.

Gail Dee Hinderliter born July 23, 1955, age 54, of Clovis, N.M. died Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.

Memorial Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, at The Chapel, Muffley Funeral Home, 1430 Thornton in Clovis. Sam Bruce will officiate.

Gail was born July 23, 1955, to Verle D. and Jackie R. (Mathis) Hinderliter in Waynoka, Okla. She graduated from ENMU with a Bachelor of Science and Social Work Degree and worked as a real estate agent and social worker until her illness prevented further work.

Survivors include her son, Ditto (Kris) Worley of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Dixie (Justin) Crompton of Clovis and Beau Worley of Albuquerque; her mother, Jackie Hinderliter of Clovis; one brother, Rodney Hinderliter of Dover, Tenn; one sister, Ginger Boone of Portales; and one granddaughter, Lynden Jean Worley. She was preceded in death by her father, Verle D. Hinderliter.

Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home, Inc. 575.762.4435 www.muffleyfuneralhome.com. – from the Clovis News-Journal.

Memories from her friend, William Martin:

Gail was a graduate of Clovis High School, and attended ENMU. She started right after high school but left after a couple of years. I think at one time she was a cheerleader or in the band as a performer at ENMU in her early days.  She once told me a wonderful story about being a host to Wolfman Jack back when he came to ENMU years ago.  She road in a limo, picked him up at the airport and escorted him around.

She came back a couple of years ago 2006 (I think) and entered the Social Work program, graduating in May. She found out about the cancer back in March or April of this year, but was very determined to finish and graduate.  Personally, I can tell you that she was a very important person to the local 12 step program community, and was very committed to helping others find sobriety. She was one of the most caring and loving people I have ever known.

Arnaldo, 15, is best described as witty, creative and determined!  Currently, he is in Karate classes and has steadily advanced- something he is very proud of.  Arnaldo really looks up to older boys, so a family with either no children, or older boys would be most appropriate.  Due to his history of abuse, neglect and abandonment, Arnaldo struggles to trust adults and at times can be obstinate and defiant.  However, with consistent encouragement, guidance and support, he can be easily engaged, especially in physical and outdoor activities such as fishing, dirt bike riding, and camping.  A typical teen, Arnaldo is struggling to find his place in the world, and at present is unsure of what his future will look like and what he might like to become.  Arnaldo likes to cook (he recently attended a cooking workshop which he enjoyed immensely) and with encouragement and support might make an excellent chef.  He enjoys hip-hop music, playing video games and activities (such as Karate) which can provide him with a sense of accomplishment.  He is currently in Treatment Foster Care, and a transition into an adoptive home will need to be slow and gradual.  Ongoing therapy will also be necessary until he can feel safe and secure.  No out of State families will be considered for Arnaldo.  Fully licensed and approved NM families interested in this young man are encouraged to contact: Scott Temple, Adoptions Consultant/Placement Specialist 505-476-5403 or scott.temple@state.nm.us
