ENMU Hires College of Fine Arts Dean
Story by Robin Haislett
Communication Services

Eastern New Mexico University has chosen Joseph Kline of Savannah College of Art and Design as the new dean of the College of Fine Arts on the Portales campus. Kline will officially begin September 14 of the fall semester.

Kline is enthusiastic about his new position at ENMU. “I was looking for a university that had a student focus like Eastern does,” explains Kline. “My wife loves the west so when the position was open at Eastern we saw it all come together and I applied.”

Kline is looking forward to continuing the success of the college of fine arts by linking more of the artistic fields to each other. Kline says by creating the “synergy” between disciplines then “we are not locked down to one specific art form.” He explains, “filmmakers can learn from painters and actors can learn from sculptors; it’s all about creating opportunities to find the commonalities and enhance our skills.”

ENMU President Steven Gamble says, “We are fortunate to employ a dean of fine arts of the caliber of Dr. Kline.”
Jamie Laurenz, vice president of academic affairs at ENMU adds, “Dr. Kline combines significant professional and administrative experience with a passion and enthusiasm for the arts that bodes well for the future of the college.”

Kline will move his wife, Tiffany, and his daughter, Maybelline, to Portales. “Life is a constant process of change and we are very enthusiastic about coming to Portales,” says Kline. “My daughter is just turning five so this is a great time for us to move and it’s a great place to move to.”

Kline’s wife will be the proud owner of a new car because of the long distance between Portales and the larger cities surrounding the area.  “I will be happy to drive my 400-year-old car until the end of time so she can have a new one,” says Kline.

Kline is anticipating his arrival on campus and is happy to have an open-door policy. “I hope to meet my new colleagues and students as soon as possible so just come right up and say ‘hi,’” says Kline.

Kline attended Colorado State University for his bachelor’s degree, The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. for his master’s degree and earned his doctorate in fine arts at Texas Tech University.

Dr. John Olson will continue to serve as the interim dean of the College of Fine Arts until Kline’s start date.

Campus fountain gets facelift
Story and photos by Robin Haislett
Communication Services

Fountain

For those students returning to Eastern’s campus this fall, they will be greeted by a new sight in the middle of campus; a recently remodeled fountain.

“It was a 1982 structure that needed a facelift,” says Dr. Patrice Caldwell. “The old fountain was very inefficient in terms of water, maintenance and money. We had students commenting that there were very few greyhounds on campus and we thought the 75th anniversary of Eastern would be a perfect time to add some to the centerpiece of campus.”

The fountain features two life-size statues of greyhounds facing the Campus Union Building while the opposite side consists of an arrangement of malpais stone with strategically placed water outlets. Various grasses and rock landscaping surround the structure which took only a month to complete.

“At first when they were working on it, it was kind of a mess, but it turned out much better than I expected,” says Paul Montgomery, a senior graphic design major. “After seeing the empty fountain in the wintertime, I think it is much better because it will look attractive year round.”

The new design of the campus fountain reduces water waste, maintenance and is asthetically pleasing year round.

The new design was created by Lance Switzer of High Plains Turf Farms Inc. in Clovis. Mr. Switzer redesigned the look of the fountain to have more of a water effect while using less water.

“We were very lucky to work with them. He designed it and one month later we turned on the water which was really amazing,” says Dr. Caldwell.

In an effort to be more “green” at ENMU, the new fountain uses only 20% of the water that the old fountain used. In addition to the reduced water capacity, the water in use is constantly recycling and filtered for continuous use.

More work will be done to the fountain according to Dr. Caldwell. “It’s such an attractive centerpiece and the dogs are so expressive,” remarks Dr. Caldwell.

“I think it looks much newer and it is much more practical because it uses less water,” says Brittany Chrisman, a junior history major. “I love the greyhounds; they’re gorgeous.”

The revamped and “greener” fountain is set to be dedicated during ENMU’s 75th anniversary Dawg Days freshman orientation, Aug. 15-18.

1930's replica quilt to be raffled off for 75th anniversary
Story and photo by Erin Griffith
Communication Services

This year is a historic year for Eastern New Mexico University. To commemorate its 75th anniversary Dr. Judith Haislett, Vice President of Student Affairs, has sewn a 1934 replica quilt to be raffled off during homecoming.

“I wanted to do something to contribute to the 75th anniversary, so I decided to make a traditional 1930s quilt to raffle off for money for improvements to the fountain area.  All the proceeds will go to that cause,” said Dr. Haislett, who has made over 200 quilts and who has been professionally quilting for 10 years.

QuiltThe queen size quilt with its four accompanying pillows will be on display at several Eastern events throughout the fall semester.  The winner will have his/her name drawn at half time during the homecoming game. Tickets can be purchased for $5 per ticket or $10 for three tickets in the alumni office at ENMU or at any event which the quilt is present.

“The quilt uses traditional 1930s fabric designs and the pattern which was typical of the period is called the Dresden Plate,” says Dr. Haislett, who spent approximately a month of evenings working on the quilt.

According to Dr. Haislett, the Dresden Plate has soft lines and curves, which reflected the need for a gentler world during the depression. Traditionally the fabric used for the background and backing would have been muslin and the top would have been pieced together from flour sacks. The reason these types of patterns were popular was because quilters could use all the small scraps of fabric they had instead of needing to purchase a large piece.

Pastels were also immensely popular in the 1930s, because according to Dr. Haislett, the patents on the dyes used to make pastel fabrics were surrendered with the fall of Germany in WWI, so it was the first time these colors were readily available.

This particular quilt is 100 percent cotton and is a wonderful tribute to the 1930s and Eastern’s 75th anniversary.

ENMU student competes in Mrs. United States National Pageant
Story and photo by Robin Haislett
Communication Services

Eastern New Mexico University can add another name to the list of students who achieved great feats. Noel Hunt of Clovis now holds the title of Mrs. New Mexico 2009 and placed 14th in the nation during the Mrs. United States National Pageant this past July 22 and 23. The 22-year-old is a senior broadcast journalism major at ENMU, a wife and mother working in Clovis.
Noel Hunt
As part of her new title, Hunt is searching for groups and events that she can help promote. “It’s not like I want to stay cooped up in my house all day. If there is a fundraiser or an event going on, I want to make an appearance and use my title to draw some attention to the cause,” explains Hunt. “Now, being a state-wide spokesperson, I can speak for smaller voices that couldn’t normally be heard – not that my voice is any bigger but when you’re in the limelight, people pay attention a little more.”

Hunt says she has come across some who do not grasp the enormity of the title. “Some people don’t think it’s such a big thing because I’m from such a small area; but it’s not just Clovis and Portales, I’m representing all of New Mexico which is such an honor,” says Hunt.

Hunt’s platform is breast cancer awareness and is looking to partner with fundraising groups donating 100 percent of the proceeds to research. “It’s affecting so many people in the world and sometimes we’re blind to it,” says Hunt.

Hunt is pursuing her degree in communication because she is interested in doing a lot of different things with her life. “I discovered all the directions a communications degree could go and I wanted to get something I could do anything with,” says Hunt. Though Hunt enjoys the attention and being in front of the camera, she is also rounding out her experience by learning other aspects of the media.

The Floyd graduate says she credits ENMU in part for helping her develop herself as a person. She now steps outside of her comfort zone makes an effort to welcome students who do not immediately fit in. “I’ve become very outgoing and I’ll talk to people like the Chinese students and others who aren’t comfortable here yet,” explains Hunt. “I’ve learned so much from people at Eastern and everyone has something to offer no matter who they are.”

The faculty, staff and students greatly influenced her decision to attend ENMU. “Everyone here has been extremely friendly. My teachers are really great and they’ve helped me prepare for life outside of school.”
Hunt does not have plans to compete in nation-wide pageants again but she is not ruling out the idea. “Maybe in 15 years or so, depending how things go,” laughs Hunt.

Our Names are Moranda and Jeffrey

Moranda, almost 15 and her brother Jeffrey, almost 14 are looking for a permanent, loving, place to call home.  Moranda and Jeffrey are not currently placed together, but efforts are underway to reunite them.  Moranda is best described as smart and caring with a wonderful personality.  She is creative and intelligent, and dreams of becoming a professional dancer.  Due to these children’s history of abuse, neglect and abandonment, Moranda (and Jeffrey) are increasingly less hopeful that they will find their forever home, and any prospective family will need to be adaptable to their individual needs, wants and desires, and have a great deal of patience as they learn to trust adults.  Moranda and Jeffrey have several other siblings with whom they will need to remain in contact with over the years, in the hopes that this relationship can eventually become more healthy and productive.  A good fit for Moranda and Jeffrey would be a two parent home with no other children so that they can receive undivided love and attention.  Moranda loves music, dancing, and going shopping.  She would do well with a female role model who would be willing to engage with and support and encourage her natural talents and abilities.

Jeffrey is a delightful, shy, young man who truly wishes to be adopted into a permanent loving home.  He loves being outdoors, and is active, friendly and intelligent. He is curious and inquisitive, and likes to try new things (with encouragement).  Jeffrey gets along very well with others, and makes friends easily.  Due to his and his sister’s history, he can be mistrustful of adults, and can tend to disbelieve them-so don’t make promises you can’t keep!  Both Jeffrey and Moranda do well in school, though they will need ongoing encouragement, and a family who will actively engage with them as they both tend to struggle with math in particular.  Jeffrey would do very well with a father figure willing to spend quality time with him and who will take an active interest in providing him with support, guidance and who will be a good role model.  No out of State families will be considered for these children.  Fully approved and licensed families are encouraged to contact: Scott Temple Adoptions Consultant/Placement Specialist
