Vic and Tory Visited by Albuquerque Journal
On Tuesday, columnist Leslie Linthicum and photographer Richard Pipes from the Albuquerque Journal came to ENMU for an "UpFront" column on Vic and Tory, ENMU's Greyhound dogs. On Thursday, the column ran on the front page of the Journal – as well as a link to a video and photos shot by Ms. Linthicum and Mr. Pipes.

It's a Dog's Life

PORTALES - Two big, furry gray mascots - Ralph and Roxie Greyhound - have pumped up crowds at Eastern New Mexico University basketball and football games for decades.
Earlier this month, two new dogs came to town.
In an effort to boost school spirit and give a couple of rescue dogs a home, ENMU decided to adopt the two greyhounds, which had been retired from dog track racing.
The university had a contest to name the pups — Vic and Tory won — and on Dec. 1 the dogs settled into a campus apartment with two doting students who immediately began discussing play dates and nap times and beaming like proud fathers.
Six volunteer walkers were tapped from among a dozen volunteers, dog beds and toys were purchased and donated by excited ENMU staffers, and the small army that is the Pre-Vet Club pitched in to baby-sit the dogs during classroom hours.
The move, to the surprise of much of Portales, set off a dog fight. Not between Vic and Tory; they sometimes wrestle over their stuffed ducks, but it's only affectionate play. Without knowing it, ENMU had waded into a national controversy over live animal mascots for high school and college sports teams.
Animal Protection of New Mexico called the ENMU adoption an "ill-fated and inhumane plan" and launched a campaign to put pressure on the university to abandon it. The group cited concerns that the dogs would be kept in a "grim warehouse," turned out on a "barren plot of packed earth" and deprived of the consistent care of a permanent home.
The vice president of Greyhound Pets of America National weighed in in support of Vic and Tory's new life. He said that a variety of living arrangements are appropriate for former racers and that the Portales dogs would probably lead an especially interesting and varied life on campus.
It seemed like one of those unfortunate controversies that get emotional and kind of mean even though everyone involved has sincere concerns and good intentions.
So I decided to see for myself what kind of college life Vic and Tory had found in Portales. Would they be eating cold pizza and lapping up bong water? Blasting their music loud and playing Hackey Sack? Studying like drones and pursuing the perfect GPA?
None of that was in evidence this week. The news is much more mundane and should (but probably won't) settle the hubbub.
Vic and Tory have settled in nicely. They have comfortable beds. They go for frequent walks on leashes. They get an hour of running time off leash once a day on a grassy and completely enclosed soccer field. They have coats for when it's really cold.
The dogs are campus celebrities by now, and they get patted and scratched and petted wherever they go.
"They're lovebugs," says Gilbert Valdez, a 23-year-old from Albuquerque pursuing a master's in counseling, who is one of the dogs' keepers. "I'm treating them like a father. I'm honored to actually be a part of this."
His 22-year-old roommate, student body President Dallas Ellsworth, is a junior majoring in graphic design. He grew up in Ramah on the Navajo reservation, surrounded by animals, and leapt at the chance to be part of the mascot program.
"I've been learning a lot about the dogs, and I'm learning a lot about myself," Ellsworth said. "More responsibility and how to be responsible for another life."
When Ellsworth and Valdez take a few days off campus for Christmas break next week, a faculty department head will host the dogs at her home.
(The dogs' food has been donated for life, as has a veterinarian's care and the services of a dog trainer. Any other costs related to the dogs are being covered by donations, so don't worry that your taxes are going toward doggie treats.)
The student handlers are slowly introducing Vic and Tory to crowds and noise (a president's reception of 100 people, a band rehearsal) and the dogs so far have been calm and gregarious. If all goes well, the dogs will make their public debut at the Jan. 23 basketball home game.
You might think that racing dogs (Vic and Tory had limited racing careers at a track in Phoenix) would be high-energy, hyper dogs that need a big house and tons of exercise. They actually have two speeds: 40 mph and napping. Valdez and Ellsworth have been enjoying the Christmas break by watching a lot of CSI reruns with Vic and Tory snoozing nearby.
University President Steven Gamble has met with the program's critics and says he would make changes to the way Vic and Tory are being integrated onto campus if he thought changes were needed.
"But what validates our approach best is the dogs themselves," Gamble told me. "Their body language has been completely positive."
We humans love to ascribe thoughts and emotions to animals, and they usually reveal more about us than about our pets.
But Gamble is probably onto something by paying attention to Vic and Tory's wagging tails: These are happy, well-adjusted dogs. Valdez and Ellsworth are devoted dads. When they're in class, the dogs have a bedroom-sized nap room at the agriculture building and they get walks every hour or two.
That's good for now, the critics might say. But what about next year, or the next? Won't the dogs miss a forever family?
There will be change. Valdez and Ellsworth will get their degrees and move on. New students will come in, they will become Vic and Tory's moms and dads and they will also learn lessons about life and love and responsibility.
Vic and Tory will love their new moms and dads and they'll run and take long naps and offer their heads to be scratched by hundreds of new adoring ENMU students.
    It's a dog's life. And a good one.

Employee/Alumni Briefs

Dr. Anthony B Schroeder, professor emeritus, participated in the Military Installation Voluntary Education Review (MIVER) at the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, NC.  Institutions reviewed were Boston University, Southern Illinois University, Park University, and Cravin Community College along with the base education office.

Michael F. Shaughnessy has been asked to serve on the “Begabungszentrum Bayern GbR,” the Bavarian Committee for Gifted and Talented Students, located in Bavaria German. More information can be found about this organization at  http://www.begabungszentrum-bayern.de/team/

Sean Shepherd, an Eastern graduate working in Golden Library, recently presented at the first Orbital Space Debris Removal Conference. He says:

"I just returned after presenting at the first-ever Orbital Debris Removal conference in the Washington, D.C., area. I presented an idea to remove the space junk, and represented ENMU. The conference was truly an amazing experience. My presentation went well, and I was approached by scientists from Northrop Grumman and Boeing, also met with others who had some comments and tips to further any research.

Many there were surprised that I only began this quest late last summer and that I am not a scientist by trade, as most presenters had been working on their projects for several years. None of the over 300 attendees had ever heard of Eastern New Mexico University, but when I mentioned it being 96 miles from Roswell, all knew where it was then.

I was encouraged by Northrop Grumman to continue with the concept and submit an RFI form to DARPA for funding. John's Hopkins University announced that they will include my idea in their new course being taught on orbital debris removal, to further study its feasibility, and the National Research Lab offered me, and all others, the free use of the lab if the thing ever gets built.

Other scientists there had their abstract papers denied for presentation, so I was truly honored and excited to be one of the 50 chosen to present on the various subjects related to orbital debris. I am waiting now to see if DARPA publishes my concept next week, as I was asked to sign over temporary copyright permission. I will now further my research and present again in February."

(The Monday Memo will present a more detailed report on Mr. Shepherd's research in the spring when more people are on campus. For now, you will have to be content knowing that his research involves using foam in space.)

Christina Campbell

ENMU graduate Christina Campbell is the Weekend Meteorologist for the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. news with Anchor Andrea Gusty. Christina joined KTVA in 1993, and has worked for them on and off as both a news reporter and a meteorologist since then.

Because her uncle was news director for KBIM-TV in Roswell, where Christina was born and raised, she has spent most of her life either behind a news camera or in front of it.

However, she began her professional broadcast career in 1989, at WDJR-FM in Enterprise, Ala., where she was the station's news director.

From there she went to KTVF-TV in Fairbanks to work as a news reporter and anchor for the 6 and 11 p.m. news. In 1991, she moved to Anchorage and began learning how to fly airplanes. It was there she discovered her love for weather. She immediately began pursuing her meteorology credentials.

Other work experience includes working as a meteorologist for KTUU-TV in Anchorage, KJTV-TV and Telemundo 46 in Lubbock, Texas, where she was a bilingual meteorologist (English and Spanish) covering severe weather in "Tornado Alley" on one of the first Virtual Reality sets in the nation. And, Christina has also co-hosted morning radio shows on KASH- 104.1 with Jim Robbins, and from 1994-2000 on KOOL-97.3 with her long-time radio partner "Radio Phill" Remick.

Christina has a bachelor of science degree in broadcast journalism with double minors in marketing and speech from Eastern New Mexico University. Additionally, she has completed the Broadcast Meteorology Program at Mississippi State and holds her National Weather Association (NWA) Meteorology Seal.

Christina is the recipient of numerous Goldie awards in radio, including "Best Comedy Series," "Best Entertainment Series" and "Best Promo Series."

An avid supporter of higher education, Christina also works full-time for the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education. She currently serves as President of the Coalition of Alaskans Supporting Higher Education (CASHE), which puts on College Goal Sunday every year to help low-income and first-generation students apply for financial Aid.

Christina has two sons, six-year-old Micah and four-year-old Zechariah.
