Governor Appoints New ENMU Student Regent
by Roma Vivas

robert wachter

Governor Bill Richardson has appointed Robert Wachter as the new student regent at Eastern New Mexico University.

“I was very nervous when I got a phone call from the Governor’s office; I had to hold off a lot of emotions. After I hung up I did not know who to call first,” Wachter said.

The political science and Spanish double major student had applied to be a student regent back in October and went though several interviews, including one with Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president.

There were three candidates and the committee recommended Wachter, a Republican.  He is already very active in university activities as the vice president of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, member of Associated Students Activities Board and has made the dean’s list for two years.  He also interned with the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

“I am a very hard worker and very responsible.  If anyone needs help with anything, I am pretty available, twenty-four-seven. I want to give back to the community,” Wachter said.

The 21-year-old Clovis High School graduate admitted to almost transferring from Eastern to a bigger university, but the friendly atmosphere made the decision of staying easy.

“I love the people; I love the faculty.  The one-on-one I get from my advisors is something you don’t get at another campus. I have friends that go to bigger universities and they envy the personal touch I get here,” Wachter said.

Even though Wachter has been the official student regent for a few days, he already has plans of what he wants to accomplish.  The ENMU junior wants to push for the building of a football stadium closer to the university, try to maintain stable tuition for the students and let students know about regent policies that affect them.

Art Students Create Sculptures Around Campus

Students in Mollie Oblinger's Art 493 class created sculptures that will be on display around campus for about a week. Three of the sculptures will be located outside, two will be in the Golden Library and one will be in JWLA.

The sculptures relate to dwellings. Each student had to come up with an idea for where they could house their sculpture and then sculpt, to scale, a dwelling for the proposed inhabitant. Some inhabitants included are: a bookworm, aliens, larva and lichen.

The students are working up to installation art, defined by the book Installation Art by Claire Bishop as, "a term that loosely refers to the type of art into which the viewer physically enters, and which is often described as 'theatrical', 'immersive', or 'experimental'."

Human Rights Film Series on February 17The Human Rights Film Series presents:  FLOW:  How did a Handful of Corporations Steal our Water? at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Room 120 of the College of Education, Room 120.  The film is free and open to the public, followed by a discussion.

According to Dr. Doug Morris, “FLOW” is a searing documentary investigation into what many experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century: the world water crisis.

The film builds a case against the growing privatization of the world's dwindling fresh water supply with an unflinching focus on politics, pollution, human rights, and the emergence of a domineering world water cartel.
Interviews with scientists and activists intelligently reveal the rapidly building crisis, at both the global and human scale, and the film introduces many of the governmental and corporate culprits behind the water grab, while begging the question, "Can anyone really own water."

human rights film series Beyond identifying the problem, FLOW also gives viewers a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis and those developing new technologies, which are fast becoming blueprints for a successful global and economic turnaround.

Fact or Fiction

Women are more prone to accidents than men.

The answer: Fiction

Women drive and cross the street more safely than men. Men account for 70 percent of pedestrian fatalities since 1980. Between the ages of 18 and 45, males outnumber females as fatal crash victims by almost three to one according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Accidental deaths of all types--from falls, firearms, drownings, fires and food and other poisonings--also are more common among men than women.
