Employee/Alumni Briefs Dr. Manuel Varela, professor of biology, and his research personnel have had a paper accepted for publication by the refereed Journal of Membrane Biology. The title of the paper is “Evidence for the Transport of Maltose by the Sucrose Permease, CscB, of Escherichia coli.” Co-authors of the work are Yang Peng (M.S., ‘08), Dr. Sanath Kumar (Post-doctoral Fellow), Ricardo Hernandez (Graduate Student), Suzy Jones (Graduate Student), Kathleen Cadle (Undergraduate Student), and Kenneth Smith (Graduate Student). Dr. Anthony B. Schroeder, professor of communication, judged presentations in the Super Computing Contest on Saturday, Feb. 14. Wind Symphony/Symphonic Band Concert Set for March 1 The Eastern New Mexico University Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band, conducted by ENMU band director Dustin Seifert, will perform their joint concert on Sunday, March 1 at 3 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. Pieces by the Wind Symphony will include “Overture for Band” by Heins, “Elegy” by Chance, “Variations on America” by Ives, “Scenes from the Louvre” by Dello Joio, and “Pride of the Western Reserve” by Milford. Student Employee of the Year Nominations Sought – The office of Student Financial Aid seeks nominations for the 2008-2009 Eastern New Mexico University Student Employee of the Year. A review committee will evaluate the nominations. We are asking each department to nominate at least one student employee for outstanding service. The award will be based on the student’s reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, and uniqueness of contribution. Multiple nominations and supporting documents are welcomed. High Hopes Benefit Dinner-Dance Set for March 14 – The second annual “High Hopes Benefit Dinner-Dance,” sponsored by ENMU Athletics, is scheduled for Saturday, March 14. Proceeds from this event benefit community agencies in Roosevelt County. Last year’s event contributed $6,000 to the Yam Theater restoration.
Individual Crisis Intervention and Peer Support Training Set for March 19 – Counseling and Career Services and the ENMU Emergency Preparedness Committee will sponsor Individual Crisis Intervention and Peer Support Training on Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in SAS 234. The training is free to all interested faculty and staff. The trainer will be the Rev. Robert Barnes, Santa Fe Police Chaplain and international crisis/disaster responder. This is an intensive two-day training designed for a campus-wide approach to crisis; peer to peer and individually. You do not need to be a mental health professional to benefit from this training. The purpose of the training is to train volunteers who will move into action as paraprofessional counselors after a crisis has occurred. Their role is to normalize reactions and hopefully educate people about the signs of PTSD. February Construction Schedule for Campus – [schedule] 2009 Spring Fine Arts Calendar – [calendar] 'Analagous' Art Show Runs Through February 25 – The national juried art show “Analagous” will be displayed from Jan. 30 to Feb. 25 in the Runnels Gallery in Golden Library at the Eastern New Mexico University Portales campus. An opening reception will be held Friday, Jan. 30 from 5-7 p.m. in the same location. Exhibition hours are: Monday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 12 am, Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. This year’s juror is Lucy R Lippard,internationally known writer and activist. She is the author of 20 books on contemporary art and cultural criticism including her only novel I See/You Mean. “Analagous” has 39 pieces in its non-themed show consisting of paintings, photographs, prints, mixed media pieces, ceramics, and sculptures from 32 artists. Two pieces from photographers Alexandra Huddleston and Steven Rubin were chosen as best of show. Five honorable mentions include Matthew Gordillo, coordinator of the Upward Bound program at ENMU. Lippard has curated approximately 50 exhibitions worldwide and is the recipient of several awards including a 1968 Guggenheim Fellowship, two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the College Art Association's Frank Jewett Mather Award for art criticism. ENMU Employees Can Enter ‘Cup’ Art Exhibit Eastern New Mexico University in Portales will open its juried exhibit “A Cup of What…. What’s A Cup?” on March 16- April 10. This three-dimensional cup show will be displayed in Golden Library in the foyer. Mary Finneran, associate professor of art and a ceramicist, along with Christopher Calderón, Runnels Gallery manager and a mixed media artist, will jury the show. A monetary award is guaranteed for best of show, second and third place. All entry fees go toward awards. The award money is dependent upon the number of entries received.
