Gene Smith’s, College of Business, article “Business School Accreditation Bodies: Beneficial or Dysfunctional?” was published in the December 2008 edition of the Academy of Business Management Review. Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Dr. Kimmo Lehtonen of Finland have had a paper accepted for publication. Today's Martin Luther King Jr. Day March Ends on ENMU Campus – Join the Portales Cultural Affairs Committee for the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Commemorative March beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan, 19, from the Memorial Building, 200 E. 7th (located in City Park—7th and Abilene in Portales) and ending at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Tree on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University. After the march, at approximately 1 p.m., the Cultural Affairs Committee will honor the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. by picking up litter along the City’s mile on U.S. Highway 70 as part of “A National Day of Service – Make It a Day On, Not a Day Off.” The group will gather in the parking lot of the Roosevelt General Hospital. ENMU's MySpace Page Sponsoring Video Contest – ENMU's MySpace page is sponsoring a video contest with the theme of "Cool School ENMU."
The video should be between 30-60 seconds with no restriction on format, but should have a "Cool School ENMU" theme. (Nothing too risque, please.) The contest is open to all of ENMU's MySpace friends – high school students, college students, faculty and staff, the general public, etc.
Students Can Try Out for Greyhound Football Team on January 20 – Any students interested in trying out for and becoming a part of the Greyhound football team should show up at Room 2 of Greyhound Arena at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Staff will work on Jan. 19, but have previously voted to have a vacation day on Presidents' Day on Monday, Feb. 16. Safety Meetings Set for January 27 and 28 – The first safety meeting of the New Year will be on Safety and Leadership. Jan. 27 at 9:45 a.m. in the College of Business, Room 104, or on Jan. 28 at 1:15 p.m. in the College of Business, Room 104, or Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. at the Physical Plant. Please make arrangements to make the meeting. These meetings are for the safety of everyone and if everyone does not participate then the job is only half-safe. Final Total for United Way on Campus – ENMU-Portales' United Way fall pledge drive has officially closed. Congratulations to the ENMU community for their record-breaking support of United Way. Just over 25 percent of the ENMU community pledged or contributed $19,063 to assist community organizations. On-Campus Job Fair Set for January 28 – An On-Campus Job Fair for part-time student employees (work study or student hire), sponsored by ENMU Counseling and Career Services, will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, jan. 28 in the CUB Pecos Room. Civil Rights Presentation on February 3 – African-American Affairs is sponsoring a luncheon during "Black History Month" on Tuesday, Feb. 3 in the Pecos Room of the CUB. Defensive Driving Offered in January and February – In order to drive a university vehicle or an Enterprise vehicle for the university, the State of New Mexico requires you to have the six-hour National Safety Council Defensive Driving Certificate. The six-hour Defensive Driving Course will be offered Jan. 29 (Thursday) at 1 p.m. or Feb. 7 (Saturday) at 8 a.m. If you have taken the six-hour Defensive Driving Course, you must renew your six-hour certificate every four years. The four-hour Defensive Driving Course will be offered on Jan. 31 (Saturday) at 8 a.m. or Feb. 13 (Friday) at 1 p.m. If you are driving on a waiver at the Physical Plant, you must take the appropriate DDC course to keep driving a state-owned vehicle. Evaluations Changed to Fiscal Year – Human Resources reminds employees that the annual performance evaluation period has changed from a calendar year period to a fiscal year period. Latin to Be Offered for Spring Semester – Explore the roots of the English language by taking Latin for three credit hours this spring, and learn fascinating things about the last days of Pompeii. ENMU Has Fourth Lowest Tuition and Fees in Southwest – According to a study by the Chronicle of Higher Education, ENMU has the fourth lowest annual tuition and fees among 81 senior public colleges in the Southwest. ENMU's tuition and fees is listed at $3,342. [complete list] ENMU Offering Free Dual-Enrollment Classes for High School Students Eastern is offering a number of free dual-enrollment classes this spring for high school students. Students who pass the courses earn college credit. New Mexico education law now requires that every student who graduates from a public high school must earn at least one credit as an advanced placement, honors, dual credit or distance learning course. Classes can be taken online, on the ENMU campus, at their high with classes taught by high school instructors, and by videoconferencing. Students at Portales High School can also take course taught by ENMU professors at their school. Approximately 245 high school students took dual-enrollment classes during the fall. Listed below are the schools or school systems with which ENMU has a dual-enrollment agreement: Animas Public Schools Capitan Municipal Schools Each school offers at least one of the face-to-face classes below taught by one of their instructors: Principles of Horticulture (AG 221) The additional courses listed below are taught at Portales High School by high school instructors: General Physics (PHYS 151 & 151 L) The courses below are taught by ENMU professors at Portales High School: Intermediate Algebra (MATH 107) Students can also take any online class, which they are qualified for, that ENMU offers. Ms. Sweet comes to us from South Mountain Community College in Phoenix where she taught English Composition and developmental English and served as the Faculty Liaison for the Learning Assistance Center. Prior to going to Phoenix Linda taught creative writing for UNM-LA for six years and Adult Basic Education at the Jemez Pueblo for three years. Ms. Sweet is also a prolific writer accumulating dozens of published works over the past 30 years in various genres. Ms. Sweet will bring our vision for the College Success Program to life. She will teach English 101 and Reading 100 this semester while researching and implementing innovative college success strategies and support programs for college prep/developmental students. The Adult Education department welcomes back Yolanda Sanchez who has accepted the Adult Education Instructor and College Success Liaison position. Yolanda returns to Ruidoso after a short time in Denver where she worked in an elementary school as a reading intervention assistant. Before moving to Denver, Yolanda taught English as a Second Language, Citizenship and Spanish GED classes for the adult education program last year. She also worked with TANF-GED students in the TANF Challenge. Thanks to everyone that participated in the search and screening process and especially Holly Braden and Dinah Hamilton who spent much of their holiday break working on the committee as well as John Hemphill, Susie Morss, and Christy Neill.
