Tucson, AZ – Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) president Steven Gamble and Pima Community College (PCC) Chancellor Roy Flores signed an articulation agreement on June 29 between the two schools.

PCC students who graduate with an associate’s degree, apply to a related degree program at ENMU, and have a PCC grade-point average of at least 2.0 are guaranteed admission to ENMU.

Nine bachelor’s degrees are being offered by ENMU under the partnership:

  1. Bachelor’s of Applied Arts and Sciences with a concentration in Aviation Science
  2. Bachelor’s of Science with a major in Aviation Science
  3. Bachelor’s of Occupational Education with a major in Professional Technical Education

  6. Bachelor’s of Applied Arts and Sciences with a concentration in Hospitality Management

All of the bachelor’s degrees can be acquired by students without leaving Arizona – the  ENMU classes in the partnership programs are available fully online.  In addition, all undergraduate Pima students who enroll at ENMU can pay the New Mexico in-state tuition and fee rate ($148 for one semester credit-hour) if they enroll in six semester credit-hours or fewer at  ENMU.  The students can also enroll in additional hours at PCC to ensure full federal financial aid.

ENMU will accept the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) and allow up to 95 semester-credit hours from PCC toward its degrees. Many of the other programs will accept up to 84 transfer units. All bachelor’s programs require a minimum of 128 semester-credit hours. The Bachelor’s of Applied Arts and Sciences and Bachelor’s of Occupational Education are 3+1 programs, meaning that students may complete three years of coursework from PCC and one year from ENMU.

Separate from the articulation agreement, ENMU is offering in-state tuition rates to 50 students from Arizona. The difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition and fees at ENMU is substantial: In-state tuition and fees for full-time students (12-18 hours) at ENMU are $1,776 a semester; out-of-state students pay $4,551 a semester.

Persons interested in learning more about ENMU programs should talk with an advisor at Pima by calling 520. 206.4500. Information also is available by e-mailing enmu.transfer@enmu.edu or by calling Ronda Hutcherson, transfer student support specialist at ENMU, at 866.817.5333.

ENMU Grad Planted Some of ENMU's Original Elms
Photos and story bv Robin Haislett
ENMU Communication Services

For those who enjoyed the shade of the elm trees at th2 75th Anniversary picnic, you can thank this Eastern graduate.

william robert case

William Robert Case, know to most as “Billy Bob,” was 12 when hisBoy Scout troop volunteered to dig out the places set for the elm trees and plant them. “The building was all done but they didn’t have any money to open the school yet. Someone donated the trees when they were as big as my hand and we planted them two years before the school opened,” says Mr. Case.

Now a resident of Roswell, Mr. Case enrolled in classes at Eastern in 1939 and graduated in 1952. “I was trying to work through school and I joined the Air Corps, which is now the Air Force, while I was still in school so it took me a while,” he says.

Mr. Case was among the over 500 people at the picnic taking in the sights, sounds and cuisine of the 1930s-themed event.

ENMU Students Excavating Blackwater Draw
Photos and story by Robin Haislett
ENMU Communication Services
blackwater draw dig

For the first time since the 1960s, an abandoned site in Blackwater Draw is being actively excavated by Eastern New Mexico University anthropology students and faculty. This opportunity to uncover 13,000-year-old mammoth bones is a rare opportunity to most, but the students are becoming adjusted to the environment.

“We’ve been digging out here for about four weeks and in the beginning you’re all, ‘oh my gosh, this is over 10,000 years old,’ and now we’re all just like ‘eh, it’s a bone.’” jokes Erica Govich, an anthropology graduate student from Cleveland, Ohio. “We’re getting used to it and it hasn’t even been that long!”

Dr. David Kilby, assistant professor of anthropology, began teaching last fall and was particularly interested in becoming a part of ENMU's faculty for the opportunity to excavate this site. “This is one of the few sites in North America that shows humans were on this continent over 13,000 years ago,” explains Dr. Kilby.

The particular section being excavated was previously examined by an anonymous professor from the University of Paris. “When he abandoned the site, the professor took all the data with him, so everything he did is unpublished,” says Dr. Kilby.

The Blackwater Draw Museum and dig site are open year-round and volunteers are allowed on-site to help excavate at certain times. For more information, contact Matthew Hillsman at 575.562.2202.
