ENMU Hosting 75th Anniversary Picnic on June 28

The 1930s left its mark on the United States as an era of poverty, but during those difficult times a school was built that still stands, 75 years later, as a testament to the dedication of a community and its commitment to education.

In commemoration of the opening of Eastern New Junior College in 1934, Eastern New Mexico University will host a Founders’ Day Picnic on Sunday, June 28 from noon to 2 p.m.  Tickets are $6 and may be purchased at the ENMU Information Desk in the Administration Building or at the Portales or Clovis chambers of commerce.

Eastern’s story began in 1927, when Portales was designated as the site for the new “normal school.” In 1928, the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce raised $7,000 to buy 43 acres for the campus. By 1934, 145 students started school during a six-week summer session in the Administration Building, which was not yet completed.

Prior to the start of that school year, Eastern held a picnic and today a group of students, with the help of the administration, is working to recreate that memory. The 1930s-themed picnic will include fried chicken, one of the most popular dishes of the day, and games, speakers, music and memories.

“The picnic is an opportunity to be part of a historic event and for the school and the community to come together and celebrate,” said graduate student Bryan Hahn.

The student committee is seeking musicians to play 1930s bluegrass or jazz, as well as classic cars to display.  If interested, contact Hahn at 575.562.2778.

Please join Eastern in celebration of 75 years of student success.  For more information about the picnic, call 575.562.4490.

Moses is lovable and strives to be “good”.  He appreciates his personal space and appreciates the structure of a family.

Raymond is very energetic and charming.  He has a driving personality.

These brothers would like to remain together in a two parent home that can provide structure and supervision.  The brothers are very connected to their Hispanic culture and enjoy attending church as part of their cultural experience.  They would like to continue learning their Spanish language and are bilingual.  They enjoy various foods i.e. Mexican food, pizza and hamburgers.  They all enjoy swimming, bike riding, video games and going to the park.   They are in need of a loving, committed two-parent family who can provide ongoing structure and supervision.  For more information please contact Tana Hudson @ (575) 517-7903 or email tana.hudson@state.nm.us (best).
