Reading Clinic Beneficial to Students and Children

Eastern New Mexico University’s College of Education has reopened a summer reading clinic after its closure several years ago. Dr. Kathleen Donalson received grant money through CET grants and new faculty grants, which provided funds to purchase new materials.

The clinic is not only beneficial to children in the community but also to ENMU students who are receiving hands-on experience.  There are approximately 20 children throughout the community attending tutoring and there are 13 college students working in the clinic.

Dr. Donalson, Dan Greathouse and Shona Thomason tested children from 1st-8th grade whose parents felt their child struggled with reading and those children had an opportunity to attend the reading clinic during the month of June.

According to Carolyn Sloan who is working in the clinic, summer is a good time to work on these skills because students are not busy with other classes and it keeps them engaged in reading over the break.

Dr. Donalson, who works in the clinic with both the college students and children, said that the clinic is especially valuable because the children receive individualized instruction. The clinic works on reading, writing and “word work.”

Ms. Sloan said, “It has a good effect on struggling readers who need practice and the impact can be lasting.”  Ms. Sloan said her child has already improved.  Each day she modifies her lessons based on the progress made the day before.

“It has been a win-win situation for everyone. College students and children in the community have all benefited tremendously,” Dr. Donalson said.  She hopes that the reading clinic will be open every summer.

Portales Art Guild Works Displayed at Runnels Gallery

Art GalleryArt GalleryArt Gallery

The Runnels Gallery in Golden Library at Eastern New Mexico University is displaying works from La Escalera, the Portales Art Guild, until August 13. Each member of  La Escalera is displaying up to two pieces of art until the close of the show.

Albert Calderon, Runnels Gallery manager, sought out La Escalera to fill the empty gallery space for the summer. “With all the events going on for the 75th anniversary, we didn’t want to close the gallery so I asked them if they wanted to display their work here,” says Calderon.

“It’s a very eclectic mix of pieces,” says Calderon. “They’re traditional, but there are a lot of different types of pieces like architecture, landscape pieces, mixed media and all sorts of different works.”

The name La Escalera, translates from Spanish to “the ladder,” was chosen by the Portales Art Guild because it is seen as achieving higher goals. They meet from September to May once a month and will hold their first meeting Monday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Golden Acres Community Room.

For more information regarding the Runnels Gallery contact Calderon at 575-562-2607. For information regarding La Escalera contact Marcea Clive at 575-356-5244.

General Comments and Compliments

To ENMU-Portales Community:

Eastern New Mexico University's Founders' Day Picnic, the first event of the University's 75th anniversary year, was a tremendous success.  With perfect weather and a stunning setting on the lawn in front of the Administration Building, the entire event went like clock-work thanks to the organization of Dr. Janet Roehl's Cases and Campaigns class.  Our platform speakers were eloquent in documenting how much the University/community partnership has enriched all our lives. Mayor Ortega's proclamation from the City of Portales was a special honor, congratulating the regents, students, faculty, staff, and administration on this 75th year of service to New Mexico.

Special thanks are due to KENW for the ENMU historical spots that have been playing on radio and television, to the Physical Plant for a campus in perfect condition, Sodexo for their work with Dr. Merlene Olmsted's students to prepare a 1930's style box lunch, to Communication Services for promotion, to Campus Police for a safe environment, to our sound man, Micky Morgan, and all our faculty, student and staff volunteers, including the students and staff of Upward Bound.

This was a special day in the history of Eastern New Mexico University. Thanks to all who made it a success.

Steve Gamble
President

Students' Message to Wendel for the Week

While Wendel’s away
The students will play
His cubicle was so pretty
What an awful pity
He told them to keep it clean
Unfortunately, it is no longer pristine
This challenge he should not have made
And so we say...be afraid :)
