Internal Grant Applications Due by April 10 – Please note the change in the application process for internal grants for spring 2009. The VPAA has requested the committee change the timeline for requests. In the past the spring applications have been for regular faculty only with another round of awards in the fall for new faculty.

With new faculty having been on campus for such a short time (Aug.-Jan.) it is unfair to request that they not only settle into their new teaching, advising, as well as other faculty responsibilities and be prepared to write and submit a request for grant funding in such a short time.

Therefore, effective spring 2009, tere will only be one call for applications. Applications will be accepted from all full-time tenure track faculty members with priority given to new and probationary faculty.

Internal Faculty Research and Instructional Development Grant Applications are now being accepted (open to all eligible tenure-track faculty: see the application packet for eligibility criteria and application format requirements).

Access the application from on the web at:

http://inside.enmu.edu/forms/grant-contract/internal-grant-application.pdf

The submission form automatically goes to Student Affairs. After their approval, it is forwarded to the Monday Memo for publication.

Elisa and Jesus Available for Adoption
kids

Elissa, 7, and Jesus, 5, are wonderful kids in need of their “forever family”!

Elissa is very artistic, and loves to do a variety of arts and crafts. She is also energetic and athletic and enjoys riding her bike and swimming in particular. Her worker describes her as a dynamic and strong willed child who is loving, affectionate and loves to laugh! She attends church regularly and uses prayer as a source of solace and strength. Elissa tends to want to be the center of attention, has a low tolerance for frustration and has taken on the role in the past as parent towards her brother.

Jesus is described as engaging, affectionate and very playful. He loves being active, and really enjoys school. Learning new things is a great source of pride to him. While Jesus likes to assert his independence, he is learning to accept guidance and redirection from adults. Currently, he receives special education services to address speech and language delays, and he needs continued help with being inattentive, hyperactive and he has a low tolerance for frustration as well. Jesus is very resilient and continues to make developmental gains with the support of his foster parents in a loving and structured environment.

A two-parent Hispanic family is preferable, as Jesus in particular has bonded quite well with his current foster father.  ST

WOMEN’S HISTORY SPEAKER—In honor of Women’s History Month, the Portales Public Library and the New Mexico Humanities Council are sponsoring an appearance by Rosemary Keefe at the local library on March 20, 2009.  Please join us as Rosemary Keefe brings “Mabel Dodge Luhan in Taos” to life in her Chautauqua performance of a unique and unconventional woman who epitomized East Coast high society during the early 20th century.  Having fallen in love with New Mexico in 1917, she made the adventurous and unexpected move to Taos, bringing with her friends, family and her marvelous social influence.  She made it her personal mission to host artists at her home, while herself making a personal study of philosophy, life and spirituality.  Inspired by the local scenery and company, widely known individuals such as Willa Cather, D. H. Lawrence, Ansel Adams and Georgia O’Keeffe stayed at her home, frequently joining in her lively debates and discussions.  Mabel later married a member of the Taos Pueblo, Antonio Luhan, creating yet another interesting chapter in her life.  She came to our state a world-weary New Yorker, but the primitive appeal of New Mexico allowed her to transform her life personally and philosophically.

Rosemary Keefe, Ph.D., has taught writing, literature, and women’s studies in the USA and abroad.  She served as Dean of Faculties at University of Wisconsin-Superior, Head of English at Missouri State University, and Director of Women’s Studies at Rolins College.  She has published books and articles and presented research on African American and feminist drama and on women’s lives and feminist spirituality for the past thirty years.

The Women’s History Program will be held in the Meeting Room of the Portales Public Library on Friday, March 20, 2009.  The program will start at 11:00 a.m. with a brunch and will be followed at noon by Rosemary’s entertaining presentation.  In conjunction with our program, the library is sponsoring a showing of quilt work by local women artist, sharing with everyone the beautiful vision and history to be found in our own community.

All functions are free of charge, and everyone is warmly invited to attend.  For more information please contact Danielle Swopes at 356-3940.
