WOMEN’S HISTORY SPEAKER—In honor of Women’s History Month, the Portales Public Library and the New Mexico Humanities Council are sponsoring an appearance by Rosemary Keefe at the local library on March 20, 2009.  Please join us as Rosemary Keefe brings “Mabel Dodge Luhan in Taos” to life in her Chautauqua performance of a unique and unconventional woman who epitomized East Coast high society during the early 20th century.  Having fallen in love with New Mexico in 1917, she made the adventurous and unexpected move to Taos, bringing with her friends, family and her marvelous social influence.  She made it her personal mission to host artists at her home, while herself making a personal study of philosophy, life and spirituality.  Inspired by the local scenery and company, widely known individuals such as Willa Cather, D. H. Lawrence, Ansel Adams and Georgia O’Keeffe stayed at her home, frequently joining in her lively debates and discussions.  Mabel later married a member of the Taos Pueblo, Antonio Luhan, creating yet another interesting chapter in her life.  She came to our state a world-weary New Yorker, but the primitive appeal of New Mexico allowed her to transform her life personally and philosophically.

Rosemary Keefe, Ph.D., has taught writing, literature, and women’s studies in the USA and abroad.  She served as Dean of Faculties at University of Wisconsin-Superior, Head of English at Missouri State University, and Director of Women’s Studies at Rolins College.  She has published books and articles and presented research on African American and feminist drama and on women’s lives and feminist spirituality for the past thirty years.

The Women’s History Program will be held in the Meeting Room of the Portales Public Library on Friday, March 20, 2009.  The program will start at 11:00 a.m. with a brunch and will be followed at noon by Rosemary’s entertaining presentation.  In conjunction with our program, the library is sponsoring a showing of quilt work by local women artist, sharing with everyone the beautiful vision and history to be found in our own community.

All functions are free of charge, and everyone is warmly invited to attend.  For more information please contact Danielle Swopes at 356-3940.
