Faculty Excellence Awards Presented at Commencement
Award recipients from left to right - Dr. Kathie Good, Dr. Robin Wells, Neil Rutland (Dr. Jamie Laurenz presenting) and Dr. Darren Pollock. (photo by Roma Vivas)

Faculty Awards for Excellence were presented to four faculty at Saturday's commencement. Below their names are the comments made by President Gamble.

Award for Advising
Dr. Kathie Good

The 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Advising goes to an Eastern graduate who also holds a doctorate of education from Texas Tech, Dr. Kathie Good.

For seven years, Dr. Good has embraced advisement as an opportunity to model and teach students about professional empowerment, reflection, and choices.  Dr. Good is a tenured associate professor of special education, chair of the Educational Studies Department and assistant dean in the College of Education and Technology.

In addition to her administrative and teaching duties, it is not uncommon for her to sweep students into her tutelage at Wal Mart, the county fair, basketball games, lost souls in the hallways or in virtual space, and take telephone calls from former students who say, “Dr. Good, I don’t know if you remember me, but I have a question…..”.
Dr. Good is the 2006 author of the special education alternative licensure program that currently holds about 50 students. In addition, her advising loads include more than 50 graduate students and a proportionate amount of undergraduate special education majors shared with Drs. Robin Wells and Mike Shaughnessy.  Quite often one sees her also advising students in any one of the 10 academic programs of the Educational Studies department.

We are proud to extend to Dr. Kathie Good the honor of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Advising which for her is deep-rooted within the authentic spirit of Eastern New Mexico University.

Award for Service
Dr. Robin Wells

One look at the experience and expertise of the Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Service explains her exemplary service record to the teaching profession. Dr. Robin Wells, assistant professor in special education, has dedicated 32 years in the field of public school education in the areas of special education and speech/language pathologist.

She has a doctorate in Early Childhood, Special Education and Transdisciplinary Studies from the University of Kansas.   Dr. Wells represents ENMU with the New Mexico Public Education divisions for special education and early childhood education. These include groups for policy and licensure development and grant funding for inclusive classrooms across New Mexico.

In her short six years at Eastern, Dr. Wells can be found providing service to organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, the Portales Woman’s Club, the Roosevelt County Literacy Council, KENW, the CTE Taos conference, Presbyterian church, and many program, department, college, and university committees.  As one student stated, “I admire Dr. Well’s passion and spirit for community involvement, but I wouldn’t want to follow her around.”

Dr. Wells also embodies the spirit inherent in comprehensive university professors who can spin their service contributions into a significant influence on teaching and pedagogies. We are proud to honor Dr. Robin Wells as this year’s honoree as the Presidential Award for Excellence in Service.

Award for Teaching
Neil Rutland

Completing his fifteenth year of service to ENMU this spring, Neil Rutland is a faculty member for whom the teaching mission of the university is reflected in all aspects of his work.  Neil, who holds degrees from Tennessee Tech and the University of North Texas, maintains a large percussion studio in the Department of Music and conducts the Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band.

He is associate director of ENMU’s bands, and is instrumental to the success of the Greyhound Sound marching band and to concert performances throughout the year.  In addition to teaching orchestration and percussion methods, he offers technology courses in the music curriculum, coordinates the department’s computer lab in support of those courses and others, and oversees the recording of all performances.  And in the past three years he has been active in ENMU’s new interdisciplinary Digital Cinema Arts degree program.

A student nominating him for this award puts it simply: “He is always there for his students if they need him.”  He sets a high standard for students who work with him, but very quickly shows them that his role is to help them reach that standard.

Neil’s commitment to teaching also extends beyond his own studio, classroom, and department.  He serves in university-wide roles, recently as chair of the General Education Committee; and he is active locally, across the state and beyond in music education organizations, clinics, and outreach.

The admiration he has earned among colleagues, current students and alumni demonstrates that he is truly an excellent teacher.

I am proud to acknowledge Mr. Neil Rutland as Eastern’s recipient of the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Award for Research/Scholarly/Creative Activity

Dr. Darren Pollock

Dr. Pollock came to us in 2001.  He is a well-known and well-respected zoologist who studies beetles.  He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Manitoba and his doctorate from the University of Alberta.  Our Canadian colleague has been all over the world collecting beetles.  He has published more than 60 papers and book chapters dealing with the relationships between beetles and their natural history.

Whenever there is a major meeting or publication concerning his special group of beetles (Tenebrionoidea), or beetles as a whole (…by the way, there are more species of beetles than anything else out there…), Dr. Pollock is invited to present or contribute.  He is so well-known that another scientist even named a species after him!

Our students know him well, especially for all the “critters” he likes to bring in to show them in the freshman biology courses.  I am happy to name Dr. Darren Pollock as the recipient of the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Research.

Each of these honorees receives an award that can be displayed in their office and a check for $2,000.  These are nice to receive, but more important is the recognition these faculty members have received from their peers.  Congratulations again to our honorees today.

ENMU Foundation Honors Distinguished Emeritus Faculty
faculty
(L-R) Carl Richardson, Thurman Elder, Dale Davis and Ray Gormley (photo by Noelle Bartl)

Dr. Carl Richardson
Carl Richardson was a professor of physical education and served Eastern New Mexico University for some thirty-seven years in health and physical education. He was the coach for five sports during his tenure. His baseball team won fifty-two games between 1949 and 1953, losing only twelve. He coached track during the 1952-53 year.  Between 1954 and 1963, the football teams he coached won fifty-nine games and lost thirty-seven, with an undefeated season in 1957 and a fourth-place national finish. Seven players from those teams were All-Americans. In 1964, Carl became the head tennis coach and led those teams to one-hundred thirteen wins, thirty-two losses, and four NAIA District 7 Championships. In 1975 he began coaching golf, producing four NAIA District 7 Championships, fourteen NAIA All-District 7 golfers, one All-American, and four All-Lone Star Conference golfers. Carl has been named NAIA District 7 Coach of the Year nine times in three different sports. He was also director of the School of Health and Physical Education. He retired in 1986 as professor emeritus of health and physical education.

Dr. Thurman Elder
Thurman Elder came to ENMU as an assistant professor of mathematics in fall 1969. He received tenure in 1974 and advanced through the academic ranks to professor in 1983. Thurman was chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences from 1981 through 1997. He published his research in journals of applied mathematics and presented at professional meetings. He was a visiting research professor at the Institute for Numerical Transport Theory. Thurman served on many committees and chaired search committees for faculty, coaches, athletic director, deans and vice presidents. He was the faculty athletic representative to the NCAA for many years. He was inducted into ENMU’s Athletic Hall of Honors in 2004. After thirty-seven years, Thurman retired in 2006 as professor emeritus of mathematics and computer science, of which the last nine years he served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  After his retirement, he was asked to come back and be the director of the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences Program working with students primarily in New Mexico and Texas, as well as students from around the country.

Dr. Dale Davis
Dale Davis held many positions at ENMU, but is most proud of his role as a teacher.  His success as a teacher was validated in 2004 when he was selected the U.S. Professor of the Year for New Mexico by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Dale began his career at ENMU in the College of Business in 1982 as an assistant professor of marketing. He was promoted to associate professor and tenured in 1986; he earned the rank of professor in 1997. He had previously taught at Berry College and Kennesaw College in Georgia. Dale’s scholarly pursuits involved applied research that supported his teaching. He was published in academic journals and presented numerous papers at regional, national and international conferences. During his time at ENMU, Dale served three years as coordinator of graduate business programs, two years as a department chair and three years as dean of the College of Business. In addition, he served on many standing and ad hoc committees, as well as performing community service in Portales and Roosevelt County. Dale retired in 2006 after twenty-four years at ENMU as professor emeritus of marketing.

Mr. Ray Gormley
Ray Gormley was hired the summer of 1974 as assistant professor in marketing.  He taught vocational teacher certification classes required for teacher certification by the State Department of Education through the College of Business – Business Education Department, as well as at other sites throughout New Mexico. Ray’s ENMU classes were for students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in marketing and business education. Other sites focused on classes primarily for individuals from industry who were hired to teach industrial education programs in high schools and community colleges.  In addition, his on-site technical assistance was provided to business and marketing education programs throughout New Mexico. Ray served as state advisor for New Mexico DECA (student organization for high school students enrolled in distributive education programs (now called marketing education).  He also served as state advisor for the collegiate division of DECA (Delta Epsilon Chi) and as state advisor for New Mexico OEA  - organization for high school business education students (now Business Professionals of America) for several years.  During the last five years at ENMU, Ray focused on providing services to five vocational student organizations in New Mexico.  He was recognized by National DECA for 40 years of service to New Mexico DECA and National DECA with DECA’s highest award (Honorary Life Membership) in April of 2008. He retired in 2005 as assistant professor emeritus of marketing.

(L-R) Drs. Jim Constantopoulos and Tony Gennaro

"A Touch on Nature," a production of KENW-FM, is being aired at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesdays on 89.5 FM (KENW-FM). The weekly series, written by Dr. Tony Gennaro, Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Biology, consists of 78 three-minute episodes.

Dr. Jim Constantopoulos, professor of geology, and Dr. Gennaro exchange comments on nature intended to spark interest, expand love and erase fears about wildlife. They answer such questions as why do leaves change colors in the fall, what is the purpose of the wolf howl, what are some falsehoods about elephants, are tarantulas harmful to humans, etc.

Tune in each Wednesday for an attention-grabbing experience.

ENMU Grad Writes "'Crazy Town Roswell'
first-person account by Mike Jimenez
mike jemenz
I am a native of Roswell, New Mexico, and spent a lot of my life on Mulberry Street, located on the East side of the city close to the Chihuahuita barrio.

The first book I have completed and am trying to publish is titled, “The Mulberry Street Stories,” and covers a family over a period of approximately 40 years.  The book is about a dysfunctional Chicano family, husband Gilberto and wife Licha, and their four sons, Beto, Rocky, Mike-o and Nando.

Themes covered are abuse, dishonesty, gangs, drug use and death.
The second book I am currently working on is titled, “Crazy Town Roswell,” and is about a Parole/Probation officer and his three clients; a gang banger, drug dealer, and a woman strung out on drugs.  I have also created a web site by the same name, www.crazytownroswell.com which will feature excerpts from both books, a short story, and several poems.

Generally, the writing I show on this website is of a dark nature.   On my cover letters to publishers, I always say the following:  In Roswell, having a drug dealer in the family isn’t always such a bad thing. The reason is if they are selling drugs, then you no longer have to support them and you know that, eventually, they will be caught and then they become someone else’s responsibility.

I hope everyone takes a moment to read what you will find on the website, and I hope to have both books available for purchase as either E-books and/or hard back editions.

I currently teach at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, am single, and the father of two sons.  I graduated from ENMU-R (AA), and ENMU (BA) and (MA) with degrees in English.

Courses available include SPAN 293/405: Grammar Review from 12:40-2:50 p.m. and SPAN 210-410: Spanish Culture from 3-5:10 p.m. All classes run Monday through Friday. Special Spanish Movie Nights will be offered every evening from 7-9 p.m.

Students can opt to live in a "Spanish Wing" on residence, and eat lunch and dinner in Spanish at the cafeteria at a reasonable rate.

For an additional price, students will also have the opportunity to participate in weekend excursions to linguistically and culturally relevant locations in the region.

Students should be aware that there are two different Spanish programs offered at ENMU this summer: the one-month Spanish Immersion Program open to all students with SPAN 102 or higher which runs from June 8 to July 3, and the one-week Spanish Immersion Institute which runs from June 14-21, and which is designed to certify bilingual elementary teachers.

Help Save Paper – In alignment with the state’s green initiative plan, ENMU and Core staff would like to do our part to help eliminate waste.  Therefore, beginning this Fall 2009 semester, ENMU will implement a printing quota for all students.  Each student will be allotted 250 pages at the beginning of each semester.  If a student does need additional pages they will be able to purchase 200 sheets for $5.  All the details of how, when, and where to purchase additional sheets have not yet been established.   This initial notice is just to let current students be aware that this change will definitely be taking place upon your return to campus in the Fall.  Students will be receiving additional information in the Fall.

This policy is being put into place for all our printers in the student labs and classrooms in order to eliminate paper waste.  The IT department currently maintains 19 labs, providing printers, maintenance, toner cartridges and paper to each for student use.  We often find stacks of unwanted print jobs that we are hoping can be prevented.  Such things to consider are:  is the print out necessary, can it be printed on both sides, is it edited and correct, is the correct printer selected and are the computer options set for the proper printing that is desired.

Our statistics show that even with the wasteful printing that we currently experience, the average student only prints about 150 pages per semester. Each time a print job is submitted, a window will appear on the desktop on which the student is working. This window will notify the student of how many pages have been printed and how many are left in their quota. We are making every effort to make this transition go as smoothly as possible. We do not want to hinder any student’s ability to print necessary materials in order to advance their academic progress.

Interesting Lab Printing Information during the Fall 2008 Semester:
• The print button was pressed once every two minutes
• An average of 876 reams of paper was used (500 sheets to a ream)
• If the reams of paper were stacked, it would be twice as tall as Lincoln Hall
• Fifty-two trees were consumed (approximately 8,333 pages per tree)
