ENMU to Offer Two Spanish Immersion Programs this Summer

Like 50 American universities, ENMU has cancelled its Spanish Immersion Program in Merida, Mexico this summer.

The Spanish Immersion Program has been relocated from Merida, Mexico, to Portales and will take place at ENMU from June 8 to July 3 during the 1st 4-week summer session.

The Spanish Immersion Program is open to all students who have completed SPAN 102 or its equivalent.

Students who wish to participate fully in the one-month Spanish Immersion Program can take two courses which are available at the both the 200 and 400 level.

Courses available include SPAN 293/405: Grammar Review from 12:40-2:50 p.m. and SPAN 210-410: Spanish Culture from 3-5:10 p.m. All classes run Monday through Friday. Special Spanish Movie Nights will be offered every evening from 7-9 p.m.

Students can opt to live in a "Spanish Wing" on residence, and eat lunch and dinner in Spanish at the cafeteria at a reasonable rate.

For an additional price, students will also have the opportunity to participate in weekend excursions to linguistically and culturally relevant locations in the region.

Students should be aware that there are two different Spanish programs offered at ENMU this summer: the one-month Spanish Immersion Program open to all students with SPAN 102 or higher which runs from June 8 to July 3, and the one-week Spanish Immersion Institute which runs from June 14-21, and which is designed to certify bilingual elementary teachers.

For information on the one-week program for teachers, please contact Geni.Flores@enmu.edu or Jose.Contreras@enmu.edu.

For information on the one-month program for students, please contact John.Morrow@enmu.edu.

Help Save Paper – In alignment with the state’s green initiative plan, ENMU and Core staff would like to do our part to help eliminate waste.  Therefore, beginning this Fall 2009 semester, ENMU will implement a printing quota for all students.  Each student will be allotted 250 pages at the beginning of each semester.  If a student does need additional pages they will be able to purchase 200 sheets for $5.  All the details of how, when, and where to purchase additional sheets have not yet been established.   This initial notice is just to let current students be aware that this change will definitely be taking place upon your return to campus in the Fall.  Students will be receiving additional information in the Fall.

This policy is being put into place for all our printers in the student labs and classrooms in order to eliminate paper waste.  The IT department currently maintains 19 labs, providing printers, maintenance, toner cartridges and paper to each for student use.  We often find stacks of unwanted print jobs that we are hoping can be prevented.  Such things to consider are:  is the print out necessary, can it be printed on both sides, is it edited and correct, is the correct printer selected and are the computer options set for the proper printing that is desired.

Our statistics show that even with the wasteful printing that we currently experience, the average student only prints about 150 pages per semester. Each time a print job is submitted, a window will appear on the desktop on which the student is working. This window will notify the student of how many pages have been printed and how many are left in their quota. We are making every effort to make this transition go as smoothly as possible. We do not want to hinder any student’s ability to print necessary materials in order to advance their academic progress.

Interesting Lab Printing Information during the Fall 2008 Semester:
• The print button was pressed once every two minutes
• An average of 876 reams of paper was used (500 sheets to a ream)
• If the reams of paper were stacked, it would be twice as tall as Lincoln Hall
• Fifty-two trees were consumed (approximately 8,333 pages per tree)

These brothers know their future will be bright in your forever family! Older brother Jericho (left, age 9) is a third grader with a passion for life. An active boy with many interests, he loves outdoor activities such as riding bikes, playing catch, and playing football. He also likes music and dancing and would appreciate parents who are able to help him pursue his interests and talents. A family who has pets would also be a plus, as he is good with animals. He is not a picky eater and especially likes pizza. Younger brother Patrick (right, age 6) is a happy, loving kindergartener with a big heart. He likes to play outside and ride his bike. He loves anything with wheels, especially cars, trucks and motorcycles, and his favorite foods are pizza and spaghetti. Patrick is a social boy who enjoys school, where he has a lot of friends. He receives speech therapy. Both boys benefit from counseling, which may need to continue following placement. Their caseworker prefers a two-parent family; however, all families will be considered. Financial assistance may be available for adoption-related services. For New Mexico children, both homestudied and non-homestudied New Mexico families are encouraged to inquire; only homestudied families from other states should do so. We only accept inquiries on the sibling pair, who will be placed together.
