Helpful Tips for Cleaning Fruits and VegetablesThe following steps are suggested by the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences to clean fruits and vegetables to lessen bacteria (not eliminate) and lessen chemicals from pesticide use:

Method #1

1. Scrub skinned vegetables (ex: potatoes, celery) and rinse thoroughly.

2.  Mix 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar in 1 gallon of water
    Soak fruit or vegetables in the mixture for 5 to 10 minutes; Water should cover the food.
    (For extra clean vegetables, add 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to the vinegar and water mixture)

3.  Rinse again briefly.

Method #2

1.  Scrub skinned vegetables and rinse thoroughly

2.  Mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 gallon of water.  Soak fruit or vegetables in the mixture for 5 to 10 minutes;
     Water should cover the food.

3.  Rinse again briefly.

It is suggested to use this process a short time before preparation to eat in order to preserve nutrients.

My Name is Matthew A.
I am:  10 years old
I am in: 5th grade

Meet Matthew, a boy who has a lot of insight for his age. He is currently in the 5th grade and does best in a learning environment that can provide him individualized attention. Matthew enjoys playing in organized sports such as baseball and basketball. He very much enjoys the "outdoors" and hopes that his family will take him on camping trips. Matthew also enjoys spending time indoors playing board games, video games on the Wii, and learning how to play the acoustic guitar. He enjoys any and all foods. His "red fingers" are indicative of his love for yummy Hot Cheetos.
It is believed that Matthew will thrive in a structured two-parent family, particularly with a strong, positive male influence in his life. Although Matthew is known to do well with children, he is hopeful that he can be the only child.  MH
