Social Work Director Returns to Alma Mater “Oh, I love Eastern; I really do. I have an aunt, uncle, sister and her husband and brother who all graduated from Eastern." – Patricia Saylor
Ms. Saylor is happy to be at Eastern after working over 25 years for the state of New Mexico’s Children Youth and Family Protective Services Department in Clovis. She was ready to retire, but not quite finished working when she heard about the job opening at Eastern. She says it was a good fit. “Oh, I love Eastern; I really do. I have an aunt, uncle, sister and her husband and brother who all graduated from Eastern. This is a special place,” Ms. Saylor said. The social work program, which was recently accredited, is growing, according to Ms. Saylor. “Even students who have not declared a major have dropped by to visit and get information. Some students have looked at changing and I think that shows the program has a good feel to it.” She says her goal is for the students Eastern graduates to obtain the ethics and professionalism needed to succeed in the social work field and be proud of their degree. In addition, she wants the people who hire Eastern students to remember the social work program and think of it as a positive. Having worked in the field gives Ms. Saylor something extra to bring to the classroom. “When you’re doing hands-on work with children and their families, experience is your only teacher. I can bring that to the classroom, along with the written knowledge. It’s a different world working with abused and neglected children and their families, so my experience is very valuable.” Ms. Saylor said she particularly enjoys working with nontraditional students. This is reflective of one of her firm beliefs that, “It’s never too late for anything.” Ms. Saylor enjoys her work, “I work, always have, always will. I don’t know if that makes me a workaholic, but I have passion.” Ms. Saylor also loves fishing, reading and traveling. “I love traveling New Mexico; there is always something to see. It has every season you want and the people are wonderful,” said Ms. Saylor, who also likes spending time with her two dogs. Counseling Instructor Comes from Portales Schools "You have to be conscious of yourself and actions to give the client the opportunity to connect with you.” – Lisa Dykes-Harrell
Prior to taking the position, Ms. Dykes-Harrell was an elementary school counselor for the Portales school system for thirteen years. “I enjoyed what I did in the public schools. The job allowed me to explore new techniques and tools and the staff were supportive and the children were resilient, accepting and eager. This is another step in my life, and not one I expected, but am honored to be here. I believe Dr. Sanders and I work well together. I have also appreciated the support of the faculty in the College of Education and Technology.” Ms. Dykes-Harrell said that she is enjoying working with the college students because they are enthusiastic, involved, and willing to share their own insights, which enriches class content. “My goal is for students to gain an understanding of the background and theories of counseling, and also to become aware of themselves. I like to use real life applications and personal reflection as students learn the groundwork of counseling.” For several years, Ms.Dykes-Harrell has taught play therapy workshops at Eastern, which she routinely used in the Portales schools. Initially, Ms. Dykes-Harrell did not set out to become a counselor. “I originally taught elementary school. I had a class of 36 students, comprised of two grades,” she said. “The more I taught, the more children I saw needed individual personal attention, not just educational attention. You can’t give every child in a class that large what they need, so I decided to become a counselor.” In her spare time, Ms. Dykes-Harrell likes to travel. She spent a year in the Azores, Portugal teaching for the Department of Defense Dependents Schools. She gets pleasure from walking, hiking, biking and dancing. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren (whenever they travel to see them).
Dr. Zhiming Liu, professor of biology at Eastern New Mexico University, has a manuscript accepted for publication in journal of General and Comparative Endocrinology. The title of the paper is “effects of RU 486 on cyclooxygenase-2 gene expression, prostaglandin F2a synthesis and ovulation in Xenopus laevis.” His research team (Dr. Jasvinder K. Dhillon, postdoctoral fellow, and Dr. Xiurong Su, professor from Ningbo University), has found that RU 486, the active ingredient of abortion pills, inhibits ovulation (egg release) in a female amphibian model, Xenopus laevis. The inhibition of ovulation was due to attenuated expression of cyclooxygenase-2 gene and reduced synthesis of a hormone, prostaglandin F2a, in the amphibian ovaries. RU-486 was invented and first used in France and has recently been approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). RU-486 is a steroidal drug that aborts pregnancy during the first trimester by blocking the function of hormone progesterone. The Xenopus laevis is also called South African clawed toad which has been extensively used in the research of reproductive endocrinology and developmental biology. Dr. Liu’s research project has been supported by Grant # P20RR16480 from the National Center for Research Sources (NCRR), a component of the National Institutes of Health, USA, and Eastern New Mexico University Internal Research Grants.

HUMAN RIGHTS FILM SERIES Fall ‘09 A gritty and soulful classic film, PASSIN’ IT ON is…part indictment, part redemption tale, part investigative journalism, part revolutionary manifesto. The film offers startling insights into the role of the Black Panther Party in a social revolution, and the New York Police Department and the FBI’s devious targeting of the Black Panthers and one of the organization’s most fervent leaders--Dhoruba Bin Wahad (born Richard Moore). Emerging from the Bronx ghettoes and a life of petty crime, Dhoruba dived headfirst into the Black Power movement, serving breakfast to school children with one hand while carrying a gun with the other. Amid a national program of FBI-led oppression against and targeting of the Panthers, Dhoruba was framed on flimsy evidence for the wounding and disfigurement of two police officers and sent to prison. After trials and mistrials, incarceration and eventual acquittal 19 years later, a still-impassioned, community organizing and socially committed Dhoruba, his attorneys, and other Panthers finally tell this incredible tale of racism, revolution, injustice, oppression, redemption and ongoing struggle. "A visually compelling film that speaks of a movement, not only a man" (NPR), PASSIN’ IT ON bristles with poetry and the exhilarating recollections of a true American political prisoner and “freedom fighter.” All films FREE, shown in College of Education, Rm. 120 November Campus Construction Schedule – from Hardhat Hound spokesman Steve Collins [schedule] Health Insurance Switch Enrollment— [details] Holiday Payroll Deadlines — [details] Thanksgiving Break Details – ENMU will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday break following the conclusion of all night classes on Tuesday, Nov.24, until 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 30. Brass Choir Performing on November 17
The University Brass Choir of Eastern New Mexico University will perform their annual Brass Choir Concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the First United Methodist Church in Portales. ENMU assistant professor of music Michael Ellzey will conduct. The concert will feature the works of Mozart with “Rondo Alla Turca,” performed by the Clarinet Choir; the Brass Choir will perform Verdi "Grand March" from the Opera Aida, "Funeral March" from Wagner's Opera Gotterdammerung (The Twilight of the Gods), and the "Overture" to Rossini's Barber of Seville; and Ellzey will perform Hummel’s "Trumpet Concerto in E Flat Major." Ellzey chose the pieces because of the operatic emphasis. “I feel it is important to expose our students to music that is outside their norm,” explains Ellzey. The University Brass Choir has rehearsed this performance since the beginning of the semester. Ellzey enjoys the feeling he gets from performing and directing the musical repertoire. “It has always been my goal to share my joy of music making with the rest of the world,” says Ellzey. He thinks the Brass Choir is unique in its performances because “the instrumentation alone is a unique chamber ensemble and offers our students an outlet to perform more challenging music and in an exciting way.” The performance is free and open to the public. For more information, call Kathi Fraze at 562.2377. Theatre Presenting Freshman Showcase, Nov. 18-22
This is to ensure the student is not burned out from the beginning, according to Scarbrough. “These kids work really hard in this building,” says Ms. Scarbrough. “If they get cast in the first show, they would never settle into college life; getting to know their roommate, getting involved in activities…we really want to give them a sense of balance,” explains Ms. Scarbrough. They also realize that students want to be in a show and created the freshman showcase to feature the talents of the new students." This showcase will bring the audience into the classroom of the theater department and feature the student actors and the major tenants and practices of theatre. This performance shows a day in class in a more “tidy fashion,” says Ms. Scarbrough. Even the program is designed to look like the course syllabus. “We decided, ‘Why not show the audience what we do in class?’ explains Dr. Beck. Ms. Scarbrough and Dr. Beck will be among the performers to complete the classroom atmosphere. Among the collage of events are vocal and physical warm-ups, choreography, stage combat, short scenes, auto-drama and “overnight-success,” which is a short script written over-night by the student. Ms. Scarbrough describes an auto-drama as the seven-minute dramatization of the highs and lows of one’s life. “It’s not a narrative like ‘once upon a time, my mother gave me a letter to go to ballet school.’ It’s a little girl running on stage saying ‘It came! It came!’” explains Ms. Scarbrough. Dr. Beck and Ms. Scarbrough are excited about the performance because it is a very informal and light-hearted experience for the audience with interaction and participation. “There will be more serious parts in the first act; the second act is just flat-out nuts,” laughs Ms. Scarbrough. “The audience isn’t going to sit in rapt attention the whole time,” says Dr. Beck. “It’s not the ‘sit in your seat, clap, go home’ kind of show,” says Ms. Scarbrough. “There’s no one story to follow.” “Instead of a story, what you’re going to see are the actors, not the characters,” explains Dr. Beck. “The class is very very jazzed,” says Ms. Scarbrough. “You get to see the actors transition through several different things.” There is no reserve seating. Tickets are $4 per person. For more information, contact Shirlene Peters at 575.562.2711.
