Dr. Manuel Varela, professor of biology, and personnel from his research laboratory have had a paper accepted for publication by the editor of the refereed scientific journal “World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology.” The title of the new work is "Elucidation of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiles and Genotyping of Salmonella enterica Isolates from Clinical Cases of Salmonellosis in New Mexico in 2008." Co-authors include K.P. Smith (ENMU graduate student), Jeffy George (collaborator, College of Fisheries, Mangalore, India), Kathy Cadle (ENMU undergraduate), Dr. Sanath Kumar (ENMU postdoctoral fellow), Steve Aragon (ENMU undergraduate), Ricardo Hernandez (ENMU graduate student), Suzy Jones (ENMU alumnus, M.S., ‘09), and Jody Floyd (ENMU graduate student). Dr. Amy C. Hazelrigg, Curriculum and Instruction, recently gave a presentation on reading strategy instruction at the annual conference of the New Mexico Council of Teachers of English and a presentation on the language of science at the yearly meeting of the New Mexico Adult Education Association. The 27th Anniversary Issue of MÖBIUS—The Poetry Magazine (Flushing, New York), Fall 2009, contains two poems by Antony Oldknow, Languages and Literature: “Clown King” p. 29, and “Artists” p.45. The texts of the two poems follow: CLOWN KING Some paintings of Napoleon show him as a clown, Napoleon’s dancing men and maidens shot ARTISTS Busy carrying his equipment down the lane Victory for Vic and Tory! ENMU’s live Greyhound mascots will go by the names Vic and Tory. The names, chosen from a list of more than 200, were submitted by both Kaitlin Tidwell and Haley LaRue. The Greyhound committee narrowed the submissions to five pairs, which were voted on with cash donations.
Peace Corps Here on December 1 – The United States Peace Corps will have a representative in the Campus Student Union on Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please stop by for current information or to ask questions. Deadline for Support Senate Door Decorating Contest is December 4 – The Support Senate is sponsoring their annual "Holiday Door Decorating Contest." The deadline to register is Dec. 4. Doors have to be decorated by Dec. 8. Judging is on Dec. 10, with winners announced that day. Get into the holiday spirit by decorating your window or door. The cost is $3 per department. You can use all adjoining windows and doors to decorate with one continuous theme. The winner gets the pot. All registration forms and fees are to be sent to station 34. University Smoking Policy to be Discussed November 30 – As the result of campus discussions and concerns, some revisions to the University's smoking policy have been proposed. These revisions will be discussed at the Monday, Nov. 30 meeting of University Council. To review the proposed changes [click here]. The proposed changes appear in red. Send any concerns or comments to your constituency president or to Patrice.Caldwell@enmu.edu for the Council's consideration. Details on Proposed Smoking Areas – The University is seeking input from the campus as to the locations of smoking areas within the main area of the campus. Smoking areas near the student residence halls are being developed separately from the main campus area. Please review the maps located at the areas listed below and provide your comments to Scott Smart at scott.smart@enmu.edu or call him at 2611. We have taken advantage of several existing sites. Site # 1 located on the east side of Golden Library (at the circulation counter) Once construction of the Technology building is complete we will add a site in this area. These sites are being designated in order to comply with the new smoking policy that is being developed for the campus. You can review this policy on the university's intranet site Inside ENMU. Commencement Reception on December 12 – The Commencement Reception to honor the fall 2009 graduation candidates will be Saturday, Dec. 12 immediately following graduation. The reception will be in the Greyhound Arena south gym. Families, friends, faculty and staff are invited. The reception is sponsored by the ENMU Alumni Association and Academic Affairs. President's Holiday Reception on December 9 – The President's Holiday Reception for employees and retirees will be from 9-11 a.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Videos should be no longer than 30 seconds with an ENMU connection. Prizes of $100, $50 and $25 gift certificates to the Campus Bookstore will be awarded for the top three videos. The deadline is Dec. 1, 2009. Education Hosting Film Series Celebrating ENMU's 75th The series offers films that deal with education as depicted by Hollywood during the last eight decades. There will be a viewing of the selected film and discussion. The first film, shown on Oct. 15, was "The Great Debaters" and represented the decades of the 1930s-40s. All movies are shown the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in ED 120. Popcorn will be served. Bring friends and join them for these free movies. ENMU Hosting Holiday Concert on Friday, December 4 Eastern New Mexico University in Portales will host its annual Holiday Concert at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4 at the University Theatre’s Mainstage. The concert features the University Singers and the Chamber Singers, conducted by Jason Paulk and accompanied by Kayla Paulk, and the Symphonic Band, directed by Dustin Seifert and Neil Rutland. The Symphonic Band will perform “Ding Dong Merrily on High,” conducted by Neil Rutland; “Greensleeves,” arranged by Alfred Reed; “The Nutcracker Suite,” composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; and “Sleigh Ride,” composed by Leroy Anderson. ENMU Hosting ‘Acts of Volition’ Art Show Eastern will host the art show “Acts of Volition” in Golden Library’s Runnels Gallery from Monday, Nov. 30 through Thursday, Dec. 3. A closing reception will be from 5-7 p.m. on Dec. 3. The themed show, according to Christopher Calderón, Runnels Gallery manager, is how we use art to cope. “What is a ‘problem,’ what is ‘personal experience,’ and how do we use art to express this?” asks Calderón. Nine student artists will display at least two pieces and one artist will create his own artistic “environment” in a section of the room. The 25 pieces and one “environment” round out the collection of paintings and mixed-media projects. The participating artists are Matthew L. Beard, Timothy N. Bomar, Lenore D. Dunn, Christopher R. Jaynes, Kary L. Mathys, Elijah R. Nieto, Elizabeth A. Stoliker, Nancy L. Werner and Amanda M. Zopfi. The exhibit is free and open to the public, and will be open during regular hours (562.2624). Digital Art and Sculpture to be Displayed at ENMU Eastern New Mexico University student Lamar (Mo) Barnes will display his bachelor’s of fine arts showcase, along with Diana Cole’s artwork, in Golden Library’s Runnels Gallery from Monday, Dec.7 through Thursday, Dec. 10. A closing reception will be held on the last day of the show from 5-7 p.m. Barnes, an animation student, will show his digital art created in programs such as Maya, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. He is showcasing his artwork as part of the graduation requirement for a bachelor’s of fine arts degree. Cole is a new adjunct faculty member for fine arts teaching Visual Concepts 1 and the drawing section Materials 1 in addition to being the Theatre Department's new Costume Designer. According to Runnels Gallery manager Christopher Calderón, she will be showing drawings and small sculptures that work with the relationship between words and psychology. Calderón says that Cole’s artwork challenges our traditional concepts of sculpture and drawing. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Bush approved designating November 1990 as "Native American Heritage Month" as a month of recognition for the significant contributions of the Native people. Nov. 30: Bachata/Salsa Workshop: Hispanic Affairs will present a Bachata/Salsa dance workshop on Monday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. in the CUB Ballroom.
