New President of ENMU-Ruidoso Named
Dr. Clayton Alred

Dr. Clayton Alred, vice president for instruction at Odessa College, has been named president of the Ruidoso campus of Eastern New Mexico University, according to Dr. Steven Gamble, president of the ENMU system.  He will begin his new position in late November or early December.

“We are fortunate to attract someone the caliber of Dr. Alred,” Dr. Gamble said.  “He has an excellent background in the mission of a community college, and has been very successful in moving Odessa College forward.  While I regret that Dr. Michael Elrod is retiring as president of ENMU-Ruidoso, Dr. Alred is a worthy successor.”

Previous to his present position, Dr. Alred served Odessa College as interim president (2006-07), dean of institutional research and effectiveness (1996-2002), dean of humanities and communications (1995-96), dean of learning resources (1993-94), associate dean of learning

resources (1990-93), and director of developmental studies and instructional television (1986-90).

“I am really excited about the opportunities for new programs at ENMU-Ruidoso, as well as the possibility of a new campus,” said Dr. Alred.  “During my visit I observed that they have a very cohesive staff, which is a genuine strength.  The campus offers comprehensive programs to the citizens of the Ruidoso area, and the community is very responsive…I’m really enjoying this feeling of euphoria.”

Dr. Alred has a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin, a master’s in educational administration from Sul Ross State University, and a bachelor’s in biology and chemistry from Angelo State University.

His many professional memberships and honors include the 2007 Phi Theta Kappa International Distinguished Administrator Award, 2006 El Animo Award—Hispanic Heritage of Odessa, National Council of Instructional Administrators, Society of College and University Planners, and president of the Texas Consortium for Educational Telecommunications.  He has also published articles in academic journals, and earned several professional certificates in education.

ENMU Pledges Over $15,000 to United Way – As of Oct. 8, ENMU faculty and staff had pledged $15,020 to community projects supported by United Way.  If you have already pledged (over 18 percent of Eastern's employees have), thank you. If you have not already done so, I hope you will consider giving back to your community with a one-time pledge or payroll deduction to United Way.

You can stipulate the charity to receive your donation or simply give the money to United Way to distribute. Pledge cards are available from Patrice Caldwell (562.2315) or Elwyn Hulett (562.2266).  Call or e-mail them if you have any questions.

ENMU was the flagship donor in Roosevelt County last year, and ENMU has always been a major supporter of Portales and our region. I hope your generosity will help us reach our University goal of $20,000 and our larger goal of giving back to our community.

Thanks.

Steve Gamble
President

Student Organizations Honoring ENMU's 75th with 75 Projects
by Jessica Eden
Communication Services

In honor of Eastern New Mexico University 75th anniversary; Tracy Henderson, director of Student Activities and Organizations, was looking for a way that student organizations could get together to perform something unique for the community and came up with the “75 Student Service Projects.”

The service projects began July 1 and will continue through June 30, 2010.  This program will target the Portales area in an effort to give back to the community in helpful ways, such as trash pickups, canned food drives and the Kappa Sigma Run.

“This is a great way for the students to give back to the community, and for the students to see how their creativeness helped reach the bigger picture,” said Ms. Henderson.  “Once they get in the mindset that they can complete 75 service projects, they can carry that ability to the future.”

To see what services have been completed, there will be a running tally posted at www.enmu.edu/sao, along with the Community Service Forms.

For more information, contact Tracy Henderson at 575.562.4321.
