Greyhound Mascots Selected
by Janice Morrow
Communication Services

Eastern New Mexico University has been given the exciting opportunity to adopt two former racing greyhounds.  These two hounds come to us through the New Mexico Greyhound Connection (NMGC) via the Greyhound Pets of America—Arizona Chapter (GPA-AZ). Both are tax exempt 501(c)3 organizations dedicated to the placement of ex-racing greyhounds in ideal situations.

Together, NMGC and GPA-AZ, along with the ENMU greyhound committee, have selected a male and female greyhound which will be cared for by the ENMU Pre-Vet Club and the ENMU Department of Agriculture and handled by a select group of six Hound Handlers under the direction of Dr. Darron Smith, associate professor of agriculture and technology.

ENMU followed the same guidelines for adoption as any other adoptive person or family to insure proper care and handling of the dogs.  The dogs will live on-campus and will be well-loved, walked several times a day and will have a regular training schedule.

Dr. Smith brings his expertise in animal welfare and behavior to the program.  He expects the greyhound mascot program to be top-notch with above-board management and handling.  The program is also fortunate to have the support of Ms. Ronnie Birdsong, ENMU vice president for University Relations, who is a long-time placement representative for the Yorkshire Terrier rescue program.

ENMU joins several other colleges and universities across the country in the tradition of owning live mascots, including Georgetown University (Jack) , University of Texas (Bevo), West Texas A&M (Thunder)  and Loyola College in Maryland whose mascot is also a greyhound.

ENMU’s adoptees:
Male:  75 pounds, 2 years old and brindle in color.  He was not interested in chasing the lure around the track; therefore, he is a “retired” racing dog.  He is happy around groups of people and wants to visit with anyone who will give him attention.

Female:  65 pounds, 4 years old and black with a white chest in color.  She is very outgoing and loves people.

Name Suggestions Being Accepted for Greyhound Mascots

Eastern New Mexico University is adopting two rescued former racing Greyhound dogs, from the New Mexico Greyhound Connection, as its official animal mascots.

From Oct. 23-Nov. 13 applications will be accepted from ENMU juniors and seniors to be their official handlers.  The six chosen students, who must have 3.0 grade point averages, will receive stipends.  Applications can be picked up in Room 108 of the ENMU Administration Building beginning Friday, Oct. 23.

ENMU is also accepting name suggestions for the male and female dogs from the public from Oct. 23 through Nov. 6, and donation voting will be from Nov. 6 through Dec. 11 at $1 per vote.  Once a committee accepts the top three e suggestions for each dog, the winning names will be determined by which receive the most donations for the dogs’ upkeep.

Submit entries to greyhound@enmu.edu or at www.enmu.edu

For more information, call Janice Morrow at 575.562.2133.

Ninth Annual Blackwater Draw Atlatl Throw on October 31

Eastern New Mexico University's Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology, Blackwater Draw Archaeological Site and Mu Alpha Nu Anthropology Club are sponsoring the Ninth Annual Blackwater Draw Atlatl Throw on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Blackwater Draw Site (located along State Highway 467 on the way to Cannon Air Force Base, about six miles north of Portales and one mile north of the turn to Oasis State Park).

ENMU Fall Choral Concert Set for October 29
by Robin Haislett
ENMU Communication Services

Eastern New Mexico University’s Fall Choral Concert is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 at the University Theatre Center’s Mainstage in Portales.  ENMU music professor Jason Paulk is directing and his wife and ENMU music instructor Kayla Paulk will accompany from the piano. Instrumentalists who will assist include ENMU music professors Tracy Carr, oboist, and Chris Beaty, saxophonist. Two student conductors, Janice Pacheco and Derek Gilmour, will make their conducting debut.

The Chamber Singers and University Singers will perform several unaccompanied pieces from the repertoire in their upcoming spring European Choir Tour, including venues in Salzburg, Vienna and Prague. The performers have been practicing since the beginning of the semester.

Chamber Singers will perform four songs by Cecil Effinger, “Ubi Caritas” by Maurice Duruflé, conducted by Pacheco and partial songs by Gerald Finzi. University Singers will perform three songs by Charles Villiers Stanford, including a double choir piece, “Coelos ascendit hodie,” and a double choir anthem by Charles Wood. The choirs will also perform “Deep River,” arranged by Anders Paulsson, “Sing a Mighty Song,” “Ye Followers of the Lamb,” and “God Be in my Head,” and “Wondrous Love,” conducted by Gilmour.

The musical pieces are chosen by Paulk according to what he feels will challenge and help the students’ vocal development. According to Paulk, “This includes many hours of preparation and searching on my part to determine what is accessible, yet challenging enough to continually move us toward a deeper level of music making.” He also explains that most academic courses’ curriculum remains the same year to year, but performance courses must constantly adapt to the changing needs of the ensemble membership. “In five years, we have not repeated a single piece of repertoire. And I could choose not to repeat a single piece in the next thirty years and still just scratch the surface of great choral music,” says Paulk.

The Fall Choral Concert will be an exciting experience for the audience, according to Paulk. “The program will begin with a double choir motet, with one ensemble on stage and the other in the audience.  It should provide for an interesting sonic experience.” says Paulk.

Paulk says, “We have a cultured audience in Portales and I think they will appreciate the many hours of preparation that went into this concert.”

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Kathi Fraze at 575.562.2237.
