Professor Says Working at Eastern a ‘Dream Come True’
photo and story by Erin Griffith
Communication Services
Jennifer Laubenthal

Jennifer Laubenthal, a new assistant professor of music at Eastern New Mexico University, is excited to be teaching clarinet full-time.

Originally from northwest Ohio, Dr. Laubenthal recently finished her master’s and doctoral degrees at The Ohio State University.

“When this job opened, I applied right away. I really liked the idea of a small campus for my first job; it gives me a chance to get my feet wet. I like it more and more as I get to know everyone. New Mexicans are very friendly,” she said.

Dr. Laubenthal started band in fifth grade and by eighth grade, she knew she wanted to “make music her life.”

“This is exactly my dream job. I’ve wanted to teach applied clarinet for practically my whole life.”

Along with clarinet, she is teaching music appreciation and music reading.

The climate change from Ohio to New Mexico has caused a bit of havoc for her.

“I’m getting used to the temperature and the dryness. I’ve been using more chapstick, but the biggest problem has been with my reeds,” said Dr. Laubenthal, who along with the dryness has been getting used to new varieties of bugs.

Dr. Laubenthal enjoys being outdoors, reading and spending time with her husband and dog, Maggie.

Though this is her first job as a full-time teacher, Dr. Laubenthal says the transition from student to teacher has been easy.

“It’s been a natural transition to go from school to teaching. What I did for my graduate work is very similar to what I do here, so I felt very prepared.”

Dr. Laubenthal’s biggest message to her students is to follow their dreams.

Student Organizations Honoring ENMU's 75th with 75 Projects
by Jessica Eden
Communication Services

In honor of Eastern New Mexico University 75th anniversary; Tracy Henderson, director of Student Activities and Organizations, was looking for a way that student organizations could get together to perform something unique for the community and came up with the “75 Student Service Projects.”

The service projects began July 1 and will continue through June 30, 2010.  This program will target the Portales area in an effort to give back to the community in helpful ways, such as trash pickups, canned food drives and the Kappa Sigma Run.

“This is a great way for the students to give back to the community, and for the students to see how their creativeness helped reach the bigger picture,” said Ms. Henderson.  “Once they get in the mindset that they can complete 75 service projects, they can carry that ability to the future.”

To see what services have been completed, there will be a running tally posted at www.enmu.edu/sao, along with the Community Service Forms.

For more information, contact Tracy Henderson at 575.562.4321.
