Announcements Dr. Jordan I. Kobritz, assistant professor of sport management, was interviewed on the nationally syndicated "Papa Joe Chevalier" radio show on Tuesday, Sept. 15, on an article he wrote on Caster Semenya, the 18-year- old South African track star who won the women's 800-meter race at the world championships in Berlin last month and then underwent gender testing. The interview can be heard at http://www.papajoetalk.com. Dr. Mary Arth Daughrity and Mrs. Caron Powers received word recently that their article titled "A Teacher Partnership Focuses on Assessment and Affects Math Mates Instruction in a Professional Development School" will be published in the national magazine "PDS Partners" in 2010. Dr. Daughrity, an Associate Professor in the College of Education & Technology, and Mrs. Powers, a second grade teacher at James Elementary PDS, are just one example of how the two faculties work together in the PDS setting. The PDS partnership between the two schools continues into its 14th year. The magazine Abbey (Columbia, Maryland) #119 (September 2009) includes on p. 16 the poem “Man on a Barge” by Antony Oldknow, Languages and Literature. ENMU/CCC Secure Major Title V Grant Clovis Community College and Eastern New Mexico University have received formal notification that their cooperative grant “Academic Preparedness for Educational and Career Success” has been funded for just under $3.5M by the US Department of Education. The grant begins Oct. 1, 2009, and ends Sept. 30, 2014. Only Hispanic –serving institutions are eligible for these highly competitive grants. Successful cooperative grants must propose innovative, highly collaborative projects, from partnering institutions with strong track records for helping students succeed. While CCC and ENMU could have submitted individual or stand-alone grant applications, they chose to partner — obviously a successful strategy in this hotly contested competition. From New Mexico alone, 14 grants were submitted for funding, with well over 100 nationwide. The grant’s goals are two-fold. First, the institutions will work to enhance students’ success in developmental courses that prepare students for college-level academic work Second, the grant will work to strengthen the nursing “pipeline,” helping to prepare nursing candidates for their programs at CCC and then to increase the number of nurses who continue their education with a BSN at ENMU. Both institutions also built a scholarship fund into their proposal that will assist CCC and ENMU students in continuing their education. Grant reviewers awarded high points for the collaborators’ long-standing institutional partnerships and their grasp of the issues to be addressed. Evaluators commented on the high probability of the grant’s success given the two institutions’ knowledge of each other, their preparation, and their commitment to students. As the lead institution, ENMU will receive a slightly larger portion of the funds to cover project evaluation and grant administration costs, as well as grant activities. CCC receives approximately $292,000 each of five years for its grant activities and will lead the nursing pipeline activity. This is the second Title V cooperative grant that ENMU and CCC have secured. Another cooperative grant awarded in 2001 successfully addressed new technologies of distance education, diversity awareness on both campuses, and created support systems for students seeking careers in teaching. The institutions began discussing another collaboration over a year ago. Lead grant writer Dr. David Caffey at CCC accomplished most of the grant writing in less than one month, with input from ENMU collaborator Dr. Patrice Caldwell. Faculty Saxophone Recital at ENMU Set for September 25 Eastern New Mexico University’s Christopher Beaty, associate professor of music and director of the jazz studies program, will perform a saxophone faculty recital at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, at the First United Methodist Church in Portales. Beaty will give a repeat performance of the concert at 7:30 p.m. (CST) on Monday, Sept. 28, at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. Kayla Paulk will accompany Beaty on piano and Jennifer Laubenthal will lend her talents on clarinet in her first public performance, according to Beaty. Though Beaty is known for his jazz interests, he is playing the repertoire of three American and one Australian composers. “With the saxophone being associated with jazz a lot, you get a lot of jazz influenced pieces in the classical saxophone repertoire but none of these were directly influenced by jazz” says Beaty. He will perform “Sonata” by Paul Creston, “Sonata” by Robert Muczynski, “KuKu” by Barry Cockcroft and “Mood Music 2” by Glenn Smith. “This is all music from the 20th century. I’m playing music from 1935 on up to 1997,” says Beaty. Creston’s “Sonata” was chosen because many of Beaty’s saxophone majors may include it in their standard repertoire studies while majoring in saxophone at ENMU. It is also one of the most popular pieces written for saxophone. Playing the piece “KuKu,” which in Swahili is “chicken,” is a new experience for Beaty who has never played an Australian composer’s piece before. “It’s unaccompanied so you have to be a ‘one-man band.’ It’s really modern and kind of humorous since the back half of it is meant to sound like a chicken,” says Beaty. Instead of an intermission, Beaty’s 11-year-old daughter, Emma, will perform a violin piece with Paulk’s accompaniment. “She’s [Emma] a pretty advanced Suzuki violinist, taught by her mother since she was two,” he says. Beaty’s wife, Eileen McNaughton, has been teaching the Suzuki violin method for over 20 years. The performance is free and open to the public. Holder, a recent ENMU graduate, has a master of arts in English and is currently teaching as temporary faculty in the languages and literature department. The two senior theatre majors wrote the pieces as part of their senior recital and are being awarded a grade on the script, the writing and rewriting process, their attendance at all the rehearsals and revisions made based on how the actors treated the material and their discussions with Holder and faculty mentors. "Bridges" is about Mike and Lainee, a couple dealing with several stresses on their marriage, including economic hardships and infertility. During an argument, Mike and Lainee also explore their expectations of one another and how to cope with a loss of passion during hard times. Tickets are $4 each and can be purchased at the door or in advance. For more information, call Shirlene Peters at 575.562.2711 or University Theatre Center box office at 575.562.2710.
