Fractions: Step by Step is a complete electronic math course published by Core Learning, and part of Core’s Math Course Series. It is divided into seven units with thirty learning objectives spread across the units. The units cover factors and multiples, fraction concepts, estimation of fractions, addition and subtraction of fractions, multiplication with fractions, division with fractions, and working with fractions.
The program installs easily. Either pick the install option from autorun, or open the drive the disc is in through My Computer, and double click the setup option. There is no manual, although there are installation instructions inside the cover of the case, which are easy to follow. The computer novice should not have an issue with installing this program.
This program accomplishes its educational goals through narrating over 170 screens of instruction. The software is fairly interactive. The main interactivity comes from the quizzes after each lesson, the unit tests, the over 200 printable practice sheets, and from changing pages during the narrated instruction. The quizzes and tests are graded giving feedback. At the end of the course there is a completion certificate that can be printed. The age groups that are appropriate for using this software are grades three to five for enrichment, grades five to six as the target age group, and grades six and up for remedial study. Fractions: Step by Step is a solid electronic fractions course, that should lend itself to those students who do not understand fractions, are ignorant of them, or are in need of a quick review.
For assistance, contact Tyson Brown at 562.2646 or visit him at Room 146 in Golden Library.
