This summer, students from multiple ENMU campuses are participating in a Spanish language immersion trip to Guatemala. Seventeen people went on the trip, which began on July 3 and will end on July 28, in time for students to get back for the fall semester.

According to participant Mackenzie Morris, a pre-physical therapy major/Spanish minor, the school participates in many of these types of language immersion programs. This year Guatemala was chosen due to lack of  regular tourism, which has led to English being one of the lesser common of the over 24 languages spoken throughout the country.

“I went on this trip because I wanted to be immersed in the language, to learn Spanish,” said Morris.

While the main focus of the trip is for students to have a chance to practice and put to the test their Spanish language skills, they have also been provided a chance to learn about the people and the history of the country.

“We are learning about culture in Guatemala and about the Mayans. They practice very traditional things and the people cherish their land. They grow crops and sell them for only a little bit of money; it is not a wealthy country at all,” said Morris.

“The biggest difference between Guatemala. and the United States is the money. They are really poor here; one example is you can’t flush toilet paper because the plumbing is too poor. I would recommend someone come here because it’s a humbling experience and at the same time by far the most beautiful place in the world I have ever been to,” added Morris.

Morris also said the students have had fun learning about another culture and their Mayan ancestry, which she has found interesting because of its extensive and significant historical background.

“We are learning a lot and having a wonderful experience. It’s the experience of a lifetime, and I feel really blessed to be able to learn how others live. It makes me appreciate my own home country even more,” concluded Morris, as she departed from the Skype interview to play soccer in the beautiful Guatemalan countryside.

The immersion trip cost $1,500 (not including tuition and fees) and included room, meals, travel and three tour excursions. Students will be earn up to six credit hours for: SPAN 210, 212, 410 or 412.

Eastern New Mexico University senior Cassandra Jones is busy adjusting to life in Santa Fe – her new home for six months. Jones has earned an internship position, one of only three, in the New Mexico legislature.

The Lovington native is a pursuing a double major in psychology and political science. After taking an introductory course in political science, the psychology major found another path. “I continued to take classes in the subject, intending them to be electives.  After my fourth semester I realized that my passion for the subject was too great for me to not pursue it for my education and career,” says Jones.

Dr. Sue Strickler, professor of political science, shared the internship opportunity with her students since the students who are awarded the position are assigned to Legislative Council Service, the Legislative Education Study Committee or the Legislative Finance Committee. Each of the New Mexico four-year universities nominate two students, totaling twelve cadidates, to be interviewed and selected to fill one of the three positions.

 “I did not need much encouragement to apply for the internship, but I received it nonetheless,” says Jones. Much of the support came from her family, professors and employers at Landall’s Box Office, Peggy and ENMU alumnus Landall Goolsby.

“This internship is an awesome opportunity for any student, and especially for those interested in becoming involved in politics. The experience gained from this position could be invaluable to my future,” says Jones.

Included in the job description on the application: “Interns will provide staff support to interim legislative committees that study various public policies.” The interns may work on speechwriting, analysis of budgets, organization of committees, issue analysis and legal and policy research. Jones will also participate in the special session in September.

Jones is anticipating the challenge of applying the theory she’s learned in class to practical use, but is confident that her work and education will be a great help. “This internship will give me the opportunity to expand my knowledge of our state’s politics as well as experience that I am sure will be essential to my future,” says Jones.

She credits ENMU for helping her develop interview skills and the professors at ENMU for teaching her to “to embrace opportunities even if they are unexpected.” Jones credits Dr. Daniel Acheson-Brown for inspiring her to pursue political science through his introductory course and Dr. Strickler for being “absolutely indispensable to my education,” and using her enthusiasm and creative teaching techniques to inspire her students.

Van of Enchantment at Blackwater Draw Site on July 30-31
	Eastern New Mexico University's Blackwater Draw Archaeological site will host the Museum of New Mexico's Van of Enchantment from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, July 30-31.  The Van is free with admission to the site.Admission prices to the site are $3 for general admission, $2 for seniors and students, and $1 for 15 and under.  The Blackwater Draw site is six miles north of Portales on Highway 467 (one mile north of Oasis State Park).
The Van of Enchantment traces the construction, rise, and decline of Route 66 through New Mexico from its inception in 1926 until it was decommissioned in 1985.  Using the town of Santa Rosa, N.M., as a case study, the exhibit demonstrates the impact and importance of Route 66 on the day to day lives of New Mexicans. Traveling across the state, the Van of Enchantment brings Route 66 to the public with a highly interactive, hands-on exhibit designed to elicit memories, encourage reminiscing, and impart new information about one of the most unique, well-loved highways in the United States." Dawn Wolf-Taylor is the new coordinator of Alumni Affairs.  She began on July 14. Dawn was chosen from a competitive search of approximately 70 applicants.

ENMU grad Todd VanPool, associate professor of anthropology at University of Missouri-Columbia, will speak on War, Women, and Religion:The Spread of Salado Polychrome in the North Am erican Southwest on July 23 at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology.

During the 13th and 14th centuries, the Salado religion spread across the U.S. Southwest. It was associated with distinctive pottery, also found in El Paso, which was part of a new religious system developed during massive migration into the area. Many of the immigrants were female war refugees and their children fleeing intense violence to the north. The influx of refugees into pre-existing communities created intense competition among females for economic resources and mates. In this presentation, Dr VanPool suggests that the Salado religion reflects religious innovation by females aimed at mitigating this conflict.

Todd L. VanPool is an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Missouri--Columbia. He earned his BA at Eastern New Mexico University and his Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. He has conducted archaeological field work throughout New Mexico and northern Chihuahua, and is currently leading the excavation of the 76 Draw site near Deming with his colleagues, Christine S. VanPool and Gordon F.M. Rakita.

Defensive Driving on July 25 – In order to drive a University vehicle or an Enterprise vehicle for the University, the State of New Mexico requires you to have completed the six-hour National Safety Council Defensive Driving Certificate program.

Don't Get Hooked by Phishing Attempts – Phishing emails are those in which an illegitimate source attempts to obtain personal information, such as usernames or passwords, by misrepresenting themselves. One of the most common attacks affecting ENMU staff and faculty are emails claiming to be from an ENMU System Administrator warning that your email inbox has exceeded its limits and must be re-validated.  In order to protect yourself from such an intrusion please remember the following:

1)      ENMU Information Technology Services will never ask for your username or password by email nor will ITS call you for this information.  However, if you call ITS for help, IT staff may ask for your password to test your account.  You may choose not to provide the information.

2)      The email that ITS sends out if your staff or faculty email account is approaching its limits does not have any attachments or links to web pages, it merely  ask you to reduce your mailbox size and empty your deleted folder.

3)      If you are unsure if an email is legitimate or not, you can call the Helpdesk or forward the email to the Helpdesk and we will let you know.

Other common attacks claim to be from Amazon.com, PayPal, Facebook, a bank asking for personal information, or even a request to update your email profile.  If you are unsure of the email's validity; rather than providing account information by email or clicking on a web site link embedded in the email (which may lead to a fake site set up to look like the real site):

1)      If you are unsure of the validity of the email, do not click on email web site link.

2)      Open a web browser and log into the site directly (rather than clicking on an email link) to see if any action needs to be taken.
