Meet Julie Gawehn: New Human Resources Director

Editor's Note: Julie Gawehn is the new director of Human Resources. Her first day on the job was Aug. 1, but she previously worked at ENMU from 1995-1998 as Department Secretary and Records Clerk in the College of Business.

Q. What are the main duties of your job?

To provide leadership to the University in all areas of human resources and directs all aspect of the Human Resources functions for the University including compensation, staffing, classifications, payroll, employee relations, training and development, reporting and records and ensure those functions are aligned with the mission and goals of the University.

Q. What have you enjoyed most about your job, and what have been the biggest challenges (so far)?

The people at ENMU are wonderful. They have been very welcoming and helpful.The biggest challenge to date is getting familiar with ENMU policies, procedures, plans, etc., and remembering everyone's names.

Q. What were you doing before you came to ENMU, and what other jobs have you held?

I have worked in Human Resources and Practice Administration in the Healthcare Industry for the past 11 years. My most recent position was as the HR Director at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis. I have also worked in the pharmaceuticals industry as well as the legal and environmental testing environments.

Q. What are your degrees and majors?

I have an associates of science degree in general studies from Eastern New Mexico University (1998), bachelors of business administration with dual major of human resources management and business administration from Eastern New Mexico University (2000), and masters of arts in management with an emphasis in human resource management from Wayland Baptist University (2004).

Professional Certification includes Professional in Human Resources (Nationally recognized certification for those in the HR field).

Q. Where were you born, raised, and what was your life like growing up?

I was born in Southern California and lived there for the first nine years of my life,then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, for 12 years where I graduated from hgh school. I then moved to Phoenix, Ariz., when I was 20.

I have three brothers so I grew up being pretty tough, but always willing to try new things (kind of had to as the motto was literally sink or swim with three brothers). I grew up in a single-parent household so I learned the ethic of hard work at a very young age. I was the first in my family to graduate from a university.

Q. Tell us about your own family?

I met and married my wonderful husband, Ralph, in Phoenix, Ariz., when he was active duty at Luke Air Force Base. He was transferred to Cannon Air Force Base in August 1995. I have two daughters who keep me extremely busy: Amanda who is 13 and Sarah who is 10.

My husband retired from the Air Force after 22 years and is now in his second career of teaching history to students at Elida High School. My daughters also attend school in Elida.

Q. What are your hobbies?

Ballroom dancing, Zumba, gardening, reading and spending time with my family and friends.

Q. What is your ultimate career goal?

To know I've made a difference in a positive way and to be respected by those in my field and those I work with.

Q. What gives your life meaning. Besides career goals, what else do you hope to accomplish?

Knowing that God is always beside you and that he would never give you anything that you can't handle. What I hope to accomplish in life is to set a good example for my daughters that they can grow up to embrace and appreciate all that life has to give them and to be the best wife and mother I can be.

Q. What is your general impression of Portales, and ENMU?

Having lived in Portales since 1995, I have come to love the community and the friendliness of everyone encountered.

Q. Other thoughts?

I am always here to assist anyone in any way I possibly can. Please don't hesitate to contact me.

$36 million worth of improvements are underway on campus – including the yet-to-be-started new residence hall going up where Lincoln Hall was torn down.

As he tries to get to his office, math professor Brian Pasko can't figure out what happened over the summer. "It just doesn't add up," he said.

Bonnie Sink of Information Technology Services heard a rumor that ENMU was trying to become the Venice of the Southwest. "I know that hitting buried water pipes helps, but I'm still not sure that we get enough rain to fill our new canals," she worried.

Monday Memo Editor Recruited by Baylor Coaches

While recently visiting Baylor University in Waco, Texas, the Baylor soccer coach spotted Monday Memo editor Wendel Soan kicking a ball around on their indoor football/soccer practice facility and asked if he had any eligibility left.

Then the Baylor football coach spotted Sloan effortlessly manhandling a blocking sled on the outdoor football practice field and also offered him a scholarship.

The coaches then wined and dined Sloan that night at Buzard Billy's on the Brazos River in Waco – each trying to persuade him to play for their team.

However, after discovering that Sloan was neither a Baptist nor an especially good swimmer, both coaches quickly withdrew their offers.

Governor Susana Martinez has appointed am ENMU grad to the New Mexico Economic Partnership.

Gary Tonjes of Albuquerque is the president of Albuquerque Economic Development Incorporated, a post
he has held since 1994. He has previously worked for the Roswell Chamber of Commerce; the Odessa
(Texas) Chamber of Commerce; and was the Jopin (Missouri) Area Chamber of Commerce president for more
than 10 years.

Tonjes holds a B.S. in Communications from Eastern New Mexico University.

Help 'Stuff the Bus'

Local schoolchildren need “stuff” for school. Please help United Way “Stuff the Bus” on Aug. 20 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Portales Walmart. If you prefer, you can bring your donations to ENMU’s Information Desk (front door of the Administration Building) and campus volunteers will deliver them for you.

Children need new school supplies such as pencils, tablets, rulers, scissors and crayons. When you donate, you can register a deserving 5th to 12th grader to win a desktop computer. If you would prefer to contribute money to this drive, make checks payable to “United Way of Eastern New Mexico” and annotate the check for “Roosevelt County Stuff the Bus.”

Volunteers are always needed, especially on the drop-off day, Aug. 20.

If you can help, call the United Way hotline, 2-1-1, to volunteer.

United Way Campaign Kicks Off August 17

Eastern New Mexico University’s United Way campaign kicks off at the annual faculty/staff breakfast on Wednesday, Aug. 17th. Erinn Burch, United Way of Eastern New Mexico executive director, will speak briefly, and campus volunteers will distribute pledge cards.

ENMU’s goal this year is $20,000. United Way donations may be earmarked for any non-profit charity, or for the general United Way fund.

The campus will receive regular updates on progress toward our goal.

ENMU Regents to Meet in Special Session on August 18 – The Eastern New Mexico University Board of Regents will met in Special Session at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, in the Regents Room of the Administration Building to discuss the Research and Public Service Submission to the New Mexico Higher Education Department.

Regents meetings are open to the public.

Opportunity to Promote Your Organization at Dawg Days – The Dawg Days Community Fair is an opportunity for departments and organizations on the ENMU campus to introduce what their department or organization has to offer the incoming freshmen. Booth Volunteers Sought for County Fairs – ENMU Alumni Affairs will have a booth at both the Clovis (Aug. 15-20) and Portales (Aug. 22-27) county fairs that will be manned from 4-10 p.m. each weekday evening as well as on Saturdays. Department of Music Hosting Auditions for Musical Production

The Department of Music in Portales is hosting open auditions for the fall musical production of "Into the Woods."

Auditions will be on Tuesday, Aug. 30 beginning at 4:30 pm.

Actors and singers can sign up in a half-hour time slot on the Vocal Area Notice Board next to Dr. Jean Ornellas' office (Music Building 207), or can call Dr. Ornellas at 562.2561 or Dr. Jason Vest at 562.2371. Leave a message requesting a time and you will be notified. Auditions will take place in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building.

All roles are open, including several non-singing roles. Participants should prepare 32 measures of a song (preferably from the musical theatre genre) and a one-minute monologue. An accompanist will be provided, so bring sheet music.

The performances will be held Oct. 27-30 in Buchanan Hall. Rehearsals will be held evenings and Saturday mornings.

ENMU Athletic Training Honored by Lone Star Conference

For the second time in three years, the Eastern New Mexico University athletic department have been honored with the Lone Star Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year award. In 2009, ENMU earned South Division Staff of the year, while Southwestern Oklahoma State, earned honors for the North Division.

In 2009, current ENMU Head Women’s Athletic Trainer, Lora Ferguson, along with Dustin Rush, assisted Ed Kabrick. Kabrick is now the head athletic trainer at Central Oklahoma after a decade at Eastern.

The LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year award is presented annually to the top institution as voted by the head athletic trainer of each member institution.

The purpose of the award is to raise awareness of the athletic training profession. Criteria for the award include the athletic training staff’s hospitality toward visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness with supplies, equipment and services for visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness for emergency situations; and care for injured athletes from visiting teams.

Becker Joins ENMU Cross Country/Track and Field Coaching Staff

Eastern New Mexico University cross country/track and field coach, Mike Harney has announced the addition of Jessica Becker as an assistant for the coaching staffs of both programs for the 2011-12 season. She served as an assistant at McPherson College, in Kan., since the 2009 season.

“We are very excited to add Jessica Becker as a member of our coaching staff,” said Harney. “Jessica brings with her an abundance of knowledge about track and field. Beyond that, she is a very strong recruiter and very driven individual, who will be able to take our student athletes to the next level.”

In her two years at McPherson, Becker brought in 35 athletes in her first season as recruiting coordinator, in addition to serving as strength & conditioning coach and travel coordinator. Becker also assisted with directing a number of cross country and track meets.

With her focus being on throws, jumps, multi-events and hurdles, she guided 14 NAIA national qualifiers, multiple All-Americans and a national champion in the high jump.

From 2008-09, Becker was an assistant coach at Bethany College, where she worked with five NAIA national qualifiers and two All-Americans. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, she prepared practice plans, recruited and presented a clinic for local high school/junior high school coaches.

From 2005-2008, she wore several hats at USD #306, in Gypsum, Kan., as the assistant track coach, junior varsity volleyball coach and freshman girl’s basketball coach.

As an athlete at Bethany, she was a six time All-American, including two national championships as a shot putter.

Becker earned degrees in pre-kindergarten-12 health & physical education and physical health & wellness with a concentration in coaching, at Bethany College. She graduated Cum Laude and was an Academic All-American from 2004-2009. Becker is currently working on a master’s in physical education, recreation and health. She is set to graduate in May 2012.

Gabriel Available for Adoption
	`Gabriel Age: 12 Grade: 7th` This wonderful young man is Gabriel. Everyone that meets this child wants to get to know him and cares about him. He is kind, thoughtful and sweet. While quiet at times, when he shares a smile with you the day seems a little brighter. He loves to spend time with his foster parent and enjoys her company. He likes to help out when he can and doesn't give too much grief over his weekly chores. Gabriel attends church in his current placement and enjoys it immensely. He loves the learning environment as well as the opportunity to make new friends that church provides. Although he has not had the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities in the past, he has recently enrolled in karate and really enjoys it. He is always ready to model his karate gi for you and share with you what he has learned. Gabriel performs at grade level and is always looking to make new friends at school. His teachers enjoy him in the classroom and love assisting him in his studies. Gabriel is a bright, fun, healthy young man that will be an absolute JOY to parent and have in your life. We are accepting home studies at this time for 2-parent and single parent homes. With other children in the home, Gabriel would be best suited as the youngest in birth order--he would thrive in a situation with an older brother or two to model after.
