The Technology Building (new name still pending), at a cost of $9 million including furniture, will be ready to host the art and anthropology departments in the spring semester.

The building is being constructed to be eco-friendly.

Steve Collins, grounds manager, says, "The new art/anthropology building was built in such a way to be eco-friendly, starting in the earliest stages of design. The architect and engineers designed many eco-friendly features, including much of the material used in the actual construction, a few of which are waterless and water saving restroom fixtures, eco-friendly carpet, interlocks between the operable windows and the air handlers, high efficient heating and cooling machines, no lighting pollution from exterior lights (Lights do not shine upward only downward) and automatic interior lighting systems designed to conserve energy.

"The building was also designed to capture and store enough storm water, based on area average rainfall, to water the landscaping around the building without having to use municipal water supplies.

"This building was designed to attain the “United States Green Building Councils” silver rating as was the newly remodeled Music Building.

"The University was notified this week that enough points were attained at the Music Building that ENMU has been awarded the USGBC LEEDS rating of silver for that building, which is an achievement that the University can be proud of."

Editor's Note: Former ENMU student Janet Bresenham is an instructor of communication, news director at KENW-TV and faculty advisor for The Chase student newspaper. She also used to work as a student writer for the Monday Memo editor.

Q. When did you begin working at ENMU?

I began working at ENMU in January 2011 as an adjunct faculty instructor of communication. I taught media writing for the spring 2011 semester.

I am now working full-time at ENMU, beginning with the Fall 2011 semester.

Q. What are the main duties of your job?

As instructor of communication, I am teaching several undergraduate courses:

COMM 205 Reporting Techniques: In this course, I teach students how to become ethical, responsible, reliable journalists, including how to find newsworthy stories, how to cover those stories, how to write various types of news stories for print, online and broadcast journalism, as well as public relations.

                 COMM 344 Broadcast Workshop: In this course, I guide the students through a semester of practical, hands-on broadcast experience with several supervised opportunities on campus. The students also meet with me and fulfill additional academic requirements, such as submitting regular reports on their progress and experiences in a real-life broadcast learning environment.

                COMM 360 Journalism, PR Workshop: This course is similar to COMM 344, except that the students are put into supervised opportunities that give them non-broadcast journalism and public relations experience.

                I am also working as the new KENW-TV News Director, so I am preparing to hold auditions for this year’s News 3 New Mexico teams. I am opening up the auditions and news teams to ENMU students across campus from ALL majors. Auditions will be Aug. 30 from 1-4 p.m.; Aug. 31 from 2-4 p.m. and Sept. 1 from 1-4 p.m. Once auditions and sign-ups are complete, I will select news teams and we will start intense journalism training, and then work on practice newscasts from start to finish and ultimately work toward airing a high-quality news program at 5pm weekdays on KENW-TV.

In addition, I serve as the new Faculty Advisor for The Chase newspaper, which involves coaching/feedback sessions with The Chase staff, as well as backing up the Editor-In-Chief. Because The Chase is a student-run publication, however, we do not control content or request coverage but rather leave those decisions up to the Editor-In-Chief. Our main goal is to have a quality newspaper that maintains its journalistic integrity as an objective news publication, while helping students learn to become better writers, reporters, editors and photographers.

Q. What have you enjoyed most about your job, and what have been the biggest challenges?

                My favorite part of the job by far is the opportunity to work with students. I really enjoy teaching and helping students learn. In addition to helping students learn new skills, figure out their strengths and passions in life, work toward their goals and achieve their dreams, I especially enjoy helping students learn ways to overcome the challenges they may face, both in life and academically.

                The very best part of my job is when a student decides not to give up and learns the life skills necessary to do what it takes to work toward a goal. I love to help students realize their potential and to discover they have what it takes to follow their heart, no matter what challenges they face. Seeing students gain a better understanding of how important it is to take personal responsibility in their own lives is extremely rewarding.

                Another part of my new job that I really love is that the Communication Department is now part of the College of Fine Arts. As a creative artist, I am thrilled to be working directly with my peers in Theatre, Dance, Music, Art and Filmmaking.

                The biggest challenges of any teaching job involve the amount of paperwork, including grading, and levels of bureaucracy inherent in any educational system. To be a good teacher also requires a significant investment of extra time and energy for planning, organization and carrying out quality learning experiences for students. However, the rewards are even more significant when it comes to student learning.

Q. What were you doing before you came to ENMU, and what other jobs have you held?

                In my most recent teaching experience before coming to ENMU, I taught elementary education, special education and children’s theatre at a public Arts Academy in Clovis.

                I have a long, successful career as an award-winning journalist, with print and broadcast journalism experience and public relations. I have worked as a journalist for various newspapers and magazines as a reporter, photographer, news editor, New Mexico Bureau Chief, copy editor, free-lance writer/photographer and magazine editor/coordinator. I began my broadcast experience with my own on-air program at KVSF Radio in Santa Fe and I have done broadcast news in eastern New Mexico, as well.

                I also have done public relations work promoting community events and helping non-profit organizations, especially food drives and efforts to help children and families.

                Additionally, I have practical experience in the business world, as well as in the creative arts. I have worked as a theatre actress, dancer, singer and musician in regional productions, including the annual outdoor “Billy The Kid” melodrama that previously held performances every summer weekend at the Caprock Amphitheatre near San Jon, N.M.

Q. What are your degrees and majors?

Q. Where were you born, raised, and what was your life like growing up?

                I was born in Albuquerque, but my family moved out of state when I was one year old. After that, I grew up in New York, California and northern Italy.

                When I was five years old, my family was involved in a car crash, in which my mother, Barbara, and my first brother, Craig, were killed and I was injured. After that, I spent many summers with my grandparents in Clovis.

                After my father remarried, I was blessed with a sister, Linda, and a brother, Dave, both of whom have been extremely important in my life and I love them very much.

               Dave and I lost our sister three years ago, Aug. 18, suddenly and under very tragic circumstances. So now my brother is my main family by blood. But I am extremely blessed to have really amazing friends who have become my family by choice. I also have a wonderful dog named “Bella” who I rescued and who is part of the family.

                Dave is a creative, talented, successful TV producer/writer and documentary filmmaker who has produced programming for Animal Planet, the Discovery Channel, MTV and other networks. One of the most recent programs he produced is “Wild Recon” for Animal Planet, which involved traveling around the world to some of the most remote parts of every continent.

Q. What are your hobbies?

                For most of my life, I have been a singer/songwriter and I taught myself how to play rhythm guitar to accompany myself. I have performed music in a variety of genres and venues. Now, I concentrate on writing and sharing original contemporary inspirational songs, which I share at area churches, community organizations and regional events. I also have traveled throughout the United States and to Papua New Guinea and Australia as part of my music ministry.

                I love to travel and learn new languages and experience new cultures and people. I started learning French when I was in the fourth grade and have traveled to Paris and the Loire Valley region of France. I learned Italian when my family lived in Milano and I loved traveling all around northern Italy and Switzerland. My very favorite place to visit was Lake Lugano in the Italian/Swiss Alps. I also have recently taught myself some conversational Spanish so I can help more people in this area.

                I love being active outdoors as much as possible. I am an avid, lifelong cyclist and especially enjoy long-distance cycling. I once rode my bicycle solo about 800 miles from northern Idaho to northern California along the Pacific Coast and I have cycled the Santa Fe Century (100 miles in one day) twice. I was a runner as a young girl and recently began running again. I have fun competing in 5K races and someday hope to run at least a half-marathon. I also grew up loving to swim and hope to someday swim with dolphins, learn to snorkel and get to parasail and do sea kayaking on the ocean. I love the mountains and really enjoy downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, rock climbing, rappelling, hiking and camping.

                Even though I am not much of a spectator, I am crazy about cycling and love the “3 Weeks in July” known as Le Tour de France, as well as other pro-cycling races such as La Vuelta a Espana, Giro d’Italia, the Tour of California and the Tour Down Under in Australia. I also love watching and cheering for everyone who takes part in the annual Ironman Triathlon Championships in Hawaii.

And of course, being from New York, I am a true blue Yankees girl. My brother Dave and I got to go see the NY Yankees play at Yankee Stadium when we were kids and it was the unforgettable thrill of a lifetime. It doesn’t hurt that my NY Yankees currently have Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera to motivate me to watch and fully appreciate the wonderful game of baseball.

                In my free time, I also love to watch movies, especially anything involving George Clooney.

Q. What is your ultimate career goal?

                Ultimately, I want to do something pretty close to what I get to do now, which is working with students to help them benefit from my professional and personal experience and to try to make a positive difference in their lives.

                I plan to continue my work as a singer/songwriter, inspirational speaker, writer, photographer and author as well.

                My most important and ultimate goal in life is to share the power of hope.

Q. What gives your life meaning? Besides career goals, what else do you hope to accomplish?

                Love, hope, joy and my deep faith in a loving, forgiving God are what give my life meaning. I have faced enormous challenges all my life but I am determined not to let circumstances rob me of joy. The power of hope has helped me survive even seemingly insurmountable tragedies.

                One of the most recent songs I’ve written is called “Love is the Only Thing That Matters in the End.” The more life I experience, the more precious love becomes. I believe with all my heart that there is nothing more powerful than the love of God and the love of friends and family. Love and hope can sustain us when everything else around us changes.

                I also believe that we are all here to make a difference and to help each other learn to survive in this world.

                At this point in my life, the main thing I want to accomplish is to live a life of service to others, to love and appreciate the people I care about in my life and to share with people that no matter what they face in life, they can find the strength to go on and not give up.

                One of my favorite quotes is this: “When the world says, ‘Give up,’ HOPE whispers, ‘Try it one more time.’” (source unknown)

Q.   What is your general impression of Portales, and ENMU?

            I love living in Portales. It has become the hometown I never had growing up. We moved around so much most of my life I never had a “permanent address.” The funny thing is after living in big cities and traveling around the world, I never thought I’d want to stay in a small, rural town. But what I love most about Portales is the people. I have met such wonderful people who really do look out for one another and help each other. Some of my favorite people in the whole world are people I met in Portales.

           Having ENMU here in Portales gives us access to some of the theatre, music, dance and cultural arts that I miss living in a rural area. I have known many of the people here at Eastern for quite awhile from my years as a journalist in this region and from being an active member of the community.

Q. Other thoughts?

        I have lost a lot of the people I love throughout my life, starting when I was a little girl. Because of that, life – and love - have always been deeply meaningful to me. I have chosen to live my life with joy, love and forgiveness despite the challenges I have faced.

        After my only sister died unexpectedly three years ago, I have become more determined than ever to share hope with everyone I can.

   Last year, I decided to train for my very first triathlon as a way to honor my sister’s life. The triathlon – called Tri To Make A Difference – was held on Sept. 11, 2010, which was my sister’s birthday. She was a nurse who loved working with children and this triathlon was 100 percent for the Children’s Miracle Network to help local children with severe medical needs.

         My brother, Dave, flew out from Los Angeles to cheer me on and support me. That triathlon, held at Lake Tanglewood in the Palo Duro Canyon area of West Texas near Amarillo, was the hardest thing I’ve ever done physically, but I completed it.

Janet trained for and completed the triathlon to honor their sister, Linda, a pediatric nurse who died tragically three years ago.

However, I also was the last person to finish the race and even received a special award because I never gave up. (They even played the theme from “Rocky” as I ran across the last bridge to the finish line.) I received the “Indomitable Spirit Award for Perseverance and Achievement” and it means more to me than if I had won my age division.

For so many reasons, i f I could share one thought with people, it is this: There is always hope. Always. My life is living proof of it.

Meet Rebecca Perko: New Recruiter

Editor's Note: Rebecca Perko began working as a recruiter in Enrollment Services on June 28. In this interview, she discusses her thoughts and experiences – past and present.

Q. What are the main duties of your job?

My job is first of all to encourage high school students to attend college. I provide information about the exciting programs and activities offered at ENMU and educate potential students about our terrific campus. I will meet with high school students at their high schools, college fairs and when they come to visit our campus. I will help them through every step of the admission process.

Q. What have you enjoyed most about your job, and what have been the biggest challenges?

I have enjoyed getting to know my fellow recruiters. They are wonderful people and have been extremely helpful and welcoming. I am also enjoying meeting new students as they come to register for classes. I am looking forward to school starting and meeting with potential new students at their high schools.

Q. What were you doing before you came to ENMU, and what other jobs have you held?

After I graduated from ENMU I spent a year working in Albuquerque doing marketing and bookkeeping for a local grocery store. I loved my job but I wanted to share my love of Eastern with potential new students.

Q. What are your degrees and majors?

I graduated from Eastern New Mexico University May 2010 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with an emphasis in Design and Technical Theatre.

Q. Where were you born, raised, and what was your life like growing up?

I was born and raised in Albuquerque. My family is very close, I have a large extended family that includes many aunts, uncles and cousins. My dad is a civil engineer and my mom runs a family business with her three siblings.

I grew up working in the family business which provided me with a wide variety of customer service and business skills at a young age. I have a younger sister, Victoria. She is 19 and has just started her sophomore year in college. She is majoring in communication and psychology.

Q. What are your hobbies?

I love theatre and enjoy attending productions when I can. I am on the advisory board for the ENMU chapter of my sorority Zeta Tau Alpha. I am also very involved in my church. I teach religious education classes and volunteer for various programs throughout the year.

Q. What is your ultimate career goal?

My ultimate career goal is to teach high school theatre. I want to show students the beauty and value of expression through art. I am currently working on my master's in secondary education degree.

Q. What gives your life meaning. Besides career goals, what else do you hope to accomplish?

I want to make a difference in the world. My life will have meaning if I leave the world better than when I came. For me, it doesn't have to be something huge but if I can touch the lives of those around me and make a positive impact on them, I will be successful.

Q. What is your general impression of Portales, and ENMU?

I like Portales; it is a nice community. I enjoy the small-town atmosphere.

I think that ENMU is a great place to go to school and to work. As a student I was very successful here because of the commitment of faculty members who cared about me as an individual and I think that is important for any student to find.

ENMU Alumni Association 2nd Annual Golf
Tournament Raises $12K for ENMU Scholarship Fund

The ENMU Alumni Association raised $12,260.51 to benefit the ENMU scholarship fund during its 2nd annual golf tournament on July 15 at the Desert Greens Golf Course in Albuquerque.

Thirty-one teams of 124 ENMU alumni and friends enjoyed a day on the course for a cause and surpassed both the participant and fundraising goals for this event.

Event co-chair and ENMU Alumni Association board member Terry Othick credited the tournament’s success to the many volunteers on the ground in the Albuquerque area and in Portales who worked tirelessly to sign up teams, secure hole sponsors and organize the event.

ENMU alumni and Portales resident Peter Thompson led the team with the lowest score for 1st place in this year’s tournament, bagging the $600 merchandise prize that the team split four ways.

Thompson’s team members included Brent Gossett, Bruce Beebe and Leo Lovett.

Pro Shop gift certificates prizes were also given out for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place based on team score, as well as a special award for worst score to be sure no one was left "in the rough!"

Dr. Michael Shaughnessy Provides Tips for Responsible Drinking

Be Aware – how alcohol affects YOU – for some people it makes them:

sleepy – which affects their driving
Angry and Combative – which affects their relationships and causes “ road rage”
Disoriented – which impairs their driving and coordination
Sick – which also affects their ability to drive safely and courteously and react quickly.

Don’t Drink and Drive

As the school year begins, it seems relevant to remind everyone about the dangers of drinking and driving. Even one beer, even one glass of wine, even one mixed drink can impair reaction time, vision, one’s control of one’s vehicle, and can result in an accident, or damage, or destruction or even death.

If you ARE going to drink , make sure there is a designated driver.
If you ARE going to drink, make sure that you call a cab to escort you home.
If you ARE going to drink, make sure your wife/husband/significant other can drive you home.
Worst case scenario – Call the local police or have the bartender call them for you. Or walk to a local hotel.

The local police, EM’s and ER docs have enough to do, so we want to prevent any car accidents and injuries.

If you have problems with alcohol – Get Counseling.
If you have problems with booze – Go to A.A.
If you become inebriated easily – avoid drinking altogether, or —

Have someone monitor your intake – Have them cut you off – Allow your friends to be a friend and take your keys.

Slip the bartender a ten-dollar bill with a post-it note indicating that you have a problem and he or she should water down your drink (and cut you off).

Drink plenty of water before drinking, and eat plenty to get a full feeling – some places have canapés.

Accept Responsibility – Instead of drinking, play pool, watch t.v., play video games, listen to music, eat peanuts, pretzels, and

Do Not Drive If You Are Impaired. Coffee will not “sober" you up – Only time will.

Even certain medication and fatigue can impair your driving abilities.

Stay Safe and Sober!

Scott Smart, vice president for Business Affairs, has been appointed by Gov, Susanna Martinez to serve as a member of the State Investment Council – which oversees the investment of $15 billion in state funds.

His term is from 2011-2016.

Dr. David Kilby, assistant professor of anthropology, has received a $50,000 Infrastructure Seed Grant from New Mexico EPSCoR.

This grant funds two 8-week classes which will offer undergraduate ENMU students hands-on experience in scientific research design, data collection, data analysis and presentation of results.

Students will investigate climatic changes at the end of the last Ice Age, providing information that will help understand and anticipate changes to New Mexico water resources due to contemporary climate change.

Research will take place at the Blackwater Draw Locality 1 archaeological site and other localities north of Portales.

These classes, offered during the second 8-week session of the fall 2011 and spring 2012 semesters will count for credit for anthropology, and perhaps geology and biology majors.

Dr. Kilby says, “I think this a great opportunity for undergraduates to directly participate in problem-oriented, topically-relevant scientific research, and I hope that students from a variety of STEM fields will participate.”

EPSCoR, funded by the National Science Foundation, is an Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research in science. The Seed Grant program is designed to increase scientific research experiences for undergraduate students.

Judy, a retired French teacher in both the Texas and New Mexico public school systems, spent a year abroad in France while at ENMU and traveled there extensively in the years after that. She hadn’t been back in a decade, however, and planned the trip this summer that included Justine.

They divided their 10 days together between Paris and Nice, where they visited the main coastal villages and beaches. This trip was Justine’s first trip abroad.

An avid hiker, she sought out the Chieueterre region of Northern Italy and completed a day-long 12km trail that winds through five villages. She said, “It is Italy’s version of our national parks.”

Justine described the trip as an experience she’ll never forget that changed her and and her world views and perspective.

Justine will earn a BA in education in December 2011 with an emphasis in teaching the natural sciences. She is student teaching this semester at Portales High School and is also a member of the ENMU soccer and track teams.

Judy lives in Lubbock and owns Down and Dirty, a garden business. She is also a professed "groupie and supporter" of the arts in that community and takes pride in collecting the works of Lubbock and other regional artists.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last name for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 3, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 3rd 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communicative Arts and Sciences (but not communications department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you have won the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter ina word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.

Tips for Reconciling P-Card – Here are some valuable tips to use when reconciling your p-card statement:

--Remember to click on the yellow “Receipts” button and enter your comments in the box provided. Do not use the "White Comments" button.

--If you allocate your transaction among multiple accounts, remember to print out that transaction and attach it to your statement.

--Remember to print the ENMU Billing Statement. This is the only statement that is allowable.

--Please make sure the amount on the receipt matches the amount on your statement.

--And finally, the August p-card statements are due in the Business Office by noon, Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Amateur Radio Club Classes Begin September 8 – The Greyhound Amateur Radio Club will sponsor classes to assist individuals to obtain your first amateur radio license, or to upgrade to the next level. Event: Encore presentation of the Department of Theatre students' performance of *In the First Place,* which consists of scenes, songs, and dances dramatizing helpful information for incoming freshmen about ENMU. From the definition of ASAB and the importance of study skills to a warning about campus sprinklers, the one-hour show is a fun night in the theatre appropriate for all audiences and especially important for new students.

Department of Music Hosting Auditions for Musical Production

The Department of Music in Portales is hosting open auditions for the fall musical production of "Into the Woods."

Auditions will be on Tuesday, Aug. 30 beginning at 4:30 pm.

Actors and singers can sign up in a half-hour time slot on the Vocal Area Notice Board next to Dr. Jean Ornellas' office (Music Building 207), or can call Dr. Ornellas at 562.2561 or Dr. Jason Vest at 562.2371. Leave a message requesting a time and you will be notified. Auditions will take place in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building.

All roles are open, including several non-singing roles. Participants should prepare 32 measures of a song (preferably from the musical theatre genre) and a one-minute monologue. An accompanist will be provided, so bring sheet music.

Air Force Academy Band in Buchanan Hall on November 17

The United States Air Force Academy Band from Colorado Springs, Colo., will present a free concert by the Academy Winds on Thursday, Nov. 17th at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.

The eclectic, non-stop, action filled program includes light classics, world music, patriotic selections and a special tribute to the Navajo Code Talkers.

Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15–Oct. 15) is the period when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic Cultural heritage and Hispanic culture. Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 31-day period. The play gives another point of view completely opposite to the black legend of la Conquista.

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team took their first victory of the year in a pre-season exhibition game against New Mexico Highlands University Thursday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field.

The Cowgirls held the Zias scoreless through the 68th minute of play before Paola Loya (F, Fr., Albuquerque, N.M. /Albuquerque High School) put the game winning goal in the back of the net. This proved to be the lone goal of the game, leading to a final of one to nothing in favor of Eastern New Mexico.

After being on the defensive for the start of the game, the Zias turned the momentum around with 20:00 minutes to go in the first half. Eastern outshot the Cowgirls four to one heading into halftime. The Zias took their momentum into the second half and scored in the 68th minute of play. Freshman Alysia Carrasco (F, Albuquerque, N.M. / La Cueva High School) sent off a hard cross from the right side which allowed Loya to knock the ball right past Highland’s keeper. The Zias finished the game with strong defense to keep the Cowgirl scorers at bay.

Senior keeper Sierra Cardenas (Wheat Ridge, Colo. / Wheat Ridge High School) split time in the net with freshman Kellie Hogan (Woods Cross, Utah / Woods Cross High School). The keepers combined for eight saves in the game.

Women’s soccer will be back in action Thursday, hosting Colorado School of Mines. The match will begin at 1 p.m. MST.

Men’s Cross Country Fourth in South Central Regional Poll

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCA) released its preseason regional rankings for the 2011 season on Tuesday. The poll ranked the Greyhounds fourth in the region behind Lone Star Conference rival Cameron University who ranked third.

The Eastern New Mexico University team did rank ahead of Abilene Christian University who placed tenth in the poll. Six of the top seven finishers from last year are returning for the Greyhounds, from a team that placed seventh at the South Central Regional Meet last year.

The Eastern New Mexico Men’s and Women’s Cross Country team will open their season in Ruidoso, N.M. in a dual meet against Texas Tech University on Sept. 2.

ENMU-Roswell Gets Plane Painted for Free

Students enrolled in the Aviation Maintenance Technology program at ENMU-Roswell got a close up look at the newly painted Boeing 727-100 freighter used for training. The plane is now parked on the ramp east of the Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) building, 12 W. Challenger, at the Roswell International Air Center.

For the past few weeks, Jim Burress, General Manager at Dean Baldwin Painting, has been utilizing the aircraft to train some of his newer employees on priming and painting techniques. Dean Baldwin then completed a final paint job with the college logo at no cost to the school. Fed Ex donated the airplane ENMU-Roswell’s AMT program in 2007. ENMU-Roswell president, Dr. John Madden, thanked Burress and the staff at Dean Baldwin staff for their work in removing the Fed Ex logo and repainting the plane.

Burress said Dean Baldwin was pleased to donate the paint job and the labor involved, which would typically cost between $40,000 and $50,000. He saw it as a win-win opportunity for both his company and for ENMU-Roswell students, who receive hands-on training on live aircraft through the program.

The 727 is used for training on large aircraft systems, including fuel systems, rigging, hydraulics, auxiliary power units, and electrical systems. Burress said his company hires trained airframe and powerplant mechanics and told the students they have a bright future ahead of them.

The AMT program at ENMU-Roswell recently revised its training curriculum. Students can now complete the requirements for a Certificate of Completion in only 14.5 months. Instruction in the revamped program began August 15 with a full class of students. The classes and labs have been restructured to better meet the needs of students and industry. The revised curriculum is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. This new shortened timeframe, paired with ENMU-Roswell’s competitive cost of attendance, positions the program as one of the most sought-after in the nation.

Beginning the 54th year of instruction, ENMU-Roswell kicked off the fall semester with an in-service meeting for staff and faculty on Aug. 19. A number of employees were recognized for their dedication and years of service.

Bob Cates, president of the ENMU-Roswell Foundation, presented the 2011 Kosa Merit Awards to Darlene Klassen, mathematics instructor and Jesse Davis, emergency medical services instructor. The award, instituted by the Kosa family in 1970, recognizes academic and vocational faculty for excellence in teaching and service to the institution. Chosen by their peers, the honorees receive an engraved plaque and a stipend of $300.

Several employees were also recognized with certificates and pins for their years of service.

Portales’ award-winning writer of paranormal romances, Darynda Jones, will present the program at the next meeting of the Friends of the Portales Public Library, scheduled for 12 noon Thursday, Sept. 1 in the library’s meeting room at 218 South Avenue B.

Jones' manuscript for her first book, FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT, won the 2009 Golden Heart Award for Best Paranormal Romance. Her newest book, SECOND GRAVE ON THE LEFT, was released this month by St. Martin’s Press. These are the first of six books Jones has sold in two three-book deals to St. Martin’s Press.

While Jones' books are aimed at adult readers, her library presentation will be family-friendly and appropriate for all ages. She’ll be reading a passage from one of her books, talk about how she came up with ideas for the series currently being released, and discuss the writing and publishing process.

Copies of both books will be available for purchase and signing by Jones at the presentation. FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT was reviewed in the July 2011 issue of New Mexico Magazine, where reviewer Patricia West-Barker noted, “While readers new to paranormal romance novels may find the sex gratuitous, the tone irreverent, and the premise impossible, these features are precisely what aficionados of the genre expect—and what can make the book so much fun for other open-minded readers.”

The meeting is a brown bag lunch, as usual, and the public is warmly invited to attend. A brief business meeting will precede Jones' presentation.
