On Sept. 19, The New York Innovative Theatre Awards will honor 1955-58 ENMU drama major Robert Patrick O'Connor (who writes under the name Robert Patrick) with the 2011 Artistic Achievement Award, "recognizing an individual who has made a significant artistic contribution to the worldwide Off-Off-Broadway theatre community."

Mr. Patrick, born on Sept. 27, 1937, in Kilgore, Texas, lives in Los Angeles and will not be able to attend, so actress Shirley Knight, who won her Tony in Mr. Patrick's play "Kennedy's Children," will accept the award. Mr. Patrick has sent a DVD acceptance speech which will be played after Ms. Knight accepts the award.

At ENMU, Mr. Patrick, who graduated from Roswell High School, played James, the brother of Christ, in "Family Portrait," Mister Lundy in "Brigadoon" and choreographed and performed musical numbers in the 1955 and 1956 "Swanee" revues.

He says, "I learned to have confidence in myself in theater under instructors R. Lyle Hagan and David Scott, as well as from upperclassman Donovan Marley, who later went on to produce plays by me at the Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts and at the Denver Center Theatre Company."

Since 1964, Mr. Patrick has had thousands of productions of dozens of plays on six continents from "The Haunted Host" at the first Off-Off Broadway theatre, the Caffe Cino, to "Kennedy's Children" on the West End, Broadway, on CBS Cable, and worldwide in many languages.

Tony winner Harvey Fierstein has starred in three productions of "The Haunted Host," and the play has been performed from Toronto to Sydney. In 1969, Mr. Patrick's play "Camera Obscura" was included in the anthology show, "Collision Course," along with plays by Lanford Wilson, Sam Shepard and Israel Horowitz.

Samuel French, the play publishers, referred to Mr. Patrick in 1972 as "New York's most-produced playwright."

In 1976 he wrote "My Cup Ranneth Over" for Marlo Thomas and Lily Tomlin.

He traveled for 10 years to over 1,000 high schools and high school festivals on behalf of The International Thespians Society.

He is the only artist to be honored on three separate occasions with "Coffeehouse Chronicles" in his honor at La Mama Experimental Theatre Club, the oldest surviving Off-Off Broadway theatre.

He has published plays, poems, and columns in hundreds of publications, a novel, "Temple Slave," an autobiography, "Film Moi or Narcissus in the Dark," and a DVD about the Caffe Cino.

He lives in retirement in Los Angeles where he maintains a website about the Caffe Cino and pre-1970 Off-Off Broadway theatre.

Chris Beaty Teaches, Judges and Performs in Latvia

Dr. Chris Beaty, associate professor of music, spent the 2011 Spring semester on sabbatical from ENMU teaching as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar grantee at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music in the capital city of Riga, Latvia.

Dr. Beaty was a Visiting Professor in the newly created Jazz Studies department at the largest music college in the country and taught applied jazz saxophone and jazz flute lessons as well as directed the freshman jazz combo.

During his five-month assignment he also had many performing opportunities, including concerts with the Super Action Saxophone Faculty/Student Quintet, the Riga Saxophone Quartet and a solo performance at the Saxophonia International Saxophone Festival hosted by the city of Riga in February.

He also served as a member of the international competition adjudication panel during the festival, judging 75 of the best saxophonists, ages 8-18, from throughout the nation and neighboring Lithuania, and he gave several lecture/performances to Latvian high school students as a part of U.S. Embassy-sponsored outreach activities.

Dr. Beaty’s family accompanied him to Latvia and took advantage of living in the largest city in the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) by studying art and music (Dr. Beaty’s oldest daughter auditioned, rehearsed and performed with an orchestra at one of the nearby music high schools) in Riga as well as visiting several museums during their stay.

The family also reserved a few days in April and May to travel to Tallinn (the capital of Estonia), Stockholm and Amsterdam where they enjoyed the sights, food and rich culture of each city.

New Prof Had 30-Year Career in Law Enforcement

Andy Nazario, assistant professor of criminal justice, has worked in law enforcement for 30 years before recently retiring to teach law enforcement to students at Eastern New Mexico University.

Mr. Nazario is in his first full semester at ENMU. Before moving to Portales, he taught online courses for ENMU, and taught at TVI, now known as Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque. He has worked in law enforcement in Lubbock and in Albuquerque.

He is in the final stage, provost approval and oral defense, for his Ph.D. in business and criminal justice from North Central University in Prescott, Ariz.

In law enforcement, he has worked as a patrol supervisor, in criminal investigations into property crimes, robberies and homicides, spent five years in internal affairs investigating other officers, and spent his last three years as the area commander for the East Mountains – one of three command areas in Albuquerque.

He remembers working one of the pioneering DNA cases in 1992, “but the prosecutors didn’t know how to handle DNA evidence at the time and didn’t get a conviction.”

Mr. Nazario went to Scotland Yard in England in 1985 to study DNA.

Mr. Nazario has his bachelor’s in physical health and education from Texas Tech University, his master’s in public affairs from New Mexico Highlands University, and a certificate of achievement from the FBI national academy from the University of Virginia.

“My favorite quality about ENMU is the friendly environment. Everyone is always so welcoming, and the professors and Dr. Gamble are always so helpful in anything I need help with,” explains Mr. Nazario.

When not working, he enjoys competing in body building (even though he has not done much lately), working out, football, and he enjoys linguistic anthropology.

Albuquerque's Most Wanted – John Walsh of America's Most Wanted met Andy Nazraio in 2009 in Albuquerque for a story which aired on national television.

“I enjoy going to Indian ruins and really learning a lot about the hieroglyphs and comparing them with others,” explains Mr. Nazario.

He is married and has a son who is studying graphic art and a daughter is who studying photography and art.

Mr. Nazario’s plans at ENMU are to add a few more classes to the criminal justice area, such as terrorism classes and computer crime.

“This will help our students learn everything possible about what it takes to be in law enforcement and will provide hands-on experience,” explains Mr. Nazario.

Theatre/Art Instructor Did Not Want to Choose Major

"I have been an artist basically since I was a little kid.” – Diane Cole

Although Diane Cole, instructor of theatre/costumer and ceramics, is not new to Eastern New Mexico University, she is now a full-time instructor in both the Department of Theatre and the Department of Art.

This is her first semester teaching in both departments. “It’s been hectic but wonderful,” said Ms. Cole.

This semester is the beginning of the costume design instructor’s third year at ENMU and she is very pleased to be working as a full-time instructor.

“I love to costume and I love to teach art,” said Ms. Cole, “and now I have the best of both worlds.”

Ms. Cole’s most enjoyable experience at Eastern is working with students. This will be her third year as the Costume Shop manager.

It’s more than just teaching for her; it’s a combination of mentoring and designing costumes with and for the students. All aspects of her job have been a joy, according to Ms. Cole.

“The most challenging thing has been getting both shops in shape physically,” she said.

Ms. Cole said that she worked with students to clean and refurbish the costume shop when she first came to ENMU in 2009. She spent two months this summer cleaning the ceramics studio, with much appreciated help from the Physical Plant.

The artist has been teaching since 1981 at schools such as The Chicago Art Institute, Ohio University, Savannah College of Art and Design, University of Colorado and Colorado College.

Before coming to Eastern, Ms. Cole and her husband lived and taught in Colorado Springs, Colo. It was there she started learning the trade of costume design. This new proficiency led to a new career path; she became a design assistant and from there transitioned to a sabbatical replacement position.

Ms. Cole said, "I have been an artist basically since I was a little kid.”

In high school one of her teachers helped her apply to art schools and from there she chose her career path. When she began college at The Kansas City Art Institute, she said they wanted her to choose a major.

“I never wanted a major; I wanted to do everything,” said Ms. Cole.

The artist/costume designer said of all her accomplishments, “My teaching is the accomplishment I’m most proud of.”

Her current goal is to exhibit her own art work again. “It’s been a few years since I’ve been able to steadily create new work, but now that I have a studio in my home, I can begin making work again to show. “

ENMU Alumna Teaching Speech Pathology at Alma Mater

“We have two sweet babies.” – Kimberly Villar

Kimberly Villar helps individuals with speech and/or language impairments.

An assistant professor of communicative disorders, she works with aspiring speech-language pathologists.

She teaches neuroanatomy, language development, and language assessment in addition to supervising in the ENMU Speech and Hearing Clinic.

She says that what she enjoys most about her job is getting to know her students and learning new information about communicative disorders.

“The most challenging part is managing my time, which I’m sure is most people’s struggle,” says Mrs. Villar.

Before she came to Eastern, she was a speech pathologist in public schools, where she helped children with speech and language delays/disorders. When the time was right, she decided to come back to her alma mater.

Mrs. Villar says that teaching at the college level has been a long-time goal. She was inspired by the professors who trained her,

many who she will have the opportunity to work alongside here at ENMU.

Born in Hobbs and raised in Lovington, Mrs. Villar has three brothers. Her step-mom was a schoolteacher and her dad ran an oilfield-related company.

Eventually, Mrs.Villar married her husband of 14 years, Greg, who was one of her brother’s best friends in high school. Greg is also a speech pathologist, currently working in the Lovington Municipal Schools. As an ENMU student, Greg played basketball with the noon-time hoops crew.

“We have two sweet babies,” says Mrs. Villar. She has a daughter that is seven, and a son that is two.

What gives her life meaning is a relationship with Jesus Christ and her family. Mrs. Villar hopes to be in ministry full-time someday. Her hobbies include reading novels, traveling and singing praise and worship in her church. Her favorite authors are Francis Chan and Francine Rivers.

After returning to Portales, Mrs. Villar says that it is still as friendly as ever and that they have made some great improvements at Eastern.
She says that everyone tries to make Portales a great place to work and live.

ENMU Magnetic Levitation Research to be Featured on Science Website

Lourdes Gutierrez, a senior electronic engineering technology major at ENMU, won First Place in the poster session of the Division of Technology and Engineering at the Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM in February 2011 in Washington, D.C. The conference was co-hosted by AAAS and NSF.

Lourdes’ project is a continuation of last spring’s magnetic levitation project. In this project, students used the developed Magnetic Levitation System (MLS) assembly to collect data on the parameters of the MLS. The collected data would be used to derive and verify the nonlinear model that was developed last year.

By using MATLAB software, students develop a few linear models around some specified operating points. Linear control theory and MATLAB are used to design PID and other linear controllers that can levitate the ball at a few specified positions.

MATLAB software was used to simulate the composite system and evaluate its overall performance. The designed controller was implemented in the laboratory using analog electronic components. Hall-Effect sensors were used to identify and measure the position of the ball at anytime.

The sensors’ output voltages are employed to update the control action. Magnetic suspensions are receiving increasing attention as a means of eliminating Coulomb’s friction due to mechanical contact. Magnetic levitation systems are widely used in various fields such as frictionless bearings, high-speed trains, levitation of wind tunnel models and other applications,
Dussaux, M., proc. 2nd Int. Sym Magnetic Bearings, 1990, pp 33-8.

Levitated Ball; Students Collecting Data for Project

By participating in this project, students will learn how to develop the mathematical model of a physical system using collected data from the laboratory. Sensors are indispensable parts of the industrial world and the students need to learn about their functions and applications.

Overall, by working on this project, students obtain valuable experience in application of control theory in industry. Data are collected in the laboratory using a magnetic levitation system and a ball. The collected data are analyzed and fitted into a polynomial model using MATLAB numerical techniques.

For this project, all linear controllers were designed using Root-Locus technique and MATLAB control toolbox. Hall-Effect sensors are tested in the lab to compare the manufacturers provided data with the experimental data. The collected data are incorporated into the overall design of controllers. The performance of the overall feedback control system is also evaluated through MATLAB simulation and laboratory implementation.

This research was mentored by Dr. Hamid Allamehzadeh, professor of electronics engineering, and support was provided by the NSF-funded Western Alliance to Expand Student Opportunities (WAESCO) at Arizona State University.

Lourdes graduated in spring 2011. She has been working for Lockheed Martin at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis since then.

Eleventh Annual Blackwater Draw Atlatl Throw Set for October 22

Eastern New Mexico University's Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology, Blackwater Draw Archaeological Site, and Mu Alpha Nu Anthropology Club are sponsoring the Eleventh Annual Blackwater Draw Atlatl Throw on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Blackwater Draw Site. The site is located along the road to Cannon Air Force Base (State Highway 467), about six miles north of Portales and one mile north of the turn to Oasis State Park.

The competition will include a Target Round and an ISAC (International Standard Accuracy Contest). Registration and practice will start at 9 a.m., with the Target Round beginning at 10 a.m. The ISAC round will take place in the afternoon.

There will be categories for men, women, and children, and prizes for the top finishers in each category.

David Batten, assistant professor of anthropology, says, "Don’t worry if you haven’t done it before. It’s the process, not the prize. Bring atlatls and darts if you have them. There will be some available for loan and sharing if you don’t. This competition is not restricted to primitive technology. Atlatls and darts may be made of traditional or modern materials."

He adds, "Please note that Blackwater Draw is an archaeological site: therefore, stone-tipped darts are not allowed.
There will also be flint-working and other primitive skills demonstrations."

ENMU Will Be Featured on KVII-TV This Week

ENMU's forensics program and an interview with President Gamble are expected to be featured tonight (Monday) at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. (Central Time) on KVII-TV out of Amarillo. (The link to the story will be run in next week's Monday Memo.)

Here, KVII reporter Emily Griffin, native of Floydada, Texas, and former cheerleader at Angelo State University, interviews President Gamble about ENMU's record enrollment of 5,574.

Ms. Griffin interviews Dr. Kathy Durand Gore, chair of anthropology, about ENMU's forensics program.

ENMU Wins 'Rookie of the Year' Award for Up 'Til Dawn

Students sacrifice a night of sleep at the event in honor of the patients and their families that have spent many sleepless nights at the hospital.

This summer executive director Kaylee Peterson and entertainment chairperson Jhordan Granger, students at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, flew to Memphis, Tenn., to attend the St. Jude Up ‘Til Dawn Student Collegiate Leadership Conference 2011.

Up 'Til Dawn, to be held on Oct. 21 in the Campus Union Ballroom, is a student-led, student-run, philanthropic program hosted by colleges and universities nationwide to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

student-run, philanthropic program hosted by colleges and universities nationwide to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

A group of students educate the student body on St. Jude and recruit teams of six to eight to participate in Up 'Til Dawn. Teams fundraise through various side events and then come together to celebrate their accomplishments at the Up 'Til Dawn celebration event.

Students sacrifice a night of sleep at the event in honor of the patients and their families that have spent many sleepless nights at the hospital. Students write letters to their friends and family on the night of the event asking them to participate in the St. Jude’s family and help unite to fight against childhood cancer. This year each participant is expected to provide 15 addresses for donation request letters. Up ‘Til Dawn provides the envelopes and stamps.

ENMU had their first Up ‘Til Dawn event last fall. At this event, there were over 300 students and raised over $11,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“We would also like to see the amount raised doubled from last year, as well as the number of students and faculty and staff,” said Peterson.

While Peterson and Granger were in Memphis they learned a lot of valuable information on how to improve Eastern’s Up ‘Til Dawn program. They met many new people and were able to share ideas back and forth.

They were also able to take a private tour along with the other recipients to Graceland to learn about Elvis and have a catered dinner.

At an award brunch on the last day of the conference, ENMU received “Rookie of the Year.” This award recognizes the most outstanding first-year Up ‘Til Dawn school in terms of developing and implementing a well-rounded program.

“This is an amazing honor for ENMU to receive and the board this year plans to keep the tradition alive of showing St. Jude what ENMU can do for their hospital,” said Peterson.

The Monday Memo received its first place national award in "Electronic Newsletters" this weekend at the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) Convention in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The editor is Wendel Sloan.

Former graduate assistant and assistant editor Robin Haislett, now working on her Ph.D. at Texas Tech, received second place in "Photography on the Web" for photos which appeared in the Monday Memo.

Dr. Mark Dal Porto’s orchestral work Song of Eternity was one of several musical works broadcast on WPRB 103.3 FM Princeton and other radio stations around the world on Sept. 11.

It was featured on a program titled We Remember September 11 – a 24-hour marathon broadcast with Marvin Rosen commemorating the victims of 9/11.

The recording selected for Song of Eternity was done by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

Mark Dal Porto’s orchestral work There Will Come Soft Rains was chosen as the 2011 commissioned work to be premiered by the Santa Fe Community Orchestra on Sunday, October 9, 2011, at Saint Francis Auditorium, Santa Fe, NM, at 2:30 pm (free admission). The winning work was selected by a distinguished panel including Martha Caplin, founding member and frequent concertmaster of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra; Eleanor Eisenmenger, President and Executive Director of Twentieth Century Unlimited; Tom Maguire, former Percussionist and Assistant Conductor of the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra and former Culture, Arts, and Tourism Planner for the City of Santa Fe; and the members of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra.

ENMU's Sets New Enrollment Record with 5,574

Eastern New Mexico University in Portales has set another enrollment record with 5,574 students, an increase of 9.7 percent over last year’s previous record of 5,080 students.

Before that, the previous record was 4,685 students in the 2009 fall semester, which had topped the previous record of 4,342 in the fall of 1972.

Student credit hours, which higher education institutions funding is based on, increased by six percent.

ENMU’s record enrollment includes 4,406 undergraduate and 1,168 graduate students.

These numbers include a record 689 first-time freshmen compared to last year’s previous record of 615, an increase of 12 percent.

The retention rate for first-time freshmen from the fall of 2010 to the fall of 2011 is 64 percent. Last year the retention rate was 62 percent for fall 2009 to fall 2010.

In the residence halls there are currently 1,035 out of 1,140 beds filled.

“We’re very happy with enrollment, in terms of numbers and quality,” said Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president. “We’re especially happy that the average ACT scores of our new freshmen is 20.2, which exceeds the state average of 19.8.”

Dr. Gamble attributes the record enrollment to several factors, including the economy, and a solid reputation for quality academics at an affordable price. “With a total annual cost of only $4,100 for tuition and fees, I think students and their parents see us as a bargain,” Dr. Gamble said.

He noted that the six most popular majors are nursing, business administration, elementary education, biology and a tie between criminal justice and psychology.

Dr. Gamble added, “We also have a safe, attractive and friendly campus in which students truly get personal attention from the faculty and staff.”

Dr. Gamble said that not only is ENMU enjoying record enrollments, but “the caliber of students has never been higher.

“I believe that word has gotten out that Eastern is a great choice for those who are serious about achieving academic and social success. Eastern is committed to providing our students the opportunity to excel in both because we know that they complement each other in enjoying a successful career and personal life.”

Three Buildings Renamed – The recent renovation and repurposing of the former Technology Building and repurposing of the old Broadcast Center and the Annex have necessitated the renaming of these three University buildings. The Board of Regents approved the following name changes at its meeting on Sept. 7:

* Art and Anthropology (former Technology Building)
* Art Annex (former Broadcast Center)
* Agriculture (former University Annex)

These changes will be noted in the spring 2012 class schedule, and the new names will be reflected in printed publications, campus maps and building banners. New signage will be installed as soon as possible.

CSP Students Have Fun While Gaining Information

The College Success Program recently held a workshop focusing on educating students about the benefits of being a CSP student. All who attended had a great time and a lot of fun. Students learned about the various programs available, including: scholarships, tutoring, mentoring, career counseling, and receiving help with resumes, degree plans, financial aid, and FAFSA.

The College Success Program is designed to help students stay in college and make good grades. The program provides opportunities for academic development and helps keep students motivated in many ways. One way includes free cultural events and trips for its members. Last spring the program hosted weekend trips to the state capitol, and to west Texas where students went to museums, restaurants and sightseeing.

The College Success Program is located in the Student Success Center, known to students as “The Alley,” on the bottom floor of the Campus Union Building, along with Multicultural Affairs.

Future CSP workshops include: Be healthy-Stay Fit on Sept. 6, Geocaching on Sept. 14, When I Grow Up/Careers on Sept. 20, and Graduate School Prep on Sept. 28.

Get Equal Organization Holds First Meeting

Eastern New Mexico University's Students for Equality-GSA (ENMUSFE) organization recently held its first meeting of the semester in the Sandia Room.

Over 45 people came to support the meeting which included individuals and couples of many orientations, and from all walks of life. The group’s primary goal is to promote a hate-free atmosphere at ENMU, and the surrounding areas, and to further the movement of equal rights for all.

Despite being one of the newest student organizations on campus, Students for Equality, founded in March of 2001, has become active in the University, local schools, and communities of Clovis and Portales.

The organizations past events include: hosting a very successful National Day of Silence, remembering the tragic death of Mathew Shepard and so many others, supporting the formation of a Gay/Straight Alliance at the Clovis High School despite the controversial attempts of the high school to block that formation, and helping to support the formation of Eastern New Mexico Pride which went on to host the first ever gay pride parade in Clovis.

Their efforts have not only been recognized, but rewarded by ENMU by receiving the Best Program by a Student Organization.

The group has many plans and goals for the upcoming semester including: marching in the Home Coming Parade, hosting a Rainbow Ball at the College, holding fund raising drives for charities and events, hosting service activities like supporting the Road Runner food bank, and increasing outreach across our communities in order to promote equal treatment for all disadvantaged or oppressed groups.

The local group’s founder, Robert Johnston, and vice president John Bonner invite the community to come and join them for a fun filled and active semester. A semester of service, change, and pride.

Road Closure – An underground pipeline is being run from the southeast entrance/exit of the Eddy Hall parking lot in between San Juan Village across West 17th Street and up South Avenue J a short distance. The pipe line will then turn west into ENMU property where Lincoln Hall has been demolished.

This project will cause the complete road closure of the intersection of West 17th Street and South Avenue J. A reasonable time for this project to be completed will be on Friday, Sept. 16.

Those individuals who may be affected by this closure will have to use alternative access routes to avoid unnecessary delays. Access routes to Bernalillo Hall will have to be made from West 18th Street. Access to the university from South Avenue I on West 17th Street will be completely blocked. Access to the southeast entrance/exit of the Eddy Hall parking lot in between San Juan Village will be completely blocked. Access to the Eddy Hall parking lot will hav e to be made from South Avenue K only. Access to San Juan Village can still be made from South Avenue I and West 17th Street.

Homecoming 2011: Hollywood Hounds

The Homecoming game will match the Hounds against the Wildcats of Abilene Christian University on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.

Student Organizations are encouraged to participate in homecoming activities by building and entering a float in the Homecoming parade. [application]

To help students defray the cost of building a float, the Alumni Office has contacted area merchants and individuals for financial contributions.

The first10 organizations entering the parade can apply to receive $100 in assistance funds on a first come, first served basis through the Alumni Affairs office. If deemed necessary, organizations may be required to provide receipts for expenses incurred by their float if they receive this funding. Organizations can apply for this funding at the Alumni Affairs office located in the Administration Building.

The deadline to apply is Monday, Sept. 19 by 5 p.m.

Organizations receiving funds can pick up their checks in the Alumni Office in Room 101 beginning on Sept. 30 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communicative Arts and Sciences (but not communications department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you have won the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter ina word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.

“The images comprise selections from two of my projects, Best General View and Horror Vacui,” said Tibayan on his website.

“My recent projects are influenced by the visual benefits of—and challenges posed by—digital culture to our relationship with the history of images.”

“"Best General View’ is a project that considers both the recorded and irretrievable histories a person steps into when making a photograph in the American West. Using an old screen, found color slides, and wall-sized projections, my images are a collaboration of sorts, taken both side-by-side and within the light and landscapes of an anonymous photographer, like a pair of familiar strangers on the same guided tour,” said Tibayan on his website.

“”Horror Vacui’ surveys the material presence of empty billboards and considers their capacity to comment on the environments that surround them,” according to his website.

The artist has a bachelor of arts from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He has also studied abroad at Karl Franzens University in Graz, Austria, during spring of 2004.

The artist is currently a candidate for a master’s of fine arts at the University of Oklahoma.

Air Force Academy Band in Buchanan Hall on November 17

The United States Air Force Academy Band from Colorado Springs, Colo., will present a free concert by the Academy Winds on Thursday, Nov. 17th at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.

The eclectic, non-stop, action filled program includes light classics, world music, patriotic selections and a special tribute to the Navajo Code Talkers.

Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15–Oct. 15) is the period when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic Cultural heritage and Hispanic culture. Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 31-day period. Description: The play is based on Cabeza de Vaca’s own autobiography. Shipwrecked in Florida, suffering as slaves of native tribes, Cabeza de Vaca and Estevanico became shamans. After walking 3,000 miles barefoot, Cabeza de Vaca rejoined the Spaniards and became a defender for the native populations. Estevanico, a black Moorish slave, became a scout for Coronado. The play gives another point of view completely opposite to the black legend of la Conquista.

Late Goal by Herbert Lifts 24th-Ranked Greyhounds to LSC Victory

The 24th-ranked Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (3-0-1; LSC 1-0) appeared to be headed to overtime with West Texas A&M (0-2; LSC 0-1), in Sunday’s Lone Star Conference match, when junior midfielder Kal Herbert’s (Willaston, England/Neston HS) dribbled in from the left side and beat goal keeper Sebastian Furness with a shot inside the far post. The goal lifted the Hounds to a 1-0 victory, Sunday afternoon at ENMU Soccer Field.

The win was the third at home over the Buffaloes in the last three seasons, with all three contests being decided by a single goal. Eastern avoided what would have been the fourth overtime in the series and holds a 1-1-1 record in overtime games against West Texas A&M.

The contest was a defensive struggle with the Buffaloes taking the only shot on goal over the first 45 minutes, along with two corner kicks. It appeared that WTAMU had seized the lead at the 64:30 mark, when Wayne Burton beat ENMU goal keeper Matt Malak (Fr., GK, Doncaster, England/Chesterfield College) after a corner kick, but the goal was nullified, when the Buffaloes were called for being offsides. About 10 minutes later, the Hounds had a scoring opportunity thwarted, when Furness made a diving save on a shot from Rodrigo Pontes (Jr., F, Sao Paulo, Brazil / Faulkner University).

With just 3:58 left in the contest, Julian Roberts (So., MF, Rio Rancho, N.M./New Mexico) drew the WTAMU defense’s attention at the top of the box, before passing to Herbert on the left side. Left one-on-one with Furness, Herbert dribbled in, before firing a strike inside the far post for the 1-0 lead. Furness saved two more shots as the Buffaloes were unable to mount another offensive opportunity.

Eastern held a 10-6 edge in total shots and a 5-1 advantage in shots on goals. The Buffaloes took five corner kicks, while allowing just one. Malak went the distance to earn his third win in net for ENMU, while Furness made four saves for West Texas A&M.

The teams will meet again on Friday, when the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team travels to Canyon, Texas. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. MST.

Zias Take Fifth Consecutive Win Over Bulldogs

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team (1-2) picked up their first win of the season against visiting Southwestern Oklahoma State University (1-2-1), Sunday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field. The Zias, who played 11 freshmen and started seven, looked like a veteran team and kept in control of the ball the whole game. Paola Loya (Fr., F, Albuquerque, N.M./ Albuquerque High School) provided Eastern with a goal and two assists on the day, which helped the Zias cruise to a 4-0 win over the Bulldogs.

The Zias came out fired up and scored what proved to be the game winning goal in the 2nd minute of play. Freshman Alyssa Prinse (MF, Fr., Ls Cruces, N.M. / Mayfield High School) took advantage of a spot on cross pass from fellow freshman Loya, and put a one timer in the back of the net for the first goal of the game, and her second of the season. Eastern’s second goal of the half came almost exactly 20 minutes later when Kimberly Luna took a hearty shot from the right corner of the box which snuck by the keeper, ricocheted off the far post, then bounced off the near post and into the goal. The Zias outshot the Bulldogs in the first half 6-4 and did not allow SWOSU any shots on goal.

In the second half, the Zias showed their dominance by putting two more goals on the board. In the 82th minute of play, Loya put goal three in the back of the net from the cross pass of teammate Angela Sandoval (MF, Fr., Albuquerque, N.M. / Sandia High School). Up 3-0 and with a minute remaining, the Zias weren’t done. Alysia Carrasco (Fr., F, Albuquerque, N.M./ La Cueva High School) beat the Bulldog defense to get in position to take advantage of another cross pass from Loya. With just seconds left to go, the Zias held onto the 4-0 lead to take their fifth consecutive victory from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Alyssa Prinse picked up her second goal of the season, while Luna, Loya, Carrasco each got their first. The defense was led by junior Emily Simon (R-Jr., D, Albuquerque, N.M./ Sandia High School/ University of New Mexico) who effectively led her fellow defenders to keep the Bulldog’s shots to a minimum, and did not give SWOSU the opportunity for any shots on goal.

Women’s soccer will be back in action Tuesday, Sept. 13, when the Zias host conference rival West Texas A&M. The match will begin at 4 p.m. MST.

Stevens and Reid Named 2010-11 Greatest Greyhound and Zia

Eastern New Mexico University Athletic Director Dr. Jeff Geiser has announced that Tillman Stevens (DB, Baytown, Texas/Sterling HS) has been selected as the Greatest Greyhound for 2010-11, while Nicole Reid (Sr., Pueblo, Colo./East HS) has been selected as the Greatest Zia.

“Both Nicky and Tillman are outstanding representatives of what this award means,” said Geiser. “They are great athletes, great citizens and great team members. They are very deserving of this award.”

Stevens, currently an assistant with the football team, led the Lone Star Conference and finished tied for seventh in the nation, with 11.1 tackles per game. He also tied for the conference lead and 11th in the country with six interceptions, including one, which her returned 62 yards for a score against Central Oklahoma. He registered a career-high three interceptions along with ten tackles and two passes broken up. In the fourth quarter, he sealed the game by returning an interception 62 yards for a score. For the game, Stevens registered 81 yards on interception returns. Stevens has intercepted five passes in the last two games. Of his 122 tackles, he made 61 solo stops and seven tackles for a loss. In a win over Southeastern Oklahoma State, Stevens blocked a point-after-touchdown attempt, giving him a blocked kick for the third consecutive season.

Reid Was the Zias’ top finisher four of cross country seven meets last year, and earned All-Lone Star Conference status after taking fourth at the championships. She was ENMU’s first All-LSC runner since the 2003 season. Reid had four top-ten performances, including a first-place finish at East Central. Currently, Reid holds four of the Zias’ top-ten 5k times, including the team record, set at Oklahoma State. In track & field, she set ENMU records for 5k, 6k, 800m and 1,500m. Reid is a two-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country and Coaches of America All-Academic Selection. In 2010, she was the first Zia to earn all-conference status in track & field.

Sept. 15: ASAB and Hispanic Affairs presents Slam Poet Gabriela Garcia Medina in the CUB Ballroom at 8 p.m. The event is free to all students with a valid ENMU student ID.

Gabriela Garcia Medina is an international spoken word artist that has been asked to perform at high schools all the way up to international conventions. Her poetry has given her the opportunity to perform on television programs including MTV as well as internet programs like SiTV’s “What’s Hot” section. Gabriela has also been a member of the Latino Theatre Company Lab for two years and helped to bring quality to LA’s Latino community. Come out and enjoy the inspiring performance of this talented artist.

Though shy at first, Dakota is very charming and outgoing once he gets to know you and his fun personality comes to light. In school; he enjoys all of his subjects except chorus.

He says he would like to go to college, but is unsure what he would like to study. Due to the unstable past that Dakota has had, he sometimes struggles to believe in the future. While he can be a shy boy, he does enjoy his peers’ company along with hanging out with his foster parents.
