Announcements can be submitted to the Monday Memo by University community members (employees, students, retirees and alumni), and must be received by Thursday at noon for publication on the following Monday. To submit an item, use the Submit Announcements form to the lower right, or e-mail monday.memo@enmu.edu. Announcements can only be accepted from off-campus groups that are non-profit. Record Enrollment Story Featured in Newspapers

Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Dr. Joan Hughes have an article appearing in Educational Technology Vol LI number 5

Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy, Dr. Susan Fulgham and Dr. Neil MacGregor have an article also appearing in the same journal at the same time.

Dr. Mark Dal Porto, professor of music, received a 2011-2012 ASCAPlus Award. This marks the 6th year in a row that Dal Porto has received this accolade from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.

The award is given annually to composers whose works are judged by an independent, distinguished panel of judges based upon the value of each writer’s catalog of original works which receive notable and exemplary recognition and performances within the past year.

ENMU Named ‘Military Friendly School’

Eastern New Mexico University in Portales has been named a “Military Friendly School” by G.I Jobs, a magazine devoted to helping military members make the transition to civilian life.

This distinction makes ENMU among the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide in assisting current military members and veterans.

In the acceptance letter to ENMU, G.I. Jobs, wrote, “The competition for our 2012 ‘Military Friendly Schools’ list was fierce and as a result we raised the already stringent criteria to a higher benchmark. Your school is among the elite.”

The list was determined through research into approximately 8,000 institutions of higher education on the services, benefits and special attention offered to veterans.

A few of the services that ENMU provides to military members include providing a VA counselor, helping them get waivers to pay in-state tuition, giving them academic credit for elective courses based on their military experience (at the discretion of individual departments), waiving physical activity course requirements, providing military scholarships, and offering evening and online classes for their convenience.

"We are very pleased to be named a ‘Military Friendly School,’” said Steven Gamble, ENMU president. “With our close proximity to Cannon Air Force Base, we are sensitive to the needs of our military members who serve our country with such distinction. We want to do everything we can to help them achieve their educational goals and make a successful transition to civilian life.”

Just a Friendly Reminder from the Friendly Folks in Payroll – This is a friendly reminder that, Monday, Sept. 19, is the payroll paperwork deadline. This means that all PANs, SPANs, and Special Pay Slips must be received in the Human Resource Office by 5 p.m. in order to be processed for the 09/30/11 payroll.

If your department has hired new student, faculty, or staff employees, send them to the Human Resource office to sign up for payroll. If you are a new student, faculty, or staff employee, bring 2 forms of ID with you to the HR office, Admin 113, to complete the required payroll documents. All paperwork submitted after this date will be included in the following payroll. There will be no exceptions for failure to meet this payroll deadline.

Examples of required ID's:
Original Social Security Card and Driver's License Original Birth Certificate and picture ID Passport.

Iraq and Afghanistan Military Care Package Campaign

Do you have a parent or sibling serving in a military branch and stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan? Eastern New Mexico University students and employees are reaching out to U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan with a "care package" campaign to let the troops know they haven't been forgotten.

It is our sincere hope that our efforts will demonstrate how much we appreciate our military's efforts as well as honoring loved ones that are serving our country. This project started during the summer of 2008, and nineteen of our military members have been honored with a package from ENMU.

To include your loved one in this care package campaign, please reply to this message with the information noted below or send the information to Academic Affairs, ENMU Station 2:

1. Your name and relationship to the package recipient

2. Full name, unit, and mailing address of the package recipient

3. Photo of recipient, if possible

Photos will be posted on our "Honoring Those Who Serve" bulletin board which is located in the administration building, room 204. You may email your photo or drop it by AD 204.

If you do not have a parent or sibling serving in the military but would like to help with the project, you are welcome to donate items for the packages. The types of items needed are:
Batteries (especially AAA and AA), magazines and books, toiletries (shaving cream, disposable razors, lotion, body and foot powder, toothbrushes, and manicure items), individual packaged facial wipes, hard candy, gum, trail mix, cards or other games.

Items may be dropped off in Academic Affairs (AD 204).

Homecoming 2011: Hollywood Hounds

The Homecoming game will match the Hounds against the Wildcats of Abilene Christian University on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.

Student Organizations are encouraged to participate in homecoming activities by building and entering a float in the Homecoming parade. [application]

To help students defray the cost of building a float, the Alumni Office has contacted area merchants and individuals for financial contributions.

The first10 organizations entering the parade can apply to receive $100 in assistance funds on a first come, first served basis through the Alumni Affairs office. If deemed necessary, organizations may be required to provide receipts for expenses incurred by their float if they receive this funding. Organizations can apply for this funding at the Alumni Affairs office located in the Administration Building.

The deadline to apply is Monday, Sept. 19 by 5 p.m.

Organizations receiving funds can pick up their checks in the Alumni Office in Room 101 beginning on Sept. 30 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Your float must be built on a 16’ to 20’ flatbed trailer (no pickups, please). If you are a recipient of the $100 funding, you must agree to prominently display the business sponsor’s name who provided this funding on your float.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communicative Arts and Sciences (but not communications department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you have won the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter ina word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.

This is just a friendly explanation.

Education Scholarships Available for Spring – Elementary, secondary, and special education majors who will be student teaching in the spring 2012 are eligible to apply for the Kellie McGaarh Scholarship. English majors who are planning on a teaching career are eligible to apply for the Larry Razura Memorial Scholarship to be awarded for the spring 2012 semester.

United Way Campaign Underway

Eastern New Mexico University’s United Way campaign is underway.

ENMU’s goal this year is $20,000. United Way donations may be earmarked for any non-profit charity, or for the general United Way fund.

ENMU Hosting Mezzo Soprano on September 24

Eastern New Mexico University in Portales will host a performance by Clara O’Brien, guest mezzo soprano, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building.

The performance is free and open to the public.

According to her website, O’Brien, assistant professor of voice at the School of Music of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, came to North Carolina after more than 20 years of performing in Europe and the United States.

According to Elizabeth Wade, instructor of voice at ENMU, O’Brien will instruct a masters’ class for vocal students from 3-5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23. The class will also be held in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building, and is open to everyone.

The accompanist will be James Douglass, associate professor of collaborative piano at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.

Runnels Gallery in Golden Library will host a solo exhibition, “Our Fill of Elsewhere,” of the photography of Sherwin Rivera Tibayan through Saturday, Oct. 1 during normal library hours (call 562.2624 for hours).

A reception will be from 5-6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 in Runnels Gallery.

“The images comprise selections from two of my projects, Best General View and Horror Vacui,” said Tibayan on his website.

“My recent projects are influenced by the visual benefits of—and challenges posed by—digital culture to our relationship with the history of images.”

“"Best General View’ is a project that considers both the recorded and irretrievable histories a person steps into when making a photograph in the American West. Using an old screen, found color slides, and wall-sized projections, my images are a collaboration of sorts, taken both side-by-side and within the light and landscapes of an anonymous photographer, like a pair of familiar strangers on the same guided tour,” said Tibayan on his website.

“”Horror Vacui’ surveys the material presence of empty billboards and considers their capacity to comment on the environments that surround them,” according to his website.

The artist has a bachelor of arts from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He has also studied abroad at Karl Franzens University in Graz, Austria, during spring of 2004.

The artist is currently a candidate for a master’s of fine arts at the University of Oklahoma.

Air Force Academy Band in Buchanan Hall on November 17

The United States Air Force Academy Band from Colorado Springs, Colo., will present a free concert by the Academy Winds on Thursday, Nov. 17th at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.

The eclectic, non-stop, action filled program includes light classics, world music, patriotic selections and a special tribute to the Navajo Code Talkers.

Hispanic Heritage Month—Detailed Schedule

Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15–Oct. 15) is the period when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic Cultural heritage and Hispanic culture. Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 31-day period. It was enacted into law on Aug. 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

Description: The play is based on Cabeza de Vaca’s own autobiography. Shipwrecked in Florida, suffering as slaves of native tribes, Cabeza de Vaca and Estevanico became shamans. After walking 3,000 miles barefoot, Cabeza de Vaca rejoined the Spaniards and became a defender for the native populations. Estevanico, a black Moorish slave, became a scout for Coronado. The play gives another point of view completely opposite to the black legend of la Conquista.

Athletic Teams Have Good Weekend – The ENMU athletic teams had a good weekend, with the men's soccer team defeating West Texas A&M in Canyon (making it a season sweep), the women's soccer team defeating Texas Woman's in Denton (ENMU scoring for the first time against them since 2006) and tying Texas A&M Commerce in Commerce (the first time in nine games that Commerce had not won), the Zia volleyball team defeating Oklahoma Panhandle in Goodwell, and the Greyhound football team defeating Oklahoma Panhandle in Goodwell. The cross country team's competition in Joplin, Mo., got canceled because of weather.

Zias Edge Pioneers in Soccer

At Denton, Texas, freshman forward Paola Loya scored an unassisted goal with just under 10 minutes left in regulation, then lightning shortly thereafter led to the suspension of play and eventually the Zias were awarded a 1-0 Lone Star Conference win over Texas Woman’s.

The goal, Loya’s second of the season, was the first for the Zias (3-2-0, 2-0-0 LSC) against the Pioneers since a 2-1 win over TWU in Portales on Oct. 20, 2006. The Pioneers (0-3-2, 0-2-0) had shut out ENMU each of the last four seasons, outscoring the Zias by a combined 8-0.

Late Dramatics Continue for Zias in Overtime Tie With Lions

For the second time in three days, the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team (3-2-1; LSC 2-0-1) received a dramatic goal, late in the game. Freshman forward Angela Sandoval (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) tallied her second goal of the season to lift the Zias to a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Texas A&M-Commerce (3-2-1; LSC 1-0-1), in Lone Star Conference action, Sunday afternoon at Lion’s Soccer Field.

The tie marks the first time in nine meetings with A&M-Commerce in which the Lions have not earned the victory. The goal came just two days after Paola Loya’s (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque HS) game-winning goal against Texas Woman’s, which came just 1:19 before the game was prematurely ended, due to lighting.

The Lions controlled action throughout regulation, with a 26-7 edge in total shots, but senior goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge HS) made three saves during the first 90 minutes of play.

Stephanie Neeley got Texas A&M-Commerce on the board with her first goal of the season, 11:07 into the second half. With just 1:14 remaining in regulation play, Emily Simon (Jr., D, Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS/New Mexico) found Sandoval for the game-tying goal.

A&M-Commerce held a 3-2 lead in total shots in the first overtime period, but the Zias came back with a 5-2 advantage in shots in the second overtime. All five of the shots on goal in the overtime periods were taken by Eastern. Neither team had a corner kick in the game. Cardenas made six saves for ENMU, while Randi Hafele had eight for the Lions.

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team will open a three-match home stand on Tuesday, against Wayland Baptist. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. MST. – Adam PItterman

Zia Volleyball Picks Up Sweet Sixteen

The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team (3-9) defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State University in three games by the scores of 25-15, 25-15, 25-18, Saturday afternoon , at Oscar Williams Field House. With the victory, the Zias stretch their win streak against the Aggies to 16-0.

In the first match, seniors Kristen Beck (MB, Odessa, Texas/ Odessa High School/ Midland College) and Jessica King (Jr., MB, Las Cruces, N.M./ Oñate High School) led the Zias with three kills apiece, and combined for Eastern’s six of 12 overall kills. The Zias started the game off with a service ace by Kennedi Catano (Fr., S, Amarillo, Texas/ Tascosa High School) and maintained in control for the whole set. The service ace sparked a 14-7 run in favor of the Zias, which the Aggies could not recover from. Each team exchanged points before the Zias finally put game one away by a score of 25-15.

The second match started off in favor of the Aggies when they were able to capitalize on some Zia miscues and jumped to a 4-0 lead. The Zias battled back from their initial deficit and grabbed the lead after winning the point at 13 all. Back-to-back service aces by Beck put the Zias up by two and gave them the spark to go on a 12-2 run to cruise to another 25-15 victory.

Up two games, Eastern did not waste any time taking game three’s momentum. The Zias scored first and never fell behind in the set. Amber Durand (Jr., OH, Onalaska, Wash./ Onalaska HS/ Columbia Basin College) put down four kills and led all Zias in offense in the third and final game. Eastern took the final set by a score of 25-18, and swept the Aggies.

Kristen Beck led all Zias with nine kills, nine digs, and six service aces for the match. Freshman Kennedi Catano successfully ran the Zia offense and picked up 28 assists to go along with four digs, and two service aces. The Aggies were led by Hanna Syling who picked up nine kills on the day.

The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team will be back in action on Tuesday, September 20th when they face Cameron University in their first home match of the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. MST. – Adam PItterman

Big Plays Power Hounds Past Aggies, 28-19

Sophomore safety Jayson Serda (Albuquerque, N.M./Manzano HS) returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to close out a 28-19 win for the Eastern New Mexico University football team (1-2) against Oklahoma Panhandle State (0-3), Saturday night at Carl Wooten Stadium.

OPSU seized a 10-7 lead in the second quarter on a 20-yard run by Josa Mendoza, but the Hounds answered with a six-yard touchdown reception from Darian Dale (Sr., WR, Bay City, Texas/Bay City HS) and a one-yard plunge from Tony Valenzuela (Sr., RB, Seagraves, Texas/Seagraves HS) to take the lead for good and hold a 21-10 edge at intermission.

Serda took the kick off to open the second half at the Greyhound 11-yard line and broke an 89-yard return to solidify the Hounds’ lead. Oklahoma Panhandle scored the only 10 points of the second half, scoring a touchdown with 1:10 left to pull within nine points. Their two point conversion failed and Eastern recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Valenzuela rushed for a season-high 89 yards and a touchdown, while Wes Wood (Jr., QB, Muleshoe, Texas/Muleshoe HS) connected for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Lane Wood (Jr., LB, Amarillo, Texas/Muleshoe HS) paced the defense with eight tackles. The Greyhound defense allowed a season-low 69 rushing yards after allowing an average of 318 yards over the first two games.

The Eastern New Mexico University football team will return to Lone Star Conference action next week, when they host Tarleton State. Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m. MST. – Adam Pitterman

Hounds Break Through in Canyon on Stewart Header

Early in overtime, junior defender Michael Stewart (Katy, Texas / Cinco Ranch HS) headed an Anthony Bardon (Fr., MF, Dallas, Texas/Birdville HS) corner kick into the West Texas A&M (0-3; LSC 0-2) net, to lift the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (4-0-1; LSC 2-0) to a 1-0 victory, Friday evening at The Pitch.

The win was the fourth for the Hounds in their series against West Texas A&M and gave them their first season-sweep of the Buffaloes. It also marked the first time that Eastern had defeated WTAMU outside Portales.

The game was a defensive struggle throughout, with all four of West Texas A&M’s shots coming in the opening half. Greyhound goalkeeper Matt Malak (Fr., Doncaster, England/Chesterfield College) was called on to make the only save of the game, on a shot from Lukas Garcia, 9:33 into the first half.

Neither team could muster a shot in the second half, but Bardon launched a corner kick into the Buffalo box, 57 seconds into the overtime period to set up Stewart’s game-winning goal. The score marked the second game-winning goal of Stewart’s career.

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will return to action on Monday afternoon, when they host Wayland Baptist. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. MST. – Adam Pitterman

Zias Win LSC Opener against WTAMU

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team ( 2-2; LSC 1-0) picked up its second-consecutive win of the season against West Texas A&M at the Eastern New Mexico Soccer field Tuesday afternoon. This is the third win for the Zias in their series with West Texas A&M. All three wins have come by a single goal.

The Zias maintained possession for the majority of the first half. Junior Emily Simon (D, Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia High School/University of New Mexico) headed the ball into the goal after receiving a corner kick from Kimberly Luna (R-Jr, Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia High School) to score the first goal for the Zias. Eastern’s second goal came late in the first half Alysia Carrasco (Fr., F, Albuquerque, N.M./ La Cueva High School) with a cross pass from Victoria Perez ( R-Fr. Rio Rancho, N.M/Rio Rancho High School).
Eastern was able to hold the score at 2-0, until late in the second half when the Lady Buffs scored a goal. The Zias were able to then run the clock out.

The Zias had five shots on goal in the contest, while the Lady Buffs had 13 shot attempts. Eastern New Mexico gathered two corner kicks and WTAMU had three.

The Zias return to action on Sept. 16, traveling to Denton, Texas to take on Texas Woman’s University in Lone Star Conference competition. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 3 p.m. MST.

Herbert Receives Lone Star Conference Weekly Soccer Honors

Junior midfielder Kal Herbert (Willaston, England / Neston High School) from the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team has been selected as the Lone Star Conference Men’s Offensive Player of the Week, for his performance in the Greyhounds victory over West Texas A&M, last week. His play has helped the Greyhounds achieve fourth in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America South Central Region poll.

Herbert is the second ENMU player to receive LSC weekly honors this year. He joins last week’s Offensive Player of the Week, Anthony Bardon (Fr., F, Dallas, Texas/Birdville HS). It also marked the second selection for Herbert.

Herbert had three shots on goal in Eastern’s LSC opener against West Texas A&M. With just 3:58 left in regulation, he scored the only goal of the game, just inside the far post, to lift ENMU to victory. The goal was the 14th of Herbert’s career and his sixth game-winning goal.

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will visit West Texas A&M on Friday, in another LSC match. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. MST start. – Adam Pitterman

Sept. 21: ASAB presents Project Linus in the CUB Lobby at 7 p.m. The event is free to all students with a valid ENMU student ID.

The feeling of love and protection you feel in that certain blanket you have had since you were young is the exact feeling we are attempting to give children in need. Project Linus is an event to help the Nation Wide Organization achieve their goal in “providing love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or in need” with lovingly and homemade blankets.

Please help us to recreate this special feeling for others and get a warm feeling of accomplishment for yourself, and if nothing else, enjoy some refreshments.

Highlights: The Associated Students Activities Board in association with ENMU Health Services, University Policy, and Housing and Residence Life is hosting the Annual Rock Awareness Event on October 1, 2011. This event consists of sponsors promoting a drug free, anti-drunk driving, and healthy lifestyle. An afternoon filled with different genres of music, barbecue provided by Sodexo, and activities, including a drunk driving simulator and raffle for participants. If you would like to have a table at the health fair portion of this event (2-4 pm) to help us educate our students on health and safety, please contact one of the following for more information:

Test yourself by competing in the Hispanic Affairs "Chili Eating Contest", as we offer some of the hottest chili in the world. Thesis Defenses/Comprehensive Exams/Challenge

The Art Department at ENMU-Roswell is now accepting entries for a major international art exhibit titled “Repetition, Repetition, Repetition.” Art works of all styles, all media and all types are being considered, as long as the artist considers repetition to be an element within the work of art. Entries will be accepted through October 20th, 2011. A $15.00 entry fee ($3.00 for students) will be charged. For a prospectus, including entry form, potential exhibitors should e-mail Jennie Bower at jennie.bower@roswell.enmu.edu, or call the Art Department at ENMU-Roswell at 624-7226.

The wide ranging scope of this exhibition is expected to bring international diversity in the arts to our Campus exhibition, as inquiries about submissions of artworks have already been received from Poland and the United Kingdom.

Once entries are in, a jury made up of art department faculty will review the entries and select the actual works that will be exhibited. Once those works are selected, locally based and well known artist and writer Janell Wicht will serve as judge, awarding prizes to first place, second place, third place and honorable mention winners. Cash awards will be granted to the winners. It is expected that most of the works that will be exhibited will be for sale.

The exhibition itself will open on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 with an opening reception/awards presentation the same day at 4:30 p.m. in Gallery 117 in the ASC Building on the Campus of ENMU-Roswell.

Yam Music Series Presents Constant Halo
Every 3rd Tuesday at 7 p.m. the Yam Theatre in downtown Portales will host one band to play for the night.

The fee is only $5 at the door and refreshments will be available for purchase inside.
