Students Being Polished with Etiquette for Real World

In 2011, a committee of university staff and faculty was formed to address improving how ENMU students present themselves to the public. They informally called themselves “The Etiquette Committee.”  The Committee does not yet have a name, but will be named soon.

Committee members are Dr. Haislett, Noelle Bartl, Dean Chris Taylor, Ronda Hutcherson, Brent Small, Susan Larsen, Dawn Wolf-Taylor, Amanda Delgado, Wayne Doney, Gayle Warner, Kimberly Doney and Angela Ayers. 

“We are trying to prepare students for their lives after Eastern,” said Dr. Haislett.  “Even though they may master their academic subject matters, their self-presentation in all its many forms can be equally important in landing a job and having a successful career.  We want to gently offer them ways to polish how they present themselves to others.”

The committee will embark on three initiatives. They are:

1. An Etiquette Dinner in February with the same format as last year.  The dinner is sponsored by SODEXO and hosted by Dean Chris Taylor.
2. A voluntary option of weekly tips to improve self-presentation – named Next Steps-After Adolescence
3. Student-to-student presentations that can be taken to clubs and groups, etc., about self-presentation

Starting Nov. 2 , the committee is embarking on # 2 above, a four-week program called “Next Steps--After Adolescence.”  Students will be informed through The Chase and Monday Memo articles and an all-campus email, then presented one tip per week - two on verbal communication and two on electronic communication.  If they choose to participate, every week a change in their self-presentation style will become evident.  Some of the messages being communicated include:

“What do people/employers want from you?  30-year-olds in 20-year-old bodies.”

“Real adults in the professional world rarely use slang or curse.”

“Eliminate these words: ‘Like,’ ‘Really,’ ‘Awesome.’”

“Change email addresses to something more professional.”  (Some poor email addresses are: “Copscantcatchme,” “Bigthief,” “Badboypants” and “Partygirlmelissa.”)

“Ringtones and messages tell a lot about you.  So why tell the whole world a lot about you?”

“Save friendship talk for friends.”

Look for the tips on posters in the CUB, email and table tents in the dining facilities.

ENMU Hosting Federal Reserve Representatives on November 3 – The El Paso branch of the Dallas Federal Reserve will make a series of presentations on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m. in Becky Sharp Auditorium in the College of Business Building. A reception will be at 4:45 p.m. 

The topic is "Crisis, Recession and Recovery: What's Next for the Economy?"

The presenters will be Roberto Coronado, senior business economist; Tom Siems, senior economist and director of Economic Outreach; and Robert W. Gilmer, senior economist and vice president.

The presentations will cover economic topics related to New Mexico and the border region of the United States.
 
The presentation is free and open to the public.

Roberto A. Coronado
Senior Business Economist
Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, El Paso Branch

Roberto Coronado is a senior business economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas in El Paso. His research at
the Fed focuses on issues pertaining to the Mexican economy, the maquiladora industry, the U.S.–Mexico border
economy, and the West Texas and New Mexico economies. Coronado has written articles for various Federal
Reserve publications and academic journals in both the United States and Mexico.

Coronado is also a clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he teaches in the master’s
of science in economics program. He obtained his PhD in economics from the University of Houston and holds a BBA
in accounting and economics and a MS in economics—both from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Robert W. (Bill) Gilmer
Senior Economist and Vice President
Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas

Bill Gilmer is a Senior Economist and Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.   He joined the Houston Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas as a senior economist in 1989, and has been the officer in charge of the El Paso Branch since 2003. 

He co-manages the 11th District’s regional economic analysis, and is editor of two of the bank’s regional publications, Houston Business and Crossroads.  His work on the Texas economy has been noted by publications such as The Economist, Fortune, the Wall Street Journal,and the New York Times.

Dr. Gilmer holds an M.A. and a Ph. D. in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin.  He was born in Amarillo, Texas, and grew up in El Paso where he earned a B.A. in economics from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Prior to joining the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas in 1989, Dr. Gilmer spent seven years on the staff of the Chief Economist at the Tennessee Valley Authority, producing TVA's annual economic and energy forecasts.  He also worked as a research economist at the Institute for Energy Analysis in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the Institute for Defense Analysis in Arlington, Virginia.
    
Dr. Gilmer was as an intern in the Texas Governor's office while in graduate school, and spent 1987-88 as a Visiting Research Professor at Ball State University in Muncie Indiana.

Thomas F. Siems
Senior Economist and Director of Economic Outreach
Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas

Thomas F. Siems is senior economist and director of economic outreach in the Financial Institution Relationship Management Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. In this capacity, he partners with economists in the Fed to gather information on emerging trends and policy issues of interest to financial institutions in this region (Texas, northern Louisiana and southern New Mexico), and oversees economic outreach efforts that provide additional opportunities to listen and learn from the region’s constituents.

Dr. Siems also teaches operations research and management science in the Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University. Thomas earned a B.S.E. in industrial and operations engineering from The University of Michigan, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in operations research from SMU. He is also a graduate of The University of Michigan’s Public Finance Institute, the University of Colorado’s Graduate School of Banking, and SMU’s Graduate Marketing Certificate program.

Dr. Siems has published more than 50 articles in various academic journals, books and Federal Reserve publications and is the National Association for Business Economics’ only two-time winner of the Edmund A. Mennis Contributed Paper Award. His work has received extensive attention from leading publications, including The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, USA Today, Dallas Morning News and Investor’s Business Daily. Thomas has also authored and published five children’s picture books, including his newest release in 2009, The Dangerous Pet, which poetically challenges the way the next generation thinks about debt.

Tom has been married for 28 years, has four children and two black labs. He finds rest for his soul by vacationing on the beach and in the mountains, and enjoys life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Thanksgiving Holiday Break

ENMU-Portales will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday break following the conclusion of all night classes on Tuesday, Nov. 22, and will reopen with its normal schedule on Monday, Nov. 28.  Please note that all Tuesday night (Nov. 22) classes will be held as scheduled.

University buildings will be closed during this holiday period in order to reduce utility costs.  Please note that Golden Library and University Computer Center will be open from noon to midnight on Sunday, Nov. 27.

Wednesday, Nov. 23, will be observed as a mandatory vacation day for staff.

Employees' vacation accruals will be used to cover their normal schedule on Wednesday.  Employees who have been with the University less than three months and are not permitted to use their annual vacation accrual per university policy or have insufficient annual leave balances should contact the office of Human Resources to inquire about the use of future vacation accumulations.  Support staff may use compensatory time if balances are available.  There will be no alternate assignments available for Wednesday, Nov.23.

Students' checks will be available for release at the Cashier's Office on Tuesday, Nov. 22.  Direct deposits will be processed as usual with a deposit date of Friday, November 25. ENMU non-student checks will be available for release in the Human Resource Office, Admin 113, between 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22. Checks that are not picked up will be mailed on Monday, Nov. 28.

Justice League having Garage Sale on November 29 – The ENMU Justice League is having a Garage Sale Fundraiser and we are asking for donations! If you have anything you want to get rid of or would like to donate we would greatly appreciate it.

Important Academic Dates

Nov. 4 at 5 p.m. - last day to withdraw from a 16 week course and/or 2nd 8 week course.  This is the last day to completely withdraw from the University (if all classes are within the 16 weeks or 2nd 8 weeks), information on how to completely withdraw from the University is located in our catalog page 32 http://www.enmu.edu/academics/resources/ug-catalog-11-13.pdf.

November 6, 2011 - Spring 2012 registration begins for currently enrolled students, timeline based on classification (see the spring 2012 schedule once posted).

NOTE:
All students are required to see an advisor before registering for spring classes.  Login to your My ENMU www.enmu.edu/myenmu and review your holds -students that have declared a major your faculty hold will not be placed on your account until October 29, 2011 (see above).

If you have an Advising Center hold on your account you will need to complete any registration needs with the Advising Center.  If you have a faculty advisor hold on your account you will need to speak to your advisor and they will then remove your hold and for any registration assistance you may contact the Office of the Registrar.

Payroll Deadlines – The paperwork deadline (PANs, SPANs, W-4s, Insurance enrollment, Special Pay Slips, etc.) will remain as scheduled, Monday, Oct. 31. Electronic timesheets must be submitted and approved no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. Due to Veterans' Day on Friday, Nov. 11, this deadline must be adhered to in order to process the payroll.

Reminder that Veterans' Day is not a University closure, only a bank closure holiday.

Student checks will be available for release at the Cashier's Office of Thursday, Nov. 10. Direct Deposits will be processed with a deposit date of Thursday, Nov.10. Description: Bookmobile is a program/service sponsored by the New Mexico State Library.  While the Bookmobile continues to stop in populated areas with no libraries, it also makes regular visits to senior assisted living centers and day-care centers.  African-American Affairs would like to make this program more successful by asking you to donate new or used books in very good condition. Employee Insurance Coverages, Switch and Open Enrollment, November 21-23

The New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority (NMPSIA) is offering the following switch and open enrollment opportunities.  Premium changes for these adjustments will be made on the December payroll deductions for coverage changes effective January 1, 2012.

Note:  If you are enrolling or adding a dependent during the switch/open enrollment period you must present to Human Resources the original supportive documentation to prove your dependents meet the eligibility requirements.  Call HR at 562-2115 if you have questions regarding the documentation required.

1.     Health Insurance Switch Enrollment

Employees who are currently participating in one of the ENMU health insurance plans now have the opportunity to "switch" their enrollment between plans.  The health plans offered are Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Presbyterian.  Employees may also "switch" their coverage options between high and low during this time as well.  Employees interested in "switching" health insurance plans or coverage options should complete a Health and Dental Insurance Switch Form available in the Human Resources Office or online at http://inside.enmu.edu/forms/hr  You must print the form and submit it, with any other required documentation for dependents, to Human Resources no later than November 23, 2011.

2.     Dental Insurance Open Enrollment

Open enrollment for United Concordia dental insurance is now being offered to employees who are eligible for insurance benefits but are not currently enrolled for dental coverage.  Employees wishing to enroll for dental insurance during open enrollment may choose between the United Concordia high and low options.  Employees interested in enrolling need to complete the Dental Insurance New Enrollment Form available in the Human Resources Office or online at http://inside.enmu.edu/forms/hr  You must print the form and submit it, with any other required documentation for dependents, to Human Resources no later than Wednesday, November 23, 2011.

3.     Dental Insurance Switch Enrollment

Employees who are participating in an ENMU United Concordia dental insurance plan now have the opportunity to "switch" their coverage option between the high and low options.  Employees interested in "switching" dental coverage options should complete a Health and Dental Insurance Switch Form, available in the Human Resources Office or online at http://inside.enmu.edu/forms/hr  You must print the form and submit it, with any other required documentation for dependents, to Human Resources no later than Wednesday, November 23, 2011.

4.     Vision Insurance Open Enrollment

Employees who are not currently covered by the ENMU vision insurance plan (Davis Vision) may now enroll for 2012 coverage.  Employees interested in enrolling need to complete the Vision Enrollment Form available in the Human Resources Office or online at http://inside.enmu.edu/forms/hr or in the Human Resources Office.  You must print the form and submit it to Human Resources no later than Wednesday, November 23, 2011.

5.     Flexible Spending Accounts

ACTION REQUIRED: Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Enrollment-Medical & Dependent Care All benefit eligible employees must complete the Flexible Spending Account 2012 Enrollment Form even if you are waiving this benefit. The contribution limit for the Medical FSA is $5,000. The contribution limit for the Dependent Care FSA is $5,000. This form is available in the Human Resources Office or online at http://inside.enmu.edu/forms/hr.  You must print the form and submit it to Human Resources no later than Wednesday, November 23, 2011.

**New for 2012 is an option for a Cafeteria Plan debit card (mySourceCard(r)) that can be used to pay for qualified medical expenses (outlined in the IRS Publications 502 and 503).  A list of eligible expenses as well as FAQ's are available online at http://inside.enmu.edu/forms/hr A Representative from the Cafeteria Plan will be on Campus on Wednesday, October 26th to answer any questions you may have about Flexible Spending Accounts and the debit card option.  An email will be sent out with exact times and locations.

Employees who opt for the cafeteria plan debit card will no longer be required to submit receipts for reimbursement.

6.     Medical Premium Tax-Shelter Plan

All employees who currently have medical, dental or vision insurance coverage have the option to change their tax-shelter status. Tax-shelter forms are available in the Human Resources Office or online at http://inside.enmu.edu/forms/hr.

7.     Stay tuned...Group Critical Illness Plan Administered through AFLAC

Thanks to all of you who participated in our Survey Monkey earlier this month to help us determine if the Group Critical Illness Plan through Aflac would be a valuable benefit to offer our employees.  Due to your positive response we are moving through the appropriate processes to get approval to offer this benefit and hope to be able to roll it out to you in February 2012.  Stay tuned for more information.

Students for Equality Schedule Upcoming Events – In the spirit of promoting the equal treatment of all persons, Students for Equality invites all employees, studentsts and alumni to the following upcoming event:

•    A Safe Space training and certification will be held on Nov. 2 with time and place TBA.

While everyone is invited to attend our weekly meetings, we encourage those who are, and those who will become, education professionals to attend these presentations and workshops in order to help promote a welcoming and safe atmosphere, which accepts diversity, at ENMU.

As the only GLBT advocacy group on campus and in the community of Portales, we hosted the National Day of Silence here at ENMU in April, for which we earned Best Program by a Student Organization award. We also hosted an It Gets Better presentation, aimed at helping students who are bullied (whether it be because of their sexual orientation, or just being different) to know that it does get better and to encourage others to stand up for those who are bullied. We plan to host, sponsor, and participate in many more events this year and far into the future.

Green and Silver View on November 12 – Please mark your calendar for this year's Green and Silver View, Eastern's preview day for high school seniors on Nov. 12.  The day will be informational and fun for prospective students and their parents who will learn about academic programs, student services and tour the campus.

Sodexo Recycling Program – We hope you will join Sodexo Campus Services in our latest, revamped project, Sodexo's Environmental Action Program. Throughout the campus we have placed new recycling bins. They are intended for your purpose and to keep our campus clean.

If you notice that they are overflowing, please contact Sodexo Dining Services. If you notice that there isn't a bin in a building or you would like to see more bins in a particular building, also contact Sodexo Dining Services and we will do what we can to fulfill that request.

How you can help (along with the recycling bins):
You can help us help the environment in a number of ways:

 1.  Take only the number of napkins you need per meal.
 2.  Take only one cup for each beverage purchase.
 3.  Use paper bags for carryout, where provided.
 4.  Join our Recycle Mug Program or bring your own much from home for beverage purchases.
 5.  Recycle aluminum cans throughout campus at designated recycling stations as well.
 6.  Dine in rather than carrying out.
 7.  Get involved with your school and the Food Service Recycling Program.

Recycle Mug Program:
The average American produces 3.5 pounds of garbage every day. This equates to 1,300 pounds of garbage per year for every man, woman, and child in the U.S. and we are running out of places to put that garbage. Sodexo is committed to working together with our customers, clients, and manufacturers to reduce that waste and to build a better environment for ourselves and our future generations. If you are interested in purchasing a Recycle Mug, they are for sale at Ground Zero, downstairs in the Campus Union Building. The Recycle Mugs will offer discounted prices for refills of coffee and carbonated soft drinks to encourage more frequent use and reduce waste. Sodexo will donate $.15 from the proceeds of every mug sold to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

ENMU Hosting Statewide Music Teachers Conference

Eastern New Mexico University is hosting the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico State Conference on Friday-Sunday, Nov. 4-6.

The public is invited to a special concert by Irish pianist Peter Mack at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building.  Admission is free. Mack has performed throughout the United States and Europe, as well as in Australia and the former Soviet Union. He is the winner of the New Orleans, Young Keyboard Artists and Pacific International Piano Competitions. His prize in the Sherman-Clay competition included a Steinway grand piano. Mack is well known for his extensive repertoire, having performed 25 concertos with orchestras. A choral scholar at Trinity College Dublin, he went on to obtain a doctorate in piano performance from the University of Washington. His primary teachers were Frank Heneghan and Bela Siki.

Mack is equally in demand as a performer, conference clinician and master teacher. A professor of piano performance at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Mack is a Steinway Artist.

A review in the Los Angeles Times stated, "Mack is one of those lucky ones, born with a completely balanced set of talents. He has perfect piano hands, his technique is all but infallible, he has boundless temperament, style and taste, and above all, he communicates directly.”

Conference activities will include exhibitors, junior/senior/young artist competitions, honors auditions, an ensemble recital, student winner’s recital, conference banquet honoring Jane Snow from Albuquerque as Teacher of the Year, and a general membership farewell breakfast.

Portales-born B. J. Brooks will present a workshop on “Integrating Composition and Theory into the Private Studio.”  The discussion will include methods to include theory and composition into the private studio to augment performances and technique repertoire.

Danise Gallaway from the state of Oklahoma and Joann Marie Kirchner from Temple University will address “Side by Side,” choosing duet repertoire that motivates and encourages piano students.

Albuquerque resident Samuel Jacobs will present “Programmatic Music of Liszt,” music directly inspired by or connected to literature.  Featured will be works from the Years of Pilgrimmage and the Sonata in B Minor.

John Olsen, professor of piano at ENMU, will discuss “Teaching the Technically Brilliant Chinese Pianist—The Joys and Challenges.”  Many of Olsen’s students have won regional and national competitions.

Kayla Paulk, instructor of music at ENMU, will speak on “Plays Well with Others: Encouraging Young Pianists to Explore the Art of Accompanying.”  The workshop will focus on encouraging and developing accompanying skills in young pianists.

“Technology You Need” will be the topic of Neil Rutland, instructor of music and director of the Digital Filmmaking Program at ENMU.  He will provide hands-on experience to help professionals decide what music technology they actually need.

Jason Vest, assistant professor of voice at ENMU, will present “Voice Master Class.”  He has sung with orchestras in the United States, Austria and Madagascar.

ENMU Hosting Brass Choir Concert on Thursday

Eastern New Mexico University in Portales will host the Brass Choir Concert at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building.  (It was originally scheduled for Nov. 15.)

The event is free and open to the public.

Michael Ellzey, assistant professor of music, will direct 22 ENMU music students.

The theme of the show is Hollywood; the choir will play music from various movies.

ENMU Hosting Simulare Vitae Juried Exhibit

Eastern New Mexico University in Portales will host Simulare Vitae Juried Exhibit beginning Tuesday, Nov.1, through Friday, Dec. 2 in Runnels Gallery in Golden Library during normal library hours.

The closing reception will be Friday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

Jessie Dodington, the jurist, has chosen 46 out of more than 100 submitted artworks to be part of the gallery exhibition and a published catalog.

Air Force Academy Band in Buchanan Hall on November 17

The United States Air Force Academy Band from Colorado Springs, Colo., will present a free concert by the Academy Winds on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.

The eclectic, non-stop, action filled program includes light classics, world music, patriotic selections and a special tribute to the Navajo Code Talkers.

November is Native American Heritage Month

Although the first “American Indian Day” was declared by the State of New York in 1916, a month long recognition of Native Americans was not achieved until 1990. In that year, President George Bush declared the first National American Indian Heritage Month on August 3rd. His action was based on legislation presented by Senator Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Congressional Delegate Eni Faleomavaega (D-American Samoa). In each of the previous years, Congress had enacted legislation designating “American Indian Heritage Week.”

The purpose of National American Indian Heritage Month is to honor and recognize the original peoples of this land. This year’s heritage month theme “Heritage Through Art: Expressing Experience.” The office of Native American Affairs has planned a month full of activities and events.

Ranch Horse Team Member Claims Cow Work Title

The ENMU Ranch Horse Team competed in Gainesville, Texas, at the North Central Texas College Stock Horse Competition on Saturday, Oct. 22.  Team members included Riata Rivale, James Patton, Sterling Pierce and Jesus Urquijo. 

Rivale earned the champion title in the limited non-pro cow work, and placed fourth in pleasure, fifth in trail, and eleventh in reining, clinching a fourth-place overall finish.

Patton also did well in the cow work securing an eighth-place finish in a tough field of collegiate competitors from schools including Texas A&M University and NCTC.  “I was very proud of James,” said coach Mickie Stowe.  “The trail course was full of brush and logs and even had a log jump and his horse went right over it. Everyone did an awesome job.” 

Pierce finished fifth in pleasure, sixth in trail, eighth in cow work and twelfth in reining in the novice division.  Novice competitor Urquijo and his mount, Capitol Chatter, were a first-time pair in the show ring and gained a lot of experience from the competition. 

Team members credit their continued success in this weekend’s competition to the dedication of coaches Mickie and Doyle Stowe who also made the 14-hour round-trip with the team. 

The team will travel to Stephenville, Texas, on Nov. 4-6 for the Tarleton State University Collegiate Competition.

Cardenas Chosen as LSC Goalkeeper of the Week

Senior goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas(Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge HS) from the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team has been selected as the Lone Star Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, for her outstanding performance in two matches last week.
 
Cardenas’ selection marks the fifth time she has received weekly LSC honors. She was selected earlier this season, twice as a sophomore in 2009 and once as a freshman. This marks the fifth selection of a Zia player this season, and also marks the second Zia to be honored twice this season as Emily Simon(Jr.-R, D, Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS/New Mexico) has also picked up the honor twice. 

Cardenas started both games for Eastern New Mexico and went 2-0 for the week. In 160:51 minutes she did not let a goal while making six saves. In her shutout against Angelo, she picked up her sixth shutout of the season which broke the previous season shutout record of five, which she set in the 2009 season. In addition, Cardenas has gone her last 351:36 minutes without a giving up a goal. – Adam Pitterman

Santos Receives Lone Star Conference Weekly Soccer Honors

Junior midfielder Diego Santos (Natal, RN, Brazil , Universidade Federal de Rio Grande de Norte) from the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team has been selected as the Lone Star Conference Men’s Offensive Player of the Week, for his outstanding performance in the Greyhounds’ wins over Northeastern State and Texas-Permian Basin.

Santos is the fourth Greyhound to earn LSC weekly honors, joining Matt Malak (Fr., GK, Doncaster, England, Chesterfield College), Kal Herbert (Jr., MF, Willaston, England / Neston HS) and Anthony Bardon (Fr., F, Dallas, Texas/Birdville HS). He joins Herbert and Bardon as recipients of the offensive award, while Malak received the defensive awards, earlier in the season.

Santos tallied game winning goals against both Texas-Permian Basin and Northeastern State last week. He added an assist against the RiverHawks, to post a three-point performance in the Greyhounds’s second-ever win in Tahlequah, Okla. – Adam Piterman

Harney and Samoei Receive Lone Star Conference Awards

The Lone Star Conference released their 2011 cross country awards Tuesday afternoon, with Eastern New Mexico University head cross country coach Mike Harney selected as the LSC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the year.  The Greyhounds are currently ranked second in the USTFCCA Division II South Central Region, and ninth in the Nation. 

Harney’s selection marks the second consecutive award for the ENMU cross country team; in 2010 former head coach Eric Boll was chosen as LSC Cross Country Coach of the year. 

Under Harney’s guidance the ENMU men’s cross country team won the Lone Star Conference Championships, and finished first at every meet except for the Oklahoma State Jamboree where they finished ninth in the University race. 

Junior Isaiah Samoei (Eldoret, Kenya/Iowa Western Community College) won the Lone Star Conference Championships, and was named Newcomer of the year by the Lone Star Conference.  Six of the Greyhounds received LSC All-Conference Awards:  Tallam Kipruto (Nairobi, Kenya/Oster High School/South Plains CC)  , Tyler Saiz (Fr. Albuquerque, N.M./Del Norte High School), Mohamed Noor (Sr. Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston High School), Jacob Lozano (Jr. Hobbs, N.M./Hobbs High School), and Justin Netcher (Jr. Clovis, N.M./Clovis High School).

Nicole Reid (Pueblo, Colo/Pueblo East High School) finished ninth for the women at the LSC Championships, followed by fellow teammate Adrienne Montoya (Estancia, N.M./Public Academy for Performing Arts) who finished 13th, both receiving All-Lone Star Conference Awards.  This is Reid’s second All-Lone Star Conference Award; previously finishing fourth at the LSC championship meet in 2010.

The Eastern New Mexico University cross country teams will return to action Saturday November 5th, when they compete in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships.  The meet will be hosted by Midwestern State University, in Wichita Falls, Texas. – Adam Pitterman

Hounds Remain Second in Region

The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released their NCAA Division II cross country regional rankings and the Eastern New Mexico University men’s cross country team has maintained its second place position in the South Central Poll.  The Greyhounds have retained their position for the past three weeks. 

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s cross country took home its first Lone Star Conference Championship this past Saturday in San Angelo, Texas.  Both teams will return to action Saturday, Nov. 5, when they travel to Wichita Falls, Texas, to compete in the South Central Regional Championships.

Zias Fall to Mustangs in Last Regular Season Matchup

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team (8-7-3; LSC 6-5-3) dropped a 1-0 decision to LSC team Midwestern State University (11-5-2; LSC 9-4-1) Sunday afternoon at the MSU soccer field. In Eastern’s last regular season conference match of 2011, they were blanked by MSU in a game that would go to overtime. Six minutes into overtime the Mustangs capitalized on a free kick which resulted in the game’s lone goal.      


Both halves proved to be uneventful as neither team found the back of the net. The Zias and the Mustangs took turns maintaining possession, yet Midwestern outshot the Zias 22-4 and held a 6-3 edge on shots on goal. Three Zias picked up shots on goal while, Alysia Carrasco (Fr., F, Albuquerque, N.M./ La Cueva High School) produced the most offense for the Zias as she picked up two shots with one shot on goal. 

It wasn’t until overtime that Midwestern could connect. Six minutes and thirty-eight seconds into the overtime Maddie Fraser chipped a free kick in play, over the Zia wall to Lindsay Pritchard who finished the play and put it in the back of Eastern’s net. With the goal, Midwestern cruised to the 1-0 win and clinched second place in the LSC play.

The Zias will await the posting of the final conference standings to see who they will face off against in the first round of the Lone Star Conference tournament. Tournament play will begin Thursday, November 3rd. – Adam Pitterman

Greyhounds Capture Win Against First Time Opponent Fort Hays

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (9-3-4) picked up an exciting 1-0 win against visiting Fort Hays State (9-4-2) Friday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field. After 23 minutes in the second half, Michael Stewart (Jr., D, Katy, Texas/ Cinco Ranch High School) picked up his fourth goal of the season to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 win. With the victory, the Greyhounds picked up a win in their first ever meeting with the Tigers.     


In the first half, neither team was able to find the back of the net as both keepers picked up multiple saves to keep the game tied 0-0. In the 68th minute of the game Michael Stewart headed in a ball off of a Julian Roberts (So., M, Rio Rancho, N.M./ University of New Mexico) corner kick to lift the Hounds to a 1-0 advantage.  

Overall, the Hounds outshot the Tigers 25-11 and picked up a 6-3 advantage on shots on goal. Matt Malak (Fr., GK, Doncaster, England/ Chesterfield College) picked up three total saves for the Hounds en route to his fourth shutout of the season. – Adam PItterman 

Lady Buffs Too Much for Zias

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team (8-6-3; LSC 6-4-3) dropped a 2-1 decision to LSC rival West Texas A&M University (8-8-1; LSC 5-7-1) Friday afternoon at The Pitch. Andrea Elizondo (Jr., MF, El Paso, Texas/ Eastwood High School) picked up her second goal of the season and put the Zias up 1-0, but the Lady Buffs rallied back and tacked on two goals to cruise to the 2-1 victory.    

The first half was filled with lots of action, as the final score was determined by three first half goals. In the 16th minute of the game, Elizondo put the ball past the Lady Buff keeper to give the Zias the initial lead. With time winding down in the half, Leslie Briggs and Jessie Thomas score back-to-back goals to lift the Lady Buff to a 2-1 lead going into halftime. 

Both teams were blanked in the in the second half, and the Lady Buffs took the 2-1 victory. Overall, West Texas A&M outshot the Zias 13-7 and picked up a 9-4 advantage on shots on goal. – Adam Pitterman

Greyhound Soccer Ties Incarnate Word

For the third time in the last four meetings, the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (9-3-5; LSC 3-0-2) played to a tie with 12th-ranked University of the Incarnate Word (11-2-3; LSC 2-1-3), in Lone Star Conference action, Sunday at ENMU Soccer Field. This time was different, as the one point in the conference standings clinched the program’s first-ever LSC title.
 
Although the Hounds entered the game, needing only a tie to clinch first place, they came out aggressively on offense. Eastern held a 17-13 edge in total shots in the contest, including a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Cardinal defense was up to the task though. In the second half UIW goalkeeper Chris Fidler made a diving deflection of a Kal Herbert (Willaston, England/Neston HS), which also deflected off the goal post. Later in the half, the Cardinal defense thwarted an Alvaro Joly (Fr., F, Cadiz, Spain/Colegio Guadalete).
 
The Hounds held an 8-7 edge in shots in the first half and a 5-4 advantage in the second half. After each team mustered two shots in the first overtime, ENMU took the only two shots in the final period of play.
 
ENMU goalkeeper Matt Malak (Fr., Doncaster, England/Chesterfield College) made six saves, while Fidler had seven for the Cardinals. Michael Stewart (Jr., D, Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch HS) paced Eastern with five shots, including two on goal, while Vincent Bailey had four shots, with three on net. The shutout was Malak’s fifth of the season, breaking a tie for the team record with teammate Peter Horak (Sr., GK, Española, N.M./Los Alamos HS).
 
The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will conclude their 2011 regular season on Friday, when they visit eighth-ranked Midwestern State. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. MST. – Adam Pitterman

Thesis Defenses/Comprehensive Exams/Challenge

The Mathematics department is offering a MATH119 (College Algebra) challenge exam on Dec. 3. Requirements may be found in the undergraduate catalog, Pg. 29. Interested students should contact Dr. Brian Pasko at 562.2367, JWLA118L, brian.pasko@enmu.edu. The exam will be held Saturday, Dec. 3 from 10 a.m.-noon in JWLA 117.

Science 113 and 113L Challenge Exams: Students need to secure a ‘Challenge Memo’ (forms are available in Roosevelt Hall, Rm 111) from the instructor (Biology: Dr. Cradock; Chemistry: Dr. Yan; Physics: Dr. Andersen). This form has to be signed by the course instructor, department chair (Biology: Dr. Lutnesky; Physical Science Dr. Constantopoulos), and college dean (Dr. Ayala). Students then need to pay the challenge fee ($15 per credit hour; 113 = 3 credit hours; 113L = 1 credit hour) at the Cashier’s Office. Examinees will be required to produce their receipts and memos at the exams – NO RECEIPT and MEMO, NO EXAM!

Students will be examined on the full spectrum of biology/chemistry/geology/physics and should be prepared to answer questions addressing all topics under the respective disciplines. Students should be able to exhibit basic lab skills, including basic data analysis. Study resources for biology are available on closed reserve in the library. THESE EXAMS ARE OFFERED ONCE PER SEMESTER (FALL AND SPRING), NO EXCEPTIONS. NOTE: Once the exams have started no late arrivals will be permitted to enter the exam room – BE ON TIME! Biology 113 and Biology 113L: Saturday, Nov. 12 in S 101. The lecture exam (113) will be from 9am – noon. The lab exam (113L) will be from 2pm – 5pm. The Chemistry 113 challenge will be held on Saturday, October 15. The lecture exam (113) will be from 9 a.m. to noon in PS 217. The theoretical part of the lab exam (113L) will be from 2 pm - 4 p.m. in PS 217.

United Way Facts Clovis Meals on Wheels and Portales Meals on Wheels provide a hot meal to 116 Senior Citizens and shut ins in Clovis and Portales daily.

Every 3rd Tuesday at 7 p.m. the Yam Theatre in downtown Portales will host one band to play for the night.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communicative Arts and Sciences (but not communications department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you have won the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter ina word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.
