“Acting is like playing for adults."- Kristin Kuhlmann
Eastern New Mexico University’s former Health Services director, Kristin Kuhlmann, has stepped into somewhat new territory at ENMU. As of this fall, Ms. Kuhlmann is a full-time assistant professor in nursing. During her time at Health Services, Ms. Kuhlmann was considered resource faculty as she helped design the health peer educator course for the Health and Physical Education program in 2008. Since then she has taught between one and three courses in the fall and spring semesters for nursing. Throughout her career as a practitioner and teacher, Ms. Kuhlmann has wanted to further her education, and is now working on her doctorate degree in nursing from the University of New Mexico. |

“I am now collecting data at ENMU for my dissertation,” said Ms. Kuhlmann. “It is titled “Weight Change in College Freshmen: Personal, Interpersonal, and Situational Influences.”
As she transitions into this new career path, Ms. Kuhlmann finds that one of the biggest challenges is not performing nursing care every day.
“I miss that,” she said. “But on the other hand, it is wonderful to be a mentor and teacher to students who are out there in the ‘front lines’ of nursing, and providing them with additional knowledge and skills that will help each of them become a better nurse.”

One of the changes Ms. Kuhlmann has experienced throughout this transition is the workload that shadows teaching: preparing exams, grading assignments, modifying course content, etc.
“It is labor intensive in a different way than working in the clinic,” she said.
|
In addition to her love of nursing, Ms. Kuhlmann is a playwright and actress. She finds it strangely relaxing.
“Acting is like playing for adults,” said the actress.
Ms. Kuhlmann’s play, “Villa’s Raid on Columbus: The Women’s Chronicle,” was performed in a community theatre. The play is about Poncho Villa, and how he is seen through the eyes of women on both sides of the border.

“The orphanage needs so much more help other than just food. It was tough leaving the children knowing there wasn’t anything we could do for them at the time,” explains De La Rosa.

While there, de la Rosa and Garcia enjoyed spending time with the children and watching how excited they were when the food was brought to them.

“Getting to experience the atmosphere of the orphanage makes me appreciate the opportunities that are brought upon us every day,” said Garcia.
“It makes me thankful for my family and thankful to have a warm place to sleep in, food, and utilities,” explains De La Rosa.
