Retiring Anthropology Professor Staying Involved with Bluegrass

“It was a fairly romantic description of archaeologists hacking through forests and discovering wonderful things.” – Dr. David Batten
Dr. David Batten arrived at Eastern New Mexico University in 1997 with his wife, who had been offered a tenure track position in computer science. Dr. Batten was offered a temporary part-time position in the anthropology department at that time.

Fifteen years later, he now serves as an assistant professor of anthropology, the graduate coordinator for the department, and the advisor for Mu Alpha Nu, the campus anthropology club. He will be retiring at the end of the semester, though he says that he’s not yet leaving the school. “I will be teaching next semester,” Dr. Batten said. “There’s one class that I developed here, Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, and they haven’t yet found anyone who can or wants to take it over.” Dr. Batten holds a bachelor’s degree in forestry from Colorado State University, which he received in 1971. Following that, he said he spent a lot of time having fun, working as a carpenter and living as a ski bum. “After not using my forestry degree for many years, I decided to go back to school for something I was interested in,” he said. He received his master’s and Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico, majoring in anthropology, and focused specifically on archaeology. It was a book that he read in grade school that first sparked his love for anthropology. |

“It was a fairly romantic description of archaeologists hacking through forests and discovering wonderful things,” Dr. Batten said.
Before coming to ENMU in 1997, Dr. Batten said he spent years gaining experience in several states, including Montana, New Mexico , Arizona, and Kansas, as well as three countries: Scotland, Portugal and Germany. One site he remembers fondly is Wupatki National Monument in Colorado.
“It’s a beautiful location with really interesting ruins,” Dr. Batten said.
Upon arriving at ENMU, Dr. Batten said the climate did not surprise him, as he was already used to dusty, Great Plains towns. However, he was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of teaching and education from what he had thought was just a small, regional college.
“The community is one of the friendliest places I’ve ever been,” Dr. Batten said. “The school has been extremely generous, and the anthropology department accepted me quickly and made me feel like I was a part from the first year.”
Doctor Batten said he has no intention of leaving the area yet. In fact, part of his retirement plan is to work on his house. He also is looking forward to hiking in Utah and Colorado as time permits, and he plans on investing more time in music, specifically bluegrass and folk.
“We have really great music friends in town,” Dr. Batten said. “We would miss them if we leave.”
