Educators, Policymakers to Convene
at ENMU on Transforming Education

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) will jointly host a summit on the teaching profession and its impacts on student achievement.

The meeting, “Transforming Education through Effective Teaching,” will be on Friday, April 27, in the Becky Sharp Auditorium in the College of Business Building on the Portales campus, and will include policymakers and staff from state and federal legislatures, as well as teachers, superintendents and other regional leaders in education.

The meeting is slated to cover the links between teacher development and student achievement and will discuss the path to encouraging and supporting educators from around the region to obtain National Board Certification.

“As the nation focuses on building the strongest possible teaching workforce, National Board Certification is the gold standard in affirming excellence in the classroom,” said Dr. Ronald Thorpe, President and CEO of NBPTS.

“These highly qualified teachers are true ‘nation builders,’ and are the educators who are best positioned to lead the ground-up movement our schools need to reach their potential.”

To date, there are 675 National Board Certified Teachers in New Mexico – a number that translates to just under three percent of the state’s public school teaching population.

Certification into state education policy and practice would be absolutely transformational for the state of New Mexico.”

Attending from NBPTS are Dr. Ronald Thorpe, president and CEO; Michelle Accardi, director, State Policy and Advocacy; Andrea Hajek, director, NBCT Engagement; and Emma Parkerson, manager, New Business Development.

Also expected to attend are representatives from the Department of Education and New Mexico Higher Education Department.

Forty-eight superintendents, 30 NBPTS public school teachers, 60 student teachers and all legislators from the eastern side of New Mexico have been invited.

NBPTS is nationally recognized as the source for the highest standards and practices that lead to improved teaching, leading and learning; and several independent studies have shown that students of National Board Certified Teachers exhibit deeper learning outcomes and higher testing achievements than students of non-National Board Certified Teachers.

A voluntary assessment program designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers, and to embed ongoing school improvement in schools nationwide, National Board Certification is achieved through performance-based assessment and testing that takes one to three years to complete.

ENMU to Hosts Percussion Ensemble
Concert and Digital Film Screening

The College of Fine Arts will host the Spring Percussion Ensemble concert and the digital film screening of Waiting on Millie on Monday, April 23, at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building.

It is free and open to the public.

The percussion ensemble will perform pieces from composers Harry Breuer, Lyle Mays Arr. Rutland, Fisher Tull and Dave Hollinden, under the direction of Neil Rutland.

Waiting on Millie is a thesis project created by Jonathan Barr for his master of fine arts in film and media arts degree from Temple University. The ENMU Percussion Ensemble will provide collaborative music, composed by Neil Rutland, and sound effects during the film screening.

“This film was shot in Portales (Woody's Jewelry and Vines Restaurant) with local actors. The score is created and performed by local musicians. In addition to creating a fun, retro happening, one of my goals of this project is to incorporate and involve as many people as possible in the filmmaking process. I hope that the movie is funny, but, more importantly, I hope it is fun,” says Barr.

Actors in the silent film include ENMU students Joseph Ulibarri and Robert Hockaday as well as Greg Erf, Lonzo Lassiter and Joseph Kline.

Percussion Ensemble Spring Concert/Waiting on Millie – You are cordially invited to the Percussion Ensemble Spring Concert and premiere of Waiting on Millie, a short silent comedy by Jon Barr, at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 23, in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building.

The ENMU Percussion Ensemble will perform their Spring Concert. After a brief intermission, Waiting for Millie will be screened with a live performance of an original score with sound effects, composed and conducted by Neil Rutland.

ENMU to Host Santa Fe Opera on April 25

Eastern will host Santa Fe Opera’s annual Spring Opera Tour on Wednesday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building on the Portales campus.

Directed by Kathleen Clawson, two talented singers from the Santa Fe Opera’s Apprentice Singer Program, Ashley Logan and Alan Dunbar, along with SFO Spring Tour music director and pianist Kirk Pavitt, will perform arias and songs, including a short, original piece, “Words and Music.”

The Santa Fe Spring Tour is a project of the Santa Fe Opera’s Education and Community Programs Department.
Following the performance there will be a meet and greet reception with the performers in the lobby of the Music Building.

Ft. Sumner Students Visit ENMU

Four Ft. Sumner High School students and their teacher visited Eastern New Mexico University in Portales on Monday, April 16, to sharpen their broadcasting skills at the campus public broadcasting station, KENW-TV.

The students are (L-R): Kendra Bailey, sophomore camera technician; Emma Moyer, sophomore anchor; Alex Rodriguez, junior audio producer; and Ashley Landreth, junior anchor. Their teacher/advisor is Sharon West.

This four-student team won the State Business Professionals of America News Team competition and will compete in Chicago.

Each team was given two stories at the state competition to create a newscast. The stories were assigned “Dual Enrollment for High School Students” and “Utilization of Technology for Fundraising and Its Effect Between Generations.”

ENMU Home to Baby Alligators

Three baby alligators from the Clovis Zoo are being raised in the Natural History Museum in Roosevelt Hall at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. The alligators will be returned to the zoo in a couple of years.

The largest is called Reap, the intermediate one is Rozilla and the little one is Elvis.

The Natural History Museum is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday and is free and open to the public. For more information, call 575-562-2174 or email marv.lutnesky@enmu.edu.

An alligator is a crocodilian in the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae. There are two living alligator species: the American alligator(Alligator mississippiensis) and the Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis). In addition, several extinct species of alligator are known from fossil remains. Alligators first appeared during the Oligocene epoch about 37 million years ago. – (Thank you to Darren Pollock for the preceding information.)

ENMU Employee Assists with Book

Last year, George Crawford, archaeologist for ENMU's Blackwater Draw Site, helped children's author Anne Weaver and illustrator Matt Celeskey with their new book, "Children of Time." It is about a New Mexican boy and his interest in the story of human evolution. Beginning with an understanding of the Clovis site at ENMU and reaching back in time to the earliest humans in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

It is available from University of New Mexico Press and is suitable for young teen readers.

Songwriter Shares Green Experience and Music at ENMU for Earth Week

Touring songwriter, Gabrielle Louise, will visit the ENMU Portales campus on Monday, April 23, to share her music as well as her knowledge of alternative transportation with a live concert and a sustainability presentation to follow. Both events will be held on the ENMU grounds at the Campus Union Building as part of an entire Earth Day celebration and they are sponsored by the Associated Students Activities Board and Sodexo Food Services.

The concert kicks off at noon on the CUB's Dallan Sanders Memorial Plaza. The presentation begins at 2 p.m in the CUB's Sandia Room. The events are free and open to the public.

Louise and her tour manager, Chris Garre, will share real-life experiences with various bio-fuels as well as the nuts and bolts, including conversions from petroleum to alternative fuel-powered systems.

Gabrielle Louise is a contemporary songwriter, musician and environmentalist. She grew up among the panoramic vistas of Colorado and was born into a family that placed a high value on caring for the Earth. Those values have carried over into her career path as a songwriter and musician. While touring thousands of miles from coast to coast, Louise made a commitment to reduce her carbon footprint through the use of sustainable transportation for the majority of her travels. From her motivations to her extensive research and hands-on experience with alternative fuel resources, she developed a presentation that she shares to inspire thought and action for a healthier planet, especially during Earth Week.

When Gabrielle Louise is not sharing her environmental experiences, she is touring to share her original music. Her music is anchored deeply in folk, but undeniably drawn to rich melodic adventurism. Unafraid to take a random musical escapade in the name of inspiration, Gabrielle is at one moment folkie and ethereal, the next moment a smoky jazz chanteuse and she delivers with a warm, inviting appeal that showcases her soulful and sultry voice. She is currently working on production for her sixth CD release.

ENMU Business Affairs is pleased to announce that Joann Martinez is the new Director of Accounting and Student Accounts. She started out at ENMU as a work study student and has earned her associate of science degree, bachelor of university studies with an emphasis in accounting and a bachelor's degree in business administration with an emphasis in CIS.

Prior to her being named as the Director of Accounting and Student Accounts, she held the position of Grant Accountant. She is extremely knowledgeable in Banner, accounting and computer technology.

ENMU grad Lee Ann Hutchins is Curry County's new finance director. Ms. Hutchins assumes a post vacated earlier this year by Mark Lansford. Her annual salary is $54,657.

She has 24 years experience in accounting and worked most recently as controller and human relations director for Clovis Metal Buildings Inc.

Ms. Hutchins holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Eastern New Mexico University with a major in accounting.

Prior to working for Clovis Metal Buildings, she was the team lead in the accounting department and plant accountant for ENMR Plateau Telecommunications. She also worked as controller and human relations manager for DairiConcepts in Portales. – Clovis News-Journal

Recycled Materials Accepted on April 23 – The ENMU Recycling Event is coming to campus. We will be accepting aluminum and tin to recycle. Now is the time to save those empty cans to bring to the event. There will be live music performed by The Gabrielle Louise Show as well as food and a lot of fun.

Bloodborne Pathogens Safety Meeting on April 24 – There will be a Safety Meeting on Bloodborne Pathogens. This safety meeting is open to anyone who would like to attend. Bloodborne Pathogens training is required yearly for all personnel who work with or around blood. The meeting will be at 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, at the College of Business Room 104 (Becky Sharp Auditorium) or Wednesday, April 25, at 9:45 a.m. in the College of Business Room 104.

Assistant Professor of Statistics Candidate on April 23 – Please join the Department of Mathematical Sciences for a presentation by Ismael Talke, a candidate for the assistant professor of statistics position. Mr. Talke's presentation will be held in JWLA 112 from 1-1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 23.

NUMBER THEORETIC METHODS (NTMs) IN DESIGNING EXPERIMENTS. The main goal of NTMs is to obtain a set of points that are known as a number theoretic net (NT-net). These are sets of uniformly scattered points that are useful in experimental design. A brief introduction to NTM approaches (Quasi-monte carlo methods) in space-filling designs in two dimensional space, and methods of constructing uniformly scattered design points will be presented. Moreover, comparisons between the methods will be made.

Finally, the degree of uniformity will be measured using a metric distance approach and a new measure of discrepancy proposed in this study.

Assistant Professor of Statistics Candidate on April 24 – Please join the Department of Mathematical Sciences for a presentation by Indika Wickramasinghe, a candidate for the assistant professor of statistics position. Mr. Wickramasinghe's presentation will be held in JWLA 203 from 2-2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24.

Saddlepoint approximating the distributions of estimators of a Moving Average Model of Order 1 Saddlepoint approximations are used to estimate distributions of estimators of an MA(1) model. The estimator of the parameter can be expressed as the root of an estimating equation, which is a quadratic form in normal random variables. This is known as quadratic estimating equation (QEE). Several estimators of MA(1) parameter such as the method of moments (MOME), the conditional least squares (CLSE) and the maximum likelihood (MLE) are discussed in here. Saddlepoint approximations of the probability density function (PDF) of MA(1) estimator for MOME,

CLSE and MLE is obtained and compared with their simulated counterparts. Luganni and Rice (1980) formula is used to obtain the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of MA(1) estimator. Distribution comparison of above estimators is conducted with their asymptotic distributions. Finally, probabilities of MLE when the parameter takes ±1 is calculated and compared with the findings of Cryer and Ledolter (1981).

Retreat at Pecos Monastery on June 12-14 – The ENMU Presbyterian Campus Ministry is sponsoring a retreat on June 12-14 at Pecos Monastery (in Pecos, 25 miles east of Santa Fe) titled 'Redeeming the Routines: Finding Fullness of Life in our Everyday World.'

The retreat is being led by the renowned theologian and pastor Dr. Elmer Colyer, professor of theology at Dubuque Theological Seminary. So, take some time off from your busy schedules and routines this summer, and come spend a relaxing 2.5 days in the beauty and quiet of the San Juan Mountains in northern New Mexico, and spend some quality time in reflection and conversation with others about a topic that may change the way you lead your life.

Student Employment for summer

1.       All fall/spring SPAN's (workstudy or student hire) will terminate automatically on May 18th. Students cannot work after May 18th without a summer SPAN.
2.       Summer begins May 19th through June 30th.
3.       All students must be enrolled in at least 3 hours to work during the summer semester.
4.       All student employees will need a summer SPAN.
5.       If the student was awarded workstudy for the fall 2011/spring 2012 aid year they will be classified as student employment, if not they will be student hire.
6.       Summer SPAN's will terminate automatically on June 30th.
7.       Student employees who wish to work after June 30th MUST have a 12/13 FAFSA on file and be enrolled for the fall 2012 semester. Remember they will use their fall 2012 workstudy if they have been awarded if not they will be student hire.
8.       Student employees are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session; 39 hours if working the interims. Interims are the weeks between semesters.
9.       Reminder: A workstudy award is given based on the fall/spring semesters; which is 16 weeks per semester. If a student employee is using their 2012/2013 workstudy award beginning July 1st this will affect their award of 20 hours per week during fall 2012/spring 2013. This will begin counting down their award.
10.   Summer SPAN will be available the week of May 14th.
11.   Summer includes the first four week, second four week, and eight week sessions.

GRE, GMAT and LSAT Prep Courses Being Offered – ENMU’s Distance Education and Outreach office has partnered with The Center of Legal Studies to offer prep courses for the GRE, GMAT and LSAT. All courses are offered six times a year and last seven weeks.

The next available for all three is through June15. The cost is $250 which covers the verbal and quantitative sections of the exams.

Final Exams Schedule – Final Exams are scheduled for the week of May 7. A copy of the exam schedule is available in the spring 2012 print schedule and on the web at http://www.enmu.edu/current-students/final_schedule.html

Please note a correction to the web schedule for two class periods. The final for the 11 a.m. Tuesday/Thursday course is 12:30-2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8. The final for the 12:30 p.m. Tuesday/Thursday course is 2:45-4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8.

Year-End processing Deadlines – June 30 is the fiscal year-end. The following are processing cut-off dates:

Purchase Orders: May 11
Last date for purchase order requisitions to be received in the Business Office. All merchandise must be received by June 29, 2012 or it will be charged to the new fiscal year.

Purchasing Card:
The Business Office suggests that purchases end June 15th to ensure the charges will reflect on the June statement. Statements will be ready to review on Tuesday, June 26th. If you are traveling when the statements are due, please contact the Business Office. Completed statements must be in the Business Office by noon on Wednesday, June 27th. Ruidoso statements will be due the morning of June 28th.

Travel Vouchers: June 29,
All travel for 2011-2012 must be submitted to the Business Office by June 29, 2012. Reimbursement for prior months travel should be submitted for payment before June 1.

Interfunds: July 9
Interfunds for 2011-2012 must be received by the Business Office before July 9. Interfunds received after the 9th will not be processed for payment. Examples of on-campus charges include: Sodexo, housing charges for camps, printing and duplicating charges, Physical Plant charges, etc.

Corrections to Accounts: July 16
Journal Vouchers and Budget Transfers are due in the Business Office by July 16. Any expense transfers between budget lines are also due by July 16.

If You are Retiring This Year – Time is of the Essence: The end of the fiscal year is coming up and we would like to remind those employees who are intending to retire by June 30, 2012, that they need to turn in their application for retirement, along with proof of birth (birth certificate, baptismal certificate, an application for life insurance that has been in force for two or more years, US Census Record or other evidence that is accepted by the ERB) no later than April 30, 2012.

There is a 60-day processing period. Once the ERB receives your application for retirement, they will review your application and send you information containing the final computation of your retirement benefit, a final selection of benefit and direct deposit information. This information must be returned to the ERB before July 15 in order to be placed on the July payroll.

Web Page Developer Needed – The HSI-STEM grant is looking for someone to design and develop a web page for the HSI-STEM program. This position will have irregular hours with work available on an as-needed basis. If you are interested, contact the HSI-STEM office at 2278.

Endowed Scholarships and Departmental Awards Ceremony on April 24 – On Tuesday, April 24 classes will be dismissed from 3-5 p.m. so that students and faculty may attend the Student Research Conference and the Spring Endowed Scholarship and Department Awards Program. Early afternoon and evening classes will meet as usual. The Scholarships and Department Awards program will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom. Endowed scholarships and department honors will be presented.

Eastern will host the junior recital of Kyleigh Faucett at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 27, in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building.

Eastern will host the junior trumpet recital of Timothy Wegner at 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, at 5 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building.

ENMU Hosts Superstition Art Exhibit

Eastern New Mexico University’s Department of Art will present the national juried illustration exhibit titled Superstition through Friday, April 27 in Runnels Gallery of the Golden Library on the Portales campus.

Runnels Gallery follows the Golden Library’s hours and all exhibits there are free and open to the public.

A closing reception will be held on Friday, April 27 from 5-6:30 p.m. in Runnels Gallery and is free and open to the public.

Social, cultural, political, gender and sexual superstitions are deeply engrained into the lives of many people. The scope and belief of superstitions can be so powerful that they govern people’s daily interactions, practices and choices. The aim of this exhibition is to feature illustrations that offer personal narrative surrounding superstition.

Samoei Becomes Greyhounds First Automatic Qualifier for NCAA Championships

WALNUT, CALIF. — Junior Isaiah Samoei (Eldoret, Kenya/Iowa Western CC) obliterated the Eastern New Mexico University NCAA-era record for the 10,000-meter run and turned in a sixth-place finish in the event, to open competition for the Hounds at the Mt. Sac Relays. The event is being held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

Samoei crossed the finish line with a time of 29:20.11, to become the first ENMU track & field athlete to post automatic qualification for the championships any event. His finished eclipsed the previous record (32:10.94) of Jacob Lozano (Jr., Hobbs, N.M./Hobbs HS), set at the 2010 Lone Star Conference Championships. – Adam Pitterman

Blackmon Joins Greyhound Basketball Team for 2012-13 Season

Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball coach Andrew Helton has announced the signing of Rodney Blackmon (G, 6-0, 160, Los Angeles, Calif./West Los Angeles College) to a National Letter of Intent, to play for the Greyhounds in the upcoming 2012-13 season. Blackmon will be called upon to bolster a roster, which has qualified for the Lone Star Conference tournament in each of the last two seasons.

“Rodney is an extremely quick guard, who can shoot the three and create for others,” said Helton. “He has the ability to play the point and the shooting guard. We felt he was one of the top guards in the California junior college ranks and we are excited to have him as a Greyhound.”

Blackmon averaged 20 points and 5.1 assists per game, for the Wildcats and earned First Team All-Western State Conference, for his efforts. An outstanding shooter, he connected on 46.2 percent (73-158) of his three-point attempts, which enabled him to finish eighth in California community colleges in points per game. – Adam Pitterman

Wilson Adds Peterson for 2012-13 Zia Basketball Season

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University Women’s Basketball Coach Lindsay Wilson has announced the signing of Neesha Peterson (F, 5-11, Palestine, Texas/Dr. John Horn HS) to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Zias, during the 2012-13 season. Peterson will be called upon to bolster a squad, which qualified for the Lone Star Conference tournament for the first time since the 2003-04 season.

Peterson was a two-time first team all-district selection at forward, for Head Coach LeAnn Stephens. A versatile athlete, she also was a middle blocker for the Lady Jag volleyball team. A leader among students, Peterson also was a Jag Leader from 2008-12, a member of the Student Leadership Jag Jam Committee and Student Council. She also earned the Lighthouse Award and was a Senior Leader. – Adam Pitterman

Schultz Has Two Hits in Series Finale at Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS — Senior shortstop Alex Schultz (Tempe, Ariz., Mountain HS/Eastern Arizona College) batted two-for-three with a double, but the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team (12-30; LSC 2-21) dropped the final game of a Lone Star Conference series, to 30th-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville (28-12; LSC 16-8), Sunday afternoon at Nolan Ryan Field. The Javelinas scored the first two runs, on the way to a 6-1 win over the Hounds.

The Javelinas struck first, on back-to-back doubles from Cameron Dulnig and Taylor Taska, to lead off the second inning, and added a second run on a ground out from Cash Barker. The Hounds answered with Shultz’s lead-off double in the top of the third inning. After taking third base on a ground ball from Sam Hedrick (Jr., 3B, Fairfield, Calif./Sacramento City College) , Schultz score on a two-out single from Luis Quiñones (Jr., LF, Las Cruces, N.M./Mayfield HS), to cut Eastern’s deficit in half.

The Hounds managed to get the tying run on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but could not push any runners across the plate to pull even. Texas A&M-Kingsville added an insurance run on a two-out RBI single from Taska in the sixth inning and tacked on three more in the bottom of the eighth frame.

In addition to Schultz’s performance, four Greyhounds had single, including Mitch Wolfe (Sr., 1B, Litchfield Park HS/Agua Fria HS), who extended his hit streak to seven games, with a base hit to center field in the fourth inning. Brandon Devries (Sr., RF, Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS/Lamar CC) and Brooke Brooks (Jr., CF, Elk Grove, Calif. / Sacramento City College) also registered hits for ENMU. Taska batted three-for-four for the Javelinas, with a homer, two runs and two runs batted in. Zach Pettiford earned the win for the Javelinas, scattering six hits over seven innings, with seven strikeouts.

On Friday, the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team will travel to West Texas A&M, to open its final series of the season. The single game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. MDT. – Adam Pitterman

Seniors Shine in Season Softball Finale

PORTALES, NM— On the final day of their LSC series, the Eastern New Mexico University softball team (15-33; LSC 7-20) fell 5-3 in a heartbreaker against Cameron University (17-31; LSC 8-19), on Saturday afternoon at Zia Field. After honoring seniors, Melanie Alderette (Sr., OF, Albuquerque, N.M./ Valley High School/ Luna Community College), Josette Aguirre (Sr., OF, Moriarty, N.M./ Moriarty High School), Cassie Beene (Gr., UT, Seminole, Okla./ Seminole High School), Devin Higgins(Sr., OF, Reno, Nev./ Mc Queen High School/), Emily Livingston (Sr., 3B, Corinth, Texas/ Lake Dallas High School), Kate Medrano (Sr., 1B, Tecumseh, Kan./ Shawnee Heights High School/ Western Texas College), and Sarah Spencer (Sr., OF, Las Cruces, N.M./ Mayfield High School) the Zias played their heart out in a game which determined the final seed for the LSC softball tournament.

The Zias jumped on the Aggies first as Savannah Chavez (Fr., OF, Albuquerque, N.M./ Valley High School) hit a ball to deep right field which scored Higgins for the first run of the game. Cameron responded by plating two runners in the top of the third and fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

With some ground to make up, the Zias pushed across solo runs in the fifth and sixth, compliments of a solo jack by Aurelia Sandoval (Fr., C, Farmington, N.M./ Piedra Vista High School) and an RBI single off the bat of Amanda Lale (Jr., DH, Mesquite, Texas/ Horn HS).

The Aggies recorded one more run and went into the bottom of the seventh up 5-3. Down by two, the Zias put together one final rally. Elizabeth Velasquez (Fr., IF, Las Cruces, N.M./ Las Cruces High School) picked up a two out single, which was followed by a single off the bat of Katie Ramsay (Fr., P/1B, Keller, Texas/ Keller High School), but the Aggie defense was able to make a heads up play and caught the advancing Velasquez to end the game 5-3.

The Zias finished the season with the first ever series win over the Aggies and the first opportunity since 2008 to make the LSC tournament on the last day of regular season play. In the game, Zia seniors accounted for four of the team’s nine hits and two of their three runs. Young gunner, Amy Smith (Fr., P, Pasadena, Texas/ Pasadena Memorial High School) finished her first season with the single season appearance record and was just shy of the most wins since the 2009 season, while Ramsay set a single season record with three saves. In addition, the fleet footed Alderette finished her career with the second most stolen bases of any Zia.

Saiz Breaks School Record at Bryan Clay Invitational

AZUSA, Calif---- Freshman Tyler Saiz (Albuquerque, N.M./Del Norte High School) broke his school record in the 1,500 meter run at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azuza, Calif. Saiz finished seventh in his heat, crossing the line with a time of 3:57.57.
Saiz had previsouly set the record at the Mesa Classic where he ran a 3:59.53.

Wayland Baptist Added to Schedule for Diamond Greyhounds

Eastern New Mexico University baseball coach Chriss Terry has announced that the Greyhounds will play Wayland Baptist on April 10 at 11 a.m. MDT, in Plainview, Texas. The teams met earlier in the season, with Eastern earning a 12-4 victory, in Portales.

As one of the Roswell Public Library’s New Mexico Centennial events, nationally and internationally acclaimed syndicated columnist, author, and speaker Heloise will be appearing at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center on Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m. Sponsored by the Friends of the Roswell Public Library, the Roswell Daily Record, Xcel Energy, and the Chaves County Veterinary Medical Association, Heloise will speak on a topic that is dear to her heart: “Literacy: Make It Fun!”

The program is free and open to the public. However, seating is limited, and no one will be admitted without a ticket. Tickets may be picked up from April 24 through May 14th at two locations: Roswell Public Library, 301 N. Pennsylvania Avenue or Books Again, 404 W. Second Street, during regular hours. People who live outside of Chaves County may call the library, 575-622-7101, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, to reserve tickets that may be picked up at the Civic Center, starting at 6:00 p.m. on the day of the event.

Following her presentation, Heloise will autograph books. A limited number of her latest book will be available for purchase prior to that evening from the Roswell Public Library and Books Again.

Prior to the event, the Friends of the Roswell Public Library and Pecos Flavors Winery will host a wine and cheese reception for an opportunity to meet and visit with Heloise from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Roswell Museum and Art Center. Tickets for the reception are $20, which includes reserved seating for Heloise’s program, and can only be purchased at Books Again from April 21 through May 14.

“Hints from Heloise,” which runs 7 days a week in over 500 newspapers throughout the United States and internationally, has been in syndication for 50 years. It was first written when Heloise’s mother, Heloise Bowles Cruse, decided that she wanted to write a column in a newspaper to help housewives. When she marched to the office of the Honolulu Advertiser to discuss her idea with the editor, she even offered to work for free for 30 days. The editor took a chance, and The Readers’ Exchange column began in 1959. It was such a success by 1961 that Time magazine did an article on Heloise. Later in 1961, King Features Syndicate convinced Heloise to syndicate her column with a new title, Hints from Heloise. When the original Heloise, “Every Housewife’s Friend,” died in 1977, her daughter took over the column and continues to write the column today.

Born in Waco, Texas, Heloise graduated from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, Texas, with a BS in Education and double majors in Business Administration and Mathematics. She has written eleven books, is a Contributing Editor and monthly columnist for Good Housekeeping magazine, appears often on national television and radio, and gives numerous speeches to business and civic organizations. Additionally, Heloise makes frequent appearances to support her charitable efforts for literacy, battered women’s shelters, the American Heart Association, military family support services, and animal-related causes.

ENMU-ROSWELL SPONSORS “VEGGIE VAN” WORKSHOP AND CONCERT

In celebration of Earth Week, ENMU-Roswell will sponsor a special presentation featuring music artist and environmental speaker, Gabrielle Louise on Wednesday, April 25. The free event is open to ENMU-Roswell students and staff, and the public is also invited to attend. The Gabrielle Louise Show has been touring around the country in a van powered by vegetable grease collected for free from restaurants for the past year. Louise’s tour van was converted for this purpose for less than $1000.

Louise will lead a presentation at 10:30 a.m. in the plaza area outside the Performing Arts Center. The presentation will cover the philosophy and how-to of cutting both carbon emissions and travel costs for anyone who drives a car. Louise has traveled more than 50,000 miles across the U.S., including Alaska, in her veggie-fueled van. She will discuss the economic and environmental impact of traveling in a vegetable oil-fueled vehicle, including business and entrepreneurial applications.

Following the presentation, a free lunch will be served to those who attend. Louise will then perform in concert at 1:00 p.m. Louise sings original radio-ready songs that blend folk and Americana with sultry jazz. Live performance video is posted at www.gabriellelouise.com

Bingaman to be Honored at Foundation Banquet, R.S.V.P. by April 24 – U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman will be the guest of honor at the ENMU-Roswell Foundation’s Eleventh Annual Foundation for the Future Banquet on Tuesday, May 1, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center, 912 N. Main St. The annual foundation banquet is an opportunity to raise funds and awareness about the work of the Foundation. The event is also an opportunity to publicly recognize and thank those who have helped to foster the growth of the University.

Bingaman will receive the President’s Distinguished Service Award for his enduring support of ENMU-Roswell. The Diamond Service Award will be presented to the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center Auxiliary, in recognition of the numerous scholarships the organization has awarded to ENMU-Roswell students over the years. Foundation Merit Awards will be presented to two outstanding ENMU-Roswell employees, and two memorial scholarships will be presented to deserving ENMU-Roswell students.

The cost of the luncheon is $60 per person or $450 for a table of eight. Table sponsors receive name recognition in the program and table signage. A corporate sponsorship is also available for $1000. The ENMU-Roswell Theatre Department invites the public to “be our guest” for the spring musical production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast the last two weekends in April. Performances are scheduled April 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. and on April 29 at 2:30 p.m.

On Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m. to noon the New Mexico Humanities Council, Portales Public Library, and Friends of Portales Public Library welcome the community to join them at the Portales Public Library to Celebrate New Mexico’s 100th Birthday. Author Bob Julyan will entertain guests with his rich New Mexico anecdotes from his book, The Place Names of New Mexico.

There will also be an art exhibit “Good Morning New Mexico” on display featuring paintings by Georgie Sichler Bemis, who traveled to New Mexico’s 33 counties and painted scenes from each one. She will discuss how she selected each county scene and recount some of her travel adventures. The display will remain at the Portales Public Library for the month of May.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communication (but not communication department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you win the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter in a word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.
