Steve Blakeley Retiring

Editor's Note: Steve Blakeley, director of University Printing Services, is retiring on Jan. 1, 2013, after almost 25 years at Eastern. The following are some of his first-hand reminisces. (A profile of his wife, Jane Blakeley, director of Purchasing who is also retiring, will run next week.)

Jane and Steve Blakeley: Retiring Together (photo by Patricia Holbrook)
I will be retiring Jan.1, 2013. I will work one-quarter time for at least part of next year to complete the training of Goldie Montgomery, my replacement.
I was responsible for the directing the day-to-day operations of Printing and Duplicating Services at Eastern for the past 24 ½ years.

I have been in printing for the past 41 years. I started working at Bishop’s Printing in Portales when I graduated from high school.
I feel the biggest issues any director or manager has is giving the employees under their direction the tools they need to complete their tasks. This can be a little like herding cats at times but is a really rewarding job.

Steve always had a strict dress code for his office
I am glad to say I am retiring from a position I have always enjoyed. The industry has changed so much over the past 40 years; it has always given me new challenges.
I had a tough transition when I moved from the private sector to the university, but it is I am glad I made due to not having any job-related benefits in the private sector. This is what made it possible for me to retire this year. The transition also made it possible for me to work on my education. Although I did not complete my degree in business I was able to log many hours toward that life goal.

Jane, my wife, and I have both been employees of Eastern for several years and plan to retire at the same time. Jane has been the Director of Purchasing for many years and has been an employee of Eastern for over 28 years. She spent a few years at the Physical Plant before her move to Purchasing.

Steve won a Spirit of Eastern Award for professional employees in 2010
We met almost 30 years ago when we both were working in the private sector. While employed here, Jane and I both have had the privilege of receiving the “Spirit of Eastern” award – an award we both display proudly.
Jane and I plan to do a whole lot more fishing and just traveling around the United States seeing this great country.

ENMU Getting Mention in Wall Street Journal
In 2005, the Monday Memo ran an article about ENMU receiving a donation of scientific instrumentation equipment from ENMU graduate Dr. Gary Calton, who founded several biotech companies. Recently, ENMU received a request from Nicole Hong of the Wall street Journal requesting permission to use part of the article in a piece that she is working on about non-monetary donations to universities.
Here is the original Monday Memo article from 2005:
ENMU Graduate Donates $500,000 of Scientific Equipment to Alma Mater
Date: 7/20/2005
Contact: Wendel Sloan at 575.562.2253
PORTALES–Eastern New Mexico University alumnus Dr. Gary Calton and his wife, Sandra, recently donated a large amount of scientific equipment to the Science Department at Eastern. The estimated value of the equipment totals over $500,000, and includes equipment ranging from beakers to centrifuges and from incubators to ultra-freezers.
Dr. Manuel Varela, associate professor of biology, says, "It was likeChristmas day opening up the boxes and distributing the equipment to very grateful people. Dr. Calton is a very kind and generous human being."
Dr. Calton has enjoyed a very successful career and has many scientific inventions to his credit. He earned a bachelor of science in chemistry in 1965 as well as a masterof science in chemistry in 1968 from ENMU. He is also president of the biotechnology company AuRx, and has served as president of Calwood Nutritionals, which developed Nutramine, a nutritional supplement formulated for kidney disease patients and those with the early signs of kidney disease.
A Mexican pharmaceutical company just licensed the AuRx technology which provides an "effective cure" for genital herpes. His wife, Sandra, earned her bachelor of science in biology at Eastern in 1967. She is a CPA and serves as vice president and chief financial officer of all of these companies.
Among the equipment donated, some of the more notable items are incubators, used for growing cultures, a thermocycler, used to analyze DNA, and anultra-freezer, which can cool to temperatures of -80 Celsius. According to Dr. Varela, the ultra-freezer is quite a gift in itself because the science department can now store tissue and bacterial samples. "This is a great item to receive. It is very expensive. Without this donation, it would have been a long time until the university could have afforded equipment like this."
Dr. Varela saysthat this is a gift everyone will benefit from. "Molecular and cellular biologists will receive the bulk of the equipment, but the microbiologists as well as organic and biochemists will benefit aswell."
Dr. Varela adds, "This equipment will allow us to do experiments that we have not been able to dobefore. It also expands our teaching and research capabilities, especially in the area of immunity. This equipment makes us capable of research that other universities in New Mexico can do in the area of biomedical research, and may even include some experiments that they cannot perform."
Dr. Calton also has roots in eastern New Mexico. Raised in Portales, his mother and father founded Calton Furniture, the family business his brother and sister still run today. His brother, Bill Calton, retired from Eastern after serving as a professor of mathematics for over 30 years.
Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president, sums up the magnanimous donation. "The donation of this equipment will help us move forward, especially in the area of faculty research. We are very grateful to Dr. Calton for his very generous donation."
Editor's Note: Dr. Varela recently sent the following message to Dr. Calton about the impending Wall Street Journal article.
Dear Dr. Calton,
You will be greatly interested to know that your equipment donation to Eastern is still making positive influences, not only in our research productivity, of course—see attachments for updates—but also more recently in a novel way: the Wall Street Journal is preparing a story about non-monetary donations to universities, and your 2005 donation to Eastern was noticed by them.
Apparently, you are paving the way for others: readers of the WSJ.
We greatly appreciate your generosity as we have put your equipment to good use.
Gratefully yours as always,
Manny Varela

It is that time of the year when Eastern students get to take a break from school to relax and spend some time with their loved ones. Here are what a few ENMU students are going to be doing over the break.
Jeraldine Henio, 2011 ENMU Miss Native American, said, “I’m kicking on winter break in Las Vegas, Nevada.”
She and her family are going to watch her brother, Jarrell Henio, rope in the World Series of Team Roping finals on Sunday, Dec. 9.
“Depending on how he does there will determine how long we’ll be staying there,” said the animal lover.
The Ramah High School graduate has spent New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas before.
“Maybe this year we will spend New Year’s Eve there again,” said Jeraldine.

I'esha Wallace
I’esha Wallace, graduate of Lubbock Estacado High School, is going to help raise money at her church, Hope Deliverance, in Lubbock to give to a foundation that gives children gifts.
“I felt the need to give back,” said I’esha. “Growing up I never had a whole bunch of things.”
She participated in this year’s Hanging of the Greens, which was her first time buying a gift for a child.
“It was a good feeling to watch the children open their gifts,” said the Lubbock local.
She has helped Hope Deliverance since she was little with her grandmother, but was too young to purchase a gift herself.
“Give onto those and you will be blessed,” said I’esha.

Mikael Wisniewiski, a Los Angeles Angels baseball fan, is getting a head start on her studies during the winter break.
“I’m probably going to study for the second semester of some of my classes which use the same textbook,” said the biology major.
She is also going to visit some family in California for about two weeks.
“My family and I are going to go to Anaheim and then plan on spending some time in Laguna Hills with my uncle and cousins,” said Mikael. “I’m looking forward to seeing my twin cousins because I haven’t seen them in over a year.

Communication Services won first place in this year's Door Decorating Contest, sponsored by Communication Services. "We used sort of a minimalist style, enhanced with human animatrons," said chief decorator Wanda Newberry. Serving as animatrons were (L-R) Wanda Newberry, Wendel Sloan, Minh Tran, Jim Dodson and Scott Kendall. No runner-up awards were presented since there were no other entries. "We forgot to publicize this year's contest," admitted Sloan. (photo by Kristin Tivis) |
