Editor's Note: Jane Blakeley, director of Purchasing, will join her husband, Steve, director of University Printing Services, in officially retiring on Jan. 1, 2013. In the following interview with Monday Memo editor Wendel Sloan, she reflects on her time at Eastern.
Q. What were the main duties of your job?
Represent, direct and perform all Purchasing aspects for the University.
Q. What did you enjoy most about your job, and what were the biggest challenges?
The most enjoyable thing about this job is the people I got to work with and meet. There are a lot of nice people on this campus and they are the ones that made it all worthwhile.
One of the biggest challenges for me was the many hats I had to wear. Yes, one of my hats was called "Purchasing." I had to insure everything was procured correctly. It's more involved than most people think, especially when you have to follow State laws.
It not just getting a request, picking up the phone and placing an order. My other hats of responsibility were in receiving, stores, copiers and insurance. I can honestly say I didn't get bored over here. I've even had to learn to operate a forklift. Coming from a farming background this wasn't hard to do. It was actually fun and I didn't mind helping out when needed.

Q. When did you arrive at ENMU, and what were the different positions you held?
I arrived at ENMU in 1984. I was hired as a receptionist at Physical Plant. I remember it well. First day I was suppose to start I got the flu. Att hat time, Vickie Brisco was my supervisor.
During my six-year stay at Physical Plant, I was move up to a Department/Division Secretary. It really was a great place to work. Then in 1990, I got a job as "Buyer I" under what ENMU called a work program in the Purchasing Department. As I learned my responsibilities I was moved up the ladder.
In 1991 became a "Buyer II" and then Assistant Purchasing Agent in 1993. After my boss, Joyce Lowery, left, I became the Purchasing Agent for the University in 1999. Later on in 2001 the Personnel Department (that is what they were called back then) decided to change my title to Director of Purchasing.
Q. Where were you born, and what was your life like growing up, including family?
Born in Roswell on a small farm that my mom and dad worked. I was one of eight children. We didn't have much, but we weren't missing anything. I wouldn't trade growing up the way I did for anything.
Q. Tell us how you met your spouse?
I came back to ENMU to complete my master degree in 1983. Like most students you have to work and go to school. So I applied at a local business where my future husband was part-owner. I guess he liked what he saw and hired me. Funny, I never did get my master's degree, but I found a great guy and married him!
Q. Where did you graduate from high school?
I graduated from Roswell High School in 1976. It was the Bicentennial year. Our gowns were black, but with red, white and blue. Really cool!
Q. Where did you graduate from college?
I graduated in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in education from ENMU.
Q. What are your retirement plans?
I have a lot of unfinished projects at home. I am not in any hurry to do them either. Steve and I plan to travel and see the United States.
Q. After retirement, what will be your priority?
Family is number one. Spending more time with them would be good.

Q. What have you valued most, and what will you miss most, about working at ENMU?
What I won't miss is all of this work. I'm proudly going to leave that to the next director.
I value and want to thank all of the individuals I've had the opportunity to work with and meet during my 29 years at Eastern. It's been a pleasure.

In a competition sponsored by Admin. 205 of Business Affairs, Room 205 in the Administration Building (strangely enough) won first place in "Office Decorating." Office employees are Kenny Prince, Joann Martinez, Sherry Stewart and Terri Doerr. "After seeing in last week's Monday Memo that Communication Services won first place for "Door Decorating" in a competition that they sponsored themselves – and were the only entrant because they did not publicize it – I thought, 'Hey, we should do the same thing,'" said Ms. Doerr. For their first-place victory, the Monday Memo awarded Admin. 205 a link to a web site where they can download pizza coupons. |
