Rules for Submitting Announcements

Announcements can be submitted to the Monday Memo by University community members (employees, students, retirees and alumni), and must be received by Thursday at noon for the following Monday. To submit an item, use the Submit Announcements form to the lower right, or e-mail monday.memo@enmu.edu. Announcements can only be accepted from off-campus groups that are non-profit. The Monday Memo is a weekly electronic newsletter published for the faculty and staff of Eastern New Mexico University.

Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Dr. Susan Fulgham have had a paper published in Educational Technology- Vol LII, No 4 in the July-August 2012 issue.

Dr. Shaughnessy also reviewed Marc Prensky’s latest book in that issue.

Dr. Donald Elder III was named Volunteer of the Month by the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce on June 26. His award citation reads "In recognition of valuable public service and community leadership for your services as the voice of our community."

Dr. Cherylann Dozier’s paper, “Religious private high school students' perceptions of effective teaching," has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Instructional Pedagogies.

ENMU Closed on Wednesday – ENMU will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, for Independence Day. The campus will reopen on Thursday, July 5, for its regular hours.

Greyhound Arena Construction –The lobby of Greyhound Arena will be closed due to construction for three weeks. The construction will start Monday July 9 and will reopen Monday July 30. Please use the east entrances during this time. The southeast entrance is football, women’s basketball, track and field and classroom 2, Rodeo and Sports Information. The middle two east entrances are Athletic Office, HPE Offices, Events, Basketball, Volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer, Intramurals and Athletic Training facility. The northeast entrance is classrooms 7 through 11.

Community Services Center’s Food Pantry – The Community Services Center has a Food Pantry available. Each household can receive two bags of canned food from the food pantry, regardless of income, twice per year. In order to receive food from the food pantry, individuals need to bring in a valid, current picture id (issued by the DMV), and a bill that has been mailed to their address with their name on it. No photocopies will be accepted!

Ronny Cox Performing Music Concert at ENMU on August 30 – ENMU graduate, actor and songwriter Ronny Cox will perform a concert at ENMU at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 in the Campus Union Building Ballroom.

Born in Cloudcroft, N.M., and raised in Portales, Ronny has dedicated his life to the arts. He has acted in several popular films, including ,“Robocop” and also the TV series, “Stargate,” "Desperate Housewives," "Murder She Wrote," etc.

From rock 'n roll in high school to folk after college. Ronny is sure to have you dancing in your seat. Entertaining and energetic, this is a performance you will not want to miss.

Time for New Parking Decals – The new parking decals for faculty, staff and students are available at the ENMU Police Department. Your current decals are set to expire on Friday, June 1. If you want to get a head start on the fall 2012 semester you can stop by the police department and pick one up. Decals are provided free of charge and you can register as many vehicles as you would like.

The ENMU Police Department will start issuing citations on Monday, Sept. 10 for "Failure to Register" and "Expired Registration". Warning citations for these violations will begin on Monday, Aug. 20, 2012. "Community Member" decals are also available at the police department. If you have individuals who frequent facilities on campus and are not students, faculty or staff they can apply for a community member decal at the police department. The decals are free of charge and will be valid for a period of one year until June 1, 2013. After that they will need to apply for a new decal.

All students, faculty and staff are required to register their vehicles to be in compliance with standing University policy and procedures.

Year-End processing Deadlines – June 30 is the fiscal year-end. The following are processing cut-off dates:

Purchasing Card:
The Business Office suggests that purchases end June 15 to ensure the charges will reflect on the June statement. Statements will be ready to review on Tuesday, June 26. If you are traveling when the statements are due, please contact the Business Office. Completed statements must be in the Business Office by noon on Wednesday, June 27. Ruidoso statements will be due the morning of June 28.

Travel Vouchers: June 29
All travel for 2011-12 must be submitted to the Business Office by June 29, 2012. Reimbursement for prior months travel should be submitted for payment before June 1.

Interfunds: July 9
Interfunds for 2011-12 must be received by the Business Office before July 9. Interfunds received after the 9 will not be processed for payment. Examples of on-campus charges include: Sodexo, housing charges for camps, printing and duplicating charges, Physical Plant charges, etc.

Corrections to Accounts: July 16
Journal Vouchers and Budget Transfers are due in the Business Office by July 16. Any expense transfers between budget lines are also due by July 16.

Request for Payment Form Revised – The "Request for Payment" form was revised by Accounts Payable in December 2011 to meet FERPA requirements. Please use the form that is available on the Intranet and dispose of any prior forms you have. Any version, other than the current form, will be returned back to the department for reprocessing effective Monday, March 5.

Publication and Web Request Form

Communication Services has a new Publication and Web Request Form. For every project, big or small or for simple updates, please use the new form system which allows for tracking of the progress of each project by clients.

This form can be found on the ENMU website under the Faculty/Staff link, Branding and Identity: http://www.enmu.edu/faculty-staff/ or by going to www.enmu.edu/pubrequest.

To ensure the quality of your project, please allow a minimum of:

2-3 weeks for printed publications and
3-5 business days for normal Web update requests.

Please note that complex projects may take longer. For an estimate of your project timeline, please email communication.services@enmu.edu or call 562.2133.

After submitting this form, you should receive an email confirmation with instructions on how to track the progress of your project. If you do not receive a confirmation email after 30 minutes, please check your junk mail inbox or contact Jim Dodson at 562.2133 or jim.dodson@enmu.edu to ensure your project has been accepted.

Print Jobs Need to Go Through University Printing Services – This is a friendly reminder that all print jobs must be routed through the University print shop. The University print shop will make the determination as to whether the print job will be done in-house or sent off campus.

Harney Announces Zia Signings for Upcoming Season

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University Cross Country and Track and Field Coach has announced the signing of four athletes to compete for the Zias in the upcoming 2012-13 season. Last year, the cross country team turned in its first-ever top-ten finish in the NCAA Division II South Central Regionals, while a pair of track & field athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Amber Saiz (Belen, N.M./Belen HS), Andrea Whittman (Hobbs, N.M./Hobbs HS), Farrah Hood (Gallup, N.M./Gallup HS) and Jherica Rhodes (Hobbs, N.M./Hobbs HS) will be looked at to continue the steady improvement the program has shown over the last few seasons.

Saiz won the state championship in the 800 -meter run, with a time of 2:16.97. She also earned all-state honors, with a time of 5:16, in the one-mile run.

Whittman’s time of 11:51 earned a fourth-place finish at the state championships. She also finished third in the one-mile run, with a time of 5:26.

Hood was a state qualifier, with a personal-best time of 12:30.02 in the two-mile run, while Rhodes was a state qualifier in the 800-meter run, with a personal-best time of 2:23.67.

The Eastern New Mexico University cross country teams will open the 2012 season, with the Midwestern State University Stampede. The event, in Wichita Falls, Texas, will be held on Thursday, August 30th. – Adam Pitterman

Defensive Driving Course – In order to drive a University vehicle, an Enterprise vehicle, or a leased vehicle for the University, the State of New Mexico requires you to have completed the six-hour National Safety Council Defensive Driving Certification program. Daniela is a child who has been through a lot, and having a loving, stable and accepting home would be invaluable for her. Daniela sees herself as a protector and is known to stand up for those she views as not able to defend themselves, including some of her classmates. She can be shy and reserved at first, but once she is comfortable she really opens up. Daniela basks in the glow of affection and acceptance and takes great pride in making others happy.

In school, Daniela works best in a smaller classroom setting with more personal attention. She does well in school and enjoys the interaction and challenge, although she does not perform at grade level.

Daniela prefers water to soda, if you can believe that! She is not a picky eater and even enjoys her veggies, but also likes "meat and potatoes" and has a weakness for the occasional crisp pickle.

Daniela would do best in a family that would understand the challenges and blessings she would bring to them. She would do well with children older than she is, and who would be open to the new addition to their home.

Support for 'Little Bear' Fire

Hello United Way Friends,

It has been excruciating watching the devastating footage of charred ruined homes and blazing mountainsides in Ruidoso. Over 250 structures have been lost, many of them permanent homes for families and individuals.

Emergency responders are on the scene and American Red Cross is providing shelters, food, etc while waiting for the chance to assess the longterm effects on families. In this time before all the details are known, Ruidoso is preparing for the Longterm recovery of its community. FEMA is sending in a team to help Ruidoso Community Leaders put a organization in place for Longterm recovery (which will take months or even years) for the families involved.

If you would like to support this RECOVERY from distraught homelessness, please consider making a MONETARY donation to the Response Organization (Red Cross, etc) of your choice or if you wish you may give through United Way of Eastern New Mexico. A "Little Bear Fire Donation" through United Way will be forwarded 100% to the Longterm Recovery Committee in Ruidoso once it is established.

In 2007, donations from all over the state poured into Clovis to help our Tornado Victims. Those precious gifts allowed our local recovery committee to help over 100 families regain their footing with over 18 months of effort and coordination. One amazing way we can honor those givers is to "pay it forward" to our neighbors in Ruidoso.

Your DOLLARS are the best gift because items that get sent sometimes swamp the community with stuff that may or may not be needed at the moment. Your DOLLARS always provide the affected community with the power to procure the supplies they need most.

Notice To Public from Constructors, Inc.
US 70/1st and 2nd Street Portales, NM Pavement Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Project

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) has begun pavement rehabilitation work on a 2.64 mile section of US 70 and 1st and 2nd Street between miler marker 421 to 423, approximately.

The scope of the project will include but is not limited to: Earthwork, mill and inlay, roadway reconstruction, ADA, curb and gutter, concrete drivepads, erosion control, lighting, signals, signing, striping, traffic control, landscaping, and misc. construction as needed.

Constructors, Inc. is the contractor for the project and will begin work in the vicinity of University Drive and work will proceed mainly east on US 70/2nd Street towards downtown Portales.

Work is scheduled to be completed late summer 2013. During that time, a single-lane closure will be in place on 1st and 2nd Street Monday - Friday. Motorists are asked to watch for construction personnel working in the area, observe temporary lane closures, and reduce speed while work is taking place.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communication (but not communication department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you win the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter in a word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.
