Rules for Submitting Announcements

Announcements can be submitted to the Monday Memo by University community members (employees, students, retirees and alumni), and must be received by Thursday at noon for the following Monday. To submit an item, use the Submit Announcements form to the lower right, or e-mail monday.memo@enmu.edu. Announcements can only be accepted from off-campus groups that are non-profit. The Monday Memo is a weekly electronic newsletter published for the faculty and staff of Eastern New Mexico University.

ENMU to Offer Master's Degree in Nursing

Eastern New Mexico University has been approved by the State of New Mexico to begin a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with an emphasis in Nursing Education. The 36-credit-hour online program will begin in the spring of 2013.

ENMU began working on the new degree after a two-year involvement in the New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium (NMNEC). NMNEC is implementing a statewide concept-based curriculum to increase the number of New Mexico nurses at the BSN level. Another intended result is to increase the number of qualified nursing instructors in New Mexico to provide for the future educational needs of New Mexico’s nursing workforce.

“This will be accomplished by establishing partnerships between local community colleges and their universities that will result in the availability of a baccalaureate-level curriculum in these communities,” said Leslie Paternoster, director of ENMU’s nursing program. “Having a master’s degree in nursing education will allow nurses to work in the education field of nursing. Nurses who have a MSN can teach in both associate and baccalaureate degree programs. MSN-prepared nurses can also move up into management position in care facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes and clinics.”

ENMU faculty began work on the proposal for the MSN program in November 2011. The program proposal received letters of support from all New Mexico universities and a large percentage of the state community colleges.

“There is an expected shortage of nursing instructors at institutions of higher education in New Mexico by 2020, and we are already seeing this shortage. In order for more nurses to be produced to help with the projected nursing shortage, more faculty need to be developed to educate them,” said Paternoster.

The University of New Mexico is the only other school in New Mexico that offers a master’s in nursing education.

“With the expected shortage of nurses, we felt that ENMU could offer this degree to help staff the nursing programs in the state,” said Paternoster. “The nursing faculty at ENMU value the MSN in nursing education as we are part of the New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium and feel it is our role to help the other nursing programs in the state to fill their faculty needs. Offering this degree will allow New Mexico nurses an education setting that is in New Mexico. A lot of nurses on the east side of the state go to Texas institutions to obtain their MSN degree.”

According to Paternoster, ENMU will accept 15 students in the spring of 2013, and will offer two classes a semester in the spring, summer and fall.

ENMU Grad Plays with Lt. Dan Band

Mitch Paliga, an Eastern New Mexico University alumnus, has experienced great success as a professional musician, currently playing saxophone in the Lt. Dan Band – actor Gary Sinise's band named after his Forrest Gump character.

Saxophonist Mitch Paliga, actor Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band perform at the 6th annual "CSI: NY" mid-season bash on Oct. 29, 2010 in Studio City, Calif.

Paliga, who lives in Chicago, attended ENMU from 1981-85. “It prepared me. It’s not too small and it’s not too big.”

One of Paliga’s favorite professors was Dr. Duane Bowen, his private saxophone teacher who was not only a great music teacher, but a great “life teacher.”

He made many lifelong friends at ENMU.

Paliga plays the tenor and soprano saxophones for the Lt. Dan Band. Playing in the band allows him to travel all over the country world, from Alaska and Hawaii to Kuwait and Afghanistan.

The band plays over 40 shows a year, mostly for charity events. “It is a great experience” says Paliga.

Aside from playing in the Lt. Dan Band, Paliga is also an adjunct professor of jazz studies at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill., and North Central College in Naperville, Ill.

Paliga said that he misses ENMU and that he hopes to come visit one day soon.

ENMU instructor of communication and KENW-TV news director Janet Bresenham was invited to write and submit another guest editorial for publication in the Amarillo Globe News Sunday edition.

The editorial focuses on the need for more attentive driving to keep motorists, cyclists and pedestrians safer. She wrote this editorial in response to the recent death of another cyclist in the region.

Defensive Driving Course – In order to drive a University vehicle, an Enterprise vehicle, or a leased vehicle for the University, the State of New Mexico requires you to have completed the six-hour National Safety Council Defensive Driving Certification program. The six-hour course will be offered Tuesday, July 10 at 1:10 p.m. The class will be held at the College of Business, Room 117. For more information please call the Physical Plant at 562.2511.

Greyhound Arena Construction –The lobby of Greyhound Arena will be closed due to construction for three weeks. The construction will start Monday July 9 and will reopen Monday July 30. Please use the east entrances during this time. The southeast entrance is football, women’s basketball, track and field and classroom 2, Rodeo and Sports Information.

The middle two east entrances are Athletic Office, HPE Offices, Events, Basketball, Volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer, Intramurals and Athletic Training facility. The northeast entrance is classrooms 7 through 11.

Ronny Cox Performing Music Concert at ENMU on August 30 – ENMU graduate, actor and songwriter Ronny Cox will perform a concert at ENMU at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 in the Campus Union Building Ballroom.

Born in Cloudcroft, N.M., and raised in Portales, Ronny has dedicated his life to the arts. He has acted in several popular films, including ,“Robocop” and also the TV series, “Stargate,” "Desperate Housewives," "Murder She Wrote," etc.

From rock 'n roll in high school to folk after college. Ronny is sure to have you dancing in your seat. Entertaining and energetic, this is a performance you will not want to miss.

Time for New Parking Decals – The new parking decals for faculty, staff and students are available at the ENMU Police Department. Your current decals expired on Friday, June 1. If you want to get a head start on the fall 2012 semester you can stop by the police department and pick one up. Decals are provided free of charge and you can register as many vehicles as you would like.

The ENMU Police Department will start issuing citations on Monday, Sept. 10 for "Failure to Register" and "Expired Registration." Warning citations for these violations will begin on Monday, Aug. 20, 2012. "Community Member" decals are also available at the police department. If you have individuals who frequent facilities on campus and are not students, faculty or staff they can apply for a community member decal at the police department. The decals are free of charge and will be valid for a period of one year until June 1, 2013. After that they will need to apply for a new decal.

All students, faculty and staff are required to register their vehicles to be in compliance with standing University policy and procedures.

Year-End processing Deadlines – The following are processing cut-off dates:

Interfunds: July 9
Interfunds for 2011-12 must be received by the Business Office before July 9. Interfunds received after the 9 will not be processed for payment. Examples of on-campus charges include: Sodexo, housing charges for camps, printing and duplicating charges, Physical Plant charges, etc.

Corrections to Accounts: July 16
Journal Vouchers and Budget Transfers are due in the Business Office by July 16. Any expense transfers between budget lines are also due by July 16.

Request for Payment Form Revised – The "Request for Payment" form was revised by Accounts Payable in December 2011 to meet FERPA requirements. Please use the form that is available on the Intranet and dispose of any prior forms you have. Any version, other than the current form, will be returned back to the department for reprocessing effective Monday, March 5.

Publication and Web Request Form

Communication Services has a new Publication and Web Request Form. For every project, big or small or for simple updates, please use the new form system which allows for tracking of the progress of each project by clients.

This form can be found on the ENMU website under the Faculty/Staff link, Branding and Identity: http://www.enmu.edu/faculty-staff/ or by going to www.enmu.edu/pubrequest.

To ensure the quality of your project, please allow a minimum of:

2-3 weeks for printed publications and
3-5 business days for normal Web update requests.

After submitting this form, you should receive an email confirmation with instructions on how to track the progress of your project. Runners, jumpers, and throwers of all ages are invited to TNT – Thursday Nite Track to be held every Thursday through Aug. 9, at the RHS Track from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Join for a FREE opportunity to RUN, JUMP and THROW in the cool of the evening where novice athletes can be instructed by experienced coaches and elite athletes can hone their skills. Each event will be timed and scored with ribbons awarded during the last two weeks of the program. Parents/Guardians must sign a one-time permission/waiver form for participants under age 18.

Community Services Center’s Food Pantry – The Community Services Center has a Food Pantry available. Each household can receive two bags of canned food from the food pantry, regardless of income, twice per year. In order to receive food from the food pantry, individuals need to bring in a valid, current picture id (issued by the DMV), and a bill that has been mailed to their address with their name on it. No photocopies will be accepted!

Notice To Public from Constructors, Inc.
US 70/1st and 2nd Street Portales, NM Pavement Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Project

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) has begun pavement rehabilitation work on a 2.64 mile section of US 70 and 1st and 2nd Street between miler marker 421 to 423, approximately.

The scope of the project will include but is not limited to: Earthwork, mill and inlay, roadway reconstruction, ADA, curb and gutter, concrete drivepads, erosion control, lighting, signals, signing, striping, traffic control, landscaping, and misc. construction as needed.

Constructors, Inc. is the contractor for the project and will begin work in the vicinity of University Drive and work will proceed mainly east on US 70/2nd Street towards downtown Portales.

Work is scheduled to be completed late summer 2013. During that time, a single-lane closure will be in place on 1st and 2nd Street Monday - Friday. Motorists are asked to watch for construction personnel working in the area, observe temporary lane closures, and reduce speed while work is taking place.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communication (but not communication department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you win the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter in a word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.
