CPR Training Sessions at ENMU on June 23 –KOAT-TV, the New Mexico Heart Institute and Eastern New Mexico University will host non-certification CPR training sessions in Room 2 of Greyhound Arena at ENMU in Portales on Saturday, June 23. 

The training is free and open to the public.  Food and drinks will be provided to volunteers.

After viewing a short training video, participants will have the opportunity to perform hands-only compressions on mannequins and learn how to operate an AED.

Participants will need to attend one of the one-hour sessions at 8, 9 and 10 a.m.

The Bank of Clovis has provided 50 mannequins to the nursing department at ENMU for use during the training—and they can also be checked out later.

The ability to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients is crucial. Hispanics currently make up 20 percent of the patient population in the United States. As a Health Care Professional, you do not have to be fluent in Spanish to communicate with your patients, but you do need to know how to communicate with them.

SPANISH 329 is designed to master elemental and basic conversational Spanish so your patients will understand you. Through a simple approach, you will learn basic words and phrases along with multiple drills for mastering key health-related words. At the end of this course you will feel confident communicating with your patients and clients.

Ronny Cox Performing Music Concert at ENMU on August 30 – ENMU graduate, actor and songwriter Ronny Cox will perform a concert at ENMU at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 in the Campus Union Building Ballroom.

Born in Cloudcroft, N.M., and raised in Portales, Ronny has dedicated his life to the arts. He has acted in several popular films, including ,“Robocop” and also the TV series, “Stargate,” "Desperate Housewives," "Murder She Wrote," etc.

From rock 'n roll in high school to folk after college. Ronny is sure to have you dancing in your seat. Entertaining and energetic, this is a performance you will not want to miss.

Time for New Parking Decals – The new parking decals for faculty, staff and students are available at the ENMU Police Department. Your current decals are set to expire on Friday, June 1. If you want to get a head start on the fall 2012 semester you can stop by the police department and pick one up. Decals are provided free of charge and you can register as many vehicles as you would like. 

The ENMU Police Department will start issuing citations on Monday, Sept. 10 for "Failure to Register" and "Expired Registration".  Warning citations for these violations will begin on Monday, Aug. 20, 2012.  "Community Member" decals are also available at the police department. If you have individuals who frequent facilities on campus and are not students, faculty or staff they can apply for a community member decal at the police department. The decals are free of charge and will be valid for a period of one year until June 1, 2013.  After that they will need to apply for a new decal. 

All students, faculty and staff are required to register their vehicles to be in compliance with standing University policy and procedures.

Year-End processing Deadlines – June 30 is the fiscal year-end.  The following are processing cut-off dates:

Purchasing Card:
The Business Office suggests that purchases end June 15 to ensure the charges will reflect on the June statement. Statements will be ready to review on Tuesday, June 26. If you are traveling when the statements are due, please contact the Business Office. Completed statements must be in the Business Office by noon on Wednesday, June 27.   Ruidoso statements will be due the morning of June 28.

Travel Vouchers:  June 29
All travel for 2011-12 must be submitted to the Business Office by June 29, 2012. Reimbursement for prior months travel should be submitted for payment before June 1.
 
Interfunds:  July 9
Interfunds for 2011-12 must be received by the Business Office before July 9. Interfunds received after the 9 will not be processed for payment. Examples of on-campus charges include:  Sodexo, housing charges for camps, printing and duplicating charges, Physical Plant charges, etc.  

Corrections to Accounts:  July 16
Journal Vouchers and Budget Transfers are due in the Business Office by July 16.  Any expense transfers between budget lines are also due by July 16.

Request for Payment Form Revised – The "Request for Payment" form was revised by Accounts Payable in December 2011 to meet FERPA requirements.  Please use the form that is available on the Intranet and dispose of any prior forms you have.  Any version, other than the current form, will be returned back to the department for reprocessing effective Monday, March 5.

Communication Services has a new Publication and Web Request Form.  For every project, big or small or for simple updates, please use the new form system which allows for tracking of the progress of each project by clients.

This form can be found on the ENMU website under the Faculty/Staff link, Branding and Identity: http://www.enmu.edu/faculty-staff/  or by going to www.enmu.edu/pubrequest.

To ensure the quality of your project, please allow a minimum of:

• 2-3 weeks for printed publications and
• 3-5 business days for normal Web update requests.

Please note that complex projects may take longer. For an estimate of your project timeline, please email communication.services@enmu.edu or call 562.2133.

After submitting this form, you should receive an email confirmation with instructions on how to track the progress of your project. If you do not receive a confirmation email after 30 minutes, please check your junk mail inbox or contact Jim Dodson at 562.2133 or jim.dodson@enmu.edu to ensure your project has been accepted.

Southern Finishes Eighth in Team Roping at College National Finals Rodeo

CASPER, WYO. — The duo of Trey Southern (Las Cruces, N.M./NMJC) and Tyler Rees (Odessa College) finished eighth in the average of the team roping at the College National Finals Rodeo, held at the Casper Events Center. The pair wrapped up competition, with a seventh-place performance in the short round.

Southern and Rees posted an average of 51.0, and registered a score of 7.3 in the short round. – Adam Pitterman

Wolfe and Reid Named Lone Star Conference Scholar Athletes

PORTALES, N.M. — Seniors Mitch Wolfe (1B/DH, Litchfield Park, Ariz./Agua Fira HS) and Nicole Reid (Pueblo, Colo./East HS) have been selected as Lone Star Conference Scholar Athletes, for their outstanding contributions on the field and in the classroom at Eastern New Mexico University. To be eligible for consideration for this award, the student athlete must have participated a minimum of two years in a sport sponsored by a member institution.

Wolfe, a history major with a minor in health and physical education, is a two-time Capital One Academic All-District selection for the Greyhound baseball team. He also is a three-time Academic All-LSC selection. Wolfe is in the ENMU career top-ten for at bats, hits, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, total bases, fielding percentage, and defensive chances. His 896 career putouts and 79 double plays turned ranks second in Greyhound history in both categories. As a senior, he earned Honorable Mention All-LSC status, after posting a .308 batting average with 26 RBIs.

Reid, a criminal justice and psychology major, has garnered numerous awards of the years, including Greatest Zia. She earned United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honors, following the 2009 and 2010 cross country seasons. Reid is a two-time All-LSC performer in cross country and earned USTFCCCA honors after leading the Zias to their first-ever top 10 finish in the region, in 2011. She also was selected LSC All-Academic, following the 2010 and 2011 track & field seasons. She holds the track & field team’s record for the 5,000-meter run and five of the top 5k times in Zia cross country history. – Adam Pitterman

CASPER, WYO. —Junior Trey Southern (Las Cruces, N.M./NMJC) turned in a strong performance in the second go of the team roping, placing tenth, with Chase Johnson from Western Texas College in the College National Finals Rodeo, held at the Casper Events Center, in Casper, Wyo. Clinton Hiett (Sr., El Paso, Texas/Trans Mountain HS) placed 22nd with Tyler Rees from Odessa College.

With a score of 28.9 in the round, the duo of Southern and Johnson moved into 13th place in the overall standings, with an average score of 36.2 points. The duo of Hiett and Rees scored 7.5 points in the round and are currently in 19th place with 7.5 points.

Defensive Driving Course – In order to drive a University vehicle, an Enterprise vehicle, or a leased vehicle for the University, the State of New Mexico requires you to have completed the six-hour National Safety Council Defensive Driving Certification program. Great Monday/Friday Memo today!

It was cool to see that Ronny Cox is returning this summer. I still remember talking with him and writing a feature article for ENMU Magazine about him years ago. He was a great guy, very down-to-earth and appreciative of ENMU and Portales roots.

And thanks for including link to great article on our recent COMM grad Lawrence Baker, who loves his new job as a writer/reporter at Lake Powell. He's so happy there already. Great to see our former CHASE Editor In Chief doing so well already. –

June issue of ENMU-Roswell's Grapevine – [grapevine]

Ruidoso – The Bennett Trust announces its Benefit Gala, June 23-24, consisting of two evenings of performance art including the premiere of former ENMU student Robert Patrick's new comedy, "The War Over Jane Fonda," produced by former ENMU student Betty Bennett and starring Delana Clements, Jason D. Johnson, and Charles Benton (directed by Mary Maxson). Musical entertainment will be by local artists, and an eclectic selection of art from former ENMU student Betty Bennett's private collection, which will be displayed for the first time.

Intermission refreshments will be served. All performances will be held at the historic Old Mill at 641 Sudderth Dr., Ruidoso.

Tickets are $45 and can be purchased at the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Name: Stephan Age: 15 Grade: Starting 9th in the fall Stephan is an active young man who is making great progress both socially and academically. When not playing outside he likes learning new video games. Stephan  benefits from counseling, which may need to continue following placement. His caseworker prefers a two-parent family who can accommodate Stephan's medical needs relating to cystic fibrosis and who is willing to participate in a transitional treatment plan prior to placement. Stephan hopes to maintain contact with his siblings. Financial assistance may be available for adoption-related services.

Notice To Public from Constructors, Inc.
US 70/1st and 2nd Street Portales, NM Pavement Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Project

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) has begun pavement rehabilitation work on a 2.64 mile section of US 70 and 1st and 2nd Street between miler marker 421 to 423, approximately.

The scope of the project will include but is not limited to: Earthwork, mill and inlay, roadway reconstruction, ADA, curb and gutter, concrete drivepads, erosion control, lighting, signals, signing, striping, traffic control, landscaping, and misc. construction as needed.

Constructors, Inc. is the contractor for the project and will begin work in the vicinity of University Drive and work will proceed mainly east on US 70/2nd Street towards downtown Portales.

Work is scheduled to be completed late summer 2013. During that time, a single-lane closure will be in place on 1st and 2nd Street Monday - Friday. Motorists are asked to watch for construction personnel working in the area, observe temporary lane closures, and reduce speed while work is taking place.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communication (but not communication department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you win the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter in a word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.
