ENMU Hosting Quilted Wall Hangings – Golden Library at Eastern New Mexico University is hosting an art exhibit of quilted wall hangings through June 15.

The exhibit features approximately 50 works from area quilters, with some having won regional and national awards.

The exhibit is free and open to the public during library hours.  While school is out of session, Golden Library is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

Time for New Parking Decals – The new parking decals for faculty, staff, and students are available at the ENMU Police Department.  Your current decals are set to expire on Friday, June 1.  If you want to get a head start on the Fall 2012 semester you can stop by the ENMU Police Department and pick one up.  Decals are provided free of charge and you can register as many vehicles as you would like. 

The ENMU Police Department will start issuing citations on Monday Sept. 10 for "Failure to Register" and "Expired Registration".  Warning citations for these violations will begin on Monday, August 20th, 2012.  "Community Member" decals are also available at the ENMU Police Department.  If you have individuals who frequent facilities on campus and are not students, faculty or staff they can apply for a community member decal at the ENMU Police Department.  The decals are free of charge and will be valid for a period of one year until June 1st, 2013.  After that they will need to apply for a new decal. 

All students, faculty, and staff are required to register their vehicles to be in compliance with standing university policy and procedures.

Retreat at Pecos Monastery on June 12-14 – The ENMU Presbyterian Campus Ministry is sponsoring a retreat  on June 12-14 at Pecos Monastery (in Pecos, 25 miles east of Santa Fe) titled 'Redeeming the Routines: Finding Fullness of Life in our Everyday World.'

The retreat is being led by the renowned theologian and pastor Dr. Elmer Colyer, professor of theology at Dubuque Theological Seminary. So, take some time off from your busy schedules and routines this summer, and come spend a relaxing 2.5 days in the beauty and quiet of the San Juan Mountains in northern New Mexico, and spend some quality time in reflection and conversation with others about a topic that may change the way you lead your life.

Student Employment for summer

1.       All fall/spring SPAN's (workstudy or student hire) will terminate automatically on May 18. Students cannot work after May 18 without a summer SPAN.
2.       Summer begins May 19th through June 30th.
3.       All students must be enrolled in at least 3 hours to work during the summer semester.
4.       All student employees will need a summer SPAN.
5.       If the student was awarded workstudy for the fall 2011/spring 2012 aid year they will be classified as student employment, if not they will be student hire.
6.       Summer SPAN's will terminate automatically on June 30th.
7.       Student employees who wish to work after June 30th MUST have a 12/13 FAFSA on file and be enrolled for the fall 2012 semester. Remember they will use their fall 2012 workstudy if they have been awarded if not they will be student hire.
8.       Student employees are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session; 39 hours if working the interims. Interims are the weeks between semesters.
9.       Reminder:  A workstudy award is given based on the fall/spring semesters; which is 16 weeks per semester. If a student employee is using their 2012/2013 workstudy award beginning July 1st this will affect their award of 20 hours per week during fall 2012/spring 2013. This will begin counting down their award.
10.   Summer SPAN will be available the week of May 14th.
11.   Summer includes the first four week, second four week, and eight week sessions.

GRE, GMAT and LSAT Prep Courses Being Offered – ENMU’s Distance Education and Outreach office has partnered with The Center of Legal Studies to offer prep courses for the GRE, GMAT and LSAT.  All courses are offered six times a year and last seven weeks. 

The next available for all three is through June15.  The cost is $250 which covers the verbal and quantitative sections of the exams.

Year-End processing Deadlines – June 30 is the fiscal year-end.  The following are processing cut-off dates:

Purchasing Card:
The Business Office suggests that purchases end June 15 to ensure the charges will reflect on the June statement. Statements will be ready to review on Tuesday, June 26.  If you are traveling when the statements are due, please contact the Business Office.  Completed statements must be in the Business Office by noon on Wednesday, June 27.   Ruidoso statements will be due the morning of June 28.

Travel Vouchers:  June 29
All travel for 2011-2012 must be submitted to the Business Office by June 29, 2012.  Reimbursement for prior months travel should be submitted for payment before June 1.
 
Interfunds:  July 9
Interfunds for 2011-2012 must be received by the Business Office before July 9.  Interfunds received after the 9 will not be processed for payment.  Examples of on-campus charges include:  Sodexo, housing charges for camps, printing and duplicating charges, Physical Plant charges, etc.  

Corrections to Accounts:  July 16
Journal Vouchers and Budget Transfers are due in the Business Office by July 16.  Any expense transfers between budget lines are also due by July 16.

Request for Payment Form Revised – The "Request for Payment" form was revised by Accounts Payable in December 2011 to meet FERPA requirements.  Please use the form that is available on the Intranet and dispose of any prior forms you have.  Any version, other than the current form, will be returned back to the department for reprocessing effective Monday, March 5th.

Communication Services has a new Publication and Web Request Form.  For every project, big or small or for simple updates, please use the new form system which allows for tracking of the progress of each project by clients.

This form can be found on the ENMU website under the Faculty/Staff link, Branding and Identity: http://www.enmu.edu/faculty-staff/  or by going to www.enmu.edu/pubrequest.

To ensure the quality of your project, please allow a minimum of:

• 2-3 weeks for printed publications and
• 3-5 business days for normal Web update requests.

After submitting this form, you should receive an email confirmation with instructions on how to track the progress of your project. ENMU Hosting Choir Camp Through June 7

The Eastern New Mexico University Department of Music will hold its annual summer Choir Camp through June 7.

This camp will consist of over 100 high school students around the state participating in master classes, learning next year’s All-State audition music, and preparing music for a concert at the end of camp.  The students will be taught by ENMU faculty, as well as music teachers from around the state.

Besides singing and learning music, students will also get to participate in many recreational activities and perform in a talent show.

On Thursday, June 7, at 2 p.m., students will perform a concert that is free and open to the public.

Schmidt Joins ENMU Staff as NCAA Compliance Director

PORTALES, N.M.— Eastern New Mexico University Athletic Director Dr. Jeff Geiser has announced the hiring of Kristen Schmidt as the program’s new NCAA compliance director, effective June 1, 2012. She joins ENMU athletics after spending a year in public education, in Roswell and a number of years as a coach at Division II Concordia University.

Schmidt’s time at Concordia began as a student in 2002, where she went on to earn All-American status for the Golden Bear softball team. She went on to serve as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, assistant softball coach and athletic facilities assistant. Among her duties with the softball team, were recruiting and to execute offseason workouts within the guidelines of NCAA rules.

Wolfe Selected Capital One Academic All-American

PORTLALES, N.M. — Senior designated hitter Mitch Wolfe  (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Agua Fria HS) from the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team has been selected First Team Capital One Academic All-America, for his outstanding efforts on the field and in the classroom, during the 2012 season.  Wolfe is a two-time Capital One Academic All-District 6 selection, but this year marks his first selection as an Academic All-American.
 
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

The award caps a season, which saw Wolfe earn Lone Star Conference All-Academic honors for the third straight season, in addition to Honorable Mention All-LSC status. He batted .308 in his final season with 26 runs batted in, along with a team-best four homeruns.
 
Wolfe, a history major, concluded his career at Eastern, ranking fourth in career hits (197), doubles (44), runs batted in (127) and fifth in homeruns (17). For the season, he batted .308 with four homers, 16 doubles and 26 RBIs. Wolfe posted a 12-game hit streak during his final season and closed the year on an 11-game hit streak. Midway through the season, he notched a four-for-five outing against Abilene Christian, with two doubles and three runs scored. – Adam Pitterman

Padgett Adds Perez to Zia Midfield for 2012 Season

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University Women’s Soccer Coach Todd Padgett has announced the signing of Jacquelyn Perez (CM, 5’8, El Paso, Texas/Coronado HS/El Paso Storm) to a National Letter of Intent, to join the program for the 2012 season. Perez joins a talented recruiting class, to bolster the roster of a Zia squad, which finished a program-best third, in the Lone Star Conference, last season.

 “Jackie is a natural playmaker,” said Padgett.  “Her ability to strike the ball from distance, willingness to take people on, and excellent decision making in the final third will provide us with a different dynamic moving forward and in the offensive third.”

Perez is a technically gifted center midfielder with attacking attributes that will be a welcomed addition to a Zia team which struggled to find the net at times last season. Her overall ability and composure on the ball, will make her a very tough player to handle in the center of the field or in a one-on-one situation. Perez is dynamic, crafty, and not shy about hitting things from distance. Oscar Mendoza, coach of the El Paso Storm, says “I feel like Jackie Perez is the most skillful and among the most talented players that has come out of the El Paso area in the past 10 years.” Jackie is her team’s leading scorer and has been twice awarded all-district honors for Coronado High. She also represented the state of Chihuahua in the finals of the U-17 Mexican Nationals as well as being involved in New Mexico ODP.

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team turned in its best finish, in 2011, placing third in the Lone Star Conference standings. The performance lifted the Zias to their second-ever appearance in the LSC tournament. – Adam Pitterman

Draper Finishes 13th in Javelin at NCAA Championships

PUEBLO, COLO. — Senior DJ Draper (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty HS) turned in a 13th-place performance in the javelin throw on Saturday afternoon, at the NCAA Division II Championships, held at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl. His throw of 196’-9” was the best of his three appearances at the championship event.

Draper’s throw was more than a foot farther than 14th-place finisher, Tyler Rolshausen (Kutztown, 195’-2”). His previous top throw at the NCAA Championships went a distance of 190’, last season.

Ruidoso – The Bennett Trust announces its Benefit Gala, June 23-24, consisting of two evenings of performance art including the premiere of former ENMU student Robert Patrick's new comedy, "The War Over Jane Fonda," produced by former ENMU student Betty Bennett and starring Delana Clements, Jason D. Johnson, and Charles Benton (directed by Mary Maxson). Musical entertainment will be by local artists, and an eclectic selection of art from former ENMU student Betty Bennett's private collection, which will be displayed for the first time.

Intermission refreshments will be served. All performances will be held at the historic Old Mill at 641 Sudderth Dr., Ruidoso.

Tickets are $45 and can be purchased at the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce.

US 70/1st and 2nd Street Portales, NM Pavement Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Project

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) has begun pavement rehabilitation work on a 2.64 mile section of US 70 and 1st and 2nd Street between miler marker 421 to 423, approximately.

The scope of the project will include but is not limited to: Earthwork, mill and inlay, roadway reconstruction, ADA, curb and gutter, concrete drivepads, erosion control, lighting, signals, signing, striping, traffic control, landscaping, and misc. construction as needed.

Constructors, Inc. is the contractor for the project and will begin work in the vicinity of University Drive and work will proceed mainly east on US 70/2nd Street towards downtown Portales.

work is scheduled to be completed late summer 2013. During that time, a single-lane closure will be in place on 1st and 2nd Street Monday - Friday. Motorists are asked to watch for construction personnel working in the area, observe temporary lane closures, and reduce speed while work is taking place.

Notice of Street Improvement Project and Partial Closures on 18th Street

PORTALES, NM- A Street Improvement/Rehabilitation project is slated through June 12, in Portales on 18th Street from Avenue D to Avenue I. Portions of 18th Street between Avenue D and Avenue I will be closed to through traffic during the day over the next two weeks to allow the Street Department to mill, chip and seal as part of the street rehabilitation process. Travelers are encouraged to exercise caution and observe traffic control when traveling through the aforementioned project area.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communication (but not communication department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you win the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter in a word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.
