In a competition sponsored by New Mexico Press Women, Wendel Sloan, director of Media Relations and local columnist for the Clovis News-Journal and Portales News-Tribune, won first place in New Mexico in the category of "Opinion Columns." His columns will advance to the national competition at the National Federation of Press Women Convention in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Sept. 20-22.
Sloan won for two columns about how the birther issue about President Obama's citizenship should join Osama bin Laden on the ocean floor, and about alcoholism not being a moral failing as insinuated by a postcard sent out by a local church opposing Sunday alcohol sales at Portales restaurants.
Other winners in the category were: second, Merilee Dannemann, New Mexico News Services; third, Sherry Robinson, New Mexico News Services; honorable mention, Wally Gordon, The Independent.
Sloan's column appears on Sundays in the two papers.
