ENMU Receives 'A Partnership with Tomorrow' Grant

Eastern New Mexico University’s newest federally-funded  grant is a partnership with tomorrow—the children of  Bloomfield, Deming, Shiprock, Hagerman, Loving, and Zuni, New Mexico.  Through a $1.5 million grant from the Office of English Language Acquisition, ENMU will help teachers in these rural, under-served New Mexico districts to close the achievement gap of their English language learners. Over the five years of Project Maestros (Teachers), at least 100 teachers will add TESOL endorsement to their credentials, and hundreds of students will benefit from these new techniques and pedagogies in their classrooms.

Project director Trina Lujan, who will coordinate the project, is an adjunct faculty member with ENMU’s bilingual education program.  An experienced educator on the K-12 and university levels, Ms. Lujan has been a federal programs and bilingual program director, teacher, and principal, and has extensive experience with the fiscal management of grants and district budgets. Mrs. Lujan holds Master’s and Education Specialist degrees.

Two ENMU faculty will also work closely with the project. Dr. Romelia Hurtado de Vivas currently serves as graduate coordinator for Education and Ms. Geni Flores taught for twelve years in the rural school district of Lovington, NM, before joining the ENMU faculty to coordinate the TESOL Endorsement Program. Both have helped to guide hundreds of New Mexico teachers to their TESOL endorsement.  “Hundreds of teachers on the east side of New Mexico have completed this program and helped their students make that transition to English language fluency,” said Flores.  “ENMU is honored to reach out to districts who have asked for our help—and now we can bring this program to them.”

This project, which will extend ENMU’s reach to the northwest and western portions of the state, was strongly supported by dean of the college, Dr. Jerry Harmon.  “We are gratified that this grant allows us to serve six school districts who are working so hard to help students,” commented Harmon.  “This program  works well with Navajo or Spanish language speakers to assist English language acquisition.”  In Bloomfield (called Naabíání in Navajo).  Shiprock, and Zuni (or Shiwinna), New Mexico, many students’ home language is Navajo.  School administrators in all six districts supported of the University’s grant application.

The project will cover the cost of materials, tuition and fees for teachers in the targeted districts to complete 12 hours of course work leading to TESOL endorsement. Working with colleagues in their schools with online and on-site support from ENMU faculty, teachers in these districts will also have the opportunities of summer institutes to share their teaching experiences with colleagues in other schools and districts.

ENMU has been offering TESOL endorsement since 1999 in a program ENMU developed with Dr. Socorro Herrera of Kansas State University.  Dr. Herrera, a graduate of Eastern, designed the program with her professor at Eastern, Dr. Julia Rosa Emslie.  The program is a nationally recognized leader in the delivery of these pedagogies and techniques.

Manager's Evaluation Training on May 14, 15 and 18 – Human Resources will host mandatory Manager's Evaluation Training on Monday, May 14, at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 15, at 3:30 p.m. and Friday, May 18, at 2 p.m. in SAS 166. 

Since June 30, the end of the evaluation period, falls on a Saturday, the evaluations will be due to the Office of Human Resources no later than July 2. It is pertinent that all new managers/supervisors attend one training to learn how to effectively evaluate your employees. Those managers/supervisors who have done the evaluations previously but would like a refresher are also welcome.

Payroll Paperwork Deadline is Today – This is a friendly reminder that, Monday, May 14, is the payroll paperwork deadline.  This means that all PANs, SPANs, and Special Pay Slips must be received in the Human Resource Office by 5 p.m. in order to be processed for the May 25 payroll.

If your department has hired a new student, faculty, or staff employee, send them to the Human Resource office to sign up for payroll. If you are a new student, faculty, or staff employee, bring two forms of ID with you to the HR office, Admin 113, to complete the required payroll documents. All paperwork submitted after this date will be included in the following payroll.  There will be no exceptions for failure to meet this payroll deadline.

Bookstore Job Opening – The Bookstore has a job opening. This position is not restricted to students and requires a 20-30 hour workweek. Retail experience is preferred but not required. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service skills and have open availability between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The position requires no evening and very limited weekend hours.

Evaluation Sessions on June 12-13 – Human Resources will host an Employee's Evaluation Information Session on Tuesday, June 12 at 3 p.m. and Wednesday, June 13 at 10 a.m. in the Sandia Room in the Campus Union Building.  Evaluations are due on July 2, 2012 so it is pertinent that you attend the training and learn how you will be evaluated by your supervisor and what your role in this evaluation will be.  We are looking forward to seeing you there.

ENMU Secures $1.5M Grant to Support Teachers of English Language Learners in New Mexico

Eastern New Mexico University is the recipient of a $1.5M grant (over five years) to support teachers of English language learners in rural New Mexico. 

Partnering with schools in Bloomfield, Deming, Shiprock, Hagerman, Loving, and Zuni, ENMU will provide teachers of English learners with site-specific and school-based in-service training to enhance their students’ success. The competitive grant was awarded by the Office of English Language Acquisition, a division of the US Department of Education.

This project is part of an on-going program at ENMU providing professional development for teachers leading to alternative licensure in TESOL.  The program, designed in collaboration with Kansas State University in 1999, has allowed several hundred teachers in New Mexico to earn alternative licensure. 

The grant will pay tuition costs for participants and will provide summer institutes for participants, allowing them to share and evaluate best teaching practices.

Summer Employment for Students

Reminders for summer:

• Student employees are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session, unless approved by area administrator; 39 hours if working the interims. Interims are the weeks between semesters
• Students not enrolled in at least 6 hours will be subject to social security and Medicare.
• Students being paid the equivalent of student hire from a grant funded position will need to check with the grant supervisor or the area administrator for requirements pertaining to summer employment.

Spring 2012 (Ends May 18th 2012)

• All fall/spring SPAN’s (workstudy or student hire) will terminate automatically on May 18th. Students cannot work after May 18th without a summer SPAN.

Summer 2012 (May 19th – June 30th)

• Student’s MUST have an 11/12 and a  12/13 FAFSA on file, this will be displayed on the SPAN
• Summer will be May 19th through June 30th. 
• All student employees will need a summer SPAN.  SPANs will be available the week of May 14th.
• Summer SPAN’s will terminate automatically on June 30th.
• All students must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours to work during the summer term,
• This can be in either of the 4 week or the 8 week sessions.
• If the student is currently employed under a workstudy program for the spring 2012 semester they will be classified as “Summer Employment”. Their pay until June 30, 2012 will not be deducted from your department’s budget.
• If the student was hired as “Student Hire” during the fall 2011/spring 2012 they will continue to be “Student Hire” for the summer 2012 and their pay will continue to be deducted from the department’s student hire budget.

Fall 2012 (July 1, 2012)

• Student must be enrolled for the fall 2012 semester.
• Students awarded fall 2012/ spring 2013 workstudy will begin using their fall award July 1 2012.
• Reminder:  A workstudy award is given based on the fall/spring semesters; which is 16 weeks per semester. If a student employee is using their 2012/2013 workstudy award beginning July 1st this will affect their award of 20 hours per week during fall 2012/spring 2013. This will begin counting down their award. 
• If the student has not been awarded workstudy for fall 2012/spring 2013 they will be “Student Hire”

Retreat at Pecos Monastery on June 12-14 – The ENMU Presbyterian Campus Ministry is sponsoring a retreat  on June 12-14 at Pecos Monastery (in Pecos, 25 miles east of Santa Fe) titled 'Redeeming the Routines: Finding Fullness of Life in our Everyday World.'

The retreat is being led by the renowned theologian and pastor Dr. Elmer Colyer, professor of theology at Dubuque Theological Seminary. So, take some time off from your busy schedules and routines this summer, and come spend a relaxing 2.5 days in the beauty and quiet of the San Juan Mountains in northern New Mexico, and spend some quality time in reflection and conversation with others about a topic that may change the way you lead your life.

GRE, GMAT and LSAT Prep Courses Being Offered – ENMU’s Distance Education and Outreach office has partnered with The Center of Legal Studies to offer prep courses for the GRE, GMAT and LSAT.  All courses are offered six times a year and last seven weeks. 

The next available for all three is through June15.  The cost is $250 which covers the verbal and quantitative sections of the exams.

Year-End processing Deadlines – June 30 is the fiscal year-end.  The following are processing cut-off dates:

Purchasing Card:
The Business Office suggests that purchases end June 15th to ensure the charges will reflect on the June statement. Statements will be ready to review on Tuesday, June 26th.  If you are traveling when the statements are due, please contact the Business Office.  Completed statements must be in the Business Office by noon on Wednesday, June 27th.   Ruidoso statements will be due the morning of June 28.

Travel Vouchers:  June 29,
All travel for 2011-2012 must be submitted to the Business Office by June 29, 2012.  Reimbursement for prior months travel should be submitted for payment before June 1.
 
Interfunds:  July 9
Interfunds for 2011-2012 must be received by the Business Office before July 9.  Interfunds received after the 9th will not be processed for payment.  Examples of on-campus charges include:  Sodexo, housing charges for camps, printing and duplicating charges, Physical Plant charges, etc.  

Corrections to Accounts:  July 16
Journal Vouchers and Budget Transfers are due in the Business Office by July 16.  Any expense transfers between budget lines are also due by July 16.

Request for Payment Form Revised – The "Request for Payment" form was revised by Accounts Payable in December 2011 to meet FERPA requirements.  Please use the form that is available on the Intranet and dispose of any prior forms you have.  Any version, other than the current form, will be returned back to the department for reprocessing effective Monday, March 5th.

Communication Services has a new Publication and Web Request Form.  For every project, big or small or for simple updates, please use the new form system which allows for tracking of the progress of each project by clients.

To ensure the quality of your project, please allow a minimum of:

• 2-3 weeks for printed publications and
• 3-5 business days for normal Web update requests.

ENMU Grad Making Name in Music

Vancouver Summer opera Studio

Mezzo-Soprano Kate Mathews is a varied and active performer, at home with opera, concert, jazz, Broadway, and ensemble singing. Miss Mathews’ operatic credits include Cornelia in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Baba in The Medium, Mother Jeanne in Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors. She has also participated in many scenes from operas including Carmen, L’italiana in Algeri, Così fan tutte, and Der Rosenkavalier. Her musical theatre credits include Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Mary in Happy End, and Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun and Aunt March in Little Women.

In 2010, Miss Mathews attended the CoOPERAtive program at Westminster Choir College and the RESONANZ Albany Singer Intensive Festival in Albany, NY. In 2007, she spent a summer in England at the Abingdon Summer School for Solo Singers.

Miss Mathews is also a frequent performer on the concert stage. In collaboration with the chamber music department at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, she recently performed Ned Rorem’s Santa Fe Songs for low voice and piano quartet. Miss Mathews has also appeared as a soloist with the American Philharmonic-Sonoma County.

Miss Mathews recently placed second in both the Art Song and Aria divisions at the Bay Area National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) annual competition. She has been awarded grants from the Anna Sosenko Assist Fund and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Professional Development Fund.

Originally from Loveland, Colo., Miss Mathews holds a Master of Music Degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music Degree from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.

Samoei and Kipruto Earn All-Lone Star Conference Status in Track & Field

RICHARDSON, TEXAS. — After combining to win a pair of events and post three runner-up finishes at the Lone Star Conference Championship meet, last weekend, the duo of Isaiah Samoei (Jr., Eldoret, Kenya/Iowa Western CC) and Tallam Kipruto (Jr., Nairobi, Kenya / Oster HS /South Plains CC) have been named to the list of Men’s All-LSC Performers.

The list of all-conference performers includes the winner of each event at the conference meet, including all members of the winning relay teams, plus any athlete who scores at least 14 points at the meet. In all, 27 men and 25 women were recognized by the all-conference program

Samoei won both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs, with times of 14:51.95 and 31:21.10, respectively, in addition to finishing as the runner up in the 1,500-meter run, with a time of 3:54.36. His time in the 1,500-meter run set a Greyhound record, while his 28 points at the championships was just a single point behind the Nick Jones (Abilene Christian), who led the even with 29 points.

Kipruto was the runner-up in the 5,000-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase, with times of 15:10.11 and 9:24.66, respectively. He also garnered points, with a seventh-place finish in the 1,500-meter run, with a time of 3:58.63. – Adam Pitterman

"I wanted to express my sincere gratitude about a course I have just completed  (BUS 501) for the Spring 2012 Term, with Dr. Timothy Cunha. Dr. Cunha did a great job facilitating the course and ensuring that all students had sufficient time to complete the requirements of the class, provided adequate feedback, and was very prompt with any questions I had.

So far, this class has been the most beneficial for me and I have learned a lot (especially since I am a web-based student).

Credit unions throughout the state are participating in a search for a young adult “spokester” who will reach out to Gen Yers ages 18 to 25 via social media, special events and other activities to get them on track for a lifetime of financial well-being through the Young & Free New Mexico program. The spokester must be:
• Social media savvy
• Video natural
• Creative blogger
• Self-motivated
• A personality that pops! Dynamic, likeable and outgoing -- able to talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime

The spokester search starts Monday, April 30 and deadline for applicants is May 31 at 1:00 pm. Young & Free New Mexico is sponsored by 11 New Mexico credit unions. Currency Marketing of Canada developed the program and is working with New Mexico credit unions to find the next spokester. The spokester is expected to function as a sort of dynamic, creative and self-motivated roving ambassador, with the ability to engage Gen Y in the Young & Free New Mexico program using social media, special events, meet-ups and other “off-script” methods.
The person who is chosen will receive an Apple MacBook Pro and high-def video camera, which they keep at the end of the one-year contract, and a smart phone, as well as a salary and use of a vehicle for the year.
The spokester will be announced in June.

ENMU-Roswell Commencement (photos by Donna Oracion)

 

As one of the Roswell Public Library’s New Mexico Centennial events, nationally and internationally acclaimed syndicated columnist, author, and speaker Heloise will be appearing at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center on Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Roswell Public Library, the Roswell Daily Record, Xcel Energy, and the Chaves County Veterinary Medical Association, Heloise will speak on a topic that is dear to her heart:  “Literacy: Make It Fun!” 

The program is free and open to the public.  However, seating is limited, and no one will be admitted without a ticket.  Tickets may be picked up from April 24 through May 14th at two locations:  Roswell Public Library, 301 N. Pennsylvania Avenue or Books Again, 404 W. Second Street, during regular hours.  People who live outside of Chaves County may call the library, 575-622-7101, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, to reserve tickets that may be picked up at the Civic Center, starting at 6:00 p.m. on the day of the event. 

Following her presentation, Heloise will autograph books.  A limited number of her latest book will be available for purchase prior to that evening from the Roswell Public Library and Books Again. 

Prior to the event, the Friends of the Roswell Public Library and Pecos Flavors Winery will host a wine and cheese reception for an opportunity to meet and visit with Heloise from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Roswell Museum and Art Center.  Tickets for the reception are $20, which includes reserved seating for Heloise’s program, and can only be purchased at Books Again from April 21 through May 14.   

“Hints from Heloise,” which runs 7 days a week in over 500 newspapers throughout the United States and internationally, has been in syndication for 50 years.  It was first written when Heloise’s mother, Heloise Bowles Cruse, decided that she wanted to write a column in a newspaper to help housewives. When she marched to the office of the Honolulu Advertiser to discuss her idea with the editor, she even offered to work for free for 30 days.  The editor took a chance, and The Readers’ Exchange column began in 1959. It was such a success by 1961 that Time magazine did an article on Heloise.  Later in 1961, King Features Syndicate convinced Heloise to syndicate her column with a new title, Hints from Heloise.  When the original Heloise, “Every Housewife’s Friend,” died in 1977, her daughter took over the column and continues to write the column today.   

  Born in Waco, Texas, Heloise graduated from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, Texas, with a BS in Education and double majors in Business Administration and Mathematics.  She has written eleven books, is a Contributing Editor and monthly columnist for Good Housekeeping magazine, appears often on national television and radio, and gives numerous speeches to business and civic organizations.  Additionally, Heloise makes frequent appearances to support her charitable efforts for literacy, battered women’s shelters, the American Heart Association, military family support services, and animal-related causes.

Luis Available for Adoption

Luis M   Age: 16   Grade: 9 Luis is a young at heart teen who likes matchbox cars and video games, but does not like to be kept inside for too long! Luis is very much at home on the basketball court and football field.  He has many friends and is known to stand up for those in need. This being said, he can sometimes be seen more as a "lone ranger" type rather than a child who would seek adult support. Luis would require redirection and positive affirmation in this area to build this skill. He thrives on this type of personal time and attention. He is a well-mannered, polite child. He has a strong desire to be adopted and live with his forever family. Luis requires one on one attention and supervision. It is in his best interest to be the only child in the home.

US 70/1st and 2nd Street Portales, NM Pavement Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Project

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) begins pavement rehabilitation work Monday, May 14, 2012 on a 2.64 mile section of US 70 and 1st and 2nd Street between miler marker 421 to 423, approximately.

The scope of the project will include but is not limited to: Earthwork, mill and inlay, roadway reconstruction, ADA, curb and gutter, concrete drivepads, erosion control, lighting, signals, signing, striping, traffic control, landscaping, and misc. construction as needed.

Constructors, Inc. is the contractor for the project and will begin work in the vicinity of University Drive and work will proceed mainly east on US 70/2nd Street towards downtown Portales.

work is scheduled to be completed late summer 2013. During that time, a single-lane closure will be in place on 1st and 2nd Street Monday - Friday. Motorists are asked to watch for construction personnel working in the area, observe temporary lane closures, and reduce speed while work is taking place.

A local family lost their home to fire. Her place of employment is trying to gather items for the family. It was a total loss. The family was renting a house; and, unfortunately, they did not have renter's insurance. They have limited resources to start over. They are in need of anything and everything to put together a home starting with NOTHING. Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communication (but not communication department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you win the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter in a word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.
