Anthropology and Applied Archaeology graduate student David Plaza has been awarded a $713 grant from Digital Antiquity, a non-profit organization devoted to the preservation of and access to archaeological records and data. The grant is for research on creating a methodology for inputting legacy datasets into the Digital Archaeological Record (tDAR), a digital repository of archaeological data, as well as to help develop tDAR's procedures and tools for interfacing with site file data and formats. David presented a poster on this project, titled “A Model for Transferring Legacy Datasets to Living Documents”, at the Society for American Archivists’ 2012 annual meeting in San Diego.

For this research, he’s using site records of the Anasazi Origins Project (AOP), which was conducted by Cynthia Irwin-Williams and the ENMU Department of Anthropology in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The goal is to not only preserve the irreplaceable records, but also make them available for future research. David acknowledges the assistance of Dr. John Montgomery.

Anthropology Department Chair, as well as Dr. Rolando Marquez and Mr. Ricardo Arredondo of t he ENMU Graduate School Commons for their help in preparing the proposal for this grant. David presented a poster on a related project, titled “Preserving and Archiving the Anasazi Origins Project: A Case Study for Transferring a Legacy Dataset to a Living Document”, at the 85th Pecos Conference, held August 9-12 in Pecos, New Mexico.

Renovating ENMU Police Station –The office of the ENMU Police Department will be closed on Monday, Sept.17, and Tuesday, Sept.18, for renovations to the department.  This will not affect police or emergency response to the campus community.  Officers and staff will still be on site for assistance, filing of police reports and call response. 

Individuals with payments due on these dates will be given a reprieve through Wednesday, September 19, 2012 due to these circumstances.

Faculty Lecture on September 19 – The Department of Communication invites all students, faculty, and staff to attend the first lecture in its annual faculty lecture series. On Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 5:30-7 p.m., Dr. Roger Davis Gatchet will present his work titled “I've Got Some Antique in Me.'’ Authenticity and Oral History in Austin, Texas” in the Art and Anthropology Building, Room 110.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Playwright Robert Patrick Speaking at ENMU on September 24 – Former ENMU student and Los Angeles playwright Robert Patrick will speak to a freshmen theatre class at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 24, in the studio theatre. It is open to everyone.                                                

Scuba Diving On Tap – There will be a scuba diving class offered on the ENMU campus. The class will be held Sept. 28-30 and Oct. 13-14. Friday the 28th's class will start at 6 p.m. in the Science Building, Room 108 and will be all lecture and paperwork. Saturday and Sunday will be split between the classroom and the pool. Oct.13-14 will be spent doing the open water portion of the class in Santa Rosa.

The class costs about $425 and you earn a lifetime certification through PADI – the largest certifying agency in the world. You can reserve your spot by calling Judy at 562.2345.

Afghanistan Military Care Package Campaign

Do you have a parent or sibling serving in a military branch and stationed in Afghanistan? Eastern students and employees are reaching out to U.S. troops in Afghanistan with a "care package" campaign to let the troops know they haven't been forgotten. It is our sincere hope that our efforts will demonstrate how much we appreciate our military's efforts as well as honoring loved ones that are serving our country. This project started during the summer of 2008 and 39 of our military members have been honored with a package from ENMU.

To include your loved one in this care package campaign, please reply to this message with the information noted below or send the information to Academic Affairs, ENMU Station 2:

1.  Your name and relationship to the package recipient

2.  Full name, unit, and mailing address of the package recipient

3.  Photo of recipient, if possible

Photos will be posted on our "Honoring Those Who Serve" bulletin board which is located in the administration building, room 204. You may email your photo or drop it by AD 204.

If you do not have a parent or sibling serving in the military but would like to help with the project, you are welcome to donate items for the packages. The types of items needed are:

Batteries (especially AAA and AA), magazines and books, toiletries (shaving cream, disposable razors, lotion, body and foot powder, toothbrushes, and manicure items), individual packaged facial wipes, hard candy, gum, trail mix, cards or other games.

Items may be dropped off in Academic Affairs by AD 204.

Parking Regulations Now Being Enforced – The ENMU Police Department began enforcing university parking regulations related to "Failure to Register" and "Expired Decal" on Sept. 14. University policy and procedure requires all faculty, staff and students to register their vehicle(s) at the ENMU Police Department. 

Registration of all vehicles is free, however if you are cited for "Failure to Register" it may result in a $15 fine.  You can fill out an application online or at the department. 

Also, we would like the campus community to be aware that pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks on campus and the speed limit on campus is 20 miles per hour unless otherwise posted. 

Please stop for pedestrians at crosswalks.  Failure to do so may result in unnecessary traffic citations.  If you have any questions regarding this or any related matters please feel free to contact the ENMU Police Department at 562.2392.

Policy on Political Postings

Elections in November promise to be hotly contested. I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the University policy governing the display of campaign posters or placards on University property.

As an institution of higher learning we are a forum for free speech. However, campaign materials for any individual seeking public office may not be posted or displayed on University property, except in designated areas.
There are three designated areas: the large bulletin board at the south entrance of the Campus Union, the kiosk at the south entrance to Golden Library, and the southwest lounge in Golden Library.

Students may display any posters they wish in their own residence hall rooms. Faculty may display posters in their offices. However, doors and windows cannot be used for any posting.

The University publishes a map (http://www.enmu.edu/events/political-postings/) indicating the streets that are University property (no posting allowed) and other streets and areas near campus where posting is allowed with the property owners' permission (for example, in front of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, Baptist Student Union, or Wesley Foundation).

The University is very willing to welcome speakers (when sponsored by recognized campus groups) to debate campaign issues.

Scholarships Available for Spring Semester 2013 – The Kellie McGaarh Scholarship for education majors involved in their student teaching semester (spring 2013) and the Larry Razura Memorial Scholarship for English majors planning a teaching career, preferably graduates of Clovis High School, are available. Defensive Driving – In order to drive a University vehicle or an Enterprise vehicle for the University, the State of New Mexico requires you to complete the six-hour National Safety Council Defensive Driving Certificate program. The six-hour Defensive Driving Course will be offered:

Time for New Parking Decals – The new parking decals for faculty, staff and students are available at the ENMU Police Department. Your current decals expired on Friday, June 1. If you want to get a head start on the fall 2012 semester you can stop by the police department and pick one up. Decals are provided free of charge and you can register as many vehicles as you would like. 

The ENMU Police Department will start issuing citations on Monday, Sept. 10 for "Failure to Register" and "Expired Registration."  Warning citations for these violations began on Aug. 20.  "Community Member" decals are also available at the police department. If you have individuals who frequent facilities on campus and are not students, faculty or staff they can apply for a community member decal at the police department. The decals are free of charge and will be valid for a period of one year until June 1, 2013.  After that they will need to apply for a new decal. 

All students, faculty and staff are required to register their vehicles to be in compliance with standing University policy and procedures.

To ensure the quality of your project, please allow a minimum of:

Band Performs in Cowboys Stadium – Watch the ENMU Band perform The Star Spangled Banner before Saturday's football game in Cowboys Stadium. – [performance]

'Filling the Void' in Runnels Gallery Through September 28 (copy and photos by Jim Dodson)

"Filling the Void," an exhbiit by Ryder Richards, is on display in the Runnels Gallery through Sept. 28. Ryder said that he wants the viewer to "rethink that which you think you know." He built the display specifically for this show. "Our perception of pure and sanitized against that which is tainted or unknown, possibly feared," he descri bes his work. Using the UFO incident in Roswell (loosely) as a vehicle to progress the installation, he shows copies of government documents with text sections blacked out. The idea is about withholding information, though the information is there but just not seen. Students will come in from time to time and add more graphite to the white boxes, so the display becomes more dark, he explains. It will continually be evolving. Also, a computer survey that anyone can take, directs how much graphite is added, because the only two answers available to the questions are, “black or white.” And, of course, "the spinning crumpled piece of paper that is floating in space – only visible through tiny openings in the frosted sheets of plastic, adds to the mystery and the not knowing." More photos will be taken as the installation progresses; as more graphite is added, the white boxes get darker. Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15) is the period when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and celebrate Hispanic Cultural.  Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 31-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

Pedro Navarro has travelled through five continents, seducing an international public by his captivating music. Hounds Victorious Over Cardinals in LSC Football Festival Debut

ARLINGTON, TEXAS— What started at Cowboys Stadium with a game-opening kick return by Incarnate Word (1-2; LSC 0-1) ended with Jayson Serda's (Albuquerque, N.M./Manzano HS) 81-yard interception return and a thrilling 34-24 win by the Eastern New Mexico University football team (2-1; LSC 1-0), Friday afternoon in Arlington, Texas.

With the win, the Greyhounds improved to 2-1 all time against the Cardinals. Eastern last defeated UIW, in 2009, when quarterback Wesley Wood directed a drive of more than 90 yards.

After giving up an 83-yard kickoff to open play, the Greyhounds took over in the half, scoring on a 54-yard reception to Jacob Johnson (Jr., WR, Idalou, Texas/Idalou HS) and a one-yard plunge from senior quarterback Wesley Wood (Muleshoe, Texas/Muleshoe HS). Wood scored his second touchdown of the day on a three-yard run with 10:10 left in the opening half, to give ENMU its first lead of the game, 21-14.

The teams traded scores to open the second half, with the Cardinals kicking a 25-yard field goal to seize a 24-21 edge, with 10:06 left in the fourth quarter. De'Coreyon Thomas   (Jr., RB, Dickinson, Texas/Dickinson HS) capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown sprint off the left side, to stake ENMU to a 28-24 edge, with 5:56 to play. UIW drove to the Greyhound 21-yard line, but Zach Rhodes third-down pass was intercepted by Serda, who raced down the left sideline, for the game-sealing score.

The Hounds rushed for 244 yards and were led by Thomas' career-best 115-yard performance. Wood rushed for 90 yards. Linvel Mosby (Sr., LB, Odessa, Texas/Odessa Permian HS) paced the defense with 10 tackles, including five solo stops and one for a loss.

The Eastern New Mexico University football team will return to action, next Saturday, when it visits Tarleton State, for another LSC contest. Kickoff in Stephenville, Texas, is scheduled for 6 p.m. MDT. – Adam Pitterman

Zias Victoria-ous in 1-0 Win Over Lions

PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team (2-5; LSC 1-2) found themselves victorious as sophomore Victoria Perez (D, Rio Rancho, N.M. / Rio Rancho High School) headed in the game winning goal in Lone Star Conference play against Texas A&M University-Commerce (2-3; LSC 1-1), Sunday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field. With the 1-0 victory, the Zias picked up their first LSC victory of the season and have now claimed the last two matches over the Lions.

With both teams fighting for possession in the first half, the Zias came out on top of the fight for the first score. After having two good looks on goal, the Zias connected off of a free kick opportunity. In the 36th minute of play, Olivia Armstrong (So., D, Albuquerque, N.M. / Sandia High School) and Carolyn Armijo (Fr., M, Mesilla Park, N.M. / Las Cruces High School) teamed up to service a ball from an indirect free kick. After Armstrong played the ball, Armijo serviced a beauty into the box which allowed Perez to head her first goal of the season into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. With the lead the Zias were able to fend off all of the Lions scoring opportunities and take the lead into half.

Coming out of the half A&M- Commerce kept the pressure on the Zias but Eastern’s defense did not falter. One goal proved to be enough for the ENMU squad as they were able to hold onto the lead and take their first LSC victory 1-0. Freshman keeper, Xan Ortiz (Rio Rancho, N.M. / V. Sue Cleveland High School) looked like a veteran today as she picked up seven total saves and her second shutout of the season.

Women’s soccer will head back on the road as they are set to take on Abilene Christian University on September 21st. The match is set to begin at 4 PM MST. – Rachel Johnson

Pair of Crosby Goals Lead Hounds to Shutout Win at Dallas Baptist

DALLAS, TEXAS — Sophomore forward Abayneh Crosby (Houston, Texas/Atascocita HS) scored 11:19 into Saturday afternoon’s contest against Dallas Baptist and the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (5-2) never looked back, en-route to a 4-0 victory, at Patriot Field. The goal was his second game-winning score of the season and the fourth of his career.

The win improved Eastern to 2-0 all-time against Dallas Baptist. The only other meeting between the teams came on August 28, 2004 and was the second contest in the history of the Greyhound program. The Hounds won that game 3-1, with Joseph Alvarez tallying the game-winning goal 17 minutes into the second half.

Michael Stewart’s (Sr., D, Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch HS) header late in the first half, off a pass from Carlos Viveros (So., M, Houston, Texas/Morton Ranch HS), went inside the far post of the Patriot net. Early in the second half, the Hounds exploded offensively, to double their advantage. Cantu Palombo (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS/Otero JUCO) tallied his third goal of the season at the 17:02 mark of the second half and Crosby scored again, just 24 seconds later.

Eastern enjoyed a 17-12 edge in overall shots and a decisive 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Hounds also held a 6-3 lead on corner kicks. Fredrik Widfeldt (Fr., GK, Yterby, Sweden / Katrinelundsgymnasiet) made five saves to earn his fourth win and the second shutout win of his career. Crosby tied for fourth on the ENMU single-game list, with five points, on two goals and one assist. Eric Beltran made seven saves for the Patriots.

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will return to action on Monday, when they visit Southern Nazarene, in Bethany, Okla. The game is set for a 12 p.m. MDT start. – Adam Pitterman

ENMU-ROSWELL STUDENT RECEIVES WELDING SCHOLARSHIP

            ENMU-Roswell student, Greg Johns, is the recipient of a $500 section scholarship from the American Welding Society (AWS) Foundation. Johns will use $250 for this fall semester and $250 for the upcoming spring semester.

            Originally from California, Johns, 27, enrolled at ENMU-Roswell in January of this year and plans to complete an Associate of Applied Science degree in Welding Technology. Dusty Baker, welding instructor, encouraged Johns to complete the scholarship application. Johns said his uncle and father were both welders, so he was introduced to the field when he was young. He said he enjoys welding and plans to either be a shop welder or own a welding business. He worked as a student hire in the welding department on campus this past summer and is currently employed at Leprino Foods as a fork lift driver.

            The AWS Foundation was established by the American Welding Society in 1989, to support programs that ensure the growth and development of the welding industry through strengthening research and educational opportunities in welding and related industries.
 

ENMU-ROSWELL CLUBS TO SPONSOR HUGE FLEA MARKET –The ENMU-Roswell Sierra Vista Resident Council and the Electronics Club will sponsor a Flea Market on Saturday, September 29 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Sierra Vista Village (residence halls) courtyard on campus. Approximately 35 tables will be available.

The ENMU-Roswell Foundation’s Tenth Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 6 at NMMI Golf Course. Tee times are 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The cost for the four-person team scramble tournament is $75 per player. Teams should have a minimum total handicap of 40. The fee includes breakfast (for morning players), lunch, golf towels, and other items for each player, and awards for the top teams, the longest drive, and closest to the pin. Additional prize drawings will also be held with donated items from a number of local businesses. 

Proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit the Foundation’s General Excellence Fund. Event ($2500), Corporate ($600), and Hole ($150) sponsorships are also available. Team entry and sponsorship forms are posted on the ENMU-Roswell web site, (www.roswell.enmu.edu) by clicking on the golf tournament slide from the home page.

ENMU-Ruidoso Hosting Play by Former ENMU Student

On Sept. 21-22 at 7 p.m. "You're Family,” written by former ENMU student Robert Patrick and directed by Mary Maxson, will premiere at the Old Dowlin Mill at 641 Sudderth Drive in Ruidoso as part of the Bennett Trust Benefit Gala for ENMU-Ruidoso.

Originally scheduled for June 22-23, the event was postponed due to the Little Bear fire, but organizers are excited about bringing the comedy and benefit celebration to the community on its new date. A showing of Betty Bennett's private art collection and entertainment by local musicians will also be featured. All proceeds will go to the Bennett Trust ENMU-Ruidoso Scholarship Fund.                  

Robert Patrick is a playwright and ghostwriter currently living in Los Angeles. He met Betty Bennett, a Ruidoso doyenne of theater and the arts in the late 1950's when they attended ENMU in Portales. Their friendship was renewed after many years, and Ms. Bennett is spearheading this premiere.

Mr. Patrick writes about the 1960's, its ideals and its failures from a personal, self-deprecating and humorous point of view. "You're Family" explores a family's complex personal and historical relationships against the backdrops of Vietnam, Desert Storm and small town America. The message of the need to heal the past through compassion and respect for one another and our differences is as applicable today as in any other time. The play is intended for mature audiences and contains adult language and situations.

The play will be performed at the Old Dowlin Mill, a Lincoln County landmark that is being preserved and converted into a community space. This will be its inaugural theater performance.

Name: Domonica Age: 15 Grade: 10 Family outings make this teen happy so she's always ready to pack up her bag!  Domonica plays the guitar and swimming is one of her favorite activities. Movies are also high on her list. Although it may take her a little time to warm up, once she gains trust, she is extremely loyal and giving. She likes to please others. In the tenth grade, Domonica benefits from an IEP (Individualized Education Plan), as well as counseling, which will need to continue after placement. This young woman would  really like to be adopted. Her caseworker prefers a two-parent or single-mother family willing to participate in a transitional plan prior to placement; however, all family types will be considered.  Financial assistance may be available for adoption-related services. Both homestudied and non-homestudied New Mexico families are encouraged to inquire about adopting Domonica.

Roosevelt County Crime Stoppers is looking for a couple of ENMU leaders to become involved in their organization. Scott Davis, president of this group, said that there was a desperate need for more involvement from the hospital and ENMU as major stakeholders in our community.

This group meets at noon on the first Monday of each month at Mark’s Eastern Grill. BYOL (buy your own lunch) and the meetings are done by 1 p.m. Would any of you be willing to volunteer to serve or perhaps at least attend a meeting to learn more about this group? I have three individuals from RGH that will attend the next meeting on Sept. 3. Scott said a representative from each law enforcement agency is also invited each month – however they cannot be a member.

Community Services Center’s Food Pantry – The Community Services Center has a Food Pantry available.  Each household can receive two bags of canned food from the food pantry, regardless of income, twice per year.  In order to receive food from the food pantry, individuals need to bring in a valid, current picture id (issued by the DMV), and a bill that has been mailed to their address with their name on it.  No photocopies will be accepted.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communication (but not communication department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you win the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter in a word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.
