She earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and sociology from Lock Haven University, a master’s in clinical psychology from West Chester University and Ph.D. in applied developmental psychology from University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
Dr. Shuttlesworth said she got interested in teaching while trying to get her masters because it required her to teach a class.
She said, “It’s exciting to impart knowledge.”
The La Porte, Ind., native has worked as a family therapist for children between the ages of 6-18 and helps them cope with transition from living in residential treatment facilities back to their homes.
During her spare time she likes cooking, baking, long distance running, shopping and socializing.
One day she would like to have a family of her own and, after she retires, work at or own a bakery.
She enjoys baking cookies and muffins, but has had to adjust her baking for the high altitude.
Dr. Shuttlesworth has been living in Portales for less than a month.
“So far, so good, everyone seems polite and the faculty are very helpful,” she said.
Dr. Shuttlesworth enjoys how friendly everyone is, the amount of living space in her new house, and never has to worry about finding a parking space.
Dr. Shuttlesworth said that she is motivated by “having goals and working toward them.”
