Dr. Sue Stockly, College of Business contributed two articles in the recently published Encyclopedia of Race and Racism, 2nd edition, Gale Cengage. The first, "Pathology, Dysfunction and Identify" was co-authored with Ejindu (EJ) Ume. EJ earned a BBA from ENMU and is now working on a Ph.D. in economics at the University of Alabama. The second article is "Structural Economics."

Update on Early Alert – Thank you to all who continue to send names using ENMU "EARLY ALERT" to the Advising Center for follow-up.  If you still have some students whose attendance is spotty or who may be experiencing other problems, please take a few moments to complete an early alert form for those students.

The notice tells the student to contact the instructor immediately. When possible, we also call the student. If a student still is absent, or has other issues, please feel free to submit another alert.

Daniels Fund announces Boundless Opportunity Scholarships for non-traditional students in New Mexico

Non-traditional students in New Mexico at risk of not being able to afford a college education will benefit from $76,000 in Boundless Opportunity Scholarships announced today by the Daniels Fund.

Colleges and universities in New Mexico receiving Boundless Opportunity Scholarship awards include: Central New Mexico University; Eastern New Mexico University; and the University of New Mexico, Taos campus.

Funding is awarded in two-year cycles, so Boundless Opportunity Scholarships are available at other colleges and universities that received awards last year. A complete list of schools offering the scholarship can be found on the Daniels Fund website, www.DanielsFund.org.

“Students who dream of bettering their lives with a college education are often least able to afford one,” explained Linda Childears, president and CEO of the Daniels Fund.  “Boundless Opportunity Scholarships are intended to give a boost to non-traditional students seeking the economic and social benefits of a college education.”

The Boundless Opportunity Scholarship is available at select two- and four-year colleges and universities and is intended for highly-motivated students seeking the next level of achievement in their lives, regardless of their life path.

Candidates for the scholarship must demonstrate financial need, and each college or university may focus on particular populations from a list of categories established for the program. The categories include: adult learners; GED recipients; foster care youth; juvenile justice youth; returning military; and individuals pursuing EMT/paramedic training.

Since 2004, the Daniels Fund has provided more than $1.2 million in Boundless Opportunity Scholarships (formerly known as Daniels Opportunity Scholarships) to more than 800 non-traditional students in New Mexico.

The program received its name through a quote from Bill Daniels, founder of the Daniels Fund who once lived in Hobbs and attended the New Mexico Military Institute, who stated, “America remains the greatest nation on earth, where boundless opportunities still exist for each and every one of us.”

Student Employee of the Year Nominations Sought by March 22

The office of Student Financial Aid seeks nominations for the 2012-2013 Eastern New Mexico University Student Employee of the Year. A review committee will evaluate the nominations.

We are asking each department to nominate at least one student employee for outstanding service. The award will be based on the student's reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, and uniqueness of contribution.

Multiple nominations and supporting documents are welcomed. Please be very detailed in your description.

The student must meet the following criteria:
* Undergraduate student employed on campus
* Student must have been employed for a min. of six months part-time during July 1, 2012 - May 17, 2013.
* Student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5

We will select three outstanding students to receive $100 each. In addition, all eligible nominated students will be recognized at the Student Affairs Banquet on the tentative dates of April 17..

ENMU Hosting Computer Programming Contest on March 30

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Eastern New Mexico University is hosting the 2013 Computer Programming Contest from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 30, in Room 107 of the University Computer Center on the Portales campus.

The Division I Contest is open to high school and college students who have completed no more than two semesters of programming classes at ENMU.

The Division II Contest is open to all other ENMU students.

The programming environment will include Python or Java running on Students Learning System (Linux server) or on windows using NetBeans or IDLE.

Contestants may bring laptops and books, but cannot use pre-prepared programs, and cannot access the Internet.

Rules will be emailed to all pre-registered contestants in March.  Prizes and certificates will be awarded.

Endowed Scholarships and Departmental Awards Ceremony on April 23 

On Tuesday, April 23, classes will be dismissed from 3-5 p.m. so that students and faculty may attend the Student Research Conference and the Spring Endowed Scholarship and Department Awards Program.  Early afternoon and evening classes will meet as usual.

  The Scholarships and Department Awards program will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom.  Endowed scholarships and department honors will be presented. 

5K Fun Run on April 20 – Psyched In!, along with the help of Psi Chi and VOICES, are hosting a 5k Fun Rn on April 20 to raise funds for the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home.  The entry fee is $20 for nonstudents, $15 for students, and $7 for children 13 and under.

 Entry fee includes a T-shirt and goodybag if registered by April 1st. Registration forms can be picked up in the COB 161.  

The race will start at ENMU’s Administration Building and will loop around campus.

Business Affairs Year End Processing Deadlines

June 30 is the fiscal year-end.  The following are processing cut-off dates;

Purchase Orders:  May 1, 2013
Last date for purchase order requisitions to be received in the Business Office.  All merchandise must be received by June 28, 2013 or it will be charged to the new fiscal year.

Purchasing Card:
The Business Office suggests that purchases end June 17, 2013 to ensure the charges will reflect on the June statement. Statements will be ready to review on Wednesday, June 26.  If you are traveling when the statements are due, please contact the Business Office.  Completed statements must be in the Business Office by Thursday, June 27.   Ruidoso statements will be due on June 28.

Travel Vouchers:  June 28, 2013
All travel for 2012-2013 must be submitted to the Business Office by June 28, 2013.  Reimbursement for prior months travel should be submitted for payment before June 1.  If you are traveling on June 29 or June 30 please contact the Business Office.

Interfunds:  July 8, 2013
Interfunds for 2012-2013 must be received by the Business Office by July 8.  Interfunds received after July 8 will not be processed for payment.  Examples of on-campus charges include:  Sodexo, housing charges for camps, printing and duplicating charges, Physical Plant charges, etc.

Nominations Accepted for Spirit of Eastern Awards – Nominations are now being accepted for the 2013 President's Spirit of Eastern Award.  Three support employees and three professional employees will be selected.  Nominations are limited to Portales campus employees and should be based upon the nominee's contributions or commitment to:

ENMU's teaching-learning mission, campus community spirit (humane, tolerant, responsive, concern with security and safety), hard work, care about the institution, whole student life commitment, and demonstrated track record in position (that is, nominees must have at least five years of employment with ENMU).

 The Spirit of Eastern Awards Ceremony will be held April 17 in the University Theatre Center.  Award recipients will receive a plaque, a pin and a $500 check. 

Years of Service awards will also be presented.

 37th Annual Jack Williamson Lectureship Approaches
Guest of Honor: Joe Haldeman
April 11-12, 2013  --  Thursday- Friday

The 37th Annual Jack Williamson Lectureship on April 11-12, 2013 welcomes science fiction author, poet, and MIT visiting professor Joe Haldeman as the guest of honor. The two-day event opens with a fiction/poetry reading by Haldeman at 6 p.m., Thursday (Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building, Room 112).  Friday morning features readings by visiting writers from 9:30-11:30 a.m.  in the Sandia Room of the Campus Union. 

Luncheon ($10, reservations required), beginning at 11:45 am in the Campus Union Ballroom, will feature mistress of ceremonies SF author Connie Willis and an address by Haldeman. Books will be available for purchase and autographing by writers in attendance. Everyone is welcome to attend the panels at Special Collections in Golden Library from 3 - 6 p.m. where writers, guests, and audience will discuss and debate topics in science fiction and fantasy. 

Guest of Honor Joe Haldeman is a decorated author, having won the Huho and Nebula awards for his novels The Forever War,(1974), The Hemingway Hoax (1991) and Forever Peace (1997).. Many of Haldeman's works, including The Forever War, were inspired by his experience serving in the Vietnam War, where he was wounded in combat.  Recent novels include Camouflage (2005), Old Twentieth (2006), The Accidental Time Machine (2008), the trilogy Marsbound (2008), Starbound (2010), and Earthbound (2011).  A poet (Saul’s Death and Other Poems) as well as author, Haldeman was awarded the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award in 2010.

Please Update Web Pages – ENMU’s web presence continues to be our most important outreach to potential students and their parents.  When web pages have errors or are out of date, that outreach becomes less effective. 

This spring, we are asking all departments and programs to carefully review all their web pages and forms.  By April 1, send any corrections or changes to the ENMU webmaster using the electronic webpage change request or by printing out the pages and annotating needed corrections.  Corrections can be sent to Minh Tran at Station 6.

After April 1, if any webpages are reported or found to be out of date, the department will be notified and the page will be removed.

How to Download W-2 Forms – Attention all employees including student, part-time and temporary

Electronic Form W-2's will be available in January 2013 for tax year 2012.  If you would like to receive your ENMU Form W-2 electronically, please follow these steps to submit your consent for an electronic Form W-2.  If you consented to electronic Form W-2 last year, you do not need to do this again.

1.      Go to www.enmu.edu
2.      Go to Faculty and Staff tab
3.      Select "Inside ENMU"
4.      Select "Employee Information" under the Banner paw-print
5.      Login with User ID and PIN
6.      Click on Employee
7.      Click on Tax Forms
8.      Select Electronic W-2 Consent
9.      Click on box labeled "My Choice"
10.     Select Submit button once ( A confirmation number will not appear)

By consenting to receive your Form W-2 electronically, you agree to print your Form W-2 on-line.  You may be required to print and attach Form W-2's to Federal, State, and local income tax returns.  A paper Form W-2 will not be issued if you consent to receiving your Form W-2 electronically. Your consent will be valid for subsequent tax years unless you revoke the consent, your ENMU employment ends, or the service is discontinued for a future year. 

You may revoke your consent and receive a paper Form W-2 by un-checking the consent box or by submitting written notification to the Human Resource Office, Station 21.  The deadline for establishing or revoking consent for electronic receipt of the 2012 Form W-2 is Friday, January 18, 2013. Form W-2's of employees electing to receive paper copies will be distributed via U.S. Mail.

To ensure the correct information is reflected on the 2012 Form W-2's employees must notify the Office of Human Resources of any mailing address changes by Friday, Jan.18.

The electronic and paper 2012 Form W-2's will be distributed no later than Jan. 31. Paper copies of employee Form W-2's may be obtained after Jan. 31 by contacting the Office of Human Resources at 562-2115.

Social Security Tax Rate Changes – Recently, legislation was passed that will impact your paycheck in the form of the expiration of the "temporary social security tax holiday" with the Social Security tax rate increasing from 4.2 percent to 6.2 percent.

Eastern New Mexico University’s Department of Art will host It’s About Time: 12,000 Years of Art in New Mexico from March 22—April 19 in Runnels Gallery in Golden Library at Eastern New Mexico University on the Portales campus.

The viewing hours are from 8 a.m. to midnight on Mondays-Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and noon to midnight on Sundays. There will be a closing reception from 5-6:30 p.m. on April 19.

Both events are free and open to the public.

This exhibit is a traveling an overview of New Mexico art to 11 small museums throughout the state to celebrate the centennial of New Mexico statehood.  The exhibition presents New Mexico’s vibrant artistic heritage beginning 14,000 years ago and ending with contemporary images. These connections and influences have shaped the visual arts that define New Mexico.

The exhibit was curated by the New Mexico Museum of Artas part of the museum’s regional outreach program. The pieces of art use Native American, Hispanic and European American art to tell the cultural history of New Mexico.

The exhibit has been funded by the New Mexico Humanities Council and Newman’s Own Foundation, and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation.

Hispanic Honoring Banquet

This year's theme for the Hispanic Honoring Banquet is “Fabulous 50’s”. President Gamble will present students with a sash of their country of origin provided by Hispanic Affairs for their accomplishments.  Graduates, will wear the sash during Commencement. Reception starts at 6 p.m. followed by entertainment "Mariachi Tradicional." 

Any ENMU Hispanic full-time student can attend for free. Graduates will attend for free and bring two complimentary guests. Any other guests will be $15 per person. Must RSVP by Thursday, April 25, with payment (if needed) by contacting Hispanic Affairs Office.

Women History Month

By 1986, 14 states had already declared March as Women's History Month. This momentum and state-by-state action was used as the rational to lobby Congress to declare the entire month of March 1987 as National Women's History Month. In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women's History Month in perpetuity. A special Presidential Proclamation is issued every year which honors the extraordinary achievements of American women.

Dreams and Women, “A Fruitful Relationship”

  - Laia Obregon- Dans will be giving a Dreams Workshop that talk about the subject of dreams from the perspective of women throughout history and putting the accent in the relationship.
Laia is a puppeteer who taught “The Symbolic Language of Dreams” on many settings such as The University of Barcelona , Mental Health Institutes, and prisons. She has also studied and experienced Junguian Analysis which is a method of psychotherapy.

Grube Selected as LSC Field Athlete of the Week for Performance at Tarleton State

RICHARDSON, TEXAS — After earning five Lone Star Conference Athlete of the Week selections during the indoor season, the Eastern New Mexico University track & field teams continued their strong performances into the outdoor season. Laura Grube (Fr., Crow, Ore./Crow HS) has been chosen as the LSC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, for her performance at Tarleton State.
 
The last time an athlete from the ENMU women's outdoor track & field team earned weekly LSC honors, came on April 29, 2010, when Kassie Daugherty (Field) and Nicole Reid (Track) had been selected.
 
Grube won the javelin toss at Tarleton State, with a throw of 128'-11, more than a foot longer than the closest competition. She also placed fifth in the discus. 

Gregory Joins Greyhound Soccer Team for 2013 Season

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University Men's Soccer Coach Harold Munoz has announced the addition of Jordan Gregory (F, 6-1, 175, Houston, Texas/Friendswood HS), for the upcoming season.
 
Gregory from Friendswood High School and Space City Football Club is a powerful striker who possesses good technique, plays well with his back to goal, very comfortable in possession and scores goals. He grew up in Barrigada, Guam and represented Guam at various international levels.

Gregory has been a steady presence on the Guam National program for a stretch of seven years and has played in many international tournaments. One of his most notable influences has been coach Sang-Hoon Kim who was a full international with the Korean Republic national team. As a senior, Gregory led his high school team with 14 goals and three assists.

Blackmon Second Team All-District Selection

PORTALES, N.M. — Junior guard Rodney Blackmon (Los Angeles, Calif./West Los Angeles College) of the Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team has been named to the Daktronics Division II District VI Second Team. He was one of four players from the Lone Star Conference selected to either the first or second team.
 
Blackmon averaged 17.4 points per game while shooting 38.7 percent from the field including 37.0 percent on three-point attempts and made 77.8 percent of his free throws. He also dished out a team-high 5.0 assists, grabbed 3.5 rebounds and had 1.1 steals per game on the year as well.
 
In 13 games this season, Blackmon scored at least 20 points including a 26-point performance in the LSC Tournament Quarterfinals against Tarleton State.

PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico baseball team begins Lone Star Conference action on the road at Tarleton State this weekend. The four-game series starts on Friday at 2 p.m. MT at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex. Saturday will see the teams play a doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. MT and both games are scheduled to be seven innings. The rubber game begins at 12 p.m. MT on Sunday.
 
The Greyhounds are 11-6 and have lost five straight contests while the Texans have won five straight games and are 11-6-1.
 
Greyhound Notes
ENMU is batting .376 as a team, the highest in the conference. Junior second baseman Colton Sims (Reno, Nev./Lassen College) leads the team in batting average (.552) and home runs (4) and his 20 RBI are tied with senior catcher Peter Creamer (Boston, Mass./Santa Rosa CC) for tops on the team. Senior outfielder Luis Quinones (Las Cruces, N.M./Mayfield HS) is batting .471 on the season and has moved into a tied for sixth place on the program's career hit list with 191. He needs just six more hits to move into a tie for fourth. Senior outfielder Derek Crenshaw (Pinole Valley, Calif./Solano CC) and junior infielder Rafael Romo (Riverside, Calif./San Bernardino Valley College) are batting .458 and .450, respectively, while Creamer (.421) is hitting over .400 as well.
 
Juniors Brett Humphries (St. Louis, Mo./Culver-Stockton College), Kyle Kesmarki (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix College) andBen Monticello (Windsor, Calif./Santa Rosa CC) have won two games apiece. Kesmarki also has two saves and a staff-low 1.35 ERA in six appearances.
 
Series History
Tarleton State leads the series 53-33-1 and has won nine consecutive games. Earlier this month at the Whitten Inn Classic in Abilene, Texas, the Greyhounds fell 7-5 to the Texans. In the contest, Sims was 4-for-5 at the plate with a RBI and two runs scored. Junior catcher Jacob Rogers (Temecula, Calif./Riverside City College) and Romo both had three hits apiece as well.
 
About Tarleton State
Alvaro Moreno paces the squad with a .413 batting average with a home run and team-best 20 RBI. Colten Boothe (.333), Fola Lajide (.303) and Nico Moran (.397) are all hitting over .300 on the season. The Texans like to steal when they get on base and have 52 steals on 71 attempts. Evan Robinson has a team-high eight steals and swiping seven apiece has been Moran and Moreno.
 
On the mound, Matt Buckmaster is 3-1 with a 0.92 ERA, two complete games and a team-high 28 strikeouts. Miguel Ramirez has compiled a 2-0 record in four stars with an ERA of 1.54. Garret Kelly and Landon Thompson both have three saves each.
 
Sims Hitting Streak Halted
Sims had his 16 game hitting streak end at New Mexico Highlands on March 12 when he failed to record a hit in four plate appearances. His hitting streak was the ninth longest in Eastern history since 1999.
 
Reached Base Streak Lives On
While his hitting streak is over, Sims was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance against the Cowboys that extended his reached on base streak to 17 games. His streak is tied for the 21st longest in program history since the 1999 season.
 
Road Game at Southwest Cancelled
The March 5 road game at the University of the Southwest was cancelled because of weather related issues. This is the second time that the Greyhounds have had to postpone a game against the Mustangs. The first was the Feb. 26 home game when snow hit the area the day before.
 
Quinones Hitter of the Week
Quinones was named the Lone Star Conference's Diamond co-Hitter of the Week on February 26 after batting .588 with 10 hits, four RBI and two stolen bases versus Metro State. He is the third straight Greyhound to be selected for the honor.
 
Shutout of Chaps
In their first weekday game this season, ENMU shutout Lubbock Christian 3-0 at home as the Greyhounds held the Chaps hitless for thru the first 6.2 innings. For the contest, Eastern only allowed three hits. The victory was the first for the Greyhounds versus LCU since 2003.
 
Crenshaw Hitter of the Week
For the second consecutive week a Greyhound hitter was selected as the Lone Star Conference's Diamond Hitter of the Week on February 19 as Crenshaw garnered the honor for his performance at New Mexico Highlands. He batted .588 with 10 hits and 10 RBI as the Greyhounds won their first series against the Cowboys since 2000.
 
Crenshaw was also named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's Hitter of the Week in the South Central Region for his performance at the plate.
 
Unassisted Triple Play
In the third inning of the Feb. 15 game at New Mexico Highlands, Sims recorded an unassisted triple play, the first ever in Eastern history. The triple play is only the third in program history and the first since 2004.
 
Sims Hitter of the Week
On February 13, Sims was selected as one of the LSC's Diamond Hitters of the Week after he batted .889 with a home run, five RBI, five runs scored and four stolen bases in the series sweep of Adams State.
 
Undefeated Start
ENMU began the season 4-0 for only the third time in program history. The 2007 squad won their first seven games while the 2006 team started their campaign 6-0.
 
Scoring Output
With their two 19-run games, Eastern scored 19 runs or more in multiple games of a series for the first time since 1994. That Greyhound squad put up 22 and 19 runs at West Texas A&M in a doubleheader on April 9, 1994.
 
Shutout!
ENMU's shutout in the third game against Adams State was the program's first since they blanked Central Oklahoma at home on April 11, 2010.

The new Student Services Center at ENMU-Roswell is now fully operational and open to students. Located just south of the Campus Union Building at 56 University Blvd., the $4.8 million center was funded by a statewide general obligation bond approved by voters and existing local general obligation bond proceeds. A grand opening ceremony and public open house will be held on Tuesday, March 19, at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend, tour the new building, and visit with staff and students. Refreshments will be served.

The 11,514 square foot building centralizes student services functions, providing an improved and modernized location for the departments that offer direct services to students. Those areas include admissions, advising, career resources, concurrent enrollment, dual credit, financial aid, new student relations, records/registrar, student development, student support, switchboard/information specialist, veteran affairs, and the vice president for student affairs. 

The new center includes convenient student computer stations, comfortable sitting areas, and several service windows that can be opened or closed to accommodate low or high student traffic days.

Enrollment at ENMU-Ruidoso hit a record 1,120 students for spring.

This number represents a 1.5 % increase over spring 2012. The total number of hours fell 1.3% from 7,253 to 7,158. This number is significant since state funding is based on this figure. The disparity is due to more students going to college part-time: 894 students versus 226 full-time students. An increase in the number of dual-credit students in the high school also affected how the total number of hours was calculated.

This is the second semester under ENMU-Ruidoso’s new academic departmental structure. There are now five departments instead of eleven: Business and Information Systems, Career &Technical Education, History and Social Sciences, Language and Fine Arts, and Math and Sciences; each with a department chairperson.

This new structure is functioning as intended to create workload equity among the academic departments, improve communication, efficiency, flexibility and structure to accommodate additional growth, to more closely align academic departments with the college mission, capitalize on the strengths of current employees and improve efficiency within each department while allowing for individualized assessment of program performance.

Samantha enjoys coloring, Ipad games, listening to music, Cinderella, cooking, riding her bike, jumping and puzzles. She also enjoys art activities and wants to play soccer and basketball. Samantha participates in weekly therapy where she is learning to ask for what she needs and expressing herself in a positive way. Name: Makayla Age: 7 Story: Makayla is a smart, artistic, outgoing young girl. She is a hard worker and does well academically in school where she is in the 1st grade. She does need help with transitions in school and needs support to interact positively with peers. Makayla enjoys drawing, bead work and cooking. She also likes Justin Bieber and Princesses. Some of her favorite foods are spaghetti, tacos, Mac & cheese and hot dogs. Makayla attends weekly therapy where she is learning about boundaries and how to interact in a positive way. These girls would benefit from a two parent family with extensive training and understanding of the needs of children in foster care. Samantha and Makayla will do best in a home where they are the only children or the youngest children in the home.  The family must be able to provide structure and supervision and be willing to participate in an extended transition plan to get the girls into their forever home. Kitchen Creations, A cooking school for diabetics, is coming to Roosevelt County

How to plan healthy meals and prepare delicious dishes that manage carbohydrates without adding extra sugar, sodium and fat will be discussed by Connie Moyers, Extension Home Economist and Judy Cox RD.  Class participants will prepare and taste healthy recipes, and will receive both a participant workbook and recipe books.  Kitchen Creations is sponsored by the Roosevelt County office of the New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service and the New Mexico Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program. 

People with diabetes are given priority, their family members or caretakers may attend with the diabetic depending on class size.  Participants should plan on attending all the classes, which will be held every Monday, for 4 weeks beginning on April 8, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. through Monday, April 29 at ENMU.  For more information call Connie Moyers at 356-4417.  The classes are free, but spaces are limited, so call now to enroll.  You may also enroll online at http://rsvp.nmsu.edu/rsvp/cookingfordiabetes.  If you know others with diabetes, who might like to participate in Kitchen Creations, please invite them to call and mention your name when they reserve a seat.  You will both receive a free copy of the Walk Indoors! DVD by fitness expert Leslie Sansone, if the person attends class.  You will be contacted before the first class with a map to the location and confirmation of enrollment.

Diabetes is a serious and costly disease in New Mexico.  Approximately 130,000 New Mexicans have been diagnosed with diabetes.  These numbers don’t tell the whole story since approximately one half of all people with diabetes do not know they have the disease.  Diabetes poses a major public health problem, but much of the health and economic burden of the disease can be prevented with early diagnosis and proper care.  Kitchen Creations is aimed at helping New Mexico’s families lead more healthy and productive lives.

Friendly Tips About Monday Memo Style – For anyone who thinks that we arbitrarily change the way that they submit items to the Monday Memo, we are simply using (mostly) Associated Press style.

We do try to make items friendlier by using Dr. for professors (which the AP does not) and first names or Mr. or Ms. with last names for others on second reference – versus AP style of using last names without Dr., Mr., Ms. or Mrs.

We always capitalize and spell out days of the week: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We spell out March, April, May, June and July. We abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. (We do spell out all months in headlines.)

We write times as 6:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. – not as 6:30 am or 7:00pm.

We write dates as March 3, 2011, or Sept. 10, 2011, – not as Mar. 3rd, 2011 or September 10th 2011.

We do not capitalize majors: anthropology – not Anthropology (unless the word would normally be capitalized: English, Spanish).

We use professor of music – not Professor of Music.

We do not capitalize fall semester or spring semester.

We use "and" instead of "&" – spring and fall, not Spring & Fall.

We do capitalize formal names of departments or colleges – Counseling and Career Services, College of Business, Department of Communication (but not communication department).

We also go easy on exclamation points – if you win the lottery, it might be worth three !!!

We never capitalize every letter in a word – FIRST FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY NIGHT!!! (unless it's the correct spelling for a company, restaurant, etc. – ECEL, TGIF).

We are not trying to offend anyone by editing their copy – just following guidelines.
