A dodge ball tournament will be held in Greyhound Arena on April to raise money for the Playground of Hope project. The event is open to all participants 14 years and older. What is Playground of Hope? Andrea Elizondo,a Eastern alumni and current graduate-assistant for Zia soccer, said " Playground of Hope project was created to raise money for a playground for an orphanage (City of Refuge Ministries) in Ghana and their school (Faith Roots International Academy)." City of Refuge Ministries is an organization with a two-fold mission; to provide education to the community as well as to aid children who are abandoned and or trafficked for slavery. Last year, Elizonda went to Ghana on a two month mission to teach Physical Education and Health to the 150 students of the orphanage and community. "Working as a health teacher and P.E. coach Andrea realized the value a playground could bring to these children," said Elizondo. |
Why a playground? Elizondo said,"A playground for these children gives them another way to be physically active, and since not all children are coordinated enough to play sports it enables them to develop physically as well as socially." The playground will be $6000 and so far the project has has raised about $3,000 of the goal of $8,000, so Elizondo can return to Ghana in the summer. |

"Don't dodge this opportunity to play your favorite childhood game," said Elizondo. If you are interested in participating or donating, contact Andrea Elizondo at andrea.elizondo@enmu.edu
