| Just for Old Time's Sake... The Shoes of Graduation (photos by Wendel Sloan) |

Editor's Note: By popular demand, here is the third installment of "The Shoes of Graduation" for the 2013 spring commencement. However, the criteria to make the grade this time was much tougher. Shoes had to at least be two-tone, and fit relatively well. Thus, far fewer are featured. |

| Faculty Awards Presented at Graduation |
![]() |
During the 2013 spring commencement, President Gamble presented faculty awards to (L-R) Drs. Chris Taylor, Jason Paulk, Suzanne Swift and Mary Kallus. They received the awards for: Research/Scholarly/Creative Activity: Chris Taylor |
Mary Kallus - Advising Dr. Suzanne Swift - Service It would take far too long to list each individual service contribution she has made to this institution, so some recent highlights will suffice: Most of you recognize her as the institutional Mace-Bearer, an honor that accompanies her 2-years- and-running service as Faculty Senate President. During her terms, much has been accomplished, including policy, handbook and bylaw proposals and changes. Beyond that, she has served recently on many standing and ad hoc committees, including her strong leadership with the Student Research Conference, chairing of the Curriculum Committee, Handbook, and Program Review Committees. Perhaps most important, however, is her deep devotion to service to her department, where she has oversight of four disciplines, three of which are subject to external accreditation. That the department houses some of strongest, growing programs in the university is a testament to Dr. Swift’s skilled stewardship. Dr. Jason Paulk - Teaching Dr. Paulk's professional experience includes numerous performances, both as tenor soloist and conductor. Choral ensembles from ENMU have been heard and praised throughout the region in concert tours and collaborations with orchestras such as the Roswell Symphony, Symphony of the Southwest, the Santa Fe Symphony, and Caprock Pro Musica. In addition, Dr. Paulk has toured extensively with the ENMU ensembles, performing in Salzburg, Vienna, Prague, Bejing, and recently at Carnegie Hall. Dr. Paulk remains active as writer, lecturer and clinician throughout the country. Dr. Chris Taylor - Research |

| Kaylee Peterson |
Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: I hope to get a teaching job in the Portales area.
Q: How did you get interested in education?
A: My mom was a teacher all of her life who enjoyed working with kids and she inspired me to do the same.
Q: What challenges do you see as an elementary instructor?
A: Staying on the professional side instead of parental side, because of the hard situations some children have to face.
Q: What is one aspect you like about elementary education?
A: I enjoy all the stories the kids tell every day because of their wild imaginations.
Q: What are some of the activities you participated in at ENMU?
A: I served on the board of directors in student senate, was the executive director for Up ‘Til Dawn two years ago, and was an ASAB member.
Also, I was a student writer at the Monday Memo for Wendel Sloan and worked with Mrs. Birdsong.
For a course requirement, I had a lot of fun reading to the Baptist Children’s Home.
Q: What did you learn from these activities?
A: I became a stronger, outgoing person.
I am able to figure out situations on my own and say I have been a part of something bigger.

Q: What other goals do you plan to accomplish?
A: After taking a semester off, I want to go back to school to get my master’s in school counseling.
I want to have two different degrees because I want to have the ability to do something different in my profession.
Q: In your spare time, what do you do for fun?
A: I do not have a lot of free time, but when I do I enjoy reading, traveling and spending time with my family.
During the summer, I plan on going on a mission trip to Ukraine with my family.
My favorite author is Karen Kingsbury.
Q: What do you like about ENMU?
A: I have been at ENMU for all four years and enjoy the support of the teaching staff.
I enjoy the small-town feel of Eastern and like that students have the opportunity to have one-on-one time with professors.
Q: What professor did you admire?
A: Dr. Kathie Good, who is an education professor, because of her willingness to communicate and help out her students.
She cared about you as a student and about your lifestyle.
Q: Any final comments?
A: I would like to thank Eastern for giving me a great education and the opportunity to stay involved.

Q. How do you feel about graduating?
A. I didn’t think it (commencement) would come this fast. I am excited to go home because I am going to ride my horse and start a hobby.
Q. What do you want to do for a career?
A. I thought that I wanted to be a veterinarian and go to a vet school. When I started an internship, I found out that I am no longer sure.
At my high school (Loving High School), I took a nursing class that I enjoyed, so I am looking into a nursing degree.
Also, I want to work with children and get my master’s in education. My phlebotomy course triggered this interest because I got to work with people.”
Q. How did you get interested in animal and diary science?
A. I love animals and am intrigued by them.
I prefer to work with large animals, such as horses, rather than small animals because I was raised on a ranch and grew up around them.
Q. If you stay within the animal and dairy science field, what do you want to do?
A. I would like to do animal research with the USDA or work with the Bureau of Land Management.
Q. What are some of the activities you participated in at ENMU?
A. I am the president of the Pre-Vet Club, participated in the ranch horse team, and was a hound handler my sophomore year.
I was also awarded Outstanding Agricultural Student, and worked with the Animal Reproductive and Nutrition Lab.
I enjoyed getting the opportunity to work with animals, and didn’t even mind picking up cow poop.
Q. At the 39th Annual Student Research Conference, you presented a paper titled “Feeding Motivation Comparing Pelleted Versus Ground Feed in Poultry.” Who influenced your thoughts and opinions about agriculture?
A. I want to give props to Dr. Darron Smith for teaching me everything he knows in lab.
Also, I would like to thank Cynthia Varela for taking me on a bunch of road trips.
Q. What is one thing you are going to miss about college?
A. I’ll miss going to get coffee and donuts early in the morning after a hard night of studying.
Q. In your spare time, what do you do for fun?
A. I like to hang out with my gal-pals, take walks with my dog, Chevy Weston, and play intramural dodgeball,” said the NFL Broncos fan.
Q. What other goals would you like to accomplish?
A. I want to travel the world with the Peace Corps to look at the differences between their agricultural world and ours.
Q. What has ENMU done for you?
A. ENMU has opened my eyes to new things--such as artificial semen collecting and traveling to work with students at different colleges and vet schools.
It has provided me with great opportunities to help me decide what I want to do.
